This project is a continuation... of Canada's support towards multi-donor budget support (MDBS). As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Ghana to promote effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increase donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthen mutual accountability. Budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among donors, government, and partners, which helps to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, and long-term development results. This project is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors. Sustaining Growth and Development in Ghana (SGDG) contributes to the sustainable growth of public revenues as Ghana solidifies its status as a middle-income country. As a contribution to the national budget, the initiative supports the Ministry of Finance and the national government in the delivery of services to Ghana's 25 million citizens. Project activities include: (1) strengthening of the Government's macroeconomic planning and fiscal management capacity; (2) strengthening technical and management expertise to improve national planning for poverty reduction and delivery of basic services; and (3) improving budget credibility and public financial management systems. By improving public financial governance and contributing to a stable macroeconomic environment, this project improves the confidence of the private sector to invest in Ghana and reduce barriers to private sector development. / Par ce projet, le Canada continue d'appuyer un soutien budgétaire multidonateurs. This project aims to improve m...aternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) in underserved populations of 26 districts and sub-districts of Ghana, Mali, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Reaching over 1.85 million people, including families and community health workers, the project uses a community-based approach and works to improve the quality of community outreach and MNCH services while encouraging health-seeking behaviours, and improved health care management. Activities include: training government health workers on basic obstetric and neonatal care, safe deliveries, and management of childhood illnesses; training health facility managers to strengthen quality control; equipping 63 health facilities and 30 maternity wards; conducting home visits for postnatal care; and helping communities address traditional cultural views impeding the use of health services. Plan Canada is working with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, UNICEF and ministries of health, to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. / Ce projet améliore la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants des populations négligées dans 26 districts et sous-districts du Ghana, du Mali, d'Éthiopie, du Bangladesh et du Zimbabwe. Rejoignant plus de 1,85 millions de personnes, y compris des familles et des travailleurs en santé communautaire, le projet utilise une approche communautaire et travaille à améliorer la qualité de sensibilisation communautaire et des services de santé maternelle, tout en encourageant des comportements qui recherchent des soins de santé et une gestion des soins de santé améliorée. Les activités comprennent la formation de travailleurs de la santé du gouvernement sur les soins obstétriques et néonatals, des accouchements sécuritaires, et la gestion de maladies infantiles. This project aims to improve m...aternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) in underserved populations of 26 districts and sub-districts of Ghana, Mali, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Reaching over 1.85 million people, including families and community health workers, the project uses a community-based approach and works to improve the quality of community outreach and MNCH services while encouraging health-seeking behaviours, and improved health care management. Activities include: training government health workers on basic obstetric and neonatal care, safe deliveries, and management of childhood illnesses; training health facility managers to strengthen quality control; equipping 63 health facilities and 30 maternity wards; conducting home visits for postnatal care; and helping communities address traditional cultural views impeding the use of health services. Plan Canada is working with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, UNICEF and ministries of health, to implement this project. The project helped to make hea...lth and education services more available, improve access to services, and improve the quality of services offered to communities. Activities in the health sector aimed to help mainly women and children. They included reproductive care, improving nutrition, combating micronutrient deficiencies, and preventing the spread of AIDS and tuberculosis. In education, the fund supported basic education initiatives, teacher training, the provision of educational material, functional adult literacy, and technical and vocational training. After the earthquake on January 12, 2010, six local funds in Haiti, including this one, were realigned to support rapid recovery projects that respond to the immediate needs of Haitians affected by the earthquake in the communes of Léogâne and Jacmel, displaced persons and host communities in the Central and Artibonite departments, and relief support for initiatives in Port-au-Prince. Projects focused on children and youth, food security, and economic growth, in line with priorities set out in the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti, and were implemented by locally-based Haitian organizations. / Le projet contribuait à augmenter l offre des services en santé et en éducation, à améliorer l accès à ces services et à en augmenter la qualité auprès des populations desservies. Les interventions dans le domaine de la santé visaient en priorité les enfants et les femmes. Elles touchaient la prestation de soins génésiques, l amélioration de la nutrition, la lutte contre les carences en micronutriments et la prévention de la propagation du sida et de la tuberculose. Dans le domaine de l éducation, le fonds finançait des projets d éducation de base, de formation des enseignants, de fourniture de matériel didactique, d alphabétisation fonctionnelle des adultes et de formation professionnelle et technique. Suite au séisme du 12 janvier 2010, six fonds locaux en Haïti, dont celui-ci, ont été réorientés afin d appuyer des projets de relèvement rapide qui répondent aux besoins immédiats des Haïtiens touchés par le séisme dans les communes de Léogâne et de Jacmel et des