The project aims to reduce the... burden of sanitation-related diseases and improve maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Ghana's Northern Region. The project reaches 500,000 beneficiaries including 36,000 school children and 150,000 mothers; 120 schools and 60 health centers in 80 small towns. The project contributes to accelerating access to sanitation facilities and services in small towns to improve the health of Ghanaians. Activities include: (1) providing hygiene education and sanitation facilities (latrines and hand washing facilities); (2) improving sanitation and hygiene practices among beneficiaries; (3) increasing the ability of relevant district and regional institutions to provide sanitation services, and (4) facilitating private sector engagement in the sanitation marketplace./Le projet a pour but de réduire le fardeau des maladies liées à l'assainissement ainsi que d'améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) dans la region du Nord du Ghana. The project seeks to improve the availability and sustained use of affordable and improved latrines by introducing supply chain innovations in the sanitation and hygiene market. It works in open, defecation free communities across 36 districts and uses a solid marketing approach that focuses on the downstream health and MNCH benefits of sanitation.Project activities include: (1) conducting an initial market assessment in targeted areas, and designing tailor-made and sustainable sanitation solutions and sound sanitation business models; (2) local sanitation entrepreneurs producing and selling over 60,000 improved latrines to rural Ghanaians; (3) developing and delivering outreach and awareness activities to promote improved health through safe sanitation and hygiene practices; (4) providing technical resources and skills training to 180 new and existing sanitation entrepreneurs (small businesses) and government officials in delivering market-based sanitation services; and (5) developing financial mechanisms to facilitate the acquisition of improved latrines for families./ Le projet vise à réduire le fardeau des maladies liées à l'assainissement ainsi qu'à améliorer la santé, dont la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE), de 300,000 habitants dans les régions du Nord-Est, du Nord et du Nord-Ouest du Ghana. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves. The project supports approxima...tely 102 Canadian volunteer assignments. The project aims to: : (1) improve knowledge and skills of partners to deliver effective and environmentally-sustainable food security programs, including animal health, livestock production horticulture, human nutrition and income generation; (2) improve organizational policies, practices and systems of partners to support the delivery of effective and environmentally-sustainable food security programs, for example financial management, monitoring and evaluation and communications / fundraising; (3) increase knowledge, commitment and action of developing country partners and target communities to identify and reduce barriers to gender equality in food security programs; (4) increase participation of Canadian women and men in sustainable international development activities; and (5) increase engagement in and understanding of international development issues by the Canadian public - particularly people involved with animal health and agriculture./Ce programme de coopération volontaire soutient environ 102 mandats de volontaires canadiens. The project supports approxima...tely 102 Canadian volunteer assignments. The project aims to: : (1) improve knowledge and skills of partners to deliver effective and environmentally-sustainable food security programs, including animal health, livestock production horticulture, human nutrition and income generation; (2) improve organizational policies, practices and systems of partners to support the delivery of effective and environmentally-sustainable food security programs, for example financial management, monitoring and evaluation and communications / fundraising; (3) increase knowledge, commitment and action of developing country partners and target communities to identify and reduce barriers to gender equality in food security programs; (4) increase participation of Canadian women and men in sustainable international development activities; and (5) increase engagement in and understanding of international development issues by the Canadian public - particularly people involved with animal health and agriculture./Ce programme de coopération volontaire soutient environ 102 mandats de volontaires canadiens. The project aims to prevent st...unting among children ages 6 to 23 months and address micronutrient deficiencies among pregnant and/or lactating mothers in select districts throughout Northern Ghana. This project is an integrated agricultural and nutrition value chain development initiative designed as a public-private partnership and implemented by the World Food Programme. There are three interconnected pillars to this project. Project activities include: (1) enhancing the capacity of smallholder farmers to produce safe, quality staples (maize, soybean, cowpea and millet) and facilitate market linkages and sales to select local food processors, (2) providing technical and financial support for the upgrading of local processing capacities to produce safe, specialized nutritious foods and unfortified blended flours using local raw materials, and (3) promoting locally produced, specialized nutritious foods for nutrition interventions in the Northern regions and promote their availability in local markets for the Ghanaian population at large. / Ce projet vise à prévenir le retard de croissance chez les enfants âgés de 6 à 23 mois et à remédier aux carences en micronutriments chez les femmes enceintes et/ou allaitantes dans certains districts du nord du Ghana. Ce projet est une initiative intégrée de développement de la chaîne de valeur agricole et nutritionnelle conçue comme un partenariat public-privé et mise en œuvre par le Programme alimentaire mondial. Ce projet repose sur trois piliers interconnectés. Les activités de ce projet comprennent : 1) le renforcement de la capacité des petits exploitants agricoles à produire des aliments de base sûrs et de qualité (maïs, soja, niébé et millet) et la facilitation des liens avec le marché et des ventes à des transformateurs alimentaires locaux sélectionnés, 2) la fourniture d'un soutien technique et financier pour l'amélioration des capacités de transformation locales afin de produire des aliments nutritifs spécialisés sûrs et des farines mélangées non enrichies en utilisant des matières premières locales, 3) la promotion des aliments nutritifs spécialisés produits localement pour les interventions nutritionnelles dans les régions du nord et la promotion de leur disponibilité sur les marchés locaux pour l'ensemble de la population ghanéenne.

