The project aims to increase i...nclusive and sustainable economic growth in Burkina Faso. It is active in the Boucle du Mouhoun region, with particular emphasis on the communes of Bana and Kona. The project carries out integrated interventions, with activities that include electrifying 14 localities from the national electricity grid, promoting certified solar lamps in rural areas, and equipping 30 remote health centres with solar energy systems. In addition, the project contributes to create new jobs for women and young entrepreneurs in the region by promoting the development of businesses and economic activities enabled by electricity, as well as by access to financing and vocational training. The project also contributes to building an enabling environment for electrification and related economic development through the improvement of local governance, the establishment of electricity management structures, as well as technical assistance to local authorities, and support to the Ministry of Energy.

Support to Canadian Conference... on Global Health 2020
more
|
The Maternal and Child Health ...program (and its predecessor) have financially supported the Canadian Conference for Global Health (CCGH) run by the Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) for more than ten years. Since 2017 the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative has also contributed to that support. The theme for 2020 is Global health in a changing climate. Cross cutting themes include equity and innovation. Responding to the restrictions due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the conference will be held virtually October 19-22, 2020. It will have plenary sessions and symposia as well as workshops, special sessions, interactive forums, and oral and poster sessions. Participation fees for all low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) participants will be waived this year. CCGH is the major global health conference in Canada and is the primary space for Canadians working in global health to connect annually with each other and with colleagues around the world. CCGH engages health care practitioners, researchers, academics, educators, policy makers, and community advocates. Considering the delegates who attend, CCGH is an ideal location to showcase IMCHA's work. Supporting CCGH2020 will contribute to increased visibility of IMCHA, including through three confirmed dedicated concurrent sessions. The conference will also create a space to share other IMCHA products such as the legacy videos. Furthermore, IDRC is invited to speak at a plenary session.

This project is a component of... the Caribbean Disaster Risk Management Program, which seeks to increase the capacity of regional organizations, national governments and local communities in the Caribbean to respond to and manage natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods and to reduce their impact on the people of the region. Specifically, this project aims to reduce the medical impact that natural disasters and other emergencies can inflict on the people of the region. The project is managed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Working with national Ministries of Health, hospitals, clinics and national disaster offices PAHO's medical team uses its expertise to enhance the technical capacity of health sector practitioners to prepare for disasters, while providing them with new tools and technologies. Key activities include: (1) developing Caribbean adapted Health Sector Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation technical information and publications, (2) developing information systems on disaster risk reduction for the health sector, (3) providing targeted interventions for disaster resilient and more energy-efficient health care facilities, (4) training health human resources (women and men) in issues of disaster risk reduction and management, and (5) developing virtual emergency coordination platform for the Health Sector in the Caribbean.

RREP coordinating organization
|
This project establishes Resul...ts for Development (R4D) as the coordinating organization for the Rapid and Responsive Evidence Partnership (RREP). Jointly funded by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and IDRC, the partnership supports 11 country teams in low- and middle-income countries to promote and facilitate the use of evidence in decision-making by policymakers and stakeholders across sectors. The coordinating organization will promote collaboration and learning among RREP's diverse partners to amplify the impact of each team's work and generate lessons about evidence-informed policymaking. R4D will organize annual in-person workshops, mechanisms, and platforms for regular communication and learning between and among RREP members and communicate RREP's impacts and lessons to external audiences. R4D will also oversee strategic project management and visioning with the partnership and promote the partnership's longer-term sustainability.

CATALYSING LEADERSHIP TO IMPRO...VE HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR WOMEN, ADOLESCENTS, AND CHILDREN IN WEST AFRICA

|
This project aims to strengthe...n transformative leadership capacities in West Africa to encourage improved institutional and government use of health research and evidence in decision-making. Rather than focus only on individual leadership training, the project addresses leadership capacity at the individual, organizational, and system levels. This is based on the recognition that no individual alone can successfully tackle complex and challenging health problems.A comprehensive and innovative learning-by-doing program comprising face-to-face professional schools, on-the-ground mentoring, and small grants will support multi-sectoral teams in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, and Sierra Leone. The teams representing ministries of health, civil society, research, and media organizations will be able to assess with communities the priority concerns about health service delivery and to convene follow-up multi-stakeholder dialogues to address identified gaps. Civil society organizations will be able to use digital and social media platforms to further mobilize and leverage community support for advocacy around these issues. The media organizations, through a network of trained journalists, will be able to engage policymakers and hold them accountable regarding the use of information for policy development and implementation. Overall, the participating ministries of health will be able to lead the organization of multi-stakeholder policy dialogues, while strengthened research services within the ministries will be able to better link with researchers and stakeholders in academia and civil society. As part of a scaling strategy, the West African Health Organization will ensure regional validation and dissemination of lessons across the member states of the Economic Community of West African States. A collaboration of eight leading West African Francophone, Anglophone and regional research, advocacy, and policy institutions are building on previous joint efforts to develop and implement the program. This will help to consolidate and strengthen strategic working partnerships across the five countries.

