Women constitute 75 percent of... Kenya's agricultural labor force; however, gender inequalities often undermine their productivity and nutritional wellbeing. Such inequalities include unequal access to and control over land, agricultural technologies, extension services, markets, and climate information. Development projects often address gender gaps in resource allocation, with little focus on unequal gender and social norms. Studies on impacts of gender-transformative approaches to household and community food and nutrition security are scarce in Kenya and other parts of Africa. This research project aims to test two comparable but distinctive approaches and measure their potential for improving gender equality, women's empowerment and food and nutrition security of smallholder farmers. Randomized control trial design will be applied to compare outcomes of the traditional farmer field school approach and the gender-transformative farmer field and business school model. The 30-month study will involve 489 households for close observation while targeting 5,400 (3,000 direct and 2,400 indirect) beneficiaries from Kinangop sub-county, Nyandarua County in Kenya who will benefit from increased agricultural productivity, improved food and nutrition security, improved incomes and more equitable gender and social relations. Through this study, CARE will contribute to bridging existing knowledge gaps on the role of gender in agriculture, promote gender-transformative programming in light of a changing climate, and engage women to realize benefits of productive, profitable and equitable agriculture initiatives.

Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data - often called 'big data' - promise to help improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. Data now stream from daily life: from phones, credit cards, and televisions; from the infrastructure of cities; from sensor-equipped buildings, trains, planes, buses and factories. The data flow so fast that the total accumulation of the past two years—a zettabyte—dwarfs the prior production of data for the entirety of human civilization. Interest in capturing and analysing these data sets for public purposes - big data for development (BD4D) - is still relatively new, but accelerated when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the new Global Goals.Though big data sets, such as purchase-transaction or mobile usage data, are not new, until recently limitations on computer memory, retrieval and processing meant that only institutions like the US National Security Agency and American Express could afford the supercomputers necessary to analyse the huge volumes of information. Declining prices and improved functionality for hardware and memory have democratized data usage, and open-source tools (such as Hadoop) have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big-data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages. Interest in BD4D has produced a great demand for computer scientists and statisticians who can understand and analyse large data sets. Yet, as big data scientists are in short supply in developing economies, much of the BD4D research is coming from northern institutions - the United Nations and World Bank, universities and from the private sector [such as IBM and Orange]. This dynamic has meant that the issues deemed significant to the debate tend to be driven by northern concerns, rather than by southern voices and global South collaboration. The same can be said for big data's relationship to gender. The vast majority of data scientists are men, who rarely focus on designing applications that address women's challenges in the Global South. As such, solutions need to be found to address inequalities in capacities and benefits to big data. This grant will support research on big data for development that supports developing countries to measure progress on and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is a proposal jointly presented by LIRNEasia , a Sri Lankan think tank, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional –CEPEI, a Colombian think tank. The network will develop capacity amongst researchers from the Global South, focusing on activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to those that address gender related issues. The Canadian International Foo...d Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) supports applied research projects that address food security challenges in the developing world. It is jointly funded, coordinated, and implemented in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and uses the combined expertise of both organizations to maximize the impact of the projects funded. Through investments in applied research, the CIFSRF contributes to the development of more productive, sustainable, and gender-sensitive agricultural techniques for women subsistence farmers, with the ultimate goal of making food sources more secure and accessible, and the food produced more nutritious, for poor households. Women and girls are particularly targeted by this project since they face the heaviest burden of chronic hunger and malnutrition in developing countries.The objectives of the CIFSRF are: (1) to increase food security in developing countries by funding applied research in agricultural development and nutrition; (2) to apply Canadian science and technology expertise in collaboration with developing country partners to address food security; (3) to use research results to inform food security policies and programs; and (4) to identify innovations and scale up the most promising research from both Phase I and Phase II of the Fund to help meet future global food demand. Phase II focuses geographically on the 20 countries already targeted under Phase I as well as all other official development assistance-eligible countries in Africa.Project activities for phase II include: (1) developing farming methods that can better withstand the effects of climate change; (2) developing environmentally sustainable gender-sensitive, farmer-led research models for breeding and distribution of new crops or underutilized traditional crops and consumption of sufficient, safe and nutritious food; (3) improving family-based aquaculture; (4) decreasing domestic animal losses through development of vaccines; and (5) reducing post-harvest losses through adaptable and affordable technologies.Partnership is an important aspect of the CIFSRF and all the research projects funded are jointly conducted by Canadian and developing country-based organizations, such as academic institutions, private sector organizations, civil society organizations, or research institutions. