This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. Le projet appuie les chercheurs et scientifiques admissibles du Canada et de pays en développement pour la mise en oeuvre d'innovations éprouvées dans des pays en développement où des personnes souffrent démesurément d'une mauvaise santé. Grâce au projet, des innovations à faible coût qui ont recours à des technologies simples et qui ont le potentiel d'être distribuées à grande échelle avec succès seront mises en oeuvre; elles font appel à des approches novatrices pour augmenter la prestation et la demande de services de santé locaux. Le projet vise aussi à explorer, à mettre à l'essai et à valider de nouveaux mécanismes financiers pour encourager une plus grande innovation et de meilleurs résultats en matière de santé. Les mécanismes de financement novateurs incluent des approches où les pays ou organisations bénéficiaires reçoivent un soutien financier fondé sur le respect de conditions précises, telles que l'amélioration de la santé des mères et des enfants.

This project aims to help stre...ngthen communities in under-served areas by improving education, vocational training and health care, and by developing local businesses. Project activities include:(1) provide equipment and training to improve schools and teaching; (2) increase access to quality healthcare and services, and develop local businesses and community networks; (3) provide better instructions and learning material for teachers, trainers, schools and students, especially women and girls; (4) provide local health providers and community members with improved equipment and health service delivery; and (5) provide training to local businesses including women entrepreneurs and farmers with improved business skills and micro-finance./ Ce projet vise à renforcer les collectivités de régions mal desservies en améliorant l'éducation, la formation professionnelle et les soins de santé, et en contribuant à la création d'entreprises locales. Parmi les activités du projet : fournir de l'équipement et une formation pour améliorer les écoles et l'enseignement; 2) élargir l'accès à des services et à des soins de santé de qualité, et créer des entreprises locales et des réseaux communautaires; 3) fournir une formation et des documents d'apprentissage de plus grande qualité aux enseignants, aux formateurs, aux écoles et aux élèves, particulièrement aux femmes et aux filles; 4) offrir aux fournisseurs de soins de santé locaux et aux membres des collectivités un équipement et des services de santé améliorés; 5) offrir une formation aux entreprises locales, notamment donner une formation aux entrepreneures et aux agricultrices sur le microfinancement et de meilleures compétences en entrepreneuriat.

The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). Pendant la première phase, GDC verse de petites subventions aux innovateurs afin qu'ils puissent faire de la recherche et formuler des idées prometteuses et novatrices pour régler les problèmes liés à la SMNE. La seconde phase comprend la mise à l'essai des innovations, l'établissement de partenariats stratégiques, l'obtention de fonds et de savoir-faire du secteur privé ainsi que la conception de plans d'affaires et de marketing afin de poursuivre le perfectionnement. This contribution represents C...anada's long-term institutional support to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), a non-profit international health research, service, and training institution. icddr,b uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate.icddr,b's mandate is to provide free, high quality health care for the poor in Bangladesh, including maternal and child health services and treatment for diarrhoeal and other diseases. It also supports research that is designed to generate the data needed to develop policies and practices to address significant health challenges in Bangladesh and other countries.Canada's support to icddr,b contributes to ensuring that icddr,b is providing effective, evidence-based, gender-responsive health care and health education services for the poor. It also ensures that the icddr,b can continue to conduct important health research that translates into policies that can help to improve the health and reduce poverty levels of Bangladeshis. Canada's institutional support is also helping to strengthen the management systems and improve the sustainability of the Centre./ Cette contribution représente le soutien institutionnel à long terme du Canada au Centre international de recherche sur les maladies diarrhéiques du Bangladesh (CIRMD – Bangladesh), un institut international de recherche, de services et de formation dans le secteur de la santé à but non lucratif. Le CIRMD utilise ces fonds, ainsi que ceux octroyés par d'autres donateurs, pour mener à bien son mandat.Le CIRMD a pour mandat d'offrir gratuitement des soins de santé de qualité aux personnes démunies du Bangladesh, y compris des services de santé maternelle et infantile et un traitement des maladies diarrhéiques, entre autres. This project seeks to improvin...g the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities.All project countries have established meaningful health legislation, governance bodies, and in some instances, the necessary infrastructure. Due to weak quality, inclusiveness (e.g. youth-friendliness), and gender-responsiveness of health services delivery and health care management, service delivery, operationalization and increased access and utilization of maternal newborn child health/sexual and reproductive health services (MNCH/SRH) require support. Specific challenges include: 1) weak health seeking behaviour by disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised women of child bearing age (WCBA) and their families; Particularly high MNCH/SRH risks exist for adolescent mothers and high rates of child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM); 3) WCBA's lack of decision-making capacity and low access to and control over social and economic assets due, to pervasive gender inequality; 4) inaccessible, fragmented and client-unfriendly health systems; 5) low numbers and inadequate skills of Community Health Workers and frontline workers to provide quality, gender responsive, adolescent friendly health care; and 6) irregular tracking and use of data by Ministry of Health, and poor accountability of health services to local communities.Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training for health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, including providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government resource planning; and, (7) implementing digital and media campaigns to raise awareness of Canadian public on global MNCH issues. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1 million women, more than 900,000 children under five years of age, and over 200,000 adolescent girls, as well as over 1.1 million men with improved MNCH services. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations. / Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname. Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition. Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

This project aims to strengthe...n income generation and promote maternal and child health, nutrition, hygiene, access to services, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in 14 municipalities in Chuquisaca, Bolivia. The project beneficiaries are primarily rural and indigenous women and men and municipal governments. Project activities include: (1) support for increasing family enterprise profitability; (2) adopting good health practices related to maternal and child health and SRHR; and (3) strengthening municipal governance in health and local economic development through improved management, coordination and leadership. Empowering rural and indigenous women in economic enterprise management is an important objective of the project./Ce projet vise à renforcer la création de revenus, ainsi qu'à promouvoir la santé maternelle et infantile, la nutrition, l'hygiène, l'accès aux services et la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs (SDSR) dans 14 municipalités de Chuquisaca, en Bolivie. Les bénéficiaires du projet sont principalement des femmes et des hommes issus de communautés autochtones et de communautés rurales, ainsi que les administrations municipales. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) le soutien visant à accroître la rentabilité des entreprises familiales; 2) l'adoption de pratiques d'hygiène exemplaires liées à la santé maternelle et infantile et à la SDSR; 3) le renforcement de la gouvernance municipale en matière de santé et de développement économique local en améliorant la gestion, la coordination et le leadership. Le renforcement du pouvoir des femmes et des hommes issus de communautés autochtones et de communautés rurales en matière de gestion économique des entreprises constitue l'un des objectifs importants du projet.

In April 2016, Burkina Faso be...came the first African country to introduce a national policy for universal and free healthcare for pregnant women, new mothers, and children under five. However, maternal and child mortality rates in the country remain unacceptably high, and maternal and child healthcare services in many parts of the country remain limited in coverage and quality.This project examines how this policy is being implemented in different districts and provides grounded recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness of, and adherence to, the policy. Specifically, the project will analyze existing health information system data and related data collection practices to optimize how the policy is being monitored and evaluated; identify and investigate causes for variations in costing within and among districts; and evaluate the effects of the policy on women's ability to make decisions related to their sexual and reproductive health, including family planning. It is expected to support current efforts to examine and scale up innovative health interventions in Mali and Burkina Faso. This will provide relevant and useful information for decision-makers at national and local levels to maximize gains in positive health outcomes and reduce economic and other inefficiencies. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

L'intervention consiste à app...uyer des centres de santé en régions rurales, semi urbaines ainsi que dans les régions affectées de violences internes occasionnant une problématique de personnes déplacées et réfugiées. Les centres sélectionnés ont déjà démontré le caractère durable de leurs activités, leur capacité à assumer une certaine autonomie financière et leur crédibilité au sein de la communauté. L'intervention renforcera la capacité de ces centres à promouvoir et à développer leurs services et particulièrement ceux auprès des femmes enceintes, des nouveaux-nés et des enfants 0-5 ans. Le projet vise à: (1) Rendre disponible en quantité et en qualité les ressources matérielles adéquates selon les offres de services offerts ou à développer, par une assistance médicale en médicaments, fournitures médicales, appareils spécialisés et mobilier hospitalier (2) Renforcer les capacités en gynécologie-obstétrique, néonatologie, prise en charge du paludisme et de maladies hydriques, soins primaires et la gestion des médicaments. Les résultats attendus sont: le renforcement des capacités techniques et de gestion des intervenants; l'amélioration de la qualité, de la quantité et de la diversité des services; l'accessibilité et la disponibilité des soins primaires et spécialisés seront augmentés et particulièrement pour les femmes et les enfants de 0 à 5 ans. Les actions s'orientent de manière à contribuer à la réduction du taux de mortalité maternelle et infantile au sein des populations ciblées.

