Registration of events, such a...s birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce, is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. These statistics provide policymakers and practitioners with the necessary evidence to design interventions and enact appropriate policies on maternal and child health. Many low- and middle-income countries, however, do not systematically collect such crucial information. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. In many cases, global norms, standards, tools, and good practices are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most. The project will establish the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems to provide information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and based at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and share information and resources in an open and collaborative electronic platform. It will also assist countries needing more direct support by facilitating the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility.

Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events - including birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce - is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. Integrated into existing health information systems, these statistics become valuable evidence, giving policymakers and practitioners the knowledge they need to review the circumstances leading to each maternal and child death, identify preventable factors, and take action where needed. However, such crucial information systems are lacking in many countries. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. Although global norms, standards, tools, and promising practices exist, they are not readily accessible to, and useable by, those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information by developing an open-access, electronic platform to make key resources readily accessible. It will facilitate the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility. The communications component of the project will allow the Centre of Excellence to carry out strategic communications and knowledge sharing activities that will help support its vision to be a globally recognized go-to place for resources and expertise for the development of evidence-based, effective, and integrated CRVS systems and operations. Communication activities will ensure broad dissemination and use of products collected, supported, and produced by the Centre of Excellence. Details will be elaborated in a Communications Strategy.

BRIDGING THE GAP AMONG HEALTHC...ARE WORKERS AND DECISION-MAKERS THROUGH IMPROVED ROUTINE MEASUREMENT OF THE QUALITY OF MATERNAL AND NEWBORN CARE

Bridging the gap among healthc...are workers and decision-makers through improved routine measurement of the quality of maternal and newborn care
more
|
Progress in maternal, newborn,... and child health (MNCH) outcomes in low-income countries has been slow. In Tanzania, recent data suggests that although significant progress has been made in increasing coverage of essential services, the lack of data on quality of care is a major impediment to the achievement of the desired progress in MNCH outcomes.Through this project, researchers will build on insights gained from previous work to develop and validate a novel electronic tool for measuring the quality of maternal and newborn care. They will integrate the tool into the existing Health Management Information System (HMIS) in Tanzania, generate evidence on how a gender and equity perspective can be integrated in the routine assessment of quality of care, and identify the critical factors required for the scale-up and integration of the electronic tool into routine use. This project will build on the existing partnership between Ifakara Health Institute (Tanzania), the SickKids Hospital's Centre for Global Child Health (Canada), and the Tanzania Ministry of Health. The proposed project is closely aligned with several Tanzanian government-led strategies to improve maternal, neonatal, and child health outcomes, including the Big Results Now initiative. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

STRENGTHENING AND SCALING UP M...EDICAL SIMULATION-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO SAVE LIVES IN AFRICA
more
|
Strengthening and scaling up m...edical simulation-based interventions to save lives in Africa
more
|
Neonatal and maternal mortalit...y remain major challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. A skilled health workforce is an important component of preventing maternal and neonatal deaths. Medical simulation plays a central role in the training and re-training of health professionals and in the retention of critical lifesaving skills. Although the benefits of simulation training are well-documented, the challenges and transformative potential of medical simulation as a teaching and learning tool in sub-Saharan Africa remains inadequately researched. Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Uganda, together with the Stavanger Acute Medicine Foundation for Education and Research in Norway and the University of Calgary established a medical simulation centre at MUST through the Simulation for Life initiative (Sim for Life). The program has grown into a nationally recognized centre of excellence for skills enhancement as a teaching facility for medical and nursing students and for in-service health professionals in East Africa. Building on the success of Sim for Life in Uganda, this project aims to incorporate and test innovative approaches to simulation-based learning among medical and nursing students and frontline health providers. It will also measure the impact of these approaches on maternal and newborn survival. The project seeks to expand simulation-based learning in East and West Africa through partnerships with medical and nursing education programs in northern and eastern Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria. It will also support equitable inter-professional collaboration through innovative simulation and peer-led training that addresses gender and social inequities in clinical care. An implementation research approach will help identify what prevents and facilitates the adoption, uptake, and effective use of simulation-based learning across five African settings. This will generate evidence and context-specific adaptations to better inform policy and practice with respect to skills retention and capacity building among health professionals, and decrease facility-specific maternal and neonatal mortality.

