This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH.Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems.The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results./ Ce projet vise à appuyer le Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM), une plateforme de financement multidonateurs qui fournit des fonds durables gérés par le pays pour mettre fin aux décès évitables de mères, de nouveau-nés et d'enfants. This project aims to fill crit...ical financing gaps to improve reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) in high-burden countries by accelerating investments in health systems. The Health Systems Bond is issued by the World Bank and available for purchase by private investors. Capital generated from the proceeds is channeled as loans to countries eligible for funding from the Global Financing Facility (GFF) in support of Every Woman Every Child. DFATD's contribution helps lower the borrowing costs for GFF countries who wish to access the funds raised by the bonds in the form of performance-based financing. Project activities include: (1) training community health workers; and (2) improving health data systems; and (3) increasing investments in health by improving outreach to private sector. Strengthening health systems is an important part of Canada's efforts to improve RMNCH as strong systems are central to the delivery of quality essential services for women and children. / Ce projet vise à combler des lacunes cruciales sur le plan financier afin d'améliorer la santé génésique, maternelle, néonatale et infantile dans les pays lourdement touchés en accélérant les investissements dans les systèmes de santé. Les obligations pour les systèmes de santé, émises par la Banque mondiale, peuvent être achetées par des investisseurs privés. Le capital généré par les recettes est transformé en prêts aux pays admissibles à un financement du Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM) pour appuyer l'initiative « Chaque femme, chaque enfant ». La contribution du MAECD contribue à réduire les coûts d'emprunt des pays visés par le MFM qui souhaitent avoir accès aux fonds obtenus grâce aux obligations sous la forme d'un financement fondé sur le rendement. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) formation des travailleurs de la santé communautaire; 2) amélioration des systèmes de données sur la santé; 3) augmentation des investissements en santé au moyen d'une amélioration de la sensibilisation dans le secteur privé. Le renforcement des systèmes de santé est une partie importante des efforts que déploie le Canada pour améliorer la santé génésique, maternelle, néonatale et infantile, parce que des systèmes robustes sont indispensables à la prestation de services essentiels de qualité aux femmes et aux enfants.

This initiative seeks to impro...ving the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities. Activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training for health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, including providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government resource planning; and, (7) implementing digital and media campaigns to raise awareness of Canadian public on global MNCH issues. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1 million women, more than 900,000 children under five years of age, and over 200,000 adolescent girls, as well as over 1.1 million men with improved MNCH services. An estimated 1.8 million individuals are expected to benefit from the initiative's results indirectly. In addition, activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 700,000 Canadians / Le projet vise à améliorer la santé des femmes, des adolescentes, des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans les régions mal desservies grâce à une approche communautaire et à la collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. This project seeks to improvin...g the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities. All project countries have established meaningful health legislation, governance bodies, and in some instances, the necessary infrastructure. Due to weak quality, inclusiveness (e.g. youth-friendliness), and gender-responsiveness of health services delivery and health care management, service delivery, operationalization and increased access and utilization of maternal newborn child health/sexual and reproductive health services (MNCH/SRH) require support. Specific challenges include: 1) weak health seeking behaviour by disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised women of child bearing age (WCBA) and their families; Particularly high MNCH/SRH risks exist for adolescent mothers and high rates of child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM); 3) WCBA's lack of decision-making capacity and low access to and control over social and economic assets due, to pervasive gender inequality; 4) inaccessible, fragmented and client-unfriendly health systems; 5) low numbers and inadequate skills of Community Health Workers and frontline workers to provide quality, gender responsive, adolescent friendly health care; and 6) irregular tracking and use of data by Ministry of Health, and poor accountability of health services to local communities. However, this progress often conceals widening disparities in given countries or regions. This project aims to address health disparities and gaps in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), by prioritizing interventions identified as critical to advancing progress in reducing child mortality.Project activities include: (1) conduct and analyse research on health needs and solutions for mothers and children; (2) review and enhance existing policies and guidelines to improve MNCH; (3) develop and provide training on gender responsive MNCH interventions, on civil registration and vital statistics systems, and on health information management system; (4) test and implement models to address gaps in MNCH; (5) develop and deliver community awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on MNCH interventions; and (6) procure and distribute critical health supplies.This project is part of Canada's commitment for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité infantile dans les régions ciblées et à venir en aide à quelque 452 345 femmes et 3 740 379 enfants. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal and infant mortality rates by strengthening health services in the Bunia and Djugu health districts. The project focuses on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and the provision of proper care for HIV/AIDS-affected children; training health care providers; educating and informing communities; and strengthening the administration of health care. Activities include: awareness raising activities on preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS, and mother-to-child transmission of HIV; updating training materials on obstetric and neonatal care, family planning, and assistance to women who are victims of violence; providing health care supplies and medicines; and rehabilitation of maternity hospitals. The project reaches 48,444 pregnant women, 230 health care workers, and 3,400 newborns with HIV-positive mothers. OXFAM Québec is working in partnership with Union congolaise des organisations des personnes vivant avec le VIH/sida to implement this project. This project is part of Canada s Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. / Ce projet réduit les taux de mortalité des mères et des nouveau-nés en renforçant les services de santé des districts de santé de Bunia et Djugu. Le projet se concentre sur la prévention de la transmission du VIH/SIDA de la mère à l enfant et la provision de soins adéquats pour les enfants atteints du VIH/SIDA. Il vise également la formation des fournisseurs de soins de santé, l éducation et l information aux communautés, et le renforcement de la gestion des soins de santé. Les activités comprennent la sensibilisation sur la prévention de la transmission de maladies transmises sexuellement et le VIH/SIDA, ainsi que la transmission du VIH de mère à enfant. D autres activités comprennent la mise à jour du matériel de formation sur les soins obstétriques et néonataux, la planification familiale, et l aide aux femmes qui sont victimes de violence. D autres activités comprennent la provision de fournitures de santé et de médicaments, et la restauration d hôpitaux de maternité. Le projet atteint 48 444 femmes enceintes, 230 travailleurs de la santé et 3 400 nouveau-nés dont les mères sont séropositives. The Global Health Research Ini...tiative (GHRI) is a partnership of three Canadian government agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Canadian International Development Agency, and IDRC. Working with researchers and decision-makers around the world to tackle global health challenges, the Initiative promotes collaboration and reciprocal learning between low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and Canada. From 2012-2016, GHRI will provide global health evidence to inform the policies and programs of Canadian federal agencies, and will act as a resource on global health research policy matters. It will also fund research programs, including the Africa Health System Initiative Support to African Research Partnership, HIV/AIDS Prevention Trials Capacity Building Grants Phase 2, the Canadian International Immunization Initiative for Haiti, and the Ecohealth Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Competition in Southeast Asia. As well, a new flagship program will focus on strengthening health systems and addressing maternal, newborn, and child health challenges in LMICs by supporting research on community-based primary health care. These programs will strengthen the capacities of LMIC and Canadian researchers and decision-makers in generating, sharing, and applying research on global health.

This project aims to improve c...hild survival and maternal health in Ethiopia by ensuring that quality basic health services reach more mothers and children under age five. The activities funded by CIDA consist of procuring and distributing essential drugs, supplies and medical equipment. This is one component of a larger multi-donor program. Contributions from other donors and from the Government of Ethiopia help ensure that health facilities are properly staffed and maintained. Specifically, CIDA's contribution is designed to result in a more timely and complete supply of medical commodities (e.g. vaccines, anti-malarial bed-nets, clean childbirth kits) and equipment (e.g. microscopes, instrument sterilizers, obstetric equipment) at frontline health facilities throughout Ethiopia. All CIDA disbursements for this project have been completed. / Le projet vise à augmenter les taux de survie des enfants et à améliorer la santé maternelle en Éthiopie en assurant des services de santé de base de qualité à un plus grand nombre de femmes et d'enfants de moins de cinq ans. Les activités financées par l'ACDI portent sur l'approvisionnement et la distribution de médicaments, de fournitures et d'équipement médical essentiels. Ce projet fait partie d'un plus vaste programme multidonateurs, dans lequel les contributions des autres donateurs et du gouvernement éthiopien aident à assurer la dotation en personnel suffisant et l'entretien approprié des installations de santé. Plus précisément, la contribution de l'ACDI vise à fournir plus rapidement davantage d'articles médicaux (p. ex. vaccins, moustiquaires antipaludisme et trousses d'accouchement propres) et de matériel (p. ex. microscopes, stérilisateurs d'instruments médicaux, trousses visant à fournir des soins obstétricaux) aux établissements de santé de premières lignes partout en Éthiopie. However, this progress often conceals widening disparities in given countries or regions. This project aims to address health disparities and gaps in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), by prioritizing interventions identified as critical to advancing progress in reducing child mortality.Project activities include: (1) conduct and analyse research on health needs and solutions for mothers and children; (2) review and enhance existing policies and guidelines to improve MNCH; (3) develop and provide training on gender responsive MNCH interventions, on civil registration and vital statistics systems, and on health information management system; (4) test and implement models to address gaps in MNCH; (5) develop and deliver community awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on MNCH interventions; and (6) procure and distribute critical health supplies.This project is part of Canada's commitment