STRENGTHENING AND SCALING UP M...EDICAL SIMULATION-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO SAVE LIVES IN AFRICA
more
|
Strengthening and scaling up m...edical simulation-based interventions to save lives in Africa
more
|
Neonatal and maternal mortalit...y remain major challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. A skilled health workforce is an important component of preventing maternal and neonatal deaths. Medical simulation plays a central role in the training and re-training of health professionals and in the retention of critical lifesaving skills. Although the benefits of simulation training are well-documented, the challenges and transformative potential of medical simulation as a teaching and learning tool in sub-Saharan Africa remains inadequately researched. Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Uganda, together with the Stavanger Acute Medicine Foundation for Education and Research in Norway and the University of Calgary established a medical simulation centre at MUST through the Simulation for Life initiative (Sim for Life). The program has grown into a nationally recognized centre of excellence for skills enhancement as a teaching facility for medical and nursing students and for in-service health professionals in East Africa. Building on the success of Sim for Life in Uganda, this project aims to incorporate and test innovative approaches to simulation-based learning among medical and nursing students and frontline health providers. It will also measure the impact of these approaches on maternal and newborn survival. The project seeks to expand simulation-based learning in East and West Africa through partnerships with medical and nursing education programs in northern and eastern Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria. It will also support equitable inter-professional collaboration through innovative simulation and peer-led training that addresses gender and social inequities in clinical care. An implementation research approach will help identify what prevents and facilitates the adoption, uptake, and effective use of simulation-based learning across five African settings. This will generate evidence and context-specific adaptations to better inform policy and practice with respect to skills retention and capacity building among health professionals, and decrease facility-specific maternal and neonatal mortality.

Registration of events, such a...s birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce, is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. These statistics provide policymakers and practitioners with the necessary evidence to design interventions and enact appropriate policies on maternal and child health. Many low- and middle-income countries, however, do not systematically collect such crucial information. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. In many cases, global norms, standards, tools, and good practices are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most. The project will establish the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems to provide information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and based at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and share information and resources in an open and collaborative electronic platform. It will also assist countries needing more direct support by facilitating the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR CIVIL... REGISTRATION AND VITAL STATISTICS (CRVS) SYSTEMS

Centre of Excellence for Civil... Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems

|

Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events - including birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce - is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. Integrated into existing health information systems, these statistics become valuable evidence, giving policymakers and practitioners the knowledge they need to review the circumstances leading to each maternal and child death, identify preventable factors, and take action where needed. However, such crucial information systems are lacking in many countries. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. Although global norms, standards, tools, and promising practices exist, they are not readily accessible to, and useable by, those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information by developing an open-access, electronic platform to make key resources readily accessible. It will facilitate the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility. The communications component of the project will allow the Centre of Excellence to carry out strategic communications and knowledge sharing activities that will help support its vision to be a globally recognized go-to place for resources and expertise for the development of evidence-based, effective, and integrated CRVS systems and operations. Communication activities will ensure broad dissemination and use of products collected, supported, and produced by the Centre of Excellence. Details will be elaborated in a Communications Strategy.

Support to Canadian Conference... on Global Health 2017, 2018, and 2019
more
|
IDRC's Maternal and Child Heal...th (MCH) program has supported the annual Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH) every year for more than ten years. Now in its 23rd consecutive year, the CCGH is the major global health conference in Canada. It focuses entirely on global health, is peer-reviewed, and is the primary space for Canadians working in global health to connect with each other and with stakeholders on an annual basis. The conference is a mix of plenary, workshops, oral and poster presentations, and it aims for a balance between theory and practice. It engages healthcare practitioners, researchers, academics, educators, policymakers, and community advocates from both formal and informal systems of care. Given the particular audience that attends these conferences, it is the ideal location to showcase IDRC and MCH's contributions to Canadian global health priorities. This grant to the Canadian Society of International Health will bring delegates from low and middle-income countries to the conference and will ensure that IDRC has the flexibility to organize specific panels and side events. Being a sponsor confers these privileges as well as the opportunity to provide program and theme input, to have a booth, and to be featured in promotional materials. The 2017 conference will be held in Ottawa from October 29–31. The theme, congruent with and inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals, is Leaving no one behind: Reflection for action in a changing world. The 2018 conference will be in Toronto and the theme is currently undecided. No specific details are yet known about the location or theme of the 2019 conference. The 2017 conference will be partially funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Outreach, communications and k...nowledge translation fund for promoting maternal, adolescent and child health research

