The Democracy Human Rights and... Governance Learning, Evaluation and Research (DRG-LER II) award continues to advance learning, evaluation, and research within the DRG sector as well as provide critical data on the impact of USAID's DRG activities in the field. Findings from this activity support USAID Mission project evaluation goals and the implementation of the DRG Learning Agenda - an effort to build empirical evidence that tests the theories of change guiding USAID's DRG projects. The Learning Agenda informs future programming choices by DCHA/DRG and the worldwide cadre. DRG-LER II also contributes to USAID's unique role as the leading bilateral donor for DRG activities worldwide. .

EnCompass works with USAIDs Of...fice of Gender Equality and Womens Empowerment (GenDev) to update, deliver, and evaluate a blended learning program comprised of four courses for USAID/Washington and Mission staff worldwide: Achieving Development Objectives through Gender Integration (ADS 205 Course) that builds capacity of USAID staff to operationalize the Automated Directive Systems (ADS) Chapter 205: Integrating Gender Equality and Female Empowerment in USAIDs Program Cycle. Integrating Gender-based Violence Prevention and Response (GBV Course) that invites USAID staff to reflect on how to prevent and respond to GBV through both a personal and programmatic lens by exploring GBV prevention and response in one or more of the following programmatic sectors: education, rule of law, energy and infrastructure, crisis and conflict management, global health, economic growth, and agriculture and food security. ADS 205 and GBV Hybrid Course (Hybrid Course) that was developed for missions that have expressed interest in both courses, but lack the time or funding to take advantage of the two independent courses. Gender Integration Training of Trainers Course (TOT Course) that responds to an increasing demand for the three courses listed above by building the capacity of USAID staff to (co-) facilitate the trainings. Its primary focus is on having participants deliver the sessions, receive feedback, and engage in self-assessment.

USAID STOP GBV PROJECT
|
USAID Stop GBV project
|
The project will seek to stren...gthen the opportunity for girls, women, boys, men, and key/priority populations to live lives free of GBV and enjoy healthy, gender-equitable relationships. The project goal will be met via the pursuit of three objectives: Prevention of GBV and increase support for gender equality among women, men, children and members of key and priority populations. Strengthening access to and uptake of quality post-GBV services for GBV survivors. Strengthening and support the implementation of laws and policies regarding GBV, gender equality, and female empowerment, and increase the congruence of customary laws with national laws. It is understood that all activities will require a multi-sectoral, interdisciplinary, and coordinated response planning approach and GBV definition will include child marriage. Gender Based Violence shall be conceptualized as an umbrella term for any harmful threat or act directed at an individual or group based on actual or perceived biological sex, gender identity and/or expression, sexual orientation, and/or lack of adherence to varying socially constructed norms around masculinity and femininity. It is rooted in structural gender inequalities, patriarchy, and power imbalances. GBV is typically characterized by the use or threat of physical, psychological, sexual, economic, legal, political, social and other forms of control and/or abuse. GBV impacts individuals across the life course and has direct and indirect costs to families, communities, economies, global public health, and development. Gender imbalances within Zambian culture have dramatically impacted the role and status of women and girls, while leading to negative results for all members of society. Of special significance, the role of gender in the HIV epidemic highlights the immediate need for activities that address inequality leading to that increased transmission of HIV. It is in this line that PEPFAR integrates GBV response into its mainstream HIV respon

The Democracy, Human Rights an...d Governance Learning, Evaluation and Research (DRG-LER II) award continues to advance learning, evaluation, and research within the DRG sector as well as provide critical data on the impact of USAID's DRG activities in the field.

