The project seeks to improve m...onitoring and control of public spending, to give citizens greater access to their government's financial information, to improve transparency in natural resources management and to build the Government's capacity to combat corruption. This project provides budget support and technical assistance to the Government of Senegal in implementing its national development strategy. As with all budget support initiatives, Canada works in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Senegal to promote the transparency and effectiveness of national systems and to strengthen mutual accountability. This type of support also favours greater policy dialogue among donors, the Government and partners. This helps to strengthen efforts to obtain focused and effective aid, as well as long-term development results. This initiative is monitored and evaluated on an ongoing basis with other donors. / Le projet cherche à améliorer le suivi et le contrôle des dépenses publiques, à accroitre l'accès des citoyens et citoyennes aux renseignements financiers de leur gouvernement, à améliorer la transparence de la gestion des ressources naturelles et à renforcer la capacité du gouvernement de lutter contre la corruption. Ce projet accorde un appui budgétaire et une assistance technique au gouvernement du Sénégal pour la mise en oeuvre de sa Stratégie de développement national. The project supports adolescen...ts, particularly girls aged 13-18, in 71 communities in Nigeria and Senegal where teenagers are exposed to high levels of risk to their health. The project is designed to increase healthy behaviours among adolescents to reduce the risks of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and early/unwanted pregnancies. The project also seeks to better protect adolescents, especially girls, from violence and sexual abuse and improve literacy and vocational skills among participating adolescents. World Renew is working in partnership with Evangelical Lutheran Church of Senegal (EELS) and Evangelical Health Coordination Committee (CECS) in Senegal and Beacon of Hope Initiative (BHI) in Nigeria. / Le projet soutient des adolescents, en particulier des filles de 13 à 18 ans, dans 71 communautés au Nigéria et au Sénégal, où les adolescents sont exposés à de très hauts niveaux de risques pour leur santé. Le projet est conçu pour renforcer les comportements qui réduisent les risques de transmission du VIH/SIDA, de maladies transmises sexuellement et qui réduisent les risques de grossesses précoces ou non-souhaitées parmi les adolescents. Il vise également à améliorer la protection des adolescents, spécialement les filles, contre la violence et l'abus sexuel, et à améliorer le niveau d'alphabétisation et les compétences professionnelles parmi les participants adolescents. World Renew travaille en partenariat avec l'Église Évangélique Luthérienne du Sénégal (EELS) et le Comité Evangélique de Coordination pour la Santé (CECS) au Sénégal, et l'initiative Beacon of Hope Initiative (BHI) au Nigéria.

Improving primary health care ...for everyone requires an effort that extends beyond the formal health sector. This project will examine the value of intersectoral collaborations at the primary healthcare level to generate practical guidance and a theoretical understanding of how these arrangements can influence health equity in Argentina and Latin America. Intersectoral efforts in the healthcare industry are projects and programs involving multiple sectors working together to improve health and well-being. This requires collaboration and coordination between the formal health sector and other sectors such as social welfare, education, environment, transportation, justice, sanitation, and industry. The World Health Organization, regional bodies, and national and subnational health authorities are increasingly promoting intersectoral approaches that examine the range of social determinants of health that influence access to primary health care. The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, live, work, and age. The distribution of money, power, and resources shape these determinants. While researchers have explored the benefits of intersectoral collaborations in health, there is limited practical guidance on how to establish and evaluate these activities. More evidence is needed to understand how these collaborations influence health equity. In the Santa Fe province of Argentina, the Ministry of Health has identified intersectoral collaboration as a priority. Santa Fe primary care health workers and managers are creating grassroots linkages with other sectors to facilitate their work. This convergence of political and operational interest in intersectoral partnerships at the provincial and municipal levels is critical to this project. The project team is composed of researchers and decision-makers. They will collect primary and secondary data using literature reviews, existing population health databases, and key informant interviews. Research outputs will include scientific papers and policy briefs describing achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. The team will build a virtual Latin American community of practice focused on intersectoral collaborations for health. Findings will be integrated into course curricula for a master's in health systems and services management and a certificate in intersectoral primary health care management offered by Rosario University. This research is expected to expand the knowledge base of proven practices to advance greater intersectoral collaboration in Santa Fe province and other parts of the region.

