Accountability for Every Woman... - to assess progress on the Global Strategy for women, children and adolescents health
more
|
The World Health Organisation ...(WHO) and the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) are being funded to improve information and accountability for women's, children's and adolescents' health. The programme will result in clearer, coherent and comprehensive reporting at global level; a system to monitor and report on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and related responses in humanitarian crises; better indicators and tools to address key data gaps in neglected areas of women's, children's and adolescents' health; evidence-based guidance for action where this is lacking; and a one-stop shop website and platform for data and relevant reports on the issue.

|
Redressing Gendered Health Ine...qualities of Displaced Women and Girls in contexts of Protracted Crisis in Central and South America (ReGHID)
more
|
Women and young girls who are ...driven by necessity to leave their countries in Central and South America (often on basis of gendered threats such as sexual violence) face a range of gender-specific threats to their health and well-being both in the process of migrating and in the places of settlement that they reach. Sexual and reproductive health is a key component of social development and well-being that is particularly at risk in contexts of displacement (risks of rape and sexual assault, of sexual disease, of lack of contraception or sanitary materials are all features of processes of forced displacement in this region and elsewhere) and the ability of displaced women and girls to access and exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights faces a number of obstacles. These can range in the immediate local context from lack of awareness of rights or of the practical knowledge and skills to negotiate health systems on the part of displaced women and girls to the lack of capacity of local health services to address the needs of displaced females, where these immediate problems point to wider issues of national and regional health governance, of the need for effective planning for flexible responsiveness to crises of displacement that may become protracted and the fair sharing of responsibility for securing rights protection. This matters not only because securing these rights is integral to recognising the dignity of women and girls, but also because it is critical to enabling displaced women and girls to act as agents of development, as productive social and economic agents whose activities support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. ReGHID will: - identify the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and adolescent girls displaced from Central America to Mexico and from Venezuela to Brazil and Colombia, - analyse the challenges that displaced women and girls face in relation to SRH, - assess the impact of displacement on local health systems in the area of SRH, noting the obligations of receiving and transit states to ensure that the human right to health for all is respected and protected, produce original primary data about gendered patterns of inequalities affecting access to and delivery of care in women and girls' SRH during displacement. It does so in order to propose human rights-based and deliverable responses addressing (a) the immediate and longer-term SRH needs of women and adolescent girls in displacement, including guidance, skills and information to equip them to articulate their SRHR, and (b) a responsive Comprehensive Healthcare Model as a policy solution to protect the SRHR of migrant women and girls in contexts of protracted displacement. To be able to do this work, the project has been co-designed, and will be cooperatively carried out, through a partnership between academics and major UN and NGO agencies from the fields of migration, displacement, aid and development. The project will be deli

GCRF_NF123: COVID-19, social d...istancing and violence against women in Brazil (BRAVE)
more
|
Domestic violence against wome...n (DVAW) is a major issue in Brazil. It tends to disproportionally affect women of disadvantaged backgrounds, putting them at a higher risk of poverty and potentially increasing gender-based inequities. Commentators have linked social distancing measures introduced in Brazil to address the spread of COVID-19 to significant increases in DVAW cases, with similar reports in other countries. COVID-19 cases in Brazil are forecast to keep increasing, likely leading to further social distancing measures in the near future, making our research urgent to understand how policies can better protect vulnerable women and reduce the broader impacts of these measures to society. BRAVE seeks to understand how social distancing measures affect DVAW and assess the resulting societal costs of such effect. To this end, we will analyse information on DVAW and its link to social distancing adherence, poverty and the financial cost of DVAW to victims and society, focusing on Brazilian cities. We will also examine how public policies aimed at mitigating the negative consequences of social distancing influence DVAW, and how these policies could be refined to better address DVAW. We will work closely with both the local academic community and representatives of public and other organisations, to offer guidance to improve public policies for DVAW victims in the pandemic context, for Brazil and potentially other countries.