GEO-REFERENCED HEALTH INFORMAT...ION FOR MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PLANNING IN URBAN BANGLADESH
more
|
Geo-Referenced Health Informat...ion for Maternal and Child Health Planning in Urban Bangladesh
more
|
This research will provide evi...dence to enhance understanding of how geo-referenced health facility information can inform maternal and child health service planning and decision-making in Bangladesh. Geo-referenced data associates information with a physical space or location. This information can improve data synthesis and feed into health planning by decision-makers, including health ministries. Limited information for health planning National health management information systems in lower- and middle-income countries are generally limited to information on public sector health services, yet private health services account for the majority of service provision. These systems rarely have basic information, such as health facility location, on private providers in South Asia. This knowledge is important for health planning. Efforts aligned with new government health system The Urban Health Group at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh will carry out the research. The group has developed a geo-referenced information platform for urban services to complement the existing health management information system. Known as the Urban Health Atlas, it facilitates data synthesis and communication to support health planning. At the same time, the Bangladesh Directorate General of Health Services is implementing District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS 2) in line with the government's commitment to a digital Bangladesh. The system is based on information on public health facilities, which are mostly located in rural areas. With the exception of large public hospitals and some non-governmental organizations, there is no centralized data for private health facilities offering the majority of services in urban areas. The Urban Health Atlas fills this important gap. Information in the hands of decision-makers This study will document how to make geo-referenced health facility information more accessible and useful to heath planners and decision-makers. It will identify the processes involved in generating policy uptake. The project will also use best practices to develop skills and knowledge to promote the use of health information in planning maternal and child health services. The research team will: -assess information needs -conduct a task review analysis of information users -map stakeholders -estimate cost The project will provide valuable guidance to other developing countries on how to generate user buy-in and policy uptake to introduce, scale up, and sustain maternal and child health related technologies in national health information systems.

Determinants and consequences ...of cadmium exposure among pregnant women in Dhaka, Bangladesh: an observational cohort study
more

As environmental exposure to c...admium (Cd) has been shown to be prevalent in Bangladesh, my research will be focusing on a cohort of pregnant Bangladeshi women from the Maternal Vitamin D for Infant Growth (MDIG) trial, conduced by my supervisor. This cohort is ideally suited to investigate the determinants of Cd exposure, as well as the health consequences related to excess Cd. In my proposed study, the dose-dependent effect of prenatal vitamin D supplementation on blood Cd concentrations will be investigated. We will explore dietary and environmental contributors to Cd exposure and burden in the cohort, including dietary patterns (based on a food frequency questionnaire), tobacco exposure (based on urine cotinine levels and reported smoking in the household) and reported habitual use of other stimulants (e.g. betel, areca). We will also be quantifying Cd in selected food and tobacco products (such as rice, leafy green vegetables, and cigarettes) currently available in markets in Dhaka, Bangladesh. One of the most clearly established consequences of Cd exposure over time is renal dysfunction. Thus, among the study cohort, we will be investigating the association of blood Cd levels and biomarkers of renal function (including serum creatinine, cystatin-C, urine albumin, and blood pressure). In secondary analysis, we will also investigate associations of maternal blood cadmium concentrations with offspring outcomes (including preterm birth and small-for-gestational age). The implications of my proposed research project are that if vitamin D supplementation is shown to increase blood Cd concentrations, upper limits of supplementation may be required to protect women and infants from the negative health effects of Cd toxicity.

PREVENTING TEEN PREGNANCY IN B...ENIN: DEVELOPMENT OF A SELF-ESTEEM-BASED INTERVENTION TO EMPOWER ADOLESCENTS

|
Preventing teen pregnancy in B...enin: development of a self-esteem-based intervention to empower adolescents
more
|
The goal of this project is to... reduce teen pregnancy in Benin by developing and promoting an innovative, evidence-based intervention combining sexual and reproductive health, self-esteem, and empowerment that targets adolescents. In Benin, adolescents and youth aged 10 to 24 make up 33% of the total population, and the teen fertility rate is high. This results in lower education rates, loss of economic potential, and short and long-term health consequences. Stopgap measures have been implemented to reduce the teen pregnancy rate. However, since psychosocial and economic factors are not considered, these measures have been largely ineffective in the general adolescent population. This action research project is based on multidisciplinary participative approaches uniting all stakeholders in adolescent sexual and reproductive health. It will use mixed methods, with evaluation research of the intervention based on a quasi-experimental pre and post-intervention study with testimonials. It will include a gender-based approach to clearly identify and take into account the power dynamics between men/boys and women/girls and the underlying social norms. The main expected outcomes of this study include identifying and analyzing intervention factors to propose a plan and a method for scaling up. In the short and medium terms, this project will change adolescents' behaviour, making them more self-confident and empowered. In the long term, this will help significantly reduce adolescent fertility. This is one of nine projects in a cohort of research projects focusing on two regions (West Africa and the Middle East) and addressing two thematic issues (adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems). The project is closely aligned with Canada's new Feminist International Assistance Policy, the strategic priorities outlined in the WHO's Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health (2016–2030), and the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

