This project aims to prevent a...nd address violence against women and girls in developing countries, including targeted funding for women and girls living with disabilities. The project supports the United Nations Trust Fund (UNTF) to End Violence against Women, a global, multilateral, grant-making mechanism that supports innovative, evidence-based civil society and women-led solutions, with a focus on preventing violence against women and girls, implementing laws and policies to address and eliminate violence against them, and improving access to services for survivors. Project activities include: (1) mobilizing, delivering and effectively managing funds for initiatives that prevent and address violence against women and girls, (2) creating a platform for harvesting, analysing and disseminating useful lessons from the results of UNTF initiatives that measurably inform policy and programming on violence against women and girls, and (3) creating partnerships and mobilizing support for increased funding and commitments to end violence against women and girls.

IMPROVING NUTRITION, HEALTH AN...D LIVELIHOODS THROUGH ENHANCED HOMESTEAD FOOD PRODUCTION: A STRATEGY TO REDUCE CHILD MARRIAGE IN BANGLADESH

|
Improving nutrition, health an...d livelihoods through enhanced homestead food production: A strategy to reduce child marriage in Bangladesh
more
|
Bangladesh has the world's hig...hest rate of child marriage among girls under the age of 15. Two-thirds of Bangladeshi girls are married before they turn 18, nearly half become pregnant before 19, and the rates of stunting and underweight are 26% and 36%, respectively. Poverty is the most commonly cited reason for driving families towards child marriage, but the drivers of early marriage are diverse. Previous research has shown that homestead food production is an effective tool to diversify diets, improve nutrition, and generate income in a range of geographical areas and livelihood conditions. This project will test the hypothesis that by enhancing food production and generating income, young girls in Bangladesh will experience lower rates of marriage and pregnancy, and improved food security, dietary diversity, nutritional status and better livelihood conditions overall as compared to a control group. The project aims to implement a gender-transformative enhanced homestead food production and income generation program to document its efficacy in preventing child marriage, and in turn, adolescent pregnancy-induced malnutrition, among girls aged 13-15 years in southern Bangladesh's Khulna division, a high-risk area for child marriage. The project will conduct a cluster-randomized controlled trial in which 1,200 girls in afterschool youth clubs participate in a 24-month program on women's empowerment through hands-on workshops. Participants will be trained in sexual and reproductive health, water, sanitation, and hygiene. Those in the enhanced homestead food production group will also be trained in vegetable, poultry, and small livestock production to help improve nutrient intake and provide a source of income for the families of adolescent girls. The project will also address the traditional beliefs and social norms associated with the high prevalence of child marriage in Bangladesh by using a gender-transformative approach that has reported positive effects on women's decision-making, mobility, and time use.

This project aims to improve t...he well-being of women domestic workers in Bangladesh. Approximately 1.8 million Bangladeshi women are employed as domestic workers in Dhaka, many facing gender-based violence on a regular basis. These women are disadvantaged due to lack of skills and specific vulnerabilities leading to routine exploitation and abuse, and lack of awareness of and protection for their rights. Project activities include: (1) providing women with skills training for formal job opportunities; (2) increasing women's awareness of and protection of their rights; and (3) building the capacity of the Government of Bangladesh and its civil society partners to implement and monitor the Domestic Worker Protection and Welfare Policy./Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être des travailleuses domestiques au Bangladesh.

The project supports the UNFPA...-UNICEF Global Programme to Accelerate Action to End Child Marriage, a multi-donor joint United Nations program aimed at eliminating child marriage in 12 countries in Africa and South Asia where the rates of child marriage are among the highest: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Yemen and Zambia. The project focuses on enabling girls at risk of child marriage to choose and direct their own futures, through activities aimed at bringing about change in the empowerment of girls, with the ultimate aim to prevent child marriage and support already married girls. Project activities include: (1) building the skills and knowledge of girls at risk of child marriage, and married girls, (2) supporting girls to enrol and remain in formal and non-formal education, (3) engaging in dialogue with families, communities and leaders to protect girls from child marriage and uphold their rights, and (4) working with health and protection systems to implement guidelines, protocols and standards for girl-friendly health and protection services. The beneficiaries are girls at risk of child marriage or those already married in Africa and South Asia, particularly those in the 12 countries mentioned above.

