This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH.Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems.The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results./ Ce projet vise à appuyer le Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM), une plateforme de financement multidonateurs qui fournit des fonds durables gérés par le pays pour mettre fin aux décès évitables de mères, de nouveau-nés et d'enfants. The proposed project would see... GAC signing a grant arrangement with the World Health Organization (WHO) in support of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) in the amount of $3M CAD for FY 2015-16 to FY 2017-18. PMNCH is a convening and coordination mechanism for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent (RMNCAH) health comprised of over 700 members representing seven different constituencies (academia, developing countries, donors and foundations, the private sector, NGOs, multilateral organizations and professional associations). This grant will support PMNCH's work on monitoring progress and donor and country government commitments related to RMNCAH and advancing the global accountability function of the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescent's Heath. Grants of up to CAD 1 million are awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments./ Le projet vise à améliorer la santé physique et mentale des plus vulnérables vivant dans des pays à revenu faible et moyen (PRFM) par l'octroi de fonds et d'une aide technique aux innovateurs qui ont trouvé des solutions. This project aims to fill crit...ical financing gaps to improve reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) in high-burden countries by accelerating investments in health systems. The Health Systems Bond is issued by the World Bank and available for purchase by private investors. Capital generated from the proceeds is channeled as loans to countries eligible for funding from the Global Financing Facility (GFF) in support of Every Woman Every Child. DFATD's contribution helps lower the borrowing costs for GFF countries who wish to access the funds raised by the bonds in the form of performance-based financing. Project activities include: (1) training community health workers; and (2) improving health data systems; and (3) increasing investments in health by improving outreach to private sector. Strengthening health systems is an important part of Canada's efforts to improve RMNCH as strong systems are central to the delivery of quality essential services for women and children. / Ce projet vise à combler des lacunes cruciales sur le plan financier afin d'améliorer la santé génésique, maternelle, néonatale et infantile dans les pays lourdement touchés en accélérant les investissements dans les systèmes de santé. Les obligations pour les systèmes de santé, émises par la Banque mondiale, peuvent être achetées par des investisseurs privés. Le capital généré par les recettes est transformé en prêts aux pays admissibles à un financement du Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM) pour appuyer l'initiative « Chaque femme, chaque enfant ». La contribution du MAECD contribue à réduire les couts d'emprunt des pays visés par le MFM qui souhaitent avoir accès aux fonds obtenus grâce aux obligations sous la forme d'un financement fondé sur le rendement. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) formation des travailleurs de la santé communautaire; 2) amélioration des systèmes de données sur la santé; 3) augmentation des investissements en santé au moyen d'une amélioration de la sensibilisation dans le secteur privé. Le renforcement des systèmes de santé est une partie importante des efforts que déploie le Canada pour améliorer la santé génésique, maternelle, néonatale et infantile, parce que des systèmes robustes sont indispensables à la prestation de services essentiels de qualité aux femmes et aux enfants.

The proposed project would see... PMNCH is a convening and coordination mechanism for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent (RMNCAH) health comprised of over 700 members representing seven different constituencies (academia, developing countries, donors and foundations, the private sector, NGOs, multilateral organizations and professional associations). This grant will support PMNCH's work on monitoring progress and donor and country government commitments related to RMNCAH and advancing the global accountability function of the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescent's Heath. The initiative focuses on the ...delivery of multiple and complementary interventions to support and build up the infrastructure, training, and sustainability of essential health services particularly relating to maternal and child health in Togo and Benin. The program is a concentric health clinic model seeking to (i)improve access to clean water, (ii) training in healthy practices and gender equality, and (iii) MNCH across nutrition, clinical prevention and disease management domains. Implementation will occur at the level of multiple rural communities across Benin and Togo. The beneficiaries will be mothers, pregnant women, newborns and children under five. Other direct beneficiaries include clinic workers who will be equipped and trained, other female villagers who will be involved in leadership opportunities, and all villagers through equitable access to an environmentally sustained clean water source and training in healthy practices. GAIN Canada will work closely alongside GAIN Bénin, GAIN Togo, Alliance de santé communautaire Canada Bénin (ASCCB) and Vision, initiative et engagement pour la santé (VIES) in order to successfully achieve their ultimate outcome. / L'initiative se concentre sur la