The project aims to reduce chi...ld mortality in targeted regions benefitting an estimated 452,345 women and 3,740,379 children. Substantial progress has been made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health. However, this progress often conceals widening disparities in given countries or regions. This project aims to address health disparities and gaps in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), by prioritizing interventions identified as critical to advancing progress in reducing child mortality. Project activities include: (1) conduct and analyse research on health needs and solutions for mothers and children; (2) review and enhance existing policies and guidelines to improve MNCH; (3) develop and provide training on gender responsive MNCH interventions, on civil registration and vital statistics systems, and on health information management system; (4) test and implement models to address gaps in MNCH; (5) develop and deliver community awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on MNCH interventions; and (6) procure and distribute critical health supplies. This project is part of Canada's commitment for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health.

In Peru, marginalized adolesce...nts face significant barriers to completing their secondary education, which perpetuates their social and economic exclusion. This project aims to support young people, especially indigenous adolescent girls, to exercise their rights and achieve their full potential. This is achieved by improving the education system, namely the curricula and the services offered in schools in order to encourage adolescents to complete their secondary education. The project also aims to improve the health and protection services offered to vulnerable adolescents, in order to ensure an environment conducive to their learning and development. The project aims to ensure adolescents are involved in making decisions that affect them, through social media platforms and artistic expression mechanisms. The project is implemented in two Amazonian regions (Loreto and Ucayali), in one Andean region (Huancavelica) and in the poor suburbs of Lima.

The Maternal Newborn and Child... Health (MNCH) Training Support and Access Model (TSAM) initiative's objective is to establish a sustainable, cost-effective model of delivering training, providing continuing mentoring, coaching, and outreach for continuing professional development (CPD) in emergency care and access in MNCH. It builds on the model initiated by the University of Western Ontario under the Muskoka Initiative, directly addressing the ability of health care providers in district hospitals and the health centers to care for women, infants, and children presenting with complications before, during, and after birth including ensuring sustainability through the development of a cadre of well-trained professionals to continue the training and mentoring of other MNCH providers in the future. Activities include: 1) delivering workshops and short-term training sessions with MNCH mentors and coaches; 2) delivering workshops with nursing and midwifery faculty to integrate enhanced MNCH, gender and health concepts in the pediatric nursing and midwifery curriculum; and 3) providing support to strengthen programs in pediatric nursing and midwifery. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of 3,300 women, 1,800 men, 670 boys and 630 girls in targeted areas of Rwanda and Burundi needing emergency obstetrical and pediatric care, as well as the health care providers that are receiving the training. The University of Western Ontario is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Rwanda Medical and Dental Council, the National Council of Nursing and Midwifery, the Centre for Public Health and Development, and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Rwanda in Rwanda, and the Association de Gynecologie-obstetrique du Burundi, Association Burundaise de Pediatrie, Association National des Infirmieres at Infirmiers au Burundi, Universite du Burundi Ecole d medicine, Institut National de Sante Publique and International Medical Corps in Burundi.

The project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport. Activities include: 1) train health workers in such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); 2) improve utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; 3) prevent illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda. This project seeks to improvin...g the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities. All project countries have established meaningful health legislation, governance bodies, and in some instances, the necessary infrastructure. Due to weak quality, inclusiveness (e.g. youth-friendliness), and gender-responsiveness of health services delivery and health care management, service delivery, operationalization and increased access and utilization of maternal newborn child health/sexual and reproductive health services (MNCH/SRH) require support. Specific challenges include: 1) weak health seeking behaviour by disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised women of child bearing age (WCBA) and their families; Particularly high MNCH/SRH risks exist for adolescent mothers and high rates of child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM); 3) WCBA's lack of decision-making capacity and low access to and control over social and economic assets due, to pervasive gender inequality; 4) inaccessible, fragmented and client-unfriendly health systems; 5) low numbers and inadequate skills of Community Health Workers and frontline workers to provide quality, gender responsive, adolescent friendly health care; and 6) irregular tracking and use of data by Ministry of Health, and poor accountability of health services to local communities. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training for health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, including providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government resource planning; and, (7) implementing digital and media campaigns to raise awareness of Canadian public on global MNCH issues. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1 million women, more than 900,000 children under five years of age, and over 200,000 adolescent girls, as well as over 1.1 million men with improved MNCH services. An estimated 1.8 million individuals are expected to benefit from the initiative's results indirectly. In addition, activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 700,000 Canadians. Plan International Canada is implementing this project in partnership with Promundo and th