populations déplacées et des collectivités d accueil dans les départements du Centre et d Artibonite et qui s adressent au relèvement d initiatives à Port-au-Prince. The purpose of the Health and ...Education Fund - Phase II (FSE II) was to improve the quality, accessibility, and governance of basic education and primary health care services for poor communities. The health management capacity... building support project (PARC) aims to improve the governance of Haiti's health system by helping: (i) to develop and implement human resources development policies and strategies in the health sector and (ii) to strengthen health management training systems. The PARC project addresses major weaknesses in Haiti's health system, such as the lack of qualified staff and the lack of adequate systems to manage human resources. Project activities focus on policies and strategies to decentralize human resources and improve management capacities at the central, departmental, and community levels. / Le projet d'appui au renforcement des capacités en gestion de la santé (PARC) vise à améliorer la gouvernance du système de santé en Haiti en appuyant : (i) l'élaboration et la mise en oeuvre de politiques et stratégies en matière de développement des ressources humaines dans le secteur sanitaire et (ii) le renforcement des systèmes de formation en gestion de la santé. Le projet PARC constitue une réponse directe à des handicaps majeurs du système de santé haitien, notamment le manque de ressources humaines qualifiées et l'inexistence de systèmes de gestion adaptés en matière de ressources humaines. It supports the rehabilitation of nine maternity clinics and seven community health centres and includes repairing infrastructure, installing equipment, and providing staff training. Five of the maternity clinics offer basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care. The other four offer a higher level of care, including caesarean sections and blood transfusions. The community clinics offer basic services for children under five years of age in remote rural areas, including routine vaccinations, vitamin A distribution, growth monitoring, oral rehydration therapy, and deworming. The project supports 40 water and sanitation initiatives that aim to prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera and improve coordination and referrals between community and province-wide service providers. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. This project has two components. This project aims to reduce de...ath and illness among mothers, newborns and children under the age of five in the surrounding communities of Grand Rivière du Nord and Bahon, in northern Haiti. The project is designed to: (i) improve the ability of health care systems, including community-based health systems, to deliver quality health care that meets the needs of people; (ii) prevent and treat malnutrition among children and mothers; and (iii) improve access to basic primary health care services to reduce the number of women and children dying of common diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS. Some project activities include: providing approximately 20 mobile clinics; training approximately 30 community health care workers and community groups; conducting vaccination and de-worming campaigns for children; purchasing equipment and medicine for community health care facilities; training traditional birth attendants; and constructing latrines. Approximately 12,000 families are expected to benefit from this project including over 1,600 pregnant and lactating women. International Needs Canada is working with International Child Care Haiti to implement this project. This project is part of Canada s Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. The maximum contribution allocated to this project includes $10,000 for monitoring purposes. / Ce projet vise à réduire les décès et les maladies chez les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans des collectivités environnantes de Grand Rivière du Nord et de Bahon, dans le Nord d Haïti. The project will provide essential capacity building and enhanced technical inputs from the World Health Organization (WHO) in support of the long-expressed aim of these two governments to reduce existing inequities with respect to the allocation of and access to resources for health.

The private sector is the larg...est health provider in India, and unregulated private healthcare is resulting in inequitable access to services and irrational or misguided use of healthcare resources. The first phase of the project (103234) highlighted these issues and brought together health researchers, activists and experts to give them more prominence. This project will combine research on specific aspects of heathcare access (including misguided forms of women's health services promoted by private practitioners) with policy research, and propose a system to address the problem. Researchers will draw up a roadmap and possible models for a system universal health care for Maharashtra state, and contribute to similar discourse at the national level. The project will also include a fellowship program to build the capacity of young healthcare professionals in the field of equity and rights. This is expected to result in pool of health professionals with the skills to advocate for and contribute to the movement for universal access to health care.

In 2007, out-of-pocket expendi...tures accounted for 90% of total private expenditure on healthcare in India. The cost of coping with serious disease can be ruinous for families living below the poverty line. The Rajiv Aarogyasri Health Insurance Scheme was established in Andrha Pradesh to mitigate catastrophic healthcare expenses for enrolled families, and to ensure that the target population has access to quality health services for serious illnesses.Aarogyasri currently covers more than 80% of the population of Andrha Pradesh. As one of the first schemes of its kind at this scale, Aarogyasri has generated national and international interest. A detailed evaluation is critical not only to keep improving the scheme, but also to ensure that the lessons learned from it benefit other states and countries. The Aarogyasri Trust Board has therefore asked a consortium of institutions to evaluate the scheme and consider its potential role in prevention and primary healthcare. This project is a response to that request. The evaluation will also establish a baseline for future evaluations, identify areas for further research, and build capacity for research, evaluation and evidence-based policymaking in India.