This initiative aims to assist... the most affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa to improve access to diagnosis and treatment for the major causes of death in children under five years of age: malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea.The project builds on the World Health Organization's (WHO) experience in strengthening community case management of malaria (CCM), and focuses on integrated community case management (iCCM) of pneumonia and diarrhea. This approach helps to ensure that children have access to treatment for all three diseases. The program also aims to generate evidence to inform WHO policy recommendations and guidance on CCM and iCCM.Activities include: training of community health workers; developing supervision and training structures; procuring and distributing supplies and commodities; developing norms, standards and guidance to diagnose and treat leading diseases affecting children under five; as well as disseminating and incorporating CCM and iCCM guidelines and policies into national health care policies. The project is being implemented in five countries in sub-Saharan Africa: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Malawi, Niger and Nigeria./ L'objectif de cette initiative consiste à aider les pays d'Afrique subsaharienne les plus touchés à améliorer leur accès au diagnostic et au traitement des principales maladies responsables de la mortalité des enfants de moins de cinq ans, soit le paludisme, la pneumonie et la diarrhée.Le projet s'appuie sur l'expérience de l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS) en ce qui a trait au renforcement de la gestion des cas de paludisme en milieu communautaire et se concentre sur la gestion intégrée des cas de pneumonie et de diarrhée en milieu communautaire. Cette stratégie permet de s'assurer que les enfants ont accès à un traitement contre ces maladies qui constituent les principales causes de décès chez les enfants de moins de cinq ans dans ces collectivités. Le programme vise aussi à recueillir des données probantes afin de servir de base aux recommandations et aux conseils formulés par l'OMS en ce qui concerne la gestion des cas de maladies et la gestion intégrée des cas de maladies en milieu communautaire.Les activités comprennent notamment la formation de professionnels de la santé en milieu communautaire, la mise en place de structures de supervision et de formation, l'approvisionnement et la distribution de fournitures et de produits de base, l'élaboration de normes et de lignes directrices pour le diagnostic et le traitement des principales maladies touchant les enfants de moins de cinq ans ainsi que la diffusion et l'insertion de lignes directrices et de politiques en matière de gestion des cas de maladies et de gestion intégrée des cas de maladies en milieu communautaire dans les politiques nationales relatives aux soins de santé. This project aims to improve m...aternal, newborn, and child health services for up to 260,000 women and 140,500 children in Artibonite province. It supports the rehabilitation of nine maternity clinics and seven community health centres and includes repairing infrastructure, installing equipment, and providing staff training. Five of the maternity clinics offer basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care. The other four offer a higher level of care, including caesarean sections and blood transfusions. The community clinics offer basic services for children under five years of age in remote rural areas, including routine vaccinations, vitamin A distribution, growth monitoring, oral rehydration therapy, and deworming. The project supports 40 water and sanitation initiatives that aim to prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera and improve coordination and referrals between community and province-wide service providers.This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment.This project has two components. It has been divided for administrative reasons./ Ce projet vise à améliorer les services en matière de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants pour jusqu'à 260 000 femmes et 140 500 enfants dans la province de l'Artibonite. Il appuie la remise en état de neuf cliniques d'obstétrique et sept centres de santé communautaires, y compris la réparation des infrastructures, l'installation d'équipements et la formation du personnel. Cinq des cliniques d'obstétrique s'occupent de soins obstétricaux et néonatals d'urgence, tandis que les quatre autres dispensent des soins plus poussés, y compris des césariennes et des transfusions sanguines. Les cliniques communautaires offrent quant à elles, des services de base destinés aux enfants de moins de cinq ans dans les régions rurales isolées, notamment des services de vaccination systématique, de distribution de suppléments de vitamine A, de suivi de la croissance, de réhydratation par voie orale et de déparasitage. AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly.Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya./ Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. This program seeks to resolve ...pressing health systems challenges to improve primary health care related to maternal, newborn and child health through implementation research. In doing so, the program supports two Health Policy and Research Organizations (HPROs) and up to twenty Implementation Research Teams (IRTs), each associated with one of the two HPROs. Supported by the HPROs, the IRTs undertake implementation research relevant to the target countries primary health care needs. The focus of the program is in nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa including: Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique, Mali, Senegal, South Sudan, Malawi and Nigeria. These countries are both CIDA's priority countries as well as the Muskoka Initiatives' countries of focus. The program adds value to international development health efforts by contributing to the evidence base to address developing countries