TANZANIA DEMOGRAPHIC HEALTH SU...RVEY

Tanzania Demographic Health Su...rvey
more
|
National household surveys, pa...rticularly the Tanzania Demographic Health Survey (TDHS), are the main source for data and knowledge on the health, nutrition, gender equality and demographics of the Tanzanian population. The TDHS is the authoritative source for data on fertility, contraceptive use, maternal and child mortality, the prevalence of childhood illnesses, women's decision making, sexual and gender based violence (SGBV), and gender gaps in the utilization of health services. The results of the TDHS are available over regular intervals (every five years) and provide reliable and robust information to the Government of Tanzania, development partners, and stakeholders. This information is vital for effective and efficient planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health, nutrition and gender equality interventions, including those in maternal, newborn, adolescent and child health (MNCAH) and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The TDHS's age- and sex-disaggregated data are critical for determining where further efforts and focus are needed, in order to apply a needs and evidence based approach to Canada's health programming. For Global Affairs Canada, the TDHS is the key source of data for tracking and reporting on country-level results related to Canada's investments in the health and well-being of women and girls, and for guiding future gender equality, health and nutrition (including SRHR) programming. / TBD

|
|

RREP COORDINATING ORGANIZATION
|
RREP coordinating organization
|
This project establishes Resul...ts for Development (R4D) as the coordinating organization for the Rapid and Responsive Evidence Partnership (RREP). Jointly funded by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and IDRC, the partnership supports 11 country teams in low- and middle-income countries to promote and facilitate the use of evidence in decision-making by policymakers and stakeholders across sectors. The coordinating organization will promote collaboration and learning among RREP's diverse partners to amplify the impact of each team's work and generate lessons about evidence-informed policymaking. R4D will organize annual in-person workshops, mechanisms, and platforms for regular communication and learning between and among RREP members and communicate RREP's impacts and lessons to external audiences. R4D will also oversee strategic project management and visioning with the partnership and promote the partnership's longer-term sustainability.

Gender Responsive WASH Assista...nce to Conflict-Affected Populations in the Gaza Strip 2020-2022./Assistance WASH sensible au genre pour les populations touchées par le conflit dans la bande de Gaza

|
This project is part of the 20...20 United Nations-coordinated Humanitarian Response Plan for the West Bank and Gaza Strip and responds to the Ministerial priority of humanitarian action to reach the poorest and most vulnerable. Projects under this appeal help to reduce the vulnerability of Palestinians, especially women and children, affected by the ongoing crisis. In line with humanitarian principles, projects are selected based on priority needs, but special attention will be paid to choosing projects that support gender equality, women and girls, and address sexual and reproductive health and rights. Specifically, this project addresses urgent lifesaving water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) needs of conflict-affected populations in Gaza through the rehabilitation of key WASH infrastructure in health facilities and schools, while simultaneously working with community leaders, decision makers, women, men, boys and girls to increase knowledge of, and improve behaviour around gender-sensitive water and sanitation practices, benefiting 358,162 individuals directly, of which 176,115 are female and 182,047 are male. The key activities of this project are: 1) Conducting gender-sensitive mapping of water facilities and water quality, and implementing emergency construction work targeting 35 desalination plants in public facilities, 2) Conducting gender-sensitive assessments in public schools, constructing or rehabilitating toilets in public schools, rehabilitating sanitation facilities in public hospitals, and by building storm water harvesting units in schools, 3) Providing gender-responsive hygiene promotion training for students and staff in public schools, providing cleaning items and gender-sensitive hygiene kits in public schools, and by implementing gender-sensitive hygiene promotion community projects, and, 4) Providing training on safe water handling practices to community members, providing training on operation and maintenance of WASH facilities for WASH technical operators, and disseminating contextualized, gender responsive WASH findings to key decision makers in Gaza.