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves. The project supports approxima...tely 102 Canadian volunteer assignments. The project aims to: : (1) improve knowledge and skills of partners to deliver effective and environmentally-sustainable food security programs, including animal health, livestock production horticulture, human nutrition and income generation; (2) improve organizational policies, practices and systems of partners to support the delivery of effective and environmentally-sustainable food security programs, for example financial management, monitoring and evaluation and communications / fundraising; (3) increase knowledge, commitment and action of developing country partners and target communities to identify and reduce barriers to gender equality in food security programs; (4) increase participation of Canadian women and men in sustainable international development activities; and (5) increase engagement in and understanding of international development issues by the Canadian public - particularly people involved with animal health and agriculture./Ce programme de coopération volontaire soutient environ 102 mandats de volontaires canadiens. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, neonatal and child mortality in select communities by working with local health authorities, and supporting the use of an integrated approach focused on health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.Project activities include: (1) training health facility and community-based health workers on provision of reproductive, maternal and child health services and best practices in sanitation and hygiene; (2) refurbishing or rehabilitating targeted health facilities with necessary infrastructure; (3) procuring and delivering essential equipment, supplies and medicines to health facilities; and (4) providing training and equipment to community-based health workers to promote improved nutrition and hygiene practices at the household level. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.7 million people, including 1 million women of reproductive age and over 650,000 children under five years of age.This project is implemented through a consortium led by Amref Health Africa in Canada, and international partners Christian Children's Fund of Canada, the Hospital for Sick Children and WaterAid Canada. In Ethiopia, Amref Canada is collaborating with Amref Ethiopia and Christian Children's Fund Ethiopia; in Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya, Amref Canada is working with their local offices./Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité maternelle, néonatale et infantile dans certaines communautés en travaillant avec les autorités sanitaires locales, en soutenant l'utilisation de l'approche intégrée axée sur la santé, la nutrition et de l'eau, l'assainissement et l'hygiène.Les activités du projet comprennent: 1) la formation du personnel de santé et des agents de santé communautaires sur la prestation de services de reproduction et de santé maternelle et infantile, et sur les meilleures pratiques en matière d'hygiène et d'assainissement; 2) la remise à neuf ou de réhabilitation ciblés des établissements de santé; 3) l'achat et la livraison de l'équipement essentiels, de fournitures et de médicaments aux établissements de santé; et 4) fourniture de la formation et d'équipements aux agents de santé communautaires pour promouvoir des pratiques nutritionnelles et d'hygiène améliorées au niveau des ménages. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. It also works in partnership with local governments and civil society organizations./ Le projet vise à améliorer les résultats en matière de développment humain en Afrique et en Asie et il est composé de quatre volets: (i) le renforcement des systèmes de santé en Asie centrale pour assurer que les personnes aient accès à de l'information et des soins de santé de qualité fournis par un personnel qualifié et des installations bien équipées, (ii) le renforcement des systèmes d'éducation en Afrique de l'Est pour améliorer la qualité de l'éducation des élèves du préscolaire et du primaire, (iii) l'amélioration de la capacité des organisations de la société civile en Afrique et en Asie à promouvoir l'égalité entre les sexes et à intégrer l'adaptation au changement climatique dans leur programmation tout en développant des moyens novateurs pour aider les personnes à améliorer leurs moyens de subsistance, (iv) la sensibilisation et la mobilisation accrues des Canadiens au développement international.Le projet soutient une approche régionale pour renforcer les systèmes de santé et d'éducation en engageant les agences partenaires du réseau de développement d'Aga Khan en Afrique et en Asie. The project intends not only to strengthen the role played by the universities in training workers, but also their role in promoting businesses' economic growth by supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly those managed by women. The project also intends to ease into training program diversification by increasing the use of digital technologies. Project activities include: (1) strengthening targeted universities' organizational management; (2) create skills for employment programs that are better suited to