This project aims to close rem...aining camps where displaced people live in Haiti in a sustainable and safe way to improve their living conditions. The project has two components: (1) the relocation of 7,000 families with subsidies for housing support; and (2) the integration of three camps in urban areas, benefiting 1,500 families (about 5,100 people). Project activities include: (1) the registration of displaced people living in camps, monitoring of the identified housing and payment of subsidies to families; (2) a support service (psychosocial and medical); (3) the establishment of awareness workshops and training activities on health and housing rights; (4) technical and administrative support on the status of the targeted camps for urban integration; (5) development of community plans for urbanisation; (6) improvement of secure physical infrastructure; (7) implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects; and (8) creation of income generating activities./Ce projet vise à finaliser la fermeture de camps où vivent les personnes déplacées en Haïti de façon durable et sécuritaire afin d'améliorer leurs conditions de vie. Le projet a deux composantes : 1) la relocalisation de 7 000 familles à l'aide de subventions pour le soutien au logement et 2) l'intégration de trois camps en milieu urbain, bénéficiant à 1 500 familles (environ 5 100 personnes). Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) l'enregistrement des personnes déplacées vivant dans les camps, la vérification des logements identifiés et le versement de subventions aux familles; 2) un service d'accompagnement (psychosocial et médical); 3) la mise sur pied d'ateliers de sensibilisation et de formation en santé et sur les droits en logement; 4) l'appui technique et administratif sur le statut des camps ciblés pour l'intégration en milieu urbain; 5) le développement de plans communautaires d'urbanisation; 6) l'amélioration des infrastructures physiques sécuritaires; 7) la mise en œuvre de projets en eau, assainissement et hygiène (WASH); 8) la mise sur pied d'activités génératrices de revenus.

The aim of this project is to ...increase the scope and impact of financial services in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and as a result, support sustainable economic development in both countries. The project provides FINCA Haiti and DRC with support to increase access to savings accounts, the use of credit and various financial services for unbanked entrepreneurs, with a special focus on women. These services will enable recipients to invest in their enterprises and better plan their futures.Project activities include the following: (1) the training and capacity-building of FINCA personnel and their clients, including with regard to measuring the social impact of its loans; (2) the development and delivery of the various financial products; (3) the development and expansion of branches and mobile and digital banking service networks in communities that are under-served in financial services; (4) the design and roll-out of specialized projects for agricultural entrepreneurs in Haiti, including financial services, technical assistance and skills development; and (5) the development of a health insurance product in the DRC.The project activities are intended to reach 500,000 people in the DRC, 54 percent of whom are women, and 50,000 people in Haiti, 84 percent of whom are women./Ce projet a pour but d'augmenter la portée et l'impact des services financiers en Haïti et en République démocratique du Congo (RDC), et ainsi de soutenir une croissance économique durable dans ces deux pays. The project aims to restructur...e and energize the market for efficient stoves and clean energy to at the same time allow for the protection of the environment, improvement of the health of women and children and strengthening the latter's economic power within new value chains for producing and marketing stoves and energy. The project will provide support to the government of Haiti with implementation of the national action plan for stoves and clean energy.Project activities include the following: (1) providing training to some fifty businesses so they may participate in the design and production of stoves using improved technologies; (2) providing businesses with support in marketing and creating business plans; (3) providing the Haitian government with support in relation to capacity and the development and application of regulations to improve market growth. The project aims to have 150,000 households adopt a clean and efficient technology and have 100 entrepreneurs in the coal and wood sector adopt better practices with respect to cost-effective and energy-efficient approaches./Le projet vise à restructurer et dynamiser le marché des fours efficaces et des énergies propres afin de permettre, à la fois, de protéger l'environnement, d'améliorer la santé des femmes et des enfants tout en renforçant le pouvoir économique de celles-ci dans les nouvelles chaînes de valeurs de production et mise en marché des fours et des énergies. Le projet fournira un appui au gouvernement haïtien pour la mise en œuvre du Plan d'action national des fours et des énergies propres.Parmi les activités du projet: 1) offrir une formation à une cinquantaine d'entreprises afin qu'elles puissent participer au design et à la production de fours à partir de technologies améliorées; 2) fournir un appui en marketing et l'élaboration d'un plan d'affaires aux entreprises; 3) offrir au gouvernement haïtien un appui au niveau des capacités, de l'élaboration et de l'application de réglementations visant une meilleure croissance du marché. Le projet vise 150 000 ménages pour l'adoption d'une technologie propre et efficace et 100 entrepreneurs du secteur du charbon de bois qui adopte de meilleures pratiques pour des approches rentables et éco énergétiques.