for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité infantile dans les régions ciblées et à venir en aide à quelque 452 345 femmes et 3 740 379 enfants. The Ghana Growth and Poverty R...eduction Support Program (GGPRSP) forms the cornerstone of Canada's support towards achieving development objectives in Ghana. The main focus of this contribution is to help the Government of Ghana implement its Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS II, 2006-2009) and subsequent national development plans. GGPRSP Component 1 is Canada's contribution to the Multi-Donor Budgetary Support (MDBS) program. Activities through the MDBS include improving budget planning for poverty reduction, delivery of basic services, strengthening technical and management expertise, and improving public financial management and oversight. As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Ghana to strengthen its aid effectiveness, by focussing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthening mutual accountability. Budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among CIDA, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. This initiative is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors. The expected results for our contribution to MDBS include progress throughout Ghana in areas such as access to education and health care (for girls and boys), as well as provision of other basic services. Additional expected results include progress in other areas, such as improvements in the transparency and rigour of public financial management, and overall capacity building and better governance in Ghana. All this helps to build overall capacity in Ghana and to sustain results achieved, long after the initiative is completed. / Le Programme de soutien à la Stratégie de croissance et de réduction de la pauvreté du Ghana (PSSCRP) constitue la pierre angulaire de l'appui du Canada en vue d'atteindre les objectifs de développement au Ghana. Cette contribution vise principalement à aider le gouvernement du Ghana à mettre en oeuvre sa Stratégie de croissance et de réduction de la pauvreté (phase II, 2006-2009) et ses prochains plans nationaux de développement. Le volet 1 du PSSCRP représente la contribution du Canada au Programme de soutien budgétaire multidonateurs (PSBM). The Ghana Growth and Poverty R...eduction Support Program (GGPRSP) forms the cornerstone of Canada's support towards achieving development objectives in Ghana. As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Ghana to strengthen its aid effectiveness, by focussing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthening mutual accountability. Budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among CIDA, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. This initiative is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors. The expected results for our contribution to MDBS include progress throughout Ghana in areas such as access to education and health care (for girls and boys), as well as provision of other basic services. Additional expected results include progress in other areas, such as improvements in the transparency and rigour of public financial management, and overall capacity building and better governance in Ghana. All this helps to build overall capacity in Ghana and to sustain results achieved, long after the initiative is completed. / Le Programme de soutien à la Stratégie de croissance et de réduction de la pauvreté du Ghana (PSSCRP) constitue la pierre angulaire de l'appui du Canada en vue d'atteindre les objectifs de développement au Ghana. Cette contribution vise principalement à aider le gouvernement du Ghana à mettre en oeuvre sa Stratégie de croissance et de réduction de la pauvreté (phase II, 2006-2009) et ses prochains plans nationaux de développement. Le volet 1 du PSSCRP représente la contribution du Canada au Programme de soutien budgétaire multidonateurs (PSBM). This project seeks to improvin...g the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities. All project countries have established meaningful health legislation, governance bodies, and in some instances, the necessary infrastructure. Due to weak quality, inclusiveness (e.g. youth-friendliness), and gender-responsiveness of health services delivery and health care management, service delivery, operationalization and increased access and utilization of maternal newborn child health/sexual and reproductive health services (MNCH/SRH) require support. Specific challenges include: 1) weak health seeking behaviour by disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised women of child bearing age (WCBA) and their families; Particularly high MNCH/SRH risks exist for adolescent mothers and high rates of child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM); 3) WCBA's lack of decision-making capacity and low access to and control over social and economic assets due, to pervasive gender inequality; 4) inaccessible, fragmented and client-unfriendly health systems; 5) low numbers and inadequate skills of Community Health Workers and frontline workers to provide quality, gender responsive, adolescent friendly health care; and 6) irregular tracking and use of data by Ministry of Health, and poor accountability of health services to local communities. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training for health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, including providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government resource planning; and, (7) implementing digital and media campaigns to raise awareness of Canadian public on global MNCH issues. