The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves.

Integrated Approach to Improve... Nutrition in the Kolda and Kédougou Regions/Approche intégrée pour améliorer la nutrition dans les régions de Kolda et de Kédougou
more
|
This project aims at improving... the nutritional security of populations living in the Kolda and Kédougou regions by focussing on preventing new cases of malnutrition, especially amongst women and young children. These regions show malnutrition rates significantly higher than the national average, resulting in child mortality rates twice as high as the national average. The project seeks to reduce malnutrition by adopting an integrated approach consisting of the following three components: 1) promote better nutrition practices for vulnerable populations; 2) support communities in the production of more nutritious food; 3) strengthen the capacity of the government at the local, regional and national levels to deliver nutrition or nutrition-sensitive programmes.Project activities include: 1) train and provide equipment to 1,775 health workers to deliver behaviour change communication messages on appropriate nutritional practices to approximately 35,000 influential in household food consumption decision-making (mainly women); 2) support the development and delivery of community services related to maternal and child nutrition to 31,000 pregnant and lactating women and approximately 50,500 children under five; 3) implement community initiatives to improve the production and distribution of nutrient-rich food by 30,000 households, including training on good agricultural practices and support to the development of local entrepreneurship; 4) train and provide equipment to local and regional government structures leading to a better inclusion of nutrition issues in the design, implementation, coordination and monitoring of development plans./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la sécurité nutritionnelle des populations vivant dans les régions de Kolda et de Kédougou en mettant l'accent sur la prévention des nouveaux cas de malnutrition, surtout chez les femmes et les jeunes enfants.

The project aims to improve th...e well-being of children in eight regions of Senegal (Matam, Sédhiou, Kaolack, Kaffrine, Kolda, Kédougou, Tambacounda and Ziguinchor) and to offer them adequate protection during their schooling so that they can live and study within structures that ensure their safety and give them every opportunity possible to be successful. The project focuses on building the capacity of child protection and education actors, creating a safe school environment and raising students' and communities' awareness of children's rights. With a view to ensure appropriate support of child protection systems in school environments, the project simultaneously works on systems, services and programs, early intervention services and prevention.Project activities include: (1) training security forces, magistrates, social workers and school authorities on legal instruments relating to child protection; (2) developing a national action plan to counter child abuse in school environments, raising school stakeholders' awareness of preventive control measures for epidemics (e.g., Ebola hemorrhagic fever); (3) involving a number of stakeholders in awareness campaigns to discontinue early and forced marriage practices; and (4) raising economic operators' awareness of alternative solutions to child labour in mining areas. The project is expected to directly affect 750,000 children (382,500 girls and 367,500 boys), ranging in age from 3 to 18 years and registered in 1,700 public school facilities, as well as to affect indirectly 10,000 youth who are out of school or who have no schooling (6,500 girls and 3,500 boys) from 14 to 18 years of age. This project is one of the three components of the Strengthening Support for Child Protection in Education in Senegal project, valued overall at $20M and jointly implemented by Plan Canada, UNICEF and the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Senegal (through the Ministry of Education). It is part of Senegal's National Child Protection Strategy (SNPE - 2013–2018) and the Program for Improvements to Quality, Equity and Transparency in Education (PAQUET – 2013–2025).As with all program-based approaches, Canada works in close co-operation with other donors and the Senegalese government to promote the accountability, transparency and effectiveness of national systems, to increase donor coordination and harmonization, and to strengthen mutual accountability. The program-based approach also favours greater policy dialogue among donors, the government and partners. This helps to strengthen efforts to obtain focused and effective aid, as well as long-term development results.