This initiative aims to reduce... violence against women during the elections in Haiti. The goal is to overcome the lack of representation of women in Parliament and promote their political empowerment so that they can take part in the decisions that affect the country's development and stability. Gender-based electoral violence is considered a primary obstacle to women holding leadership positions and their full participation in the electoral process in Haiti. To bring about structural and behavioural changes, the United Nations Women initiative proposes an approach focused on three areas: (1) a legal framework on violence against women during the elections; (2) governance for the principal institutions involved in the election process (the Provisional Electoral Council, the Haitian National Police; Justice; the political parties); (3) the macho attitudes and sexist and aggressive language against women during elections./La présente initiative vise à réduire la violence contre les femmes durant les processus électoraux en Haiti. Le but est de combler le déficit de représentation des femmes dans le parlement et de renforcer leur autonomisation politique pour leurs permettre de participer dans les décisions qui affecte le développement et la stabilité du pays. La violence électorale basée sur le genre est considérée comme l'un des principaux obstacles à l'accession des femmes au leadership et à la pleine participation aux processus électoraux en Haïti. Pour réaliser les changements structurels et comportementaux, l'initiative de l'Organisation des Nations Unies Femmes propose de travailler sur trois axes : 1) le cadres juridique relatif aux violences faites aux femmes durant les élections; 2) la gouvernance des principales institutions impliquées dans le processus électoral (le Conseil électoral Provisoire, la Police Nationale d'Haïti; la Justice; les partis politiques); 3) les attitudes machistes et le langage sexistes et agressif contre les femmes durant les élections.

IDRC's Think Tank Initiative (...TTI) provides capacity development support to TTI-funded think tanks to strengthen their capacity in research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement and communications. By providing tailored support to address specific capacity gaps, TTI is seeking to add value to the long-term core funding provided to the think tanks. Drawing on assessments of grantee needs, TTI will implement regional capacity development plans that balance demand-led and supply-led opportunities. This project aims at enhancing research quality standards in participating institutions and stimulating their adoption of international research ethics guidelines as part of their standard research procedure. Using a participatory approach, the Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales (ASIES) (Association for Research and Social Studies) in coordination with the Latin American Initiative for Public Policy Research (ILAIPP) network, will deliver training activities open to grantee think tanks. The first activity will consist of a diagnostic exercise aimed at identifying strengths and weaknesses in research-quality assurance systems of participating institutions. This diagnostic will reveal the dimensions and indicators of research quality as defined by institutions themselves. Subsequently, institutions will be guided, through webinars and a discussion forum, to identify parameters of research excellence that best match the kind of research they conduct. The second set of activities will support institutions in developing research peer-review systems. Participants will be provided with introductory material and accompaniment to develop formal peer-review procedures and to build researchers' capabilities to become effective reviewers. Another set of activities will support institutions to adopt research ethics guidelines as part of the formal research procedures. Finally, an after-action review will be conducted in which participants will evaluate their work during the project. This project is expected to raise participant institutions' research quality standards and strengthen researchers' capabilities. The results of the after-action reviews will be compiled in an open document to share lessons learned at the end of the project.The Think Tank Initiative (TTI) is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions, helping them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally.

Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie.L'initiative de Solidarité Union Coopération (SUCO) affecte 30 stagiaires répartis dans quatre pays : Sénégal, Pérou, Honduras et Nicaragua. This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram allows for the sending of 60 volunteer advisors, mainly dentists, optometrists and homeopaths mission. The program aims to 1) strengthen the individual capacities of local partners; 2) improve the practices of health and education professionals; and 3) improve the day-to-day practices of managers and staff of partner organizations.These health professionals will aim to help alleviate, on a volunteer basis, some of the most urgent health deficiencies among the poor, starting with children and school-aged children and their mothers, in regions lacking access to care. This will significantly increase the learning capacity, job performance and income of beneficiaries. In addition, the Canadian volunteers contribute to community management of certain health problems by promoting the establishment of fruitful and lasting collaboration between organizations from within the community and the services provided by public health institutions. The program also supports a public engagement program to form a body of Canadian citizens who are more educated, informed and engaged./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet d'envoyer 60 conseillers volontaires, principalement des dentistes, optométristes ou homéopathes, en mission. Le programme vise à 1) renforcer les capacités individuelles des partenaires, 2) améliorer les pratiques des professionnels de la santé et de l'éducation, 3) améliorer les pratiques fonctionnelles des gestionnaires et du personnel des organisations partenaires.Ces professionnels de la santé remédieront à titre volontaire à certaines des déficiences en santé les plus urgentes chez les plus pauvres, à commencer par les enfants et jeunes d'âge scolaire et leurs mères, et ce dans des régions dépourvues de soins. Cela accroîtra sensiblement les capacités d'apprentissage ou encore le rendement au travail et les revenus des bénéficiaires. En outre, les volontaires canadiens contribueront à la prise en charge communautaire de certains problèmes de santé en favorisant l'établissement de collaborations fructueuses et durables entre des organisations issues du milieu et des services ou institutions de santé publique. Le programme appuie également un programme d'engagement du public afin de constituer un collectif de citoyens canadiens éduqués, informés et engagés.

This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram sends 102 volunteer counsellors abroad. Its overall aim is to increase the protection of human rights in vulnerable communities, specifically to increase the skills of local partners in protecting these human rights. To reach these objectives, technical support and methodologies will be provided, activities that strengthen local partners' capacities will be led, good practices will be shared and more professional services will be rendered to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable people and provide partners with the institutional support they need for legal diagnosis and legal practices. The program also includes a public engagement component aimed at the legal community, including lawyers, judges and law students, as well as stakeholders that protect the rights of vulnerable people, informing them about international development issues and sharing lessons learned by volunteers./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet l'envoi de 102 conseillers volontaires en mission. Il vise de manière générale une protection accrue des droits de la personne des collectivités vulnérables et plus spécifiquement des compétences accrues des partenaires locaux dans leurs actions pour la protection des droits de la personne. This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram sends 102 volunteer counsellors abroad. Its overall aim is to increase the protection of human rights in vulnerable communities, specifically to increase the skills of local partners in protecting these human rights. To reach these objectives, technical support and methodologies will be provided, activities that strengthen local partners' capacities will be led, good practices will be shared and more professional services will be rendered to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable people and provide partners with the institutional support they need for legal diagnosis and legal practices. The program also includes a public engagement component aimed at the legal community, including lawyers, judges and law students, as well as stakeholders that protect the rights of vulnerable people, informing them about international development issues and sharing lessons learned by volunteers./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet l'envoi de 102 conseillers volontaires en mission. Il vise de manière générale une protection accrue des droits de la personne des collectivités vulnérables et plus spécifiquement des compétences accrues des partenaires locaux dans leurs actions pour la protection des droits de la personne. Ces objectifs seront atteints par un appui technique et méthodologique, par des activités de renforcement de capacités des partenaires locaux, le partage de bonne pratiques et la professionnalisation des services de protection et de promotion des droits des personnes vulnérables et un appui institutionnel aux partenaires, notamment en matière de diagnostics et de pratiques au plan légal. Le programme comprend également une composante d'engagement du public touchant plus particulièrement les membres des communautés juridiques (avocats, juristes et étudiants) et des intervenants oeuvrant à la protection des collectivités vulnérables, laquelle vise à faire connaître les enjeux de développement, le partage des leçons apprises par les volontaires.