This project aims to reduce an...d prevent violence against women in Bolivia and improve public services at the municipal level, in order for them to better respond to the needs of women. Violence against women is the main obstacle to women's ability to exercise their rights, to gain autonomy at the economic, social and political level and to contribute to the country's development. The project focuses on the transformation of social and cultural attitudes in order to reduce the social acceptability of violence against women and youth. It also strengthens the capacities of key stakeholders at the municipal level in budgeting techniques in order for these to integrate the needs of women and girls. The activities of the project include the development and implementation of: 1) awareness-raising campaigns on beliefs/attitudes targeting youth and teachers, 2) a training program on leadership organized for young women and strategic allies, 3) a program and tools to strengthen the competencies of civil society leaders and municipal decision-makers in gender-sensitive budgeting, 4) a digital platform on the budget and municipal services as a means for fostering greater interaction between civil society and the municipalities targeted by the project. The project is being implemented in seven municipalities of the metropolitan regions of La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, which represent 40 % of Bolivia's population, or about 4.2 million inhabitants (CENSO 2012). A total of 20,000 people, 60 % of whom are women, are directly benefitting from the project. Moreover, the project aims to strengthen the management and budgeting capacities of more than 350 municipal decision-makers, 80 % of whom are women. Neither India nor Brazil have ...laws that effectively respond to sexism in online hate speech, in part because hate speech classifications in the law fail to comprehensively cover sexist speech. With only piecemeal legislation, the legal system ignores the violation of women's dignity and the fault lines of class, ethnicity, race, and caste that lead to gender-based hate speech. There are also definitional and jurisdictional challenges in applying the law to the online environment.#Recognize-Resist-Remedy will focus on institutional and individual transformation to combat sexist and misogynistic speech online in Brazil and India. This project will identify the main shortcomings that need to be addressed through legal reform. It will also harness the window of opportunity created by women speaking out in these environments to tackle the proliferation of sexist and misogynistic speech online. The aim of the project is to input recommendations into emerging policy processes, intermediary liability regimes, and governance frameworks for online content. The project will also work with young people to shift attitudes to demonstrate how deep change is possible.IT for Change (India) and InternetLab (Brazil) will work together on the research in both countries using an interdisciplinary critical feminist framework. They will use a mixed methods approach incorporating legal and policy analysis, field research, case studies analysis, participatory action research, and validation through a global experts meeting.

This project aims to support a...ccess to safe and gender-responsive education for girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 16, by addressing the urgent and growing needs they face in the security challenged northern and eastern regions of Burkina Faso. The project implements the Speed Schools approach, an intensive nine-month program which encompasses the first three years of primary school to allow out-of-school children to catch up to their peers, and effectively integrate them into the formal education system. This approach works to enable girls and boys to reintegrate into schools when they reopen, or allow them to continue their schooling at-level in temporary sites located in more secure parts of the country. Project activities include (1) conducting sensitization and face-to-face community outreach campaigns on the value of girls' right to education and protection, (2) providing training to teachers, (3) providing vouchers/cash transfer to households of highly vulnerable internally displaced people (IDPs) with adolescent girls transitioning to post-primary, including those with disabilities, and (4) rehabilitating latrines and establishing temporary learning spaces to address safety, inclusion, and IDP influx, according to rapid needs assessments. The following outcomes for this project are expected: (1) improved confidence, decision-making and resilience of girls and adolescent girls, including those with disabilities, as well as their families, so that they can identify and counteract gender-based barriers to education, (2) improved equitable and coordinated provision of innovative, safe, quality, gender-responsive, and evidence-based formal basic education for girls and adolescent girls, including those with disabilities, affected by insecurity, and (3) increased equitable access to safe, secure, quality, inclusive education and learning for girls and adolescent girls, including those with disabilities, affected by insecurity.