Somalia is confronted with eno...rmous political and economic development problems. In addition to the difficulty of restoring overall political and economic stability, infrastructure and capacity shortfalls continue to plague the country. The collapse of the state over the past three decades has severely limited job creation, poverty reduction, economic diversification, and return to stability. Technical capacity was lost due to mass migration of skilled workers to countries such as Canada, the USA and South Africa. Canada hosts one of the largest Somali diaspora communities in the world, and Somali-Canadians form the most prominent African diaspora group in Canada. Many Somali-Canadians maintain strong links to Somalia, and some occupy senior positions in federal and regional governments in Somalia. Despite limited progress in restoring overall political and economic stability, many Somali-Canadians have begun returning to Mogadishu and other parts of the country for investment opportunities and to participate in the reconstruction process. They have played a major role in promoting the capital's recovery through the renovation of schools, hospitals, and roads as well as other infrastructure activities. Moreover, their activities have fueled the local real estate market. Little is known about Somalia's capacity for formulating policies that promote sustained growth and access of the poor to emerging economic opportunities. In addition, despite the growing number of skilled Somali workers in the diaspora, little is known about their potential to contribute to capacity building in Somalia. There is a need for an analysis and understanding of the opportunities emanating from linkages with the Somali diaspora that support the full realization of human potential, contribute to growth acceleration, and reduction of poverty and inequality in Somalia. The major objective of this study is to identify the potential to support capacity building in economic and social policy in Somalia via the diaspora. The evidence will be used to propose strategies that can support capacity building initiatives and promote sustained growth while improving the access of the poor and vulnerable groups (mainly youth and women) to expanding economic opportunities. The project will assess current capacity in Somalia and amongst the diaspora community in social and economic policy, catalogue current efforts to build capacity in Somalia, assess needs and opportunities on the ground, and analyze how current policies affect opportunities for women and youth. A team of researchers working with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) will thoroughly explore these issues by using comprehensive exploratory tools, secondary data, and interviews. The project's outcomes will be disseminated both locally and internationally, and will be published in a scholarly format.

The project aims to support th...e World Food Programme (WFP) in the fight against hunger. WFP is partnering with the private sector, agriculture producers, African governments and other stakeholders to support the establishment of commercially sustainable factories in Ethiopia and Rwanda to produce Supercereal Plus, a fortified cereal that responds specifically to the nutritional needs of children aged 6-24 months.Project activities include: (1) purchasing Supercereal Plus from the three factories for five years to be used for WFP operations; and (2) using Supercereal Plus a locally-produced product in its nutrition programmes in 11 African countries./Le projet vise à soutenir le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) dans la lutte contre la faim.

Efforts to strengthen knowledg...e and research skills in agriculture and food security in the uplands of Southeast Asia are essential to developing a strong network of professionals who can address some of the region's most critical development challenges. This funding will provide two-year fellowships to 30 students from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam to allow them to pursue master's degrees in science at leading universities in the region. The objective is to establish a critical mass of high quality professionals and researchers who can lead and develop sustainable agriculture programs in the uplands. They will also support initiatives in smallholder agriculture management in upland communities which are generally vulnerable to food insecurity. The Graduate Scholarship Department of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) will lead the initiative. Master's programs will include courses in fields such as land use planning, sustainable agriculture, human nutrition, environmental science, agroforestry, livestock production, animal husbandry, and watershed management. Students will gain first-hand experience in the uplands through site visits. They will also network and share information with faculty. The project will include three annual roving fellowship meetings and workshops for students in three locations. The fieldwork, research, workshops, and publications produced as part of this project will help facilitate innovative thinking and approaches to food security and upland development. Today's students are expected to become tomorrow's research and policy leaders in their respective countries.

This project creates the autho...rization for capacity building support to develop and manage the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). The fund aims to support the development of quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale farmers. It will also help ensure their use at scale.About the Livestock Vaccine Innovation FundThe LVIF is a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada), and the International Development Research Centre. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.More specifically, the LVIF will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability, and use of existing vaccines, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective research and public-private partnerships to accelerate the registration, commercialization, and use of vaccines. The research will also lead to a better understanding of disease dynamics and their impact, as well as the issues that constrain poor farmers from using vaccines. By bringing together all stakeholders - from farmers to researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and regulators - the LVIF will foster a vibrant and sustainable livestock sector in the target regions.Separate Project Approval Documents will authorize individual research projects and activities related to research uptake and scale up, program synthesis, and communication.