health care needs and by translating that knowledge into effective policies and programs that make a significant and sustainable impact. In turn, these efforts will contribute to saving lives and provide sustainable solutions to the establishment of effective primary health care services in developing countries. / Ce programme cherche à régler des problèmes pressants liés aux systèmes de santé afin d'améliorer les soins de santé primaires à l'intention des mères, des nouveau nés et des enfants par la conduite de recherche. Ce faisant, le programme appuie deux organismes de recherche et d'élaboration de politiques en matière de santé et quelque 20 équipes de recherche sur la mise en oeuvre, chacune associée à l'un des deux organismes. Appuyées par ces organismes, les équipes mettent en oeuvre des recherches pertinentes pour répondre aux besoins des pays ciblés en matière de soins de santé primaires. Le programme met l'accent sur neuf pays d'Afrique subsaharienne : l'Éthiopie, le Ghana, la Tanzanie, le Mozambique, le Mali, le Sénégal, le Soudan du Sud, le Malawi et le Nigéria. Ceux ci sont des pays prioritaires de l'ACDI ainsi que des pays ciblés par l'Initiative de Muskoka. Le programme ajoute de la valeur aux efforts internationaux de développement de la santé par ses contributions données probantes servant à répondre aux besoins des pays en développement en matière de soins de santé et en traduisant ces connaissances en politiques et en programmes efficaces, de manière à apporter des changements importants et durables. This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children.Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation.Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. Le projet appuie les chercheurs et scientifiques admissibles du Canada et de pays en développement pour la mise en œuvre d'innovations éprouvées dans des pays en développement où des personnes souffrent démesurément d'une mauvaise santé. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations. / Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations. / Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). The initiative supports the im...plementation of maternal, newborn and child health programs, contributing to the reduction in the number of maternal, newborn and child deaths in the country's northern region by working with the Ministry of health and the local population. Activities include: 1) training health managers and health care providers to deliver high quality health services, including obstetric care; 2) rehabilitating health centers and providing essential medical equipment; 3) raising awareness of local populations on the benefits of public health services, including on the right to health; and, informing and engaging the Canadian public on maternal, newborn and child health issues in Haiti through media campaigns and learning events.This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 400,000 beneficiaries, as well as to improved knowledge on maternal, newborn and child health issues in Haiti for approximately 6,000 Canadians.This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Université de Montréal, and including the Centre d'étude et de coopération internationale./ Le projet appuie la mise en place de programmes de santé pour les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants, en collaboration avec le ministère de la Santé et la population locale, afin de contribuer à la réduction du nombre de décès chez les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants dans le nord du pays. This project seeks to improvin...g the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities.All project countries have established meaningful health legislation, governance bodies, and in some instances, the necessary infrastructure. Due to weak quality, inclusiveness (e.g. youth-friendliness), and gender-responsiveness of health services delivery and health care management, service delivery, operationalization and increased access and utilization of maternal newborn child health/sexual and reproductive health services (MNCH/SRH) require support. Specific challenges include: 1) weak health seeking behaviour by disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised women of child bearing age (WCBA) and their families; Particularly high MNCH/SRH risks exist for adolescent mothers and high rates of child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM); 3) WCBA's lack of decision-making capacity and low access to and control over social and economic assets due, to pervasive gender inequality; 4) inaccessible, fragmented and client-unfriendly health systems; 5) low numbers and inadequate skills of Community Health Workers and frontline workers to provide quality, gender responsive, adolescent friendly health care; and 6) irregular tracking and use of data by Ministry of Health, and poor accountability of health services to local communities.Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training for health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, including providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government resource planning; and, (7) implementing digital and media campaigns to raise awareness of Canadian public on global MNCH issues. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1 million women, more than 900,000 children under five years of age, and over 200,000 adolescent girls, as well as over 1.1 million men with improved MNCH services. An estimated 1.8 million individuals are expected to benefit from the initiative's results indirectly. Haiti is one of the countries ...most affected by maternal mortality and child morbidity. The towns of Leogane and Gressier are located in the West department, where the population is densest and highest. This is also where the use of health institutions, consultations, coverage and assisted deliveries are lowest.This initiative aims to reduce mortality rates among pregnant women, newborns and children under five in Haiti by supporting four healthcare facilities to provide obstetrics and neonatal emergency services. Activities include: 1) training healthcare personnel in reproductive health; 2) implementing a network of 50 polyvalent community healthcare officers to increase offer and usage of available maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services; 3) rehabilitating and building community healthcare centres to facilitate efficient service delivery; 4) stocking community healthcare centres in target communities with medical supplies, basic medicine and necessary medical equipment; and 5) implementing a functional and effective integrated approach and coordinating mechanism amongst main stakeholders.The project directly benefits approximately 30,000 women, men and children residing in the Léogâne and Gressier communities, and benefits indirectly 224,000 people living in these two communities surrounding areas.It also contributes to helping 15,000 people in Canada to understand issues related to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Haiti.The project is implemented by a consortium lead by the Léger Foundation in collaboration with the Centre de coopération internationale en santé et développement (CCISD). It is also implemented with the collaboration of the following local partners: l'Unité Communale de Santé (UCS) de Léogane, under the Direction Sanitaire de l'Ouest du Ministère de la Santé publique et de la Population of the Government of Haiti, and the Sœurs missionnaires du Christ Roi./ Haïti fait partie des pays les plus touchés par la mortalité et morbidité maternelles et infantiles. Les communes de Léogâne et Gressier sont situées dans le département de l'Ouest où la population est la plus dense et la plus élevée. C'est aussi l'endroit où la fréquentation des institutions sanitaires, de consultations, de couverture et d'accouchements assistés sont les plus faibles.Cette initiative vise à réduire les taux de mortalité chez les femmes enceintes, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans en Haïti en fournissant des appuis à quatre établissements de santé afin d'offrir des services obstétricaux et néonataux d'urgence. The objective of this initiati...ve is to increase the access of quality health services to women and children. The project supports 45 referral hospitals (that are more specialized and have the following basic services: medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology) through performance-based contracts to improve the quality and quantity of reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services. The project also supports the central and departmental levels' governance to ensure an efficient management and quality control and the monitoring of the performance of hospitals performances. Finally, the initiative supports the implementation of a coordinated network between the different levels of the health system to improve the care for women and children./L'objectif de l'initiative est d'accroître l'accès des femmes et des enfants à des services de santé de qualité. Le projet appuie 45 hôpitaux de référence (hôpitaux plus spécialisés disposant des services de base suivants : médecine, chirurgie, pédiatrie, obstétrique et gynécologie) à travers des contrats basés sur les résultats afin d'améliorer la qualité et la quantité des services de santé de la reproduction, des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants. Le projet appuie également la gouvernance aux niveaux central et départemental afin d'assurer une gestion, un contrôle de qualité et un suivi efficace de la performance des hôpitaux. This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. Le projet appuie les chercheurs et scientifiques admissibles du Canada et de pays en développement pour la mise en oeuvre d'innovations éprouvées dans des pays en développement où des personnes souffrent démesurément d'une mauvaise santé. Grâce au projet, des innovations à faible coût qui ont recours à des technologies simples et qui ont le potentiel d'être distribuées à grande échelle avec succès seront mises en oeuvre; elles font appel à des approches novatrices pour augmenter la prestation et la demande de services de santé locaux. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development.The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. This project aims to help stre...ngthen communities in under-served areas by improving education, vocational training and health care, and by developing local businesses. Project activities include:(1) provide equipment and training to improve schools and teaching; (2) increase access to quality healthcare and services, and develop local businesses and community networks; (3) provide better instructions and learning material for teachers, trainers, schools and students, especially women and girls; (4) provide local health providers and community members with improved equipment and health service delivery; and (5) provide training to local businesses including women entrepreneurs and farmers with improved business skills and micro-finance./ Ce projet vise à renforcer les collectivités de régions mal desservies en améliorant l'éducation, la formation professionnelle et les soins de santé, et en contribuant à la création d'entreprises locales. Parmi les activités du projet : fournir de l'équipement et une formation pour améliorer les écoles et l'enseignement; 2) élargir l'accès à des services et à des soins de santé de qualité, et créer des entreprises locales et des réseaux communautaires; 3) fournir une formation et des documents d'apprentissage de plus grande qualité aux enseignants, aux formateurs, aux écoles et aux élèves, particulièrement aux femmes et aux filles; 4) offrir aux fournisseurs de soins de santé locaux et aux membres des collectivités un équipement et des services de santé améliorés; 5) offrir une formation aux entreprises locales, notamment donner une formation aux entrepreneures et aux agricultrices sur le microfinancement et de meilleures compétences en entrepreneuriat.