This project aims to offer sch...ool feeding activities to help systematically eliminate barriers related to educating students, especially girls, in high-priority regions of Burkina Faso, namely, Sahel, Boucle du Mouhoun, Nord, Centre-Nord and Est. This project works to improve access, retention, gender equality, equity and protection of children, particularly for girls. The project implements regular school feeding programs, as well as emergency school feeding programs to meet the growing needs of thousands of displaced persons and their host communities. The project also aims to distribute 3,300 tons of food to 60,000 students, mainly girls, to provide them with a hot meal. In addition, the project aims to serve breakfast in the morning with take-out rations to nearly 5,000 girls. The provision of take-home rations is intended to encourage parents to keep their daughters in school until the end of primary school, reducing, among other things, the risk of early marriage and pregnancy. Gender-based violence (GBV) re...mains a pervasive global problem, with 70% of women worldwide reporting at least one form of physical or psychological violence from a partner (UN Women). A 2018 report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime found that the likelihood of women being killed by relatives or intimate partners has increased by more than 10% since 2012. A Small Arms Survey in 2016 revealed that among the 25 countries with the highest rates of femicide in the world, 14 are in Latin America and the Caribbean. Calculating the economic impacts of GBV can be a valuable tool to encourage investment in prevention, particularly by untapped stakeholders such as the private sector. Most costing studies focus on the economic impacts of violence for individuals, societies, and the state, and less so for businesses. There is a need to capture indirect and intangible costs of various forms of violence, and to advocate for better data availability to ensure quality research and cross-country studies. This project aims to expand the evidence on the economic costs of GBV as a tool to leverage responses to prevent violence by the public and private sector. It will examine the prevalence and experiences of domestic violence for survivors, perpetrators, and witnesses, and will calculate how its spillover effects in the workplace hinder labour productivity, generating costs borne by enterprises. The goal of the project is to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of violence prevention and to promote investments in the workplace. The project, led by the University of San Martin de Porres (USMP) in Peru, will strengthen the technical capacities of teams to conduct research in Mexico and Colombia. These two countries have very competitive and business-sustainable economies that also report high incidences of GBV (44% and 66% respectively). New evidence in these two countries will add to the regional body of research built by USMP with support from the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay. In this way, IDRC is leveraging resources from other partners to expand this timely and relevant body of knowledge.

According to the World Health ...Organization (2017), one-third of women worldwide have experienced at least one form of gender-based violence in their lifetimes. In Colombia, 49,712 cases of domestic violence and 15,082 cases of sexual violence were reported in 2016 alone. However, it is important to note that less than 30% of gender-based violence incidents are reported in Colombia. This project is implemented in collaboration with the Fundación para la Educación Superior y el Desarrollo, a Colombia-based non-profit socioeconomic research organization. It aims to add value to national efforts by the Truth Commission, among other local actors, to understand and increase visibility of the prevalence and diverse kinds of sexual and gender-based violence. Using big data (open-source content, discussion blogs, and social media messages), this project seeks to capture and understand the perceptions and experiences of gender-based violence directly from citizens and inform the development of more responsive socio-economic programming. The research will also unearth some of the impacts of this violence (e.g. impacts on labour productivity, voice, agency) and further promote comprehensive policy efforts against gender-based violence.

OPENING DATA FOR INCLUSIVE PRA...CTICES IN MIGRATION, PUBLIC CONTRACTING, AND COMBATTING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Opening data for inclusive pra...ctices in migration, public contracting, and combatting gender-based violence
more
|
In Latin America, the increase...d release of open government data aims to strengthen the transparency and accountability of governments, build new business opportunities, and improve services for citizens. This project will explore innovative approaches for using and understanding public data to promote more inclusive government services and policies, address rights and disinformation challenges, and enhance gender equality. It will focus on three major areas: gender-based violence, assistance to migrants, and emergency procurement. To address the challenge of gender-based violence in Latin America, notably femicides, the project will examine how newly released official government data can be used to end violence against women through innovative approaches. With respect to migrants, growing civic unrest and massive economic disparities have led to a major increase in irregular migration in some countries. The project will begin to explore the challenges of taking a data-focused approach to supporting the needs of migrants and displaced peoples. This research will emphasize human rights, combatting misinformation and xenophobia, and facilitating better services for communities in need. Finally, the pandemic has caused an enormous increase in emergency procurement, which, when poorly managed, can negatively impact the delivery of crucial services and goods. The Open Contracting Partnership will support action research to make emergency procurement more inclusive, effective, and efficient in the context of COVID-19. Further, since only an estimated 1% of public contracts go to women-owned businesses, the research will explore key barriers and gaps for this group in bidding for public contracts. This project is part of the Open Data for Development (OD4D) program, a global network using data to promote social good. The OD4D network is funded by IDRC, Global Affairs Canada, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

