The goal of this project is to... improve the health of women and girls, especially mothers, in six districts of the Tabora region. It aims to reduce the barriers that prevent women in rural areas from getting access to the health services they require, to provide better-quality health services for mothers and children in rural areas, and to improve the ability of community health management teams to deliver quality health services. The project enhances women's ability to pay for health services; improves the knowledge and skills of health workers; and improves the ability of district-level health management teams to plan, budget, manage, monitor, and evaluate the health services provided in their districts. The project also builds on the government's community-based health worker program by training volunteer health workers to provide health education and information to women and their households. The project is expected to provide quality health services to over 400,000 women and adolescent girls and to 5,800 newborns. CARE Canada implements the project in collaboration with CARE Tanzania. CARE Tanzania works with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and international and local non-governmental organizations to address gaps in health services at the community and district levels. This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn and child health commitment. / L'objectif de ce projet est d'améliorer la santé des femmes et des filles, en particulier des mères, dans six districts de la région de Tabora. Il vise à réduire les obstacles qui empêchent les femmes des régions rurales d'avoir accès aux services de santé dont elles ont besoin, à fournir des services de santé de meilleure qualité pour les mères et les enfants dans les régions rurales et à accroitre les capacités des équipes de gestion de la santé communautaire à fournir des services de santé de qualité. The project helps women of chi...ldbearing age maintain better health and helps to increase survival rates for children under five in Tanzania. It aims to improve the ability of Tanzania's health system to meet the needs of mothers and children. The project works to bring affordable and quality health services for women and children to front-line health facilities in under-served communities. This makes it easier for lower-income and poorer communities to use these services. The project also works to improve health, hygiene, and nutrition practices in local communities through health education programs within the communities and by working closely with local organizations and community leaders. Specific project activities include: strengthening patient referral systems, placing skilled birth attendants within Aga Khan Primary Medical Centres, training public and private health care workers and midwives, and providing basic equipment and supplies for the Primary Medical Centres. The project is expected to help approximately 700,000 people, including women of childbearing age, pregnant women, newborns, and children. Aga Khan Foundation Canada and the Aga Khan Health Services Tanzania work in partnership with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and local governments to implement the project. The project aims to improve he...alth services for mothers, newborn babies, and young children in all five districts of the Simiyu region in Tanzania. The project is designed to strengthen existing health systems and to empower community members, especially women, to demand the health services they require, to make choices that support good health, and to get involved in managing local health care services. Specific activities include refurbishing and equipping health centres and district hospitals, providing training for local government officials to help them better manage and prioritize health services for mothers and children, and providing training for health workers with a focus on gender equality and public health issues. The project also supports community engagement activities that help local communities become more aware of issues relating to the health of women and children and to gender equality. The project provides community health workers with essential tools for treating women and children and training in home-based life-saving skills, birth planning, the treatment of childhood illnesses, and involving men in supporting the health of women and children in their community. This project is expected to directly help 108,000 pregnant women, 20,000 infants, and 114,000 children under five and indirectly help another 400,000 women and their families. The African Medical and Research Foundation is working in partnership with the Government of Tanzania, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and local government authorities to implement the project. The project is designed to strengthen existing health systems and to empower community members, especially women, to demand the health services they require, to make choices that support good health, and to get involved in managing local health care services. Specific activities include refurbishing and equipping health centres and district hospitals, providing training for local government officials to help them better manage and prioritize health services for mothers and children, and providing training for health workers with a focus on gender equality and public health issues. The project also supports community engagement activities that help local communities become more aware of issues relating to the health of women and children and to gender equality. The project provides community health workers with essential tools for treating women and children and training in home-based life-saving skills, birth planning, the treatment of childhood illnesses, and involving men in supporting the health of women and children in their community. This project is expected to directly help 108,000 pregnant women, 20,000 infants, and 114,000 children under five and indirectly help another 400,000 women and their families. The African Medical and Research Foundation is working in partnership with the Government of Tanzania, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and local government authorities to implement the project. This project aims to reduce th...e number of deaths among mothers, newborns, and