USAID Counter Gender-Based Vio...lence (C-GBV) aims to strengthen communities' ability to prevent and respond to GBV, reduce the incidence of GBV and improve the quality of, and access to, holistic care for survivors including family planning and reproductive health , particularly among vulnerable groups such as internally displaced persons (IDPs), and youth. While emphasizing youth as the key entry point to creating and sustaining GBV-free communities, and in collaboration with local partners, C-GBV attempts to shift community norms towards gender sensitive attitudes and therefore reduce the propensity to gender-based violence. Major activities include rolling-out an evidence-based Social and Behavior Change Communication Campaign that shifts community norms to adopt positive gender roles, while reducing stigma and negative attitudes that prevent survivor reintegration. To survivors, the activity will offer more accessible community-level services and re-engineered one-stop centers (Ushindi Houses) designed to be wholly owned and sustained by the communities and the government. Furthermore, the activity will provide needed relief for survivors, offering myriad mobile and static legal services and family and reproductive health services to help them (and communities) recover. The activity works closely with complementary USAID partners to enhance program impact, reach, and cost effectiveness.

Prevention and Response to Gen...der Based Violence in the Middle East
more
|
This is a three year flexible ...program that is designed for the region and its complexities and that recognizes immediate term achievements help advance the medium and longer term goals necessary to noticeably reduce gender based violence (GBV). This program will provide tailored responses to address GBV in those countries in active conflict and crises and in those countries undergoing political transition in various forms. Substantively, the program will address issues around prevention, protection and response, as appropriate to the situation on the ground. Baseline research and changing ground dynamics will determine final programming decisions. However, it is planned that in those countries engaged in/responding to active conflict and crisis, over the immediate, medium and long term, illustrative programming may include: strengthening and institutionalizing ongoing humanitarian protection efforts with regards to the provision of psycho-social support, health care and access to education; capacity building of civil society to ensure service delivery for survivors of GBV; and work to institutionalize and enforce legal mechanisms to ensure women's full social and political participation, including in potential peace negotiations and post-conflict reconstruction efforts. In countries undergoing political transition over the immediate, medium and long term, our actions will include: behavior change awareness and messaging through engagement with youth, men, community and religious leaders; access to economic and social resources for survivors of GBV; and, policy and legal reform regarding GBV survivors' access to justice. Potential partners may include local and/or international non-governmental and/or civil society organizations, partner governments, local educational institutions, other bilateral and multilateral donors and implementing partners.

Koota Injena is a proof-of-co...ncept learning project designed to leverage Amref's ongoing work with clan elders and leaders to generate intergenerational dialogue between clan elders, women, and youth champions to address inequitable norms that support the on-going practice of Child, Early and Forced Marriage (CEFM) and Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting (FGM/C). The project is based in Marsabit and Samburu, two counties of Kenya where CEFM and FGM/C prevalence rates are extremely high.

The Democracy Human Rights and... Governance Learning, Evaluation and Research (DRG-LER II) award continues to advance learning, evaluation, and research within the DRG sector as well as provide critical data on the impact of USAID's DRG activities in the field. Findings from this activity support USAID Mission project evaluation goals and the implementation of the DRG Learning Agenda - an effort to build empirical evidence that tests the theories of change guiding USAID's DRG projects. The Learning Agenda informs future programming choices by DCHA/DRG and the worldwide cadre. DRG-LER II also contributes to USAID's unique role as the leading bilateral donor for DRG activities worldwide. .

WOMEN'S PEACE CAMPAIGN PROJECT
|
Women's Peace Campaign Project
|
The project will provide suppo...rt for Gender Based Violence (GBV) awareness and prevention activities, will establish a viable women's network, and will strengthen women's organizations and women leaders. Although this is a short project timeframe, the US Embassy views these activities as an important part of a USG conflict mitigation strategy in preparation for the 2012 elections. Women connected through a peace network will be equipped to rapidly mitigate violence. The local Peace Platforms will provide community members with a tool they can use to hold their local leaders accountable to the community, especially during the 2012 elections.

DRG LER II (Large) - Gender Ba...sed Violence (GBV) Learning Agenda
more
|
The Democracy Human Rights and... Governance Learning, Evaluation and Research (DRG-LER II) award continues to advance learning, evaluation, and research within the DRG sector as well as provide critical data on the impact of USAID's DRG activities in the field. Findings from this activity support USAID Mission project evaluation goals and the implementation of the DRG Learning Agenda - an effort to build empirical evidence that tests the theories of change guiding USAID's DRG projects. The Learning Agenda informs future programming choices by DCHA/DRG and the worldwide cadre. DRG-LER II also contributes to USAID's unique role as the leading bilateral donor for DRG activities worldwide. .