prestation d'interventions multiples et complémentaires pour soutenir et améliorer l'infrastructure, la formation, et la durabilité des services de santé essentiels ,notamment en matière de santé maternelle et infantile au Togo et au Bénin. Le programme est un modèle de clinique de santé concentrique visant à (i) améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable, (ii) la formation aux pratiques de santéet d'égalité des sexes et (iii) la SMNE au niveau de la nutrition, de la prévention clinique et de la gestion des maladies. La mise en oeuvre se fera au niveau de plusieurs communautés rurales au Bénin et au Togo. Les bénéficiaires seront les mères, les femmes enceintes, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans. Les travailleurs de la clinique qui seront équipés et formés, les femmes du village impliquées dans les opportunités de leadership et les villageois en general bénéficieront aussi tous d'un accès équitable à une source d'eau propre et durable et de formations pour vivre une vie en meilleure santé. The Maternal Newborn and Child... Health (MNCH) Training Support and Access Model (TSAM) initiative's objective is to establish a sustainable, cost-effective model of delivering training, providing continuing mentoring, coaching, and outreach for continuing professional development (CPD) in emergency care and access in MNCH. It builds on the model initiated by the University of Western Ontario under the Muskoka Initiative, directly addressing the ability of health care providers in district hospitals and the health centers to care for women, infants, and children presenting with complications before, during, and after birth including ensuring sustainability through the development of a cadre of well-trained professionals to continue the training and mentoring of other MNCH providers in the future. Activities include: 1) delivering workshops and short-term training sessions with MNCH mentors and coaches; 2) delivering workshops with nursing and midwifery faculty to integrate enhanced MNCH, gender and health concepts in the pediatric nursing and midwifery curriculum; and 3) providing support to strengthen programs in pediatric nursing and midwifery. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of 3,300 women, 1,800 men, 670 boys and 630 girls in targeted areas of Rwanda and Burundi needing emergency obstetrical and pediatric care, as well as the health care providers that are receiving the training. The University of Western Ontario is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Rwanda Medical and Dental Council, the National Council of Nursing and Midwifery, the Centre for Public Health and Development, and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Rwanda in Rwanda, and the Association de Gynecologie-obstetrique du Burundi, Association Burundaise de Pediatrie, Association National des Infirmieres at Infirmiers au Burundi, Universite du Burundi Ecole d medicine, Institut National de Sante Publique and International Medical Corps in Burundi. / L'initiative d'appui à un modèle de formation et d'accès à la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) a pour objectif d'établir un modèle abordable et viable afin d'offrir de la formation, un mentorat et un encadrement soutenu et de mieux faire connaitre le perfectionnement professionnel continu en matière de soins d'urgence et d'accès à la SMNE. Elle repose sur le modèle lancé par l'Université de Western Ontario dans le cadre de l'Initiative de Muskoka, l'accent étant directement mis sur la capacité des fournisseurs de soins de santé dans les hôpitaux de district et des centres de santé à soigner les femmes, les bébés et les enfants qui présentent des complications avant, pendant et après la naissance. This project is implemented by... a consortium led by L'AMIE with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) which aims to reduce the mortality rate among mothers and children in Burundi based on the achievements of a previous project on maternal, newborn and child. The program will use former beneficiaries of the project Integrated Prevention of HIV Transmission From Mother to Child (PMTCT) in Burundi, to lead community outreach. This approach, in addition to the availability of new services at the health center, will increase utilization of essential health services. The project will also aim to improve the delivery of essential health services for these clients by strengthening the capacity of health center staff. Project activities include: 1) the design and management of a new maternal and child health program; 2) the development and transmission of a participatory training program of community ambassadors for group awareness; 3) the registration and monitoring of pregnant women; 4) recruitment of Canadian experts (provided by the SOGC) for the training of local teams; 5) develop the presence of L'AMIE within social networks in order to increase the visibility of its public awareness activities. This project contributes directly to improving the health of approximately 64,000 people, including 50,000 children. In addition, more than 415,000 people will benefit indirectly. L'AMIE is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: APECOS (Association pour la prise en charge des orphelins du Sida) / Ce projet est mise en oeuvre par un consortium dirigé par L'AMIE avec la Société des obstétriciens et gynécologues du Canada (SOGC) qui vise à réduire le taux de mortalité chez les mères et les enfants au Burundi en se fondant sur les acquis d'un projet précédent sur la santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile. Le programme fera appel à des ambassadeurs, anciens bénéficiaires du projet «Prévention intégrée de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l'enfant (PTME) au Burundi», qui effectueront un travail de sensibilisation de la communauté à la prévention en périnatalité. Cette approche, en plus de la disponibilité des nouveaux services au centre de santé, permettra d'augmenter le taux d'utilisation des services essentiels de santé. This initiative aims to reduce... maternal and child mortality in 20 villages in Lubutu and Walikale, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Current interventions to support child and maternal health are inadequate with only 17.7% contraceptive prevalence rate, 42% of family planning needs being met, less than 44 % of women receiving proper antenatal care and an average of 63 % of children being fully immunized (measles, DTP, and Hib). Activities include: 1) Training health workers; Sensitizing Communities members living in 20 health areas about reproductive health, family planning tools, water, hygiene and sanitation; 2) Training community volunteers living in 20 health areas in reproductive health, family planning tools, water, hygiene and sanitation; 3) Sensitizing pregnant women living in 20 health areas in safe pregnancy delivery and motherhood; 4) Building and equipment of seven maternity wards with basic material, supplies and equipment; 5) Providing supplies and material to support family planning implementation to 20 health centers; 6) Equipment of 30 mobile units with material and supplies to deliver ante and post-natal care in remote areas; 7) Building six blocks of latrines and showers, seven medical waste incinerators, placenta and waste pits in seven new maternity wards; and, 8) providing clean water to 4 new maternity wards and surrounding community living within 500 meters. This initiative will directly reach 77,209 people. Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Jane Goodall Institute of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Programme National de Sante de la Reproduction - Maniema Province, and Programme National de Sante de la Reproduction - North Kivu Province. / Cette initiative vise à réduire le taux de mortalité des mères et des enfants dans 20 villages du Lubutu et Walikale, en République Démocratique du Congo (RDC). This initiative aims to reduce... mother and child mortality rates in 15 areas of the Tshopo and Ituri provincial health divisions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Eastern Province. Health divisions have poorly trained workers, little capacity to plan and high rates of mothers and Childs mortality. Through this initiative, the delivery of adapted health services to mothers and children (age 0-5) will be improved by increasing the professional skills of male and female health workers. Furthermore, supporting the local financial capacity will improve health services planning and access to quality data. To increase use of these health services, education campaigns will be launched to teach about reducing maternity risks, family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, as well as early pregnancy.Activities include: 1) training health care providers; 2) strengthening executives' management skills; 3) building five maternity wards and 15 maternity rehabilitation wards; 4) providing equipment and medicines; 5) launching awareness campaigns for the prevention of mother-child HIV/AIDS transmission; 6) assisting 3,500 seropositive women and newborns; 7) launching an early pregnancy prevention campaign; 8) organising knowledge sharing and networking events for the general Canadian public in order to stimulate their commitment to support MNCH initiatives in developing countries.Direct beneficiaries are: 300,000 pregnant women, 90,000 spouses (men), 43,000 youth (age 15-24) as well as 455,000 newborns and children under five, of which 52% are girls. These beneficiaries will be better informed and/or will use the improved health services. More than 700 health care providers (nurses, doctors, specialists), and 355 health care managers and executives will have stronger professional skills.Oxfam Quebec is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: : Anti-Bwaki Mothers' Association, Ituri Provincial Health Division and Tshopo Provincial Health Division./ Cette initiative vise à réduire la mortalité chez les mères et les enfants dans 15 zones des Divisions provinciales de la santé de la Tshopo et de l'Ituri, en Province Orientale de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC). The project focuses on prevent...ing violence against children and youth and improving services for street children and at-risk families in five communes in Kinshasa. It does this by supporting outreach activities and programs that will improve the services offered at protection centres, health centres and in communities, taking into account the particular needs of girls and boys. The project also advocate s for adherence to and improvement of key child protection policies. Various mechanisms will be established to ensure that children and youth have the ability and opportunity to actively participate in and influence the nature of the services available to them and the decisions that affect them. / Le projet vise à prévenir la violence faite aux enfants et à améliorer les services offerts aux familles à risques et aux enfants de la rue dans cinq communes de Kinshasa. Pour ce faire, le projet appui des programmes et des activités communautaires qui amélioreront les services offerts dans les centres de protection et de santé des diverses communes, tout en prenant en compte les besoins particuliers des garçons et des filles. Le projet vise entre autres l'amélioration et le respect de politiques publiques clefs en matière de protection de l'enfant. Plusieurs mécanismes seront également mis en place afin que les enfants soient en mesure de pouvoir participer activement aux décisions qui les touchent de près ou qui portent sur la nature des services offerts à leur endroit.