The project aims to improve nu...trition and food security of targeted beneficiaries. IDRC's Think Tank Initiative (...TTI) provides capacity development support to TTI-funded think tanks to strengthen their capacity in research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement and communications. By providing tailored support to address specific capacity gaps, TTI is seeking to add value to the long-term core funding provided to the think tanks. Drawing on assessments of grantee needs, TTI will implement regional capacity development plans that balance demand-led and supply-led opportunities. This project aims at enhancing research quality standards in participating institutions and stimulating their adoption of international research ethics guidelines as part of their standard research procedure. Using a participatory approach, the Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales (ASIES) (Association for Research and Social Studies) in coordination with the Latin American Initiative for Public Policy Research (ILAIPP) network, will deliver training activities open to grantee think tanks. The first activity will consist of a diagnostic exercise aimed at identifying strengths and weaknesses in research-quality assurance systems of participating institutions. This diagnostic will reveal the dimensions and indicators of research quality as defined by institutions themselves. Subsequently, institutions will be guided, through webinars and a discussion forum, to identify parameters of research excellence that best match the kind of research they conduct. The second set of activities will support institutions in developing research peer-review systems. Participants will be provided with introductory material and accompaniment to develop formal peer-review procedures and to build researchers' capabilities to become effective reviewers. Another set of activities will support institutions to adopt research ethics guidelines as part of the formal research procedures. Finally, an after-action review will be conducted in which participants will evaluate their work during the project. This project is expected to raise participant institutions' research quality standards and strengthen researchers' capabilities. The results of the after-action reviews will be compiled in an open document to share lessons learned at the end of the project.The Think Tank Initiative (TTI) is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions, helping them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally.

This project aims to improve a...ccess to safe, sufficient and nutritious food for women, men, girls and boys in Guatemala. The project supports the World Food Programme's (WFP) Purchase for Progress (P4P) Program in Guatemala. It promotes an integrated strategy comprising three components: i) Purchase for Progress, which improves the incomes of smallholder farmers through the increased quantity and quality of production and sales of surpluses to markets; ii) Scaling-up Nutrition, which helps prevent and reduce chronic malnutrition through distribution of fortified food and nutrition education; and iii) Resilience, which improves community conditions in disaster-prone areas, and enhances food availability throughout the year.Project activities include the following: (1) providing technical assistance to and sharing best practices with small-scale farmers on crop management and technologies to increase the quality and quantity of their yields; (2) promoting better post-harvest management to reduce crop losses; (3) assisting farmer organizations to increase sales and receive fair market prices from buyers; (4) purchasing food from participating farmer organizations' crop surpluses to feed up to 17,500 infants and children aged 6-23 months per year and up to 10,000 pregnant and lactating women per year to complement breastfeeding and prevent stunting or chronic undernutrition; and (5) strengthening the business management skills of small-scale farmer organizations and increasing women farmers' participation, representation and skills./ Le projet vise à améliorer l'accès à des aliments salubres et nutritifs en quantité suffisante pour les femmes, les hommes, les filles et les garcons au Guatemala. Le projet appuie l'initiative « Achats au service du progrès » du Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) et l'initiative «Renforcement de la nutrition - SUN» au Guatemala. The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves. In Haiti, a high percentage of... the population is exposed to aflatoxins – poisonous and cancer-causing chemicals which grow in soil, decaying vegetation, hay, and grains. They are regularly found among staple food commodities such as peanuts, and enter the food supply when processed. Children are particularly affected by aflatoxin exposure, leading to stunted growth, delayed development, and liver-related diseases. This proposal aims to reduce risk to aflatoxin contamination in peanuts among the Haitian population by applying proven control solutions during the harvest, drying, storage, sorting and processing.The project will design a safe and economically viable value chain for rejected aflatoxin-contaminated peanuts. Researchers will promote cooperation between public and private organizations in reducing aflatoxin contamination and exposure of the population to contaminated foods. Factors influencing the adoption of control methods by farmers, informal intermediaries (called madam Sara), artisanal and commercial peanut processors and other actors of the value chain will be identified through a characterization of the peanut value chain. Sustainability of the project impacts will be enhanced by improving the capacity of Haitian universities to carry out research on aflatoxin control, and of national institutions to monitor levels of contamination and to inform policies and interventions in favor of population health and food safety. Women and families will be the subjects of particular attention throughout the study.