more
|

Dissemination, Consultation & ...Education: Engaging Multi-Sectoral Knowledge Users to Improve Health Care Services and Supports to Address Violence Against Women in Guyana
more
|
Compared to other Caribbean co...untries, Guyana ranks highest in gender-based violence (GBV), specifically violence against women. Although national legislation has been enacted, GBV continues to be a major human rights & public health issue in Guyana due to implementation issues & the siloed nature of policies. The consequences of GBV are devastating. Women who experience GBV can develop immediate, acute, long-term & chronic health problems, including mental, physical, sexual & reproductive disorders. GBV is also associated with substance abuse, PTSD, depression, anxiety & suicidal tendencies. Most research in South America & the Caribbean has focused on understanding GBV as a problem. Little is known about the obstacles encountered by Guyanese health, police & legal professionals when addressing GBV. Less is known about best practices for treating GBV in Guyanese health care settings, making it a priority research area. Funding for a 2-day Symposium bringing together key Knowledge Users actively working on GBV in Guyana will serve three objectives: 1.Research Dissemination: Disseminating findings from the UN Women's Health & Life Experiences Survey to a broad range of knowledge users who will be asked to provide recommendations for implementing findings and developing knowledge translation products. 2.Consultations with Key Knowledge Users: Implications of research findings, challenges accessing & providing GBV treatment & supports will be considered for each sector. Suggestions for a multi-sectoral approach to educate, prevent, address & treat GBV in Guyana will be discussed. 3.Planning for Future Research: Key knowledge users & international partners will develop collaborative, culturally-relevant, multi-sectoral implementation research ideas which address obstacles to accessing health care services as well as other supports for violence against women.

Women's Rights and the Fight t...o Prevent Violence Against Women in Haiti??????
more
|
The visibility and prominence ...of women's rights movements in Haiti has stalled over the last decade, especially since the earthquake of 2010. Gains made during earlier waves of progress – in the 1930's, 1950's, 1980's, and 1990's resulted in increased civic and political rights and spaces for women. However these gains have diminished or reversed in recent times. The post-earthquake period characterized by top-down and externally led humanitarian interventions led to a defunding of women's organizations. In spite of this, a strong grassroots network of women's organizations persists, and the feminist movement endures. One of the salient issues on their agenda is violence against women. The overall objective of this project is to strengthen Haitian research, intervention and advocacy capacities on women's rights, particularly on preventing violence against women. This project aims to investigate and document the repercussions of long term international interventions on women's rights and violence against women in Haiti. It intends to promote the enhancement and sustainability of feminist knowledge in Haitian academia. The project will work alongside Haitian civil society organizations, academia and government representatives to contribute to improving the broader enabling environment for gender discussions, as well as policy and practice on preventing gender based violence in Haiti through the creation of a repository and capacity building activities for emerging researchers. The project will work in close collaboration with another IDRC supported project that focuses on providing more equitable, quality, intersectoral and accessible sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) services to Haitian women and girls using an evidence-based and participatory process. This project is also a good fit with Canada's Feminist International Assistance Policy and it is closely aligned with a high-priority foreign assistance objective of the Government of Canada, which is the empowerment of vulnerable adolescent girls in Haiti.??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Scoping Study for Regional Res...earch Hubs on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in the Middle East and North Africa and West Africa

The aim of this scoping study ...is to conduct a thorough review and analysis of appropriate models for research hubs – often referred to as centres of research excellence – on adolescent sexual and reproductive health in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and in West Africa. The largest cohort of youth in history is entering their reproductive age; however many do not obtain the information needed to acquire the knowledge and develop the skills to exercise their rights or to access the services required to protect themselves from harmful situations and their consequences. This situation is acute in several regions, including in the MENA and West Africa. In both regions, adolescents, particularly girls, face high risks of early marriage, sexual and gender based violence and transactional sex. Gender inequalities, and negative social norms and practices can compound risks related to sexual and reproductive health. There is a pressing need for robust, ethical, and participatory research on adolescent sexual and reproductive health behaviours, information and services. Exploring suitable models and approaches to support sustained regional research efforts and build research leaders can help address these knowledge gaps with context-specific and rigorous evidence. Outputs from the project include a final report to IDRC summarizing the analysis and presenting recommendations on institutions and institutional arrangements, a presentation of the results at a relevant regional or international conference, and an open access peer-reviewed publication.