The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development. The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia. It also works in partnership with local governments and civil society organizations. / Le projet vise à améliorer les résultats en matière de développment humain en Afrique et en Asie et il est composé de quatre volets: (i) le renforcement des systèmes de santé en Asie centrale pour assurer que les personnes aient accès à de l'information et des soins de santé de qualité fournis par un personnel qualifié et des installations bien équipées, (ii) le renforcement des systèmes d'éducation en Afrique de l'Est pour améliorer la qualité de l'éducation des élèves du préscolaire et du primaire, (iii) l'amélioration de la capacité des organisations de la société civile en Afrique et en Asie à promouvoir l'égalité entre les sexes et à intégrer l'adaptation au changement climatique dans leur programmation tout en développant des moyens novateurs pour aider les personnes à améliorer leurs moyens de subsistance, (iv) la sensibilisation et la mobilisation accrues des Canadiens au développement international. The Strengthening Traditional ...Health Systems project allows the World Health Organization s (WHO) Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) to implement its regional strategy for promoting the integration of traditional medicine in African health systems. Activities take place in all sub-Saharan countries, except Sudan and Djibouti, which are not members of AFRO. The project supports AFRO s work in promoting the use of traditional medicine, and its incorporation within African health systems. It advocates for the adoption of supportive national policy and regulatory frameworks, and supports networking and the sharing of experiences from country to country. It also supports research on the safety and effectiveness of traditional medicine that could prove useful in controlling malaria and other diseases. / Le projet de Renforcement des systèmes de santé traditionnelle permet au Bureau régional pour l Afrique (AFRO) de l Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) de faciliter la mise en oeuvre de sa stratégie régionale de promotion du rôle de la médecine traditionnelle dans les systèmes africains de santé. This project aims to increase ...the survival of mothers, newborns and children by bringing life-saving health services directly to 350,000 people in 609 remote communities in Warrap State. These services are brought to communities using community volunteers, and more complicated cases referred to the nearest primary health care centres.Some project activities include: (i) staffing and equipping four mobile outreach clinics; (ii) training 1,511 community health volunteers in health promotion (breastfeeding, better nutrition, vaccinations, etc.); (iii) providing micronutrients to improve nutrition; (iv) delivering life-saving interventions for malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia to children under five, including distributing 116,000 insecticide-treated anti-malaria bed nets; (v) reducing the incidence of water-borne diseases by building and managing 170 safe drinking water-points and 5,000 household latrines, and; (vi) capacity building of the Warrap Ministry of Health and training of the South Sudan Red Cross to train and supervise volunteers and collaborate with the Ministry of Health.This project contributes to Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment./ Ce projet a pour objet d'améliorer la survie des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants en offrant des services de santé essentiels directement à 350 000 personnes dans 609 collectivités éloignées de l'État de Warrap. This project aims to improve t...he health of 82,020 mothers, newborns, children and their family members in the Jonglei and Upper Nile States in South Sudan, a country where maternal and child mortality rates are among the highest in the world. Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) services in South Sudan are either weak or completely lacking, and this is compounded by inadequate nutrition and sanitation (safe disposal of wastewater), and a lack of preventative health care practices. This project integrates agricultural, nutritional and clinical activities to: (1) improve the nutrition of mothers and children by increasing food security, or access to safe, sufficient and nutritious foods, and nutritional supplements; (2) increase women's access to reproductive health services by setting up new and strengthening existing local health clinics; and (3) implement initiatives that aim to prevent and cure the main diseases and infections threatening mothers and children. The project also aims to improve the ability of local actors to undertake integrated agricultural, nutritional and clinical activities. Some project activities include: (1) increasing access to diverse foods, improving agricultural production at the household level, and improving access to nutritious food for infants, children, and pregnant and lactating mothers; (2) increasing access to MNCH services, and increasing the ability of local actors to participate in MNCH initiatives; and (3) increasing access to services that reduce the incidence of malaria, anemia, acute respiratory infections, intestinal parasitic infections and diarrhea, and increasing the ability of women, men and children to adopt behaviour that reduces the transmission and incidence of these diseases. The local implementing partner organization is Christian Mission Aid (CMA). / Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé de 82 020 mères, nouveau-nés, enfants et membres de la famille de l'État du Nil supérieur dans la région de Jonglei, un pays où les taux de mortalité maternelle et infantile sont les plus élevés dans le monde. The Plantation Communities pro...ject (PCP) was launched in 2000. PCP was designed to enhance the socio-economic conditions of the people living and working in and around the tea plantation sector. It has made substantive progress towards empowering communities by strengthening their capacity to influence the decisions that affect them; enhancing the communities awareness of their rights and responsibilities: facilitating improved interrelations between estate residents and employers, and with neighbouring village communities; and providing economic opportunities for residents who are not plantation workers. This second phase (PCP II) continues to pursue the objectives of the first phase (PCP I) by focusing on the following areas: worker welfare and rights, strengthening key organizations; building the skills and knowledge of individuals; and improving livelihoods. Building on the accomplishments of PCP I, PCP II replicates the project in a much larger number of plantations. At the same time, it continues to engage PCP I participants and encourages networking between plantation communities, owners, managers, and stakeholders involved in both phases. / Ce projet, lancé en 2000, vise à améliorer les conditions socio-économiques des personnes qui travaillent dans les plantations de thé et vivent sur le domaine ou dans les environs. Le projet a permis la réalisation d importants progrès en vue d autonomiser les communautés : renforcement de leur capacité d influencer les décisions qui les touchent; plus grande sensibilisation à l égard de leurs droits et de leurs responsabilités; amélioration des relations entre les résidants du domaine et les employeurs, ainsi qu avec les communautés villageoises environnantes; possibilités économiques pour les résidants qui ne travaillent pas dans les plantations. La deuxième phase poursuit les objectifs de la phase I en se concentrant sur les secteurs suivants : les droits et le bien-être des travailleurs; la consolidation des principales organisations; le renforcement des compétences et des connaissances; l amélioration des moyens de subsistance. En s appuyant sur les réalisations obtenues pendant la phase I, la deuxième phase permettra de reproduire le projet dans un plus grand nombre de plantations, tout en continuant de mettre à contribution les participants à la phase I. Elle favorise également l établissement d un réseau d entraide entre les communautés, les propriétaires et gérants de plantation et les intervenants dans ce secteur qui participent aux deux phases.