Small millets have superior nu...tritional qualities and climate resilience, but small millet production and consumption in many South Asian countries, such as India, remains low. This project will address the challenge with research that will scale up small millet processing and value-added technologies. Technology solutions to improve processing Processing millets for modern food preparation is difficult, but new and practical innovations can make the grain easier to process, sell, and consume. This project will scale up use of two small millet production innovations developed through IDRC-funded research: improved post-harvest processing equipment and new millet-based food products. Engineers from Canada and India have developed two low-cost machines that farming communities, entrepreneurs, and food producers can easily use to separate the outer husk from the millet seed. This is a laborious and time-consuming job typically done by women. The innovation will increase local production and opportunities to use these micronutrient-rich grains in healthy food products. Advancing knowledge and healthy options Building on previous research that developed 40 new millet-based snack foods, baked goods, and other products, the research team will work with local communities, especially women's self-help groups, to implement this project. The project will take a supply chain approach to test interventions at different levels in the production-to-consumption system. This includes testing new ways to provide customized business development support to small- and medium-sized enterprises, training micro enterprises and farmer organizations, and linking key supply chain players. The research team will also provide support to equipment manufacturers to ensure they have the capacity and capabilities to provide dehullers and other equipment that meet the processing needs of villages, micro-enterprises, and other companies. Small scale, large impact By the end of the project, two new business models will be tested to help governments and companies expand millet production and distribution across India and beyond. The project will increase capacity within at least five companies to manufacture different dehulling and processing equipment. These companies will serve villages, micro-enterprises, and large food producers. The project will also increase skills and knowledge at 10 small enterprises (e.g., hotels), 150 micro-enterprises (e.g., street vendors), and three farmer organizations to market appealing, ready-to-eat small millet products to more than 120,000 consumers. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (GAC).

This research project will ena...ble two mid-sized Indian cities and their catchments to transition toward an integrated climate-proof approach to water management, providing greater water security to residents. Lack of water security in India Cities across South Asia face extreme water insecurity due to a changing climate and rapid urbanization. The cumulative impacts of urbanization and climate include flooding and water shortages within city boundaries and surrounding catchments. There are serious short- and long-term consequences on human health, physical assets, economic development, and social systems. Cities are not closed systems. In most cases, city-centric responses alone are inadequate. To work, adaptive climate-proof integrated urban water management must extend throughout the whole catchment, an approach known as integrated water resource management. This approach promotes coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, maximizing equitable economic and social welfare without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems. In the urban context, this also means increasing the climate resilience of homes and industries. Adaptation through innovation The project work will take place in two mid-sized Indian cities and their surrounding catchments: Solapur District, Maharashtra State and Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh State. Both face increasingly frequent drought and flood-related impacts, as well as water-use conflicts. The research team will identify and pilot specific interventions, which in turn will help build the cities' adaptive capacities. The interventions will be targeted to address the gaps and barriers that prevent city stakeholders from engaging with surrounding catchments to adopt integrated urban water management and integrated water resource management approaches. By the end of the iAdapt project, the two cities will have the tools they need to implement climate adaptation strategies through participatory planning, integrated urban water management, integrated water resource management, and access to climate finance options.