young children by improving the health services available in four rural districts in Rukwa and Mwanza Regions. It supports Tanzania in achieving national targets for reducing child mortality and improving maternal health (Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5). The project is designed to provide women with greater access to good-quality, reliable health services. It helps to ensure that district health facilities offer essential health services for women and children; it provides training for health care workers in emergency care for pregnant women, new mothers, and newborn babies; and it strengthens the management and supervision practices in health care facilities. The project is also designed to improve the ability of men and women in these communities to recognize, prevent, and respond to maternal and child health issues. The project includes: organizing community events and mass media campaigns, training community theatre groups, and selecting peer youth educators and male champions to raise awareness about potential health issues; conducting home visits to provide pre-natal and post-natal care and care for newborns and young children; and equipping community health workers to provide services in remote areas and to refer patients to health centres where necessary. The project places special emphasis on the role that men can play in helping to improve the health of women and children. This project is expected to benefit 309,000 women of childbearing age and over 306,000 children under five. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development. The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development. The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. It also works in partnership with local governments and civil society organizations. / Le projet vise à améliorer les résultats en matière de développment humain en Afrique et en Asie et il est composé de quatre volets: (i) le renforcement des systèmes de santé en Asie centrale pour assurer que les personnes aient accès à de l'information et des soins de santé de qualité fournis par un personnel qualifié et des installations bien équipées, (ii) le renforcement des systèmes d'éducation en Afrique de l'Est pour améliorer la qualité de l'éducation des élèves du préscolaire et du primaire, (iii) l'amélioration de la capacité des organisations de la société civile en Afrique et en Asie à promouvoir l'égalité entre les sexes et à intégrer l'adaptation au changement climatique dans leur programmation tout en développant des moyens novateurs pour aider les personnes à améliorer leurs moyens de subsistance, (iv) la sensibilisation et la mobilisation accrues des Canadiens au développement international. This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture. The project is implemented with local partners in each country: the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania. / Ce projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des populations de 194 villages ruraux au Mozambique, en Tanzanie et au Burundi en augmentant l'accès aux soins de santé primaire et à l'eau potable, en faisant la promotion de saines habitudes de vie et en améliorant le rendement agricole des petits exploitants. Le projet contribue à augmenter le nombre de travailleurs communautaires dans le secteur de la santé, à fournir des vélos-ambulances aux villages éloignés, à construire ou à agrandir des infrastructures de santé de base dans les collectivités qui en ont le plus besoin et à améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable en creusant ou en rénovant des puits. Le projet enseigne également aux femmes, aux hommes et aux enfants les principes de santé sexuelle et génésique, de nutrition et d'hygiène, de santé maternelle et infantile, de prévention du VIH/sida et d'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes. Une formation sur les meilleures pratiques en matière d'agriculture durable est également donnée aux agriculteurs et agricultrices.

Specific activities include: (1) training nurse educators as trainers of community-level health care workers on maternal and newborn care; (2) training traditional birth attendants to identify and refer high-risk pregnancies to clinics; and (3) conducting outreach and education sessions targeting households on pregnancy care, on immediate care of newborns, and on local programs for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. The project is expected to reach around 66,000 mothers and 52,000 infants. The Canada Africa Community Health Alliance is working in partnership with local district councils, district hospitals and women's centres to implement this project. / Le projet vise à réduire les taux de mortalité maternelle et infantile dans le district de Ukerewe en améliorant la qualité des services de santé offerts et en favorisant une augmentation de l'utilisation des services de santé au niveau communautaire. The acute shortage and uneven ...distribution of health workers across sub-Saharan Africa constitutes a severe challenge to providing and managing health care. In Uganda, village health teams (VHT) made up of informally trained volunteers or community health workers deliver preventive and curative health care to rural populations. The spread of affordable mobile devices for VHTs can strengthen the delivery of continuing medical education, enhance clinical decision support, and facilitate the reporting of health indicators. But despite the obvious appetite for such projects, little has been done to map the various mHealth interventions, explore the policy environment or assess changes in VHT behaviour resulting from the interventions. This project will attempt to fill the gap.Using a series of complementary research methods, the research team will conducted a literature review, analyze primary data on VHT behaviour, map the relevant policy issues and actors, and promote dialogue between different mHealth project teams. Field research will include a survey of VHT use of mobile phones for general purposes (making calls, messaging, calendaring, etc.). The dialogue will take place during a stakeholders meeting to share the research findings, and to critique and enrich the design of a research project to facilitate VHT delivery of improved preventive and curative health care (STRETCH-Uganda).

