The Democracy Human Rights and... Governance Learning, Evaluation and Research (DRG-LER II) award continues to advance learning, evaluation, and research within the DRG sector as well as provide critical data on the impact of USAID's DRG activities in the field. Findings from this activity support USAID Mission project evaluation goals and the implementation of the DRG Learning Agenda - an effort to build empirical evidence that tests the theories of change guiding USAID's DRG projects. The Learning Agenda informs future programming choices by DCHA/DRG and the worldwide cadre. DRG-LER II also contributes to USAID's unique role as the leading bilateral donor for DRG activities worldwide. .

Civil society organizations (C...SOs) play a crucial role in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem in bringing about concrete, sustainable and locally-owned change. In line with its long-time commitment to supporting Palestinian civil society, USAID West Bank/Gaza (USAID/WBG) intends to fund a select group of activities to be implemented by Palestinian CSOs in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. USAID/WBG refers to this group of activities as Local Initiatives 2017 (LI17). Broadly speaking, the activities to be funded under these awards will support Palestinian civil society efforts to hold the public sector and private sector accountable. Activities may focus on the following areas: 1. Enhance rights of marginalized groups including children, people with disabilities and vulnerable communities. 2. Combat gender-based violence.3. Increase transparency, accountability, and citizen oversight of nationally-provided services.4. Youth empowerment in communities. 5. Support the freedom and independence of the press. 6. Strengthen women's participation in the public and private sectors (especially leadership positions); increase womens access to justice; and decrease gender gaps in political and economic participation.

USAID STOP GBV PROJECT
|
USAID Stop GBV project
|
The project will seek to stren...gthen the opportunity for girls, women, boys, men, and key/priority populations to live lives free of GBV and enjoy healthy, gender-equitable relationships. The project goal will be met via the pursuit of three objectives: Prevention of GBV and increase support for gender equality among women, men, children and members of key and priority populations. Strengthening access to and uptake of quality post-GBV services for GBV survivors. Strengthening and support the implementation of laws and policies regarding GBV, gender equality, and female empowerment, and increase the congruence of customary laws with national laws. It is rooted in structural gender inequalities, patriarchy, and power imbalances. GBV is typically characterized by the use or threat of physical, psychological, sexual, economic, legal, political, social and other forms of control and/or abuse. GBV impacts individuals across the life course and has direct and indirect costs to families, communities, economies, global public health, and development. Gender imbalances within Zambian culture have dramatically impacted the role and status of women and girls, while leading to negative results for all members of society. Of special significance, the role of gender in the HIV epidemic highlights the immediate need for activities that address inequality leading to that increased transmission of HIV. It is in this line that PEPFAR integrates GBV response into its mainstream HIV respon

It is understood that all activities will require a multi-sectoral, interdisciplinary, and coordinated response planning approach and GBV definition will include child marriage. Gender Based Violence shall be conceptualized as an umbrella term for any harmful threat or act directed at an individual or group based on actual or perceived biological sex, gender identity and/or expression, sexual orientation, and/or lack of adherence to varying socially constructed norms around masculinity and femininity. The Democracy, Human Rights an...d Governance Learning, Evaluation and Research (DRG-LER II) award continues to advance learning, evaluation, and research within the DRG sector as well as provide critical data on the impact of USAID's DRG activities in the field.

Protecting Human Rights
|
The Protecting Human Rights (P...HR) activity will continue its work to reduce domestic violence and child marriage and prevent violence against women including sexual harassment, and other human rights violations. To achieve these goals, the activity will train more than 8,000 Government of Bangladesh (GOB) officials, police, judges, lawyers, elected local representatives, teachers, and civil society organizations to improve their ability to prevent violence against women and child marriage. The activity will also organize educational and motivational sessions in 101 schools in USAID-assisted areas and provide 66 legal counselors to increase access to justice for survivors of domestic violence through alternate dispute resolution and formal legal proceedings. Finally, the PHR activity will support the GOB in adopting and enforcing comprehensive women's rights and domestic violence policies, including an amendment of the 1929 Child Marriage Restraint Act.

OVERCOMING GENDER-BASED VIOLEN...CE (GBV) TO ENSURE WOMEN S FULL ENJOYMENT OF RIGHTS
more
|
Overcoming Gender-based Violen...ce (GBV) to Ensure Women s Full Enjoyment of Rights
more
|
Through its Reconciliation and... Inclusion portfolio, USAID/Colombia's Overcoming Gender-based Violence Activity (OGBV) strengthens local and national institutions, as well as civil society organizations, to improve prevention, attention, and protection measures for victims of GBV. To do this, the OGBV activity will conduct a series of surveys related to institutional capacity and social tolerance towards GBV at three points during the five-year period. Data gathered through the survey process will inform awareness campaigns to address cultural standards that normalize violence against women and girls, as well as technical assistance provided to public institutions and civil society organizations within the attention and protection routes for GBV victims. This activity is implemented at the national level as well as in the departments of Meta, Cauca, and Antioquia where rates of violence towards women are significantly higher than the national average. The overall goal of the activity is to diminish national rates of GBV through data-driven awareness campaigns and by leaving in place sustainable and functional institutions and organizations within the attention routes for survivors of GBV.

USAID Counter Gender-Based Vio...lence (C-GBV) aims to strengthen communities' ability to prevent and respond to GBV, reduce the incidence of GBV and improve the quality of, and access to, holistic care for survivors including family planning and reproductive health , particularly among vulnerable groups such as internally displaced persons (IDPs), and youth. While emphasizing youth as the key entry point to creating and sustaining GBV-free communities, and in collaboration with local partners, C-GBV attempts to shift community norms towards gender sensitive attitudes and therefore reduce the propensity to gender-based violence. Major activities include rolling-out an evidence-based Social and Behavior Change Communication Campaign that shifts community norms to adopt positive gender roles, while reducing stigma and negative attitudes that prevent survivor reintegration. To survivors, the activity will offer more accessible community-level services and re-engineered one-stop centers (Ushindi Houses) designed to be wholly owned and sustained by the communities and the government. Furthermore, the activity will provide needed relief for survivors, offering myriad mobile and static legal services and family and reproductive health services to help them (and communities) recover. The activity works closely with complementary USAID partners to enhance program impact, reach, and cost effectiveness.