This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH. Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems. The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results.

Supported by Canada, the Unite...d Kingdom, the European Union, Sweden, and the United States, the Health Pooled Fund aims to deliver basic health services to those most vulnerable (particularly women and children) in eight of South Sudan's former ten States. The project aims to strengthen government systems, principally at the national and county levels, and to improve the health of women, newborns, adolescents, and children in this fragile state setting. This project builds on previous support to the Health Pooled Fund by extending coverage to new geographic areas, as well as by increasing the focus on nutrition and community-level service delivery. The needs of women and children are prioritized through a focus on safe motherhood, reproductive health, treatment of childhood diseases, and an increased emphasis on gender equality and social inclusion.

This project represents funds ...set aside for monitoring and evaluation of Canada's support to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF) 2014-2017, as well as for technical assistance. For administrative reasons, sometimes the funds identified for this purpose are included in the main project budget and sometimes, as in this case, they are assigned a separate project number. The ARTF was established in 2002 to respond to the need for a dependable and predictable mechanism to support the Government of Afghanistan's budget. The ARTF is critical to building a more functional and representative government system that is able to successfully deliver services to Afghan citizens. The ARTF consists of two funding channels: (1) the Recurrent Cost Window, which provides funding for salaries of non-uniformed government employees and for operations and maintenance expenditures, to enable the Government of Afghanistan to deliver and manage essential services. (2) the Investment Window provides funding for priority development programs in key sectors such as education, health, agriculture, rural development, infrastructure, and governance.Canada's total contribution to the ARTF is valued at 136 million dollars and is divided into four components: (1) the first component provides operational funds to the government of Afghanistan through the Recurrent Cost Window; (2) the second component supports the System Enhancement for Health Action in Transition program (SEHAT) through the Investment Window; (3) the third component supports the Education Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP) through the Investment Window; and (4) this component represents funds set aside for technical assistance, and monitoring and evaluation./ Ce projet représente des fonds qui sont mis de côté pour le suivi et l'évaluation de l'appui du Canada au Fonds d'affectation spéciale pour la reconstruction de l'Afghanistan entre 2014 et 2017, ainsi que pour de l'assistance technique.

|
The goal of this project is to... reduce malnutrition by addressing the basic nutritional needs of women and children Afghanistan. It expands the existing project scope of the Improving Nutrition for Mothers, Newborns, and Children project from six provinces (Bamyan, Daikundi, Faryab, Kandahar, Jawzjan, and Sari Pul) to nine, including three new provinces (Takhar, Kunduz, and Nangarhar). The project seeks to increase the nutrition services provided for mothers, newborns, and children at health facilities and within the community. These services include providing micronutrient supplements, promoting better feeding practices for infants and young children, monitoring growth, and managing acute malnutrition. The project increases awareness and knowledge of the nutritional needs of mothers, newborns, and children within the community by providing training for family health action groups, community health committees, and religious and community leaders. The project also provides training for the organizations that deliver basic health services and for the staff of the Ministry of Public Health. This training covers general maternal, newborn, and child health issues; the Health Management Information System; and general management practices, including monitoring and evaluation. Finally, the project conducts practical research on integrating the management of severe acute malnutrition into existing national nutrition programs. This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn, and child health commitment.

This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world.

The project aims to improve th...e lives of women, newborns and children under the age of five living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) challenges. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years.