This initiative aims to reduce... the number of deaths caused by diarrheal diseases by reducing sanitation risks in the most vulnerable zones of Artibonite. The initiative will also aim to improve access to potable water, to sanitation, and will make concerted efforts to sensitize families of the most vulnerable women and children to the benefits of improved hygiene practices. This UNICEF initiative will focus on the provinces of Artibonite and Centre, where cholera remains an ever-present threat and where diarrheal diseases remain the most common cause of mortality among children under 5 years of age. UNICEF will work closely with the Government of Haiti and with other important stakeholders who work in water sanitation, and hygiene, both at the national and regional level to maximise coordination and impact of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions.The project aims to improve access to 240,000 people, including women and children, to drinking water in communities across the provinces of Artibonite and Centre. The project will work to improve water, sanitation and hygiene in 140 schools, as well as establish well-managed and sustainable WASH systems in 30 clinics and hospitals.This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment./ Ce projet vise à réduire le nombre de morts causés par des maladies diarrhéiques en diminuant les risques sanitaires dans les zones les plus vulnérables des départements de l'Artibonite et du Centre. The young Canadians will support various community based initiatives that aim to improve poor people's living conditions, mostly by increasing women's income and improving theirs and their children's health. The project contributes to increasing the employability of young participants, providing them the skills and knowledge they need to secure employment upon their return to Canada./ Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), qui est relié au programme de Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international.Le Comité de Solidarité Trois-Rivières permet l'envoi de 37 jeunes canadiens dans 4 pays (Sénégal, Mali, Haiti et Nicaragua) afin de travailler dans les secteurs de l'éducation, de la santé, l'environnement et de la gouvernance. This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram sends 102 volunteer counsellors abroad. Its overall aim is to increase the protection of human rights in vulnerable communities, specifically to increase the skills of local partners in protecting these human rights. To reach these objectives, technical support and methodologies will be provided, activities that strengthen local partners' capacities will be led, good practices will be shared and more professional services will be rendered to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable people and provide partners with the institutional support they need for legal diagnosis and legal practices. The program also includes a public engagement component aimed at the legal community, including lawyers, judges and law students, as well as stakeholders that protect the rights of vulnerable people, informing them about international development issues and sharing lessons learned by volunteers./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet l'envoi de 102 conseillers volontaires en mission. Il vise de manière générale une protection accrue des droits de la personne des collectivités vulnérables et plus spécifiquement des compétences accrues des partenaires locaux dans leurs actions pour la protection des droits de la personne. Ces objectifs seront atteints par un appui technique et méthodologique, par des activités de renforcement de capacités des partenaires locaux, le partage de bonne pratiques et la professionnalisation des services de protection et de promotion des droits des personnes vulnérables et un appui institutionnel aux partenaires, notamment en matière de diagnostics et de pratiques au plan légal. Le programme comprend également une composante d'engagement du public touchant plus particulièrement les membres des communautés juridiques (avocats, juristes et étudiants) et des intervenants oeuvrant à la protection des collectivités vulnérables, laquelle vise à faire connaître les enjeux de développement, le partage des leçons apprises par les volontaires.

This project aims to close rem...aining camps where displaced people live in Haiti in a sustainable and safe way to improve their living conditions. The project has two components: (1) the relocation of 7,000 families with subsidies for housing support; and (2) the integration of three camps in urban areas, benefiting 1,500 families (about 5,100 people). Project activities include: (1) the registration of displaced people living in camps, monitoring of the identified housing and payment of subsidies to families; (2) a support service (psychosocial and medical); (3) the establishment of awareness workshops and training activities on health and housing rights; (4) technical and administrative support on the status of the targeted camps for urban integration; (5) development of community plans for urbanisation; (6) improvement of secure physical infrastructure; (7) implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects; and (8) creation of income generating activities./Ce projet vise à finaliser la fermeture de camps où vivent les personnes déplacées en Haïti de façon durable et sécuritaire afin d'améliorer leurs conditions de vie.