the needs of businesses and labour markets; and (3) strengthen collaboration between these universities and private sector companies.This initiative is managed by the University of Montreal - CHUM, International Health Unit./ Ce projet a pour objectif d'appuyer quatre établissements d'enseignement supérieur, soit les Universités Mohammed V de Rabat et Cadi Ayyad de Marrakech situées au Maroc et les Universités St. Joseph et Balamand situées à Beyrouth, au Liban. This project supports the Worl...d Food Programme's (WFP) school feeding program. Over the past four decades, WFP has become the world's foremost provider of school meals to poor children. In addition to providing free midday meals, WFP provides students with take-home rations for the family, which encourages parents to send their boys and girls to class. School feeding initiatives target the most food-insecure areas of countries with low school enrolment, irregular school attendance, and high primary school drop-out rates.GAC's support to WFP's school meal program is used to purchase, deliver and distribute nutritious food primarily to school children, particularly girls. School feeding is a means of increasing enrolment and attendance rates, decreasing drop-out rates, and improving children's concentration, learning and academic performance./Ce projet appuie le programme d'alimentation en milieu scolaire du Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM). Au cours des quatre dernières décennies, le PAM est devenu le principal fournisseur mondial de repas scolaires aux enfants pauvres. En plus de fournir des repas gratuits à l'école, le PAM offre aux élèves des rations qu'ils peuvent rapporter à la maison, ce qui encourage les parents à envoyer leurs enfants à l'école. Les initiatives d'alimentation en milieu scolaire ciblent les régions des pays où l'insécurité alimentaire est la plus grave, la fréquentation scolaire, irrégulière et le taux d'abandon au niveau primaire, élevé.Les fonds octroyés par AMC au programme de repas scolaires du PAM servent à l'achat, à la livraison et à la distribution d'aliments nutritifs destinés principalement aux écoliers, particulièrement les filles. Le programme d'alimentation en milieu scolaire permet d'augmenter les taux d'inscription et de présence, de diminuer le taux d'abandon et d'améliorer la concentration, l'apprentissage et le rendement scolaire des enfants.

The Global Concessional Financ...ing Facility (GCFF), established in July 2016, is an innovative financing mechanism designed to mobilize financial resources to support middle-income countries affected by refugee crises in the Middle East. The GCFF combines grants from donor countries with loans from multilateral development banks to create concessional financing packages for refugee-affected countries, initially Jordan and Lebanon.Supporting donor countries (nine donor countries) provide funds to the GCFF, with the World Bank acting as Trustee. As a supporting donor, Canada is a member of the Steering Committee for this financing mechanism. GCFF's overall goal is to provide critical medium and long-term development support to refugee populations as well as impacted host communities in Jordan and Lebanon. The GCFF establishes a sustainable, long-term and predictable financing platform for countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region by addressing the problems of gaps in multi-year and medium-term financing typically associated with development and emergency humanitarian interventions.Through access to low-interest loans, the GCFF enables critical investments urgently needed to support infrastructure projects and programs in areas such as education, health, and job creation to create sustainable development outcomes. This is expected to help countries better absorb the economic and social shocks of the refugee crisis and assure the well-being of vulnerable populations within their borders.This project is one of four parts of Canada's contribution to the GCFF, which has a total value of 40 million of dollars, including 32 million for Jordan and 8 million for Lebanon./Le Mécanisme global de financement concessionnel (MGFC), établi en juillet 2016, est un mécanisme de financement novateur conçu dans le but de mobiliser des ressources financières afin d'apporter un soutien financier aux pays à revenu intermédiaire touchés par les crises de réfugiés au Moyen-Orient. The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. It also works in partnership with local governments and civil society organizations./ Le projet vise à améliorer les résultats en matière de développment humain en Afrique et en Asie et il est composé de quatre volets: (i) le renforcement des systèmes de santé en Asie centrale pour assurer que les personnes aient accès à de l'information et des soins de santé de qualité fournis par un personnel qualifié et des installations bien équipées, (ii) le renforcement des systèmes d'éducation en Afrique de l'Est pour améliorer la qualité de l'éducation des élèves du préscolaire et du primaire, (iii) l'amélioration de la capacité des organisations de la société civile en Afrique et en Asie à promouvoir l'égalité entre les sexes et à intégrer l'adaptation au changement climatique dans leur programmation tout en développant des moyens novateurs pour aider les personnes à améliorer leurs moyens de subsistance, (iv) la sensibilisation et la mobilisation accrues des Canadiens au développement international.Le projet soutient une approche régionale pour renforcer les systèmes de santé et d'éducation en engageant les agences partenaires du réseau de développement d'Aga Khan en Afrique et en Asie. The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves. L'initiative permettra de s'attaquer aux défis que les agriculteurs et les PME à avoir accès aux marchés ciblés de corridors Bean, comme un manque de compétences, des finances, de l'information, de l'assurance, de l'infrastructure et de la capacité organisationnelle