This project aims to improve t...he realization of the right to safe, gender-responsive, quality learning for girls between the ages of 5 and 18, affected by the crisis and conflict in the Colombia-Venezuela border. This project responds to two major humanitarian crises facing Colombia, the migratory crisis caused by the arrival of millions of Venezuelan mixed migrants, and the internal armed conflict, which has existed for over 50 years and resulted in more than 8 million internally displaced people. Project activities include: (1) promoting community social and behaviour change communication and enrolment campaigns to promote girl's education, (2) supporting community clubs and safe spaces where out-of-school girls can build positive social life skills and facilitate a transition to education institutions, (3) providing training to girls on socio-emotional and like skills, gender equality, gender-based violence (GBV), participation and educational rights, (4) distributing essential resources needed to access education, such as menstrual hygiene management kits, (5) mapping referral routes to child protection and adolescent sexual and reproductive health services, (6) providing training to teachers on gender-responsive teaching and learning strategies, and (7) developing local and national public awareness campaigns to address xenophobia and discrimination. The project's primary beneficiaries are crisis-affected girls between the ages of 5 and 18, in and out-of-school, and at risk of not realizing their right to education and learning. This project expects to reach 30,403 direct beneficiaries, including 1,022 women, 746 men, and 28,635 children between the ages of 5 and 18 (of which 15,755 are girls).

The project aims to promote th...e protection, safety, empowerment and dignity of vulnerable Indigenous communities, especially women, in 9 municipalities of the Departments of Nariño and Antioquia in Colombia. These municipalities have been the most affected by the armed conflict, and present high rates of poverty, presence of illicit economies and institutional weakness. The project supports the priorities outlined in the sections of the Colombian Peace Agreement that grant official status to Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities. Project activities include: (1) providing training and working group sessions to improve Indigenous community protection mechanisms, which include the active participation of Indigenous women, (2) providing training and working group sessions to increase knowledge on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) within communities, and work to prevent and respond to SGBV, (3) organizing activities to strengthen the knowledge of state institutions, particularly the Ombudsman Office, on Indigenous rights, with a focus on the rights of Indigenous women, including survivors of the conflict, and disabled people, (4) supporting local and national advocacy for gender-responsive protection mechanisms, in line with the Colombian government's commitments in the Ethnic Chapter, and (5) strengthening the capacity of Indigenous women to participate in decision-making spaces.

This project aims to contribut...e to the implementation of the Ethnic Chapter of the Colombian Peace Agreement through a feminist lens. The project also works to address the increase in post- Peace Agreement violence, particularly sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) against Afro-Colombian women and girls in Barbacoas, Buenaventura, the Caribe, Norte de Cauca, and Tumaco regions. Project activities include: (1) conducting awareness raising activities on SGBV committed against Afro-Colombian women and girls, (2) increasing knowledge on services for survivors of SGBV, including domestic violence, through the publication and distribution of coronavirus (COVID-19) prevention and response materials, (3) conducting workshops to improve responses to SGBV by authorities and civil society operating in the focus regions of the project, (4) preparing and submitting to the Special Jurisdiction for Peace of an emblematic case on SGBV committed against Afro-Colombian women and girls, (5) holding community hearings on SGBV that promote healing and reconciliation, and (6) advocating for the continued implementation of the Ethnic Chapter through an Afro-Colombian feminist lens.