|
The health of women, children,... and adolescents is a key development priority of the Canadian government and part of the global Sustainable Development Goals. In alignment with these global priorities, IDRC's Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program supports a rich portfolio of implementation research projects that work towards improving the quality, accessibility, and accountability of health services in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a focus on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems. MCH's approach has been to support LMIC researchers, policymakers, and implementers to influence national, regional, and global agendas through strategic meetings, dialogues, and by disseminating and using research results. The 2019-2020 financial year holds several crucial engagements where MCH and MCH-supported researchers can and should maximize opportunities to disseminate research findings, share thought leadership perspectives, and support emerging young researchers. This project aims to communicate the strategic priorities and contributions of the MCH program and to disseminate the research results of supported projects to produce greater visibility and reach for impact. A range of outreach opportunities and communication products will be developed through this fund to disseminate research results and to enable the strategic involvement of IDRC grantees in key events and conferences (e.g. Women Deliver) to promote knowledge exchange and to influence policies, practices, agendas, and funding priorities. Funds will also support strategic planning pieces. Collectively, the intent is to leverage appropriate opportunities that enable the mobilization of knowledge into policy processes.

The Sixth Global Symposium on ...Health Systems Research will be held in Dubai in November 2020. This is the only global conference that systematically brings together the international health systems and policy research (HSPR) community, with over 2,000 practitioners, policymakers, researchers, health advocates, journalists, and students from around the world. This grant continues IDRC's strategic decision of supporting the biennial Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (including meetings held in Montreaux in 2010, Beijing in 2012, Cape Town in 2014, Vancouver in 2016, and Liverpool in 2018). HSPR is fundamental to improving maternal, newborn, adolescent, and child health in low and middle-income countries (LMIC).The symposium offers an unparalleled opportunity to showcase results from several IDRC-supported initiatives, in particular those in Africa and the Middle East, interact with key health systems and policy stakeholders, understand new and emerging priorities in global health, and engage IDRC grantees and other LMIC voices in global debates.Working in collaboration with the Health Systems Global Association, IDRC will support the participation of at least 30 delegates from LMICs to the symposium. It will also facilitate communication, discussions, and exchanges via the translation of key documents and simultaneous interpretation in selected sessions. In addition, a survey of the capacity development needs of the HSPR community from LMICs will inform capacity building approaches to be explored at meetings during the symposium. The project will also improve access to new knowledge through the publication of a journal supplement focused on the theme/sub-themes discussed at the Dubai symposium, with at least 60-70% of the papers written by LMIC authors. As in previous years, it is expected that additional funding for the symposium will be provided by numerous other organizations and foundations in addition to IDRC.

The International Health Econo...mics Association (iHEA) aims to increase communication among health economists, foster a higher standard of debate in the application of economics to health and healthcare systems, and assist young researchers at the start of their careers. This grant aims to support the participation of at least 10 to 15 scholars (balance of genders) from low and middle-income countries (LMICs) in two iHEA congresses to be held in Switzerland in 2019 and in South Africa in 2020 respectively. The first congress involves the development and dissemination of open-access teaching material and webinars on at least three themes: maternal, child, and adolescent sexual and reproductive health, gender considerations in health economics analysis, and the economics of health information systems. The second congress involves strengthening the capacity of at least 10 LMIC research teams (with a focus on young/emerging researchers) conducting economic analysis and developing economic propositions for effective interventions to facilitate their sustainability and scaling up.This grant is contributing to increasing the visibility of IDRC and the importance of health economics in strengthening health systems for improved health outcomes, especially for women, children, and adolescents.

|

|

Led by IDRC, the Rapid and Res...ponsive Evidence Partnership (RREP – previously called PERLSS) is a jointly funded project with The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. RREP supports 11 country teams in low- and middle-income countries to promote and facilitate the use of research evidence to inform decision-making by policymakers and stakeholders across sectors. The RREP works towards this outcome by piloting and refining mechanisms for evidence-informed policymaking from the health sector to a broader range of sectors, strengthening organizations' capacity, networking, and learning at the country level, and supporting the community of practice in evidence-informed policymaking with relevant lessons and capacity. This project will support sharing and communication between RREP members and outside colleagues for greater visibility and impact. A range of outreach opportunities and communication products will be developed to highlight RREP's work, disseminate RREP research and learning results through translated and published syntheses, and enable the strategic involvement of RREP members in key events and conferences to promote knowledge exchange and inform policies, practices, agendas, and funding priorities in the area of evidence-informed policymaking. The funds will also support strategic planning pieces to position RREP as a sustainable and low- and middle-income-led community of practice contributing to amplifying knowledge for impact.
