The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves.

Combining Post-Harvest Fish Va...lue Chain and Social Change Interventions in Zambia and Malawi (CultiAF)

While fish resources are criti...cal to the livelihoods of 700 million people worldwide, they are not achieving their full potential in Africa. This project will examine interventions to reduce poverty and to improve food and nutrition security using post-harvest innovations in the fish value chain. Post-harvest handling in Zambia and Malawi In the Barotse Floodplain of Zambia and the Lake Chilwa Basin in Malawi, poor post-harvest fish handling is common. The result is substantial economic losses and the potential for reduced nutrients in the fish. There are other challenges. Social norms and power relations in the industry are inequitable. Women's and men's share of the economic benefits is both reduced and inequitable throughout the fish value chain. Improving conditions The project aims to improve the performance, governance, and equity of fish value chains in Malawi and Zambia. The research team's methodology will combine technical fish handling and processing practices with social innovations and gender transformative approaches. These approaches help communities understand and question the social norms that lead to inequalities between men and women. Researchers will conduct a baseline assessment of current losses in post-harvest fish biomass, economic value, and nutrient content along the local value chain. They will use participatory approaches to identify and pilot different fish handling and processing practices, including brining, solar drying, and smoking. Better practices, better lives The team will then integrate social change interventions and gender transformative approaches to address the problems in the fish value chains. These interventions, when widely adopted, are expected to yield the following benefits: -reduced fish and nutrient losses -sustained increases in economic benefits -improved equity in benefits sharing among men and women. They will also improve food and nutritional security levels. Project leadership The project is a partnership between Zambia's Department of Fisheries, the University of Zambia, and Chancellor College, University of Malawi and is funded through the Cultivate Africa's Future Fund (CultiAF), a joint program of the Australian International Food Security Research Centre of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and IDRC. CultiAF supports research to achieve long-term food security in Eastern and Southern Africa.

Improved Processing and Market...ing of Healthy Fish Products in Inland Fisheries in Malawi (CultiAF)
more
|
This project aims to improve t...he supply of quality fish products in Malawi by reducing post-harvest losses. Better livelihoods and nutrition Fish is an important source of nutrition in Malawi, and its fisheries sector a critical source of income and employment. Yet people are eating fewer fish. Fish supplies are low, which has resulted in declining per capita fish consumption. One of the underlying causes is how the fish are handled after they are harvested. Approximately 40% of fish harvested annually is lost during post-harvest activities. A solar solution This project aims to address the problem by testing and promoting solar tent dryers. These dryers have the potential to improve shelf life and product quality for small fish. Specifically, researchers will test drying methods for three small fish species: -Usipa (Engraulicypris sardella) -Utaka (Copadichromis spp.) -Ndunduma (Diplotaxodon spp.) The research team selected these fish for their high contribution to total annual catch, wide availability, and good nutritional profile. They will test different pre-drying methods: -no pre-drying treatment -parboiling -smoking -brining Solar dryer and business model testing Researchers will assess the solar dryers' economic performance. They will also develop and test a new business model that links private sector and women's cooperative-managed businesses to supermarkets and existing informal markets. The solar dryers are expected to use less firewood than existing fish processing methods. Researchers also anticipate the dryers will produce more hygienic fish products, resulting in -improved environmental performance -increased incomes for producers -improved nutritional outcomes for consumers Project leadership The project will be implemented by Chancellor College, University of Malawi in the Salima and Mangochi districts of Malawi and is funded through the Cultivate Africa's Future Fund (CultiAF), a joint program of the Australian International Food Security Research Centre of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and IDRC. CultiAF supports research to achieve long-term food security in Eastern and Southern Africa.

This project aims to improve a...ccess to clean water and sanitation for 80,000 women, men, girls and boys in 92 communities in Zomba and Machinga districts in rural Malawi. Some project activities include: (i) digging 32 new wells (eight boreholes and 24 shallow wells); (ii) rehabilitating and protecting 60 failed or unprotected water points; (iii) building 3,576 improved sanitation facilities to ensure the proper treatment and disposal of sewage wastewater and prevent illness; and (iv) providing training to women and men to help them maintain and manage water and sanitation facilities in a sustainable manner, including training on operating and maintaining simple hand-pumps. The project also supports community groups to develop and implement locally tailored fundraising approaches to finance the upkeep of the water and sanitation facilities, and to develop group leadership and management skills, especially among women.Malawi is considered a water-stressed country, with only half the rural population having access to clean drinking water and adequate sanitation. Water-borne diseases are among the major causes of death among young children in the country. This, together with pressure from population growth, makes urgent the provision of safe water, improved sanitation and the teaching of healthy hygiene habits.

The project aims to strengthen... the farming practices of more than 30,000 smallholder farmers in organic farming by helping them apply ecological principles to how they practise agriculture using participatory, farmer-to-farmer teaching methods. It supports the development of farmer associations and improved marketing through farmer-to-farmer exchanges and training. The initiative also seeks to pilot a youth-led small business initiative to promote the supply of nutritious foods on the local market while supporting youth livelihoods. The project aims to train 6,000 farming households on sustainable agroecological methods, nutrition, and gender issues and provide technical support to farmers in production and cooperative development. The initiative also supports 200 farmers on a pilot project of growing local yellow maize seeds to improve vitamin A deficiency in young children.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers.Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth.

This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram allows for the sending of 60 volunteer advisors, mainly dentists, optometrists and homeopaths mission. The program aims to 1) strengthen the individual capacities of local partners; 2) improve the practices of health and education professionals; and 3) improve the day-to-day practices of managers and staff of partner organizations. These health professionals will aim to help alleviate, on a volunteer basis, some of the most urgent health deficiencies among the poor, starting with children and school-aged children and their mothers, in regions lacking access to care. This will significantly increase the learning capacity, job performance and income of beneficiaries. In addition, the Canadian volunteers contribute to community management of certain health problems by promoting the establishment of fruitful and lasting collaboration between organizations from within the community and the services provided by public health institutions. The program also supports a public engagement program to form a body of Canadian citizens who are more educated, informed and engaged./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet d'envoyer 60 conseillers volontaires, principalement des dentistes, optométristes ou homéopathes, en mission.