The project works to improve t...he quality and accessibility of maternal, newborn and child healthcare (MNCH) in recipient countries by enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of MNCH programming implemented by Canadian non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The Canadian Network for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, facilitates collaboration and coordination among more than 100 partner organizations working to improve the responsiveness of programming to evolving needs and circumstances by enhancing monitoring and reporting tools used by NGOs. The project also supports NGOs in sharing information, results, experience and expertise in order to enhance the overall effectiveness of programming and to better communicate a comprehensive picture of Canada's development programming in maternal, newborn and child health. Key activities of the Network include: (1) carrying out regular reviews of scientific evidence on maternal, newborn and child health and sharing that evidence with partner organizations; (2) providing peer support to partner organizations to adapt and implement internationally recognized guidelines for improving maternal, newborn, and child health; (3) identifying potential collaboration opportunities and sharing innovative practices among partner organizations; (4) developing, adapting, and promoting common measures and methods for tracking progress toward improving maternal, newborn and child health; and (5) providing partner organizations and other Canadian stakeholders with the most relevant and up-to-date information on maternal, newborn and child health and on current initiatives in developing countries. / Le projet travaille à améliorer la qualité et l'accessibilité aux soins de santé des mères, des nouveaux nés et des enfants (SMNE) dans les pays bénéficiaires en renforçant l' efficacité et l'efficience de la programmation SMNE mis en oeuvre par des organisations non gouvernementales canadiennes ( ONG). Le Réseau canadien sur la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants facilite la collaboration et la coordination entre plus de 100 organisations partenaires qui travaillent à améliorer l'adaptation de la programmation à l'évolution des besoins et des circonstances en améliorant la surveillance et les outils utilisés par les ONG de rapports. Le projet soutient également les ONG dans le partage de l'information, des résultats, de l'expérience et de l'expertise afin d'améliorer l'efficacité globale de la programmation et de mieux communiquer une image complète de la programmation du Canada en santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile. Substantial progress has been made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health. However, this progress often conceals widening disparities in given countries or regions. This project aims to address health disparities and gaps in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), by prioritizing interventions identified as critical to advancing progress in reducing child mortality.Project activities include: (1) conduct and analyse research on health needs and solutions for mothers and children; (2) review and enhance existing policies and guidelines to improve MNCH; (3) develop and provide training on gender responsive MNCH interventions, on civil registration and vital statistics systems, and on health information management system; (4) test and implement models to address gaps in MNCH; (5) develop and deliver community awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on MNCH interventions; and (6) procure and distribute critical health supplies.This project is part of Canada's commitment for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité infantile dans les régions ciblées et à venir en aide à quelque 452 345 femmes et 3 740 379 enfants. Des progrès importants ont été accomplis en vue d'atteindre l'Objectif du Millénaire pour le développement relatif à la réduction de la mortalité chez les enfants et à l'amélioration de la santé maternelle. The proposed project would see... GAC signing a grant arrangement with the World Health Organization (WHO) in support of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) in the amount of $3M CAD for FY 2015-16 to FY 2017-18. PMNCH is a convening and coordination mechanism for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent (RMNCAH) health comprised of over 700 members representing seven different constituencies (academia, developing countries, donors and foundations, the private sector, NGOs, multilateral organizations and professional associations). This grant will support PMNCH's work on monitoring progress and donor and country government commitments related to RMNCAH and advancing the global accountability function of the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescent's Heath. This initiative seeks to impro...ving the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities. Activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training for health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, including providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government resource planning; and, (7) implementing digital and media campaigns to raise awareness of Canadian public on global MNCH issues. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1 million women, more than 900,000 children under five years of age, and over 200,000 adolescent girls, as well as over 1.1 million men with improved MNCH services. An estimated 1.8 million individuals are expected to benefit from the initiative's results indirectly. In addition, activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 700,000 Canadians / Le projet vise à améliorer la santé des femmes, des adolescentes, des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans les régions mal desservies grâce à une approche communautaire et à la collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. The project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport. Activities include: 1) train health workers in such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); 2) improve utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; 3) prevent illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda. / Le projet contribuera à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda. / Le projet contribuera à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. This project is implemented in... 9 Districts of the Northern and Upper West Regions of Ghana. The goal is to contribute to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity by making easily understandable maternal health information accessible to expectant and new mothers in an interactive setting, using Information Communications Technology (ICT). More than half of infant deaths in Ghana happen within the first month of life. A serious lack of health facilities and poor access to health services in northern Ghana contributes to the high regional maternal mortality rate. Activities are: 1) introduce an interactive charting process and other participatory approaches so that women have a voice in their own care; 2) mitigate both direct and indirect causes of maternal death, 3) address the poor general health of women, high-risk reproductive characteristics, and barriers to preventive health care and, 4) address newborn survival in rural, remote areas with targeted messages and interventions. Principal beneficiaries include 30,000 pregnant women and mothers and 30,000 partners and 15,000 infant girls and 15,000 infant boys. Salasan Consulting Inc. is working with a Canadian partner, Mustimuhw Information Solutions, to implement the project in Ghana with a local health development firm, Savana Signatures. / Ce projet est mis en oeuvre dans 9 districts des régions du Nord et du Haut Ghana occidental. L'objectif est de contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité et de la morbidité maternelle et infantile en rendant l'information sur la santé maternelle facilement compréhensible accessible aux femmes enceintes et nouvelles dans un cadre interactif, en utilisant l'information Communications Technologie (ICT). The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health of mothers, women, and children in situations of vulnerability in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project is based on three core program components that relate to CanadaÂ's commitment to the Muskoka Initiative on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: (1) strengthening health systems, (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases and (3) improving nutrition in women, including mothers, newborns and children. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases including those affecting women, mothers, and children; (iii) improve nutritional practices for mothers, women, and children, including optimal use of breastfeeding. / Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des femmes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité en Amérique latine et dans les Caraibes. The Improving Maternal Partici...pation and Access to Community Training (IMPACT) project aims to increase the utilization and improve the delivery of culturally appropriate health services to pregnant & lactating mothers and their children in 111 hard-to-reach indigenous communities in Guatemala and Honduras. Activities include: 1) providing MNCH centres with essential health care equipment and ensuring that they are adequately staffed with well-trained MNCH Aides; 2) delivery of lactation workshops, as well as one-on-one counseling and support, to encourage women to initiate early and exclusive breastfeeding of their infants for at least 5 months; 3) delivering awareness raising workshops among key decision-makers in communities of MNCH related health risks, and enabling the health-related decision-making of vulnerable women, and 4) delivery of nutrition demonstration workshops to pregnant and lactating women. This project is expected to contribute to the improved health of 68,400 women and children, including 13,800 girls and 13, 300 boys. In addition, more than 160,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly. CAUSE Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with CAUSE Honduras, CAUSE Guatemala and Instituticion Mam de Desarrollo Integral (IMDI). / Le projet Improving Maternal Participation and Access to Community Training (IMPACT) vise à accroitre l'utilisation des services de santé adaptés à la culture et à en améliorer la prestation aux femmes enceintes et qui allaitent et à leurs enfants dans 111 collectivités autochtones difficiles à atteindre du Guatemala et du Honduras. Parmi les activités connexes se trouvent : 1) fournir aux centres de soins de santé à la mère, au nouveau-né et à l'enfant (SMNE) de l'équipement sanitaire essentiel et s'assurer qu'ils disposent d'un nombre suffisant d'aides biens formés en matière de SMNE; 2) la prestation d'ateliers sur la lactation, ainsi que de services de consultation et de soutien individuels, pour encourager les femmes à pratiquer rapidement l'allaitement exclusif de leur nourrisson, et ce, jusqu'à au moins cinq mois; 3) la prestation d'ateliers de sensibilisation auprès des principaux décideurs communautaires sur les risques pour la santé liés à la SMNE et d'un soutien