The development community in I...ndia is polarized on their takes of how to deliver social protection programs: some say it should be accomplished by cash transfer, others by commodity transfer (in-kind benefits). The proponents of cash transfers believe that cash is more efficient to deliver and it is less vulnerable to leaks. The opponents argue that the cash will not be used for basic needs and that it is better to deliver commodities and services directly after fixing the leaks in the system. Unfortunately, there is an absence of informed debate on this question.Against this backdrop, SEWA Bharat, a federation of non-governmental organizations of women working in the informal economy in India, undertook a research pilot to study the potential and relevance of unconditional cash transfers, also called unconditional basic income in India. The pilot study was comprised of two experiments in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. The pilot observed that recipients of the unconditional basic income transfer did not waste it, and in fact used it effectively to improve lives. Other positive effects of cash transfers were observed, including expanding opportunities for education, health, and nutrition for the participating families. These results were even more pronounced for more vulnerable sections of society, especially the scheduled castes and tribes. To discuss the findings of the pilot research study and the implications of unconditional cash transfers or basic income transfers for social policy more generally, SEWA Bharat and the India Network for Basic Income (INBI) will hold a roundtable with IDRC support. The roundtable will provide a neutral space to discuss the research findings, the implications of unconditional basic income for a developing country like India, and its potential to enable people to escape poverty. The roundtable participants will include senior policymakers, administrators, academics, and practitioners working on this issue. The objectives are to develop a plan of action to take the idea of basic income to the public domain and to disseminate the findings of the roundtable to build a consensus on the options among select policymakers, administrators, academics, and practitioners in this field.

Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data - often called 'big data' - promise to help improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. Data now stream from daily life: from phones, credit cards, and televisions; from the infrastructure of cities; from sensor-equipped buildings, trains, planes, buses and factories. The data flow so fast that the total accumulation of the past two years—a zettabyte—dwarfs the prior production of data for the entirety of human civilization. Interest in capturing and analysing these data sets for public purposes - big data for development (BD4D) - is still relatively new, but accelerated when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the new Global Goals.Though big data sets, such as purchase-transaction or mobile usage data, are not new, until recently limitations on computer memory, retrieval and processing meant that only institutions like the US National Security Agency and American Express could afford the supercomputers necessary to analyse the huge volumes of information. Declining prices and improved functionality for hardware and memory have democratized data usage, and open-source tools (such as Hadoop) have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big-data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages. Interest in BD4D has produced a great demand for computer scientists and statisticians who can understand and analyse large data sets. Yet, as big data scientists are in short supply in developing economies, much of the BD4D research is coming from northern institutions - the United Nations and World Bank, universities and from the private sector [such as IBM and Orange]. This dynamic has meant that the issues deemed significant to the debate tend to be driven by northern concerns, rather than by southern voices and global South collaboration. The same can be said for big data's relationship to gender. The vast majority of data scientists are men, who rarely focus on designing applications that address women's challenges in the Global South. As such, solutions need to be found to address inequalities in capacities and benefits to big data. This grant will support research on big data for development that supports developing countries to measure progress on and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is a proposal jointly presented by LIRNEasia , a Sri Lankan think tank, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional –CEPEI, a Colombian think tank. The network will develop capacity amongst researchers from the Global South, focusing on activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to those that address gender related issues. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. It focuses on three sectors that employ a proportionally large number of people with disabilities: cottage or home-based industries, the hospitality sector, and food processing. The project aims to improve th...e well-being of women and girls through evidence-based gender-sensitive policy and programming recommendations on sustaining and scaling up innovations for food and nutrition security. It reviews and learns from the experience of the sub-projects funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) Phase 2 project, with special attention to their sustainability and prospects for scaling up, as well as their positive impact on women's empowerment and gender equality. Findings are disseminated to stakeholders of the six sub-projects , as well as to policy-makers in Canada, development partners, and governments of low- and middle-income countries. Data is collected through field visits to six of the CIFSRF sub-projects, interviews with sub-project leaders, and review of secondary material for other projects in the portfolio of the 18 sub-projects funded by CIFSRF. / Le projet vise à améliorer le bien-être des femmes et des filles au moyen de politiques fondées sur des données probantes et tenant compte des sexospécificités ainsi qu'au moyen de recommandations en matière de programmes visant à soutenir et à étendre la portée d'innovations qui favorisent la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle. Le projet passe en revue et tire des leçons de l'expérience des sous-projets financés par le Fonds canadien de recherche sur la sécurité alimentaire internationale (FCRSAI) dans le cadre de la phase 2, en accordant une attention particulière à la viabilité et aux perspectives d'expansion des sous-projets ainsi qu'à leur impact positif sur l'autonomisation des femmes et l'égalité des sexes.