This project improves the heal...th of mothers and children in the Pakur district of Jharkhand state in India by improving access to and use of maternal, newborn and child health services. Working with local and state governments, the project is designed to enhance services delivered by the Health and Family Welfare Department and the Ministry of Women and Child Development. Project activities include: (i) training community health workers and families in antenatal, postnatal and newborn care, nutrition, and safe pregnancy and delivery practices; (ii) promoting immunization and raising awareness of how to prevent and treat malaria, respiratory infections, and diarrhea; and (iii) promoting shared decision-making on maternal, newborn and child health at the household level. The project expects to reach over 1,100 health workers and 600 village health and sanitation committees, as well as over 280,000 women of reproductive age and their husbands and more than 56,000 pregnant women. HealthBridge Foundation of Canada is working in partnership with the Evangelical Fellowship of India Commission on Relief to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. The maximum CIDA contribution to this project includes $10,000 for monitoring purposes. / Ce projet améliore la santé des mères et des enfants du district du Pakur dans l'état indien du Jharkhand en améliorant l'accès et le recours aux services de santé pour les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants. Mis en oeuvre en collaboration avec le gouvernement de l'état et le gouvernement local, le projet est conçu pour améliorer les services du Ministère de la santé et du bien-être des familles, et du Ministère du développement des femmes et des enfants. This project, implemented by W...omen s Empowerment International Foundation with its Indian partner, aims to provide basic education, vocational training and basic health services to children of both sexes and their families in the state of Maharashtra in India. In particular, the project delivers: teacher training, building and furnishing of two student hostels for each sex, training of 30 village youth of both sexes in early childhood education and primary health care, training and equipping of tribal youth of both sexes and their families for dairy, apiary and garment making small businesses; and the installation of 12 bore wells. Over 500 children and youth benefit directly from this project and the bore wells benefit over 1870 people / Ce projet mis en oeuvre par la «Fondation Women s Empowerment International» avec son partenaire indien, vise à fournir une éducation de base, la formation professionnelle et des services de santé de base aux enfants des deux sexes et de leurs familles dans l État du Maharashtra en Inde. En particulier, le projet livre: la formation des enseignants, la construction et l ameublement de deux foyers d étudiants pour chaque sexe, la formation de 30 jeunes du village des deux sexes en éducation de la petite enfance et les soins de santé primaires, la formation et l équipement des jeunes autochtones des deux sexes et leurs familles en matière de gestion des petites entreprises (produits laitiers, apiculture et la couture et l installation de 12 puits forés Plus de 500 enfants et jeunes bénéficieront directement de ce projet et les puits forés bénéficieront à plus de 1870 personnes.

This project aims to contribut...e to a reduction in maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality by using an integrated approach to address the health service and nutritional needs of vulnerable populations in Taita Taveta County in Eastern Kenya. Reaching 3,000 pregnant women and their families, the project is focused on improving pregnant women' critical nutrition status; improving the quality of health services for pregnant women and infants; and transferring knowledge on program design and implementation. Activities include: local consultations to determine critical nutrition and maternal, newborn and child health needs; community education and mobilization activities; training health care providers; and providing a critical nutrition package for women of reproductive age, pregnant and post-partum women and infants. The University of Manitoba is working in partnership with Pwani Christian Community Services and the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) of Kenya to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. The maximum CIDA contribution to this project includes $10,000 for monitoring purposes. / Ce projet contribue à la réduction du taux de mortalité des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants en utilisant une approche intégrée pour répondre aux besoins en services de santé et de nutrition des populations vulnérables du comté oriental Taita Taveta au Kenya. Le projet atteint 3 000 femmes enceintes et leurs familles en se concentrant sur l'amélioration de l'état alimentaire critique pour les femmes enceintes, et l'amélioration de services de qualité pour les femmes enceintes et les nouveau-nés, ainsi que le transfert de connaissances en matière de conception et de mise en oeuvre de programmes. The project expects to reach 66,000 beneficiaries, including 12,000 children under five years old and 26,000 women of childbearing age in West Pokot District in Kenya and Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Gedeh Counties in Liberia. Ministry of Health-supervised community health workers and volunteers are selected by Community Health Committees and trained in community based health and first aid, in order to treat and refer sick children, and ensure community-level access to life-saving medications and basic health services. / Ce projet vise à sauver la vie des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants au Kenya et au Libéria. La Société canadienne de la Croix-Rouge et ses partenaires au Kenya et au Libéria collaborent