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1 million women, more than 900,000 children under five years of age, and over 200,000 adolescent girls, as well as over 1.1 million men with improved MNCH services. An estimated 1.8 million individuals are expected to benefit from the initiative's results indirectly. The project aims to reduce chi...ld mortality in targeted regions benefitting an estimated 452,345 women and 3,740,379 children. Substantial progress has been made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health. However, this progress often conceals widening disparities in given countries or regions. This project aims to address health disparities and gaps in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), by prioritizing interventions identified as critical to advancing progress in reducing child mortality. Project activities include: (1) conduct and analyse research on health needs and solutions for mothers and children; (2) review and enhance existing policies and guidelines to improve MNCH; (3) develop and provide training on gender responsive MNCH interventions, on civil registration and vital statistics systems, and on health information management system; (4) test and implement models to address gaps in MNCH; (5) develop and deliver community awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on MNCH interventions; and (6) procure and distribute critical health supplies. The project aims to improve ma...ternal, newborn, and child health in Mali. It supports the Ministry of Health of Mali in implementing the National Health and Social Development Program, especially making health services geographically and financially accessible, meeting demand, improving the quality of services, and building institutional capacity.As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Mali to strengthen its aid effectiveness, by focussing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthening mutual accountability. Sector-wide budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among CIDA, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. This initiative is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors.The initiative's expected results include a stronger health care system that better meets the needs of women, men, and children; improved prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria, diarrhoea, respiratory diseases, and other infectious diseases targeted by an expanded program on immunization; and better nutrition for children under five and pregnant women.This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. This project is one of two parts of a $64 million contribution./ Le projet vise à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants au Mali. Il fournit un soutien au ministère de la Santé du Mali à mettre en oeuvre son Programme national de développement sanitaire et social (PRODESS), plus particulièrement en ce qui concerne l'accessibilité géographique aux services de santé, l'accessibilité financière, le soutien à la demande, l'amélioration de la qualité des services et le renforcement des capacités institutionnelles.Comme c'est le cas pour toutes les initiatives d'appui budgétaire, le Canada travaille en étroite collaboration avec d'autres bailleurs de fonds et le gouvernement du Mali pour accroître l'efficacité de son aide, et ce, en mettant l'emphase sur la responsabilisation, la transparence et l'efficacité des systèmes nationaux, en accroissant la coordination et l'harmonisation entre les donateurs, et en renforçant la responsabilité mutuelle. The project aims to improve ma...ternal, newborn, and child health in Mali. It supports the Ministry of Health of Mali in implementing the National Health and Social Development Program, especially making health services geographically and financially accessible, meeting demand, improving the quality of services, and building institutional capacity.As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Mali to strengthen its aid effectiveness, by focussing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthening mutual accountability. Sector-wide budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among CIDA, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. This initiative is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors.The initiative's expected results include a stronger health care system that better meets the needs of women, men, and children; improved prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria, diarrhoea, respiratory diseases, and other infectious diseases targeted by an expanded program on immunization; and better nutrition for children under five and pregnant women.This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. This project is one of two parts of a $64 million contribution./ Le projet vise à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants au Mali. Il fournit un soutien au ministère de la Santé du Mali à mettre en oeuvre son Programme national de développement sanitaire et social (PRODESS), plus particulièrement en ce qui concerne l'accessibilité géographique aux services de santé, l'accessibilité financière, le soutien à la demande, l'amélioration de la qualité des services et le renforcement des capacités institutionnelles.Comme c'est le cas pour toutes les initiatives d'appui budgétaire, le Canada travaille en étroite collaboration avec d'autres bailleurs de fonds et le gouvernement du Mali pour accroître l'efficacité de son aide, et ce, en mettant l'emphase sur la responsabilisation, la transparence et l'efficacité des systèmes nationaux, en accroissant la coordination et l'harmonisation entre les donateurs, et en renforçant la responsabilité mutuelle. This initiative is a key eleme...nt of the assistance provided by Canada to contribute to Mali reaching its development goals in the health sector, particularly in improving maternal, newborn and child health. It mainly aims to support the Ministry of Health of Mali in implementing is Ten-Year Health and Social Development Plan 2014-2023. As is the case for all budget support initiatives, Canada is working closely with other donors and the Government of Mali to improve the emphasis on accountability, transparency and effectiveness of national systems by increasing coordination and harmonization among donors and strengthening mutual accountability. Budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue between donors, government and partners, which helps to reinforce efforts to provide targeted and effective help and get results from long-term development. Monitoring and continuous evaluation of this initiative are made in conjunction with other donors. / Cette initiative constitue un élément fondamental de l'aide fournie par le Canada au Mali pour qu'il atteigne les objectifs de développement dans le secteur de la santé, particulièrement en matière d'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants. Elle vise essentiellement à appuyer le ministère de la Santé du Mali dans sa mise en oeuvre du Plan décennal de développement sanitaire et social 2014-2023.