accru à la prise de décisions concernant la santé pour les femmes vulnérables et 4) la prestation d'ateliers de démonstration sur la nutrition à des femmes enceintes et qui allaitent. Many women and children in Gua...temala and Kenya are at high risk of malnutrition and mortality. Chronic malnutrition affects 48 percent of the population of Guatemala, and 35 percent in Kenya. Infant mortality rates range from 24 deaths per 1,000 live births in Guatemala to 52 deaths per 1,000 live births in Kenya. In Guatemala, for every 100,000 births, 140 mothers die due to complications from child birth, and in Kenya the figure is 488 maternal deaths for every 100,000 births. This project seeks to contribute to the reduction of maternal and child mortality by improving the delivery and utilization of essential and nutrition related health services. This initiative will: 1) increase the effectiveness of community referral systems; 2) increase awareness of existing health services; 3) strengthen the organizational management skills of local level health service providers. The project is improving maternal, adolescent, child and infant malnutrition through the promotion of local feeding and care practices, nutritious foods and supplements as well as looking into wider nutrition security issues related to access to food and income. Lastly, local nutrition related health information systems are being strengthened through improved management of data collection, dissemination and utilization of data for local, national and global decision-making. It is estimated that the Project will reach more than 2.2 million people; where more than 1.3 million people will benefit directly and more than 880,000 people will benefit indirectly in the Chiquimula Department of Guatemala and five counties in Kenya (West Pokot, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Kakamega, and Bungoma). The project is implemented by Action Against Hunger Canada in Kenya in collaboration with Action Against Hunger Kenya, Helen Keller International, and the Ministry of Health; and in Guatemala with Action Against Hunger Guatemala, Médicos del Mundo España en Guatemala, Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales, and local government organizations. / Bon nombre de femmes et d'enfants du Guatemala et du Kenya courent un risque élevé de malnutrition et de mortalité. The Project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality, and improve maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Guatemala's predominantly Indigenous Department of Totonicapán. Activities include: (1) training traditional indigenous midwives on updated MNCH practices; (2) facilitating discussions to promote inter-culturally effective health care and transparency between health authorities and community leadership; (3) conducting learning exchanges on MNCH practices among MNCH leaders and providers in Guatemala and Canada, and (4) training of traditional midwives and community health promoters in family planning methods and provision of family-planning counselling to both women and men. This Project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 240,000 people in Totonicapán, including 140,000 indigenous women and 37,000 boys and 39,000 girls. In addition, more than 250,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from the results of the Project. Horizons of Friendship is implementing the project in collaboration with the Asociación para la Promoción, Investigación y Educación en Salud en el Occidente de Guatemala (PIES). / Le projet contribuera à réduire la mortalité infantile et maternelle et à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) dans le département à prédominance autochtone de Totonicapán au Guatemala. This project seeks to improvin...g the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities. All project countries have established meaningful health legislation, governance bodies, and in some instances, the necessary infrastructure. Due to weak quality, inclusiveness (e.g. youth-friendliness), and gender-responsiveness of health services delivery and health care management, service delivery, operationalization and increased access and utilization of maternal newborn child health/sexual and reproductive health services (MNCH/SRH) require support. Specific challenges include: 1) weak health seeking behaviour by disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised women of child bearing age (WCBA) and their families; Particularly high MNCH/SRH risks exist for adolescent mothers and high rates of child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM); 3) WCBA's lack of decision-making capacity and low access to and control over social and economic assets due, to pervasive gender inequality; 4) inaccessible, fragmented and client-unfriendly health systems; 5) low numbers and inadequate skills of Community Health Workers and frontline workers to provide quality, gender responsive, adolescent friendly health care; and 6) irregular tracking and use of data by Ministry of Health, and poor accountability of health services to local communities. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training for health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, including providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government resource planning; and, (7) implementing digital and media campaigns to raise awareness of Canadian public on global MNCH issues. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1 million women, more than 900,000 children under five years of age, and over 200,000 adolescent girls, as well as over 1.1 million men with improved MNCH services. An estimated 1.8 million individuals are expected to benefit from the initiative's results indirectly.