Development of an intervention... to support reproductive health of women after seeking medical abortion in Cambodia
more
|
The aims of this partnership a...re to: (1). Develop a long-term research collaboration between the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in field of mobile/digital health (delivering health care via mobile phones) in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in South-East Asia. (2). Conduct a joint research project between LSHTM and SOAS to study reproductive health after seeking induced abortion for unintended pregnancy and mobile phone use among factory workers in Cambodia from holistic medical, cultural, and information-sharing practices perspectives, (3). Integrate project-based qualitative methods (such as interviews and focus groups) used in the medical field with the long-term orientated ethnographic (observational) methods and language approaches from the humanities, to better understand the socio-cultural implications of digital technologies in healthcare in LMICs. Understanding Cambodian female factory workers reproductive health needs after medical abortion (MA), together with understanding how people seek information, share information and use mobile phones could help inform the development of a relevant and highly used intervention to support comprehensive post-abortion care (such as support for side-effects or health issues and contraception use). In order to do so, however, it is necessary to understand (1). Women's current behaviours in information seeking and sharing, (2). The way in which people currently use mobile phones, and how they fit within off-line practices of information sharing, (3). Cultural challenges around reproductive health, both also mobile phones, (4). Linguistic challenges around mobile phone use, e.g. language input, or oral versus written practices. A partnership between LSHTM, with medical expertise, SOAS, whose specialisation is on socio-cultural and language aspects of mobile phone communication in Asia, and Marie Stopes International, a Non-Governmental Organisation long involved in the field and active in Cambodia, would allow understanding of the situation, challenges, and potential solutions from a truly holistic perspective. The partnership will involve activities in the UK and Cambodia with the following goals: (1): In London, develop research collaboration between LSHTM, SOAS, and Marie Stopes in the field of Digital Health and in the context of South-East Asia through (a) inter-disciplinary Digital Health research seminars, to be held monthly at LSHTM and SOAS, about themes arising from the research project and open to staff, students and NGOs (specifically this will involve the expansion of the LSHTM eHealth group (http://ehealth.lshtm.ac.uk/) to SOAS with a new name and website e.g. a 'Bloomsbury Digital Health group'), (b) collaboration between PhD and MSc/MA students at the respective organisations by involving them on the research project and seminars, (c) monthly meetings between the four named UK-based pr

GENDERED VIOLENCE AND URBAN TR...ANSFORMATION IN INDIA AND SOUTH AFRICA
more
|
Gendered Violence and Urban Tr...ansformation in India and South Africa
more
|
Violence against women affects... almost 1 in 3 women across the world, and many scholars claim that it has risen over the past 20 years. This violence takes various forms ranging from rape, intimate/domestic partner violence, including emotional, financial, and physical abuse, female infanticide, sex-selective abortion, forced trafficking, and sexual harassment. These forms of violence affect women in families, workplaces, police custody, educational institutions, and various public spaces. The field of study on violence against women is currently fragmented across disciplines such as criminology, public health, and demography. The data and methodology of a large number of influential studies tends to be based on surveys and big data, although qualitative studies are increasingly common. These studies have filled a crucial gap by highlighting risk factors such as alcoholism, abusive family history, poverty, lack of basic infrastructure among others. However, with few notable exceptions there is a paucity of studies that demonstrate the mechanisms that translate risk factors into actual acts of violence, that build comparisons across specific cases, and that situate both the presence of violence and responses to it, in national, regional and local histories of gender formation. Our research will push the frontiers of a 'second wave' of research on violence by moving in the direction of deeper and more complex theorising of violence, of its causes and motivating factors. The two urban cases Delhi that are the focus of this project - Delhi NCR (India) and Johannesburg (South Africa) - have acquired a reputation for very high levels of sexual violence, both private and public. As cities within countries undergoing rapid transition - post-apartheid liberalisation in South Africa, and state-led development to economic liberalisation and Hindu nationalism in India - gender relations and enactments of violence in these countries have multiple, inter-related causes that vary across caste, class, race, and region. We will ask whether and how factors such as racial or class inequality, poverty, or other environmental, contextual and historical factors make a difference to actual enactments of violence - sexual and interpersonal - against women. How does urban transformation affect gender relations, women's autonomy, and the perceived clash between 'tradition' and 'modernity'? To answer these questions requires time-consuming and painstaking qualitative research, with long-term immersion in the field. Such immersion will elicit the deeper mechanisms beneath correlating factors such as class and violence, and allow us to better understand whether and how poverty, racism or other structural factors enable violence in particular families, or individuals' lives, and furthermore to develop a better understanding of invisibilised middle-class gendered violence. To understand the complex dynamics of violence requires an appreciation of how these major transformatio