Gulu District is one of the mo...st vulnerable areas of Uganda. It continues to recover from a disruptive 20-year period of violent armed conflict and population displacement. This research project will address critical healthcare issues in Gulu, by identifying best practices in treatment delivery processes given the district s limited human and financial resources.Providing health care in challenging timesThroughout this period of instability and unrest, Lacor Hospital has delivered critical health services to the people of Gulu. Originally founded by Catholic missionaries in 1959, it has since developed into the second largest general hospital in the country. In 1961, internationally acclaimed doctors Piero Corti and Canadian Lucille Teasdale started their life-long association with the hospital. Today, it is a private not-for-profit institution providing treatment and public health outreach services to approximately 250,000 people in the region.The burden of non-communicable diseasesA recent survey revealed a slowly increasing burden of non-communicable diseases alongside persistent diseases such as tuberculosis. Both of these require long-term treatment. The demands and costs associated with treating this disease burden are growing, while donor funding is declining. There is an urgent need to strengthen hospital administration and management to deal with inefficiencies in the treatment delivery system. How the project will make a differenceThe Teasdale-Corti Foundation, established to continue support to Lacor Hospital, will be funded to send a team of operational research experts to study the problem. The team will propose strategies to better inform treatment delivery planning within the hospital. They will:-review the hospital s current processes;-develop decision support tools for the hospital to better manage these processes;-identify the most critical inefficiencies in delivering tuberculosis treatment and other healthcare services;-propose strategies and tools to fix system inefficiencies and improve planning of treatment phases, delivery logistics, and patient follow-up in both hospital and patient community settings; and-strengthen the hospital s decision-making around healthcare delivery planning.

This project aims to improve t...he health and survival rates of pregnant women, newborns, and young children living in the Bushenyi and Rubirizi districts in southwest Uganda. It focuses on strengthening district health systems, improving health centres' delivery of services, community programming, and sharing project results and lessons learned. The project is designed to improve access for approximately 340,000 people, including 40,000 pregnant women and over 74,000 children under five to basic health services at more than 30 health centres, and train over 180 health centre staff and over 4,200 community health workers in preventive and critical care. Activities include: upgrading health centres' equipment; training community and health centre workers; encouraging early treatment for acute illness; and analyzing the project's results and sharing the Bushenyi model through the media and meetings with government planners. The University of Calgary is working in partnership with the Mbarara University of Science and Technology and the Bushenyi district local government to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. The maximum CIDA contribution to this project includes $10,000 for monitoring purposes. / Ce projet améliore la santé et les taux de survie des femmes enceintes, des nouveau-nés et des jeunes enfants qui vivent dans les districts de Bushenyi et Rubirizi dans le Sud-ouest de l'Ouganda. Il renforce les systèmes de santé au sein des districts, améliore la provision de services de santé et de programmation communautaire en matière de santé par ces centres, et partage les résultats et les leçons retenues du projet. The project aims to improve ma...ternal and child health in the Kayonza, Mpungu and Kanyantorogo subcounties. Buy-A-Net Malaria Prevention Group has partnered with Bwindi Community Hospital to reach an estimated 55,000 people living in remote villages, with an emphasis on children under age five and women of childbearing age. The hospital team trains village health providers and community leaders to mobilize the community, monitor children and expectant mothers, and serve as points of referral to the hospital. The team distributes insecticide-treated mosquito nets and oral rehydration salts for treatment of diarrhea, and educates community members about preventing and treating common maternal and childhood illness through school visits, radio broadcasts and information sessions. / L'objectif du projet est d'améliorer la santé des mères et des enfants dans les sous-comtés de Kayonza, Mpungu et Kanyantorogo. Le groupe de prévention du paludisme Buy-A-Net, en partenariat avec l'Hôpital communautaire Bwindi, atteint