This project aims to enhance g...rowth and reduce poverty, improve quality of life and social well-being, and improve governance and accountability in Tanzania, for the benefit of all Tanzanians by supporting the implementation of the Government of Tanzania's National Strategy for Growth and the Reduction of Poverty. Project activities focus on: (i) increasing agricultural production, building roads, expanding the capacity of the major port and railways, and broadening the reach of the electrical grid; (ii) training and deploying more qualified teachers and health workers along with the supplies needed to do their jobs; and (iii) broadening the tax base and improving citizens' access to information such as budget documents. As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to strengthen its aid effectiveness, by focussing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthening mutual accountability. Budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among DFATD, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. HSSPIII emphasizes the delivery of essential health services at the district level; reforming and strengthening regional and national referral hospitals; improving central support systems (including infrastructure, health management information systems, drug supplies, transport, and communications and information technology); dealing more effectively with issues in human resources for health; improving the level, appropriateness and sustainability of health care financing; promoting public private partnership; implementing the national strategy for combating HIV/AIDS; and improving government and development partner relations to improve harmonization and alignment of external and Tanzanian resources in a more effective partnership. The implementation of HSSPIII is improving the management and delivery of primary health care services such as the prevention and treatment of common illnesses to improve child survival and maternal health. Canada is one of several donors supporting the Government of Tanzania s basket/pooled fund for the health sector to improve service delivery and strengthen the health system overall. This project builds upon Canad...a's existing support to the Government of Tanzania's Health Basket/Pool Fund. This project provides additional funding to accelerate efforts to improve maternal, newborn and child health in Tanzania. It is supporting the achievement of results of the Government of Tanzania's third Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSPIII). HSSPIII emphasizes the delivery of essential health services at the district level; reforming and strengthening regional and national referral hospitals; improving central support systems (including infrastructure, health management information systems, drug supplies, transport, and communications and information technology); dealing more effectively with issues in human resources for health; improving the level, appropriateness and sustainability of health care financing; promoting public private partnership; implementing the national strategy for combating HIV/AIDS; and improving government and development partner relations to improve harmonization and alignment of external and Tanzanian resources in a more effective partnership. The implementation of HSSPIII is improving the management and delivery of primary health care services such as the prevention and treatment of common illnesses to improve child survival and maternal health. Canada is one of several donors supporting the Government of Tanzania's basket/pooled fund for the health sector to improve service delivery and strengthen the health system overall. Since 2006, Canada has been working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to focus on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increase donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthen mutual accountability. This support also fosters greater policy dialogue among donors, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. This project is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors. The project supports the imple...mentation of the Strategic Plan of Comprehensive Community-Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT), a Tanzanian non-governmental organization and one of the only providers of health services to disabled Tanzanians. Some of the major activities of the Strategic Plan are: provision of quality preventive, curative and rehabilitative services to people living with disabilities, particularly children and women in underserved areas; human resources and capacity development; outreach, advocacy and awareness-raising on disability issues; and ensuring that adequate infrastructure and medical equipment are available to vulnerable groups. Through this project and the work of CCBRT, disabled and vulnerable Tanzanians, including women and children in particular, are expected to see improved quality gender-sensitive preventive, curative and rehabilitative services. / Le projet appuie la mise en oeuvre du Plan stratégique d'une organisation non gouvernementale en Tanzanie qui est l'un des seuls fournisseurs de services en santé pour les personnes handicapées en Tanzanie, Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT). Les activités principales du Plan stratégique comprennent : la livraison de services de qualité en santé préventive, curative et réadaptive aux personnes handicapées, plus particulièrement aux enfants et femmes vivant dans des régions défavorisées en matière de services; le développement des ressources humaines et des capacités; la diffusion d'information; la défense des droits et la sensibilisation sur les questions relatives aux handicaps; assurer une infrastructure et des équipements médicaux adéquats et disponibles pour les groupes vulnérables.