REDUCING INFECTION RISKS IN MA...TERNITY AND NEONATAL WARDS THROUGH IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY IN THE GAMBIA.
more
|
Reducing infection risks in ma...ternity and neonatal wards through improved environmental hygiene: an exploratory study in The Gambia.
more
|
Context of the research Infect...ion is a leading cause of maternal and newborn deaths, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where there is also a high burden of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), and where exposure to unhygienic practices and environment further poses a substantial risk to mothers and newborns. The HAIs occurring in these settings are often caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, whose transmission is the result of several factors including inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), poor infection control, inadequate cleaning, and overcrowding wards. Aims and objectives Our research aims to explore the role of an environmental cleaning package and its effect on some of the most vulnerable patients in African hospitals - women and newborns. The specific objectives are: 1. To establish baseline measurements of environmental contamination in the maternity and neonatal units in two hospitals in The Gambia, including two-weekly variability in such measures, 2. To develop a contextually appropriate cleaning training package specifically for newborn units in LMICs, with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa 3. To pilot this training package intervention in two large hospitals in The Gambia and measure potential impact on environmental cleanliness. 4. To establish a network of researchers and relevant WASH/IPC stakeholders, including the regional Maternal-Newborn Infection network and Infection Control Africa Network (ICAN), and build collaborations to support a future West African trial of the same cleaning intervention across multiple regional neonatal units, bringing together academic partners in West Africa and the UK. Potential applications and benefits Clean and hygienic health care facilities can help establish trust in health services and encourage mothers to seek prenatal care and deliver in facilities rather than at home - two important elements of the strategy to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. The findings from our study will also contribute new evidence for the new global action plan arising from the World Health Resolution on WASH, IPC and AMR We will use the learning derived from this preliminary work to convene a network of researchers to build the case for a future African trial of this cleaning training package intervention against an infectious outcome across multiple neonatal units.

The Effect of Local Crime on C...hild Marriage, School Dropout, and Employment Outcomes: A Gender Perspective from India

A pressing current concern in ...India is how the benefits of its high economic growth may be distributed equitably, leading to poverty alleviation, a reduction in inequalities between different groups in society and an increased economic participation resulting in further economic growth. However, it has become increasingly clear that India has experienced various difficulties in linking economic growth to these desirable outcomes and risks a significant stalling in economic development if these issues are not addressed. Key issue amongst these is the economic and social status of women in Indian society which affects their human capital development and participation in the labour market, particularly the formal labour market (Afridi et al., 2018, Klasen, 2017). Discussion has centred on the existing evidence of less economic opportunities for women, and increasing income of male members of households. However, the relevance of school to marriage or work transition and how it is affected by cultural norms have not been given much attention in the discussion. The proposed research will draw upon previous IAA NGO data funding received in 2018 which examined the NGO held data to understand the issue of child labour in India. This funding allowed the PI to develop links with the Indian NGO, Child Rights & You (CRY), and scope the existing data held by the organisation. This scoping exercise revealed that CRY held significant, underutilised data on adolescence, with a specific focus on girls' education. The research will use this quantitative and qualitative data, combined with other official data sources, to examine how three manifestations of gender inequality: crime against women as well as gender neutral crime, child marriage, and female school drop-out, are interlinked and together inhibit female labour market participation and prevent the realisation of the benefits this has for the Indian economy.