environ 55 000 personnes vivant dans des villages éloignés, et appuie particulièrement les enfants de moins de cinq ans et les femmes en âge de procréer. L'équipe de l'hôpital offre une formation aux fournisseurs de soins et aux chefs communautaires des villages, pour mobiliser la communauté, faire le suivi auprès des enfants et des mères enceintes, et servir de point de contact pour l'hôpital. L'équipe distribue des moustiquaires traités avec un insecticide et des sels de réhydratation pour traiter la diarrhée. Reaching over 1.85 million people, including families and community health workers, the project uses a community-based approach and works to improve the quality of community outreach and MNCH services while encouraging health-seeking behaviours, and improved health care management. Activities include: training government health workers on basic obstetric and neonatal care, safe deliveries, and management of childhood illnesses; training health facility managers to strengthen quality control; equipping 63 health facilities and 30 maternity wards; conducting home visits for postnatal care; and helping communities address traditional cultural views impeding the use of health services. Plan Canada is working with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, UNICEF and ministries of health, to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. / Ce projet améliore la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants des populations négligées dans 26 districts et sous-districts du Ghana, du Mali, d'Éthiopie, du Bangladesh et du Zimbabwe. Plan Canada is working with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, UNICEF and ministries of health, to implement this project. This project aims to improve m...aternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) in underserved populations of 26 districts and sub-districts of Ghana, Mali, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. This project focuses on a numb...er of urgent public health problems in Afghanistan and contributes to addressing the underlying and immediate causes of maternal and child death. The objective is to improve the health of women, newborns, and children under five in select areas of Bamyan and Badakhshan provinces in Afghanistan.The project encompasses four main components: (1) enhancing access to maternal, newborn, and child health services by improving health facilities; (2) improving the quality of health services provided by strengthening the skills of health workers (midwives, nurses, managers) and by strengthening the educational programs at selected professional development institutions; (3) enhancing the participation of communities in decision-making processes within the health sector, including the management and distribution of health services, holding the government to account, and raising awareness of better health practices; and (4) improving the health and nutrition practices of women, men, and children under five in selected areas in Badakhshan.Project activities include infrastructure work, including the construction of the new Bamyan Provincial Hospital, and the provision of maternal, newborn and child health equipment to health facilities. The project also involves training new nurses, community health nurses, and midwives and strengthening national and provincial training institutes. On the nutrition front, the project includes stocking health facilities with nutritious food, training facility staff in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition, and supporting micronutrient suppliers. At the community level, the project provides training for men, women, and children under five in hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation, in addition to undertaking community awareness activities. It also supports the production of nutritious food and helps communities to implement water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. In addition, technical assistance is provided through the project to Afghan Ministry of Public Health personnel, on topics relating to maternal, newborn, and child health./ Ce projet met l'accent sur un certain nombre de problèmes urgents de santé publique en Afghanistan et contribue à lutter contre les causes sous-jacentes et immédiates de la mortalité maternelle et infantile. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH.Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems.The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results./ Ce projet vise à appuyer le Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM), une plateforme de financement multidonateurs qui fournit des fonds durables gérés par le pays pour mettre fin aux décès évitables de mères, de nouveau-nés et d'enfants. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH.Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems.The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities.