avec les ministères de la Santé de ces pays pour mettre en oeuvre un programme de prise en charge intégrée des cas dans la communauté (PEC-C), une approche visant à améliorer la santé des femmes enceintes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans 44 collectivités rurales difficiles d'accès. The project expects to reach 66,000 beneficiaries, including 12,000 children under five years old and 26,000 women of childbearing age in West Pokot District in Kenya and Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Gedeh Counties in Liberia. Ministry of Health-supervised community health workers and volunteers are selected by Community Health Committees and trained in community based health and first aid, in order to treat and refer sick children, and ensure community-level access to life-saving medications and basic health services. / Ce projet vise à sauver la vie des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants au Kenya et au Libéria. La Société canadienne de la Croix-Rouge et ses partenaires au Kenya et au Libéria collaborent avec les ministères de la Santé de ces pays pour mettre en oeuvre un programme de prise en charge intégrée des cas dans la communauté (PEC-C), une approche visant à améliorer la santé des femmes enceintes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans 44 collectivités rurales difficiles d'accès. Il est attendu que le projet rejoigne 66 000 personnes, dont 12 000 enfants de moins de cinq ans et 26 000 femmes en âge de procréer, dans le district de West Pokot au Kenya, et dans les comtés de Bomi, de Gbarpolu et de Grand Gedeh au Libéria. Ministry of Health-supervised community health workers and volunteers are selected by Community Health Committees and trained in community based health and first aid, in order to treat and refer sick children, and ensure community-level access to life-saving medications and basic health services. / Ce projet vise à sauver la vie des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants au Kenya et au Libéria. La Société canadienne de la Croix-Rouge et ses partenaires au Kenya et au Libéria collaborent avec les ministères de la Santé de ces pays pour mettre en oeuvre un programme de prise en charge intégrée des cas dans la communauté (PEC-C), une approche visant à améliorer la santé des femmes enceintes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans 44 collectivités rurales difficiles d accès. Il est attendu que le projet rejoigne 66 000 personnes, dont 12 000 enfants de moins de cinq ans et 26 000 femmes en âge de procréer, dans le district de West Pokot au Kenya, et dans les comtés de Bomi, de Gbarpolu et de Grand Gedeh au Libéria. Des bénévoles et travailleurs de la santé communautaire supervisés par le ministère de la Santé sont sélectionnés par les comités de santé communautaire et formés aux soins de santé communautaire de base et aux premiers soins. Ces derniers peuvent ainsi traiter les enfants malades ou les diriger vers d autres centres de soins et garantir l accès des collectivités à des médicaments essentiels et à des services de soins de santé de base.

This project seeks to save the... lives of women, newborns and children in Kenya and Liberia. The Canadian Red Cross Society and its partners in Kenya and Liberia work with the Ministries of Health in those countries to deliver a program in Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM), an approach to improve the health of pregnant women, newborns and children in 44 hard-to access rural communities. The project expects to reach 66,000 beneficiaries, including 12,000 children under five years old and 26,000 women of childbearing age in West Pokot District in Kenya and Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Gedeh Counties in Liberia. This project aims to improve t...he health of the most marginalized mothers and children in the Dimla sub-district of Nilphamari district, Bangladesh, and in the Lilongwe and Ntchisi districts of Malawi. The project is designed to improve partnerships between communities and health facilities, train community volunteer health workers, and use community education to promote household behaviours that improve the health of mothers and children. Using an integrated model for managing childhood illness, the project supports community health volunteers in providing malaria prevention and nutrition education at the household level and linking communities with maternal and child health services. The project reaches 200 community health volunteers, traditional birth attendants and informal health service providers, as well as 150,000 mothers and their children. World Renew is working in partnership with Scheme for Under-Privileged People to Organize Themselves (Bangladesh) and the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian, Nkhoma Relief and Development (Malawi) to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn and child health commitment. / Ce projet améliore la santé des mères et des enfants les plus marginalisés du sous-district de Dimla dans le district de Nilphamari au Bangladesh, et des districts de Lilongwe et de Ntchisi au Malawi. Le projet améliore les partenariats entre les collectivités et les établissements de santé, forme les travailleurs de la santé communautaire bénévoles et favorise les comportements qui améliorent la santé des mères et des enfants au sein des familles par l'entremise de l'éducation communautaire. En utilisant un modèle intégré pour la gestion des maladies infantiles, le projet soutient les travailleurs de la santé communautaire bénévoles à éduquer les familles en matière de nutrition et de prévention du paludisme, et à faire la liaison entre les collectivités et les services de santé pour les mères et les enfants. Ce projet touche 200 bénévoles de la santé communautaire, sages-femmes et fournisseurs informels de soins de santé, ainsi que 150 000 mères et leurs enfants.
