STRENGTHENING AND SCALING UP M...EDICAL SIMULATION-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO SAVE LIVES IN AFRICA
more
|
Strengthening and scaling up m...edical simulation-based interventions to save lives in Africa
more
|
Neonatal and maternal mortalit...y remain major challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. A skilled health workforce is an important component of preventing maternal and neonatal deaths. Medical simulation plays a central role in the training and re-training of health professionals and in the retention of critical lifesaving skills. Although the benefits of simulation training are well-documented, the challenges and transformative potential of medical simulation as a teaching and learning tool in sub-Saharan Africa remains inadequately researched. Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Uganda, together with the Stavanger Acute Medicine Foundation for Education and Research in Norway and the University of Calgary established a medical simulation centre at MUST through the Simulation for Life initiative (Sim for Life). The program has grown into a nationally recognized centre of excellence for skills enhancement as a teaching facility for medical and nursing students and for in-service health professionals in East Africa. Building on the success of Sim for Life in Uganda, this project aims to incorporate and test innovative approaches to simulation-based learning among medical and nursing students and frontline health providers. It will also measure the impact of these approaches on maternal and newborn survival. The project seeks to expand simulation-based learning in East and West Africa through partnerships with medical and nursing education programs in northern and eastern Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria. It will also support equitable inter-professional collaboration through innovative simulation and peer-led training that addresses gender and social inequities in clinical care. An implementation research approach will help identify what prevents and facilitates the adoption, uptake, and effective use of simulation-based learning across five African settings. This will generate evidence and context-specific adaptations to better inform policy and practice with respect to skills retention and capacity building among health professionals, and decrease facility-specific maternal and neonatal mortality.

RREP COORDINATING ORGANIZATION
|
RREP coordinating organization
|
This project establishes Resul...ts for Development (R4D) as the coordinating organization for the Rapid and Responsive Evidence Partnership (RREP). Jointly funded by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and IDRC, the partnership supports 11 country teams in low- and middle-income countries to promote and facilitate the use of evidence in decision-making by policymakers and stakeholders across sectors. The coordinating organization will promote collaboration and learning among RREP's diverse partners to amplify the impact of each team's work and generate lessons about evidence-informed policymaking. R4D will organize annual in-person workshops, mechanisms, and platforms for regular communication and learning between and among RREP members and communicate RREP's impacts and lessons to external audiences. R4D will also oversee strategic project management and visioning with the partnership and promote the partnership's longer-term sustainability.

STRENGTHENING ACCESS TO QUALIT...Y COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH EDUCATION IN THE GAMBIA

Strengthening access to qualit...y comprehensive health education in The Gambia
more
|
Youth make up 32% of the popul...ation in The Gambia, but observations indicate that they lack access to quality information and services on preventing and protecting themselves against sexual and reproductive health infections and unwanted pregnancies. The Gambia has comprehensive policy frameworks about health education in place to empower adolescents to make safe and informed choices and to exercise their rights, but there is limited information about how these policies are being implemented. There is a need to generate evidence on the delivery and impact of existing comprehensive health education and contribute to its improvement. The overall aim of this study is to understand the underlying factors that affect the implementation of comprehensive health education for adolescents in and out of school. The project will be implemented in Kanifing, the local government area with the country's densest population. Multi-stage sampling and a mixed-methods approach will inform the design and implementation of a package of interventions. This package will test effective means of engaging with relevant government authorities, civil society, non-government service providers, youth organizations, and key community stakeholders, to open up dialogues around sexual and reproductive health and rights. The study is expected to identify and address the factors and limitations of comprehensive health education and its institutionalization in community and school-based programs to improve access to quality health information and related services.

Rural Sanitation and Hygiene M...arket Development in Northern Ghana/Développement du marché de l'assainissement et de l'hygiène en milieu rural au Nord du Ghana
more
|
This project aims to reduce th...e burden of sanitation-related diseases in Northern Ghana, by introducing much-needed supply chain innovations to improve the availability, affordability and sustained use of appropriate sanitation and hygiene solutions for Ghanaian households. This project continues to advance the work of previously funded RuSHING projects, but with a particular focus on activities aimed at limiting the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Project activities include: (1) installing 100 hand-washing stations in strategic public spaces, (2) engaging 100 monitors to ensure cleanliness of each station and raise awareness of users on how COVID-19 spreads, and (3) broadcasting of public service announcements on 25 radio stations across project areas. This project seeks to facilitate the adoption of improved sanitation and hand hygiene behaviors for rural Ghanaians, who do not have access to improved sanitation in their homes. This project also works to develop a sanitation market through the direct facilitation of design, production, and sale of toilets across Ghana's northern regions.

CATALYSING LEADERSHIP TO IMPRO...VE HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR WOMEN, ADOLESCENTS, AND CHILDREN IN WEST AFRICA
more
|
Catalysing leadership to impro...ve health outcomes for women, adolescents, and children in West Africa
more
|
This project aims to strengthe...n transformative leadership capacities in West Africa to encourage improved institutional and government use of health research and evidence in decision-making. Rather than focus only on individual leadership training, the project addresses leadership capacity at the individual, organizational, and system levels. This is based on the recognition that no individual alone can successfully tackle complex and challenging health problems.A comprehensive and innovative learning-by-doing program comprising face-to-face professional schools, on-the-ground mentoring, and small grants will support multi-sectoral teams in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, and Sierra Leone. The teams representing ministries of health, civil society, research, and media organizations will be able to assess with communities the priority concerns about health service delivery and to convene follow-up multi-stakeholder dialogues to address identified gaps. Civil society organizations will be able to use digital and social media platforms to further mobilize and leverage community support for advocacy around these issues. The media organizations, through a network of trained journalists, will be able to engage policymakers and hold them accountable regarding the use of information for policy development and implementation. Overall, the participating ministries of health will be able to lead the organization of multi-stakeholder policy dialogues, while strengthened research services within the ministries will be able to better link with researchers and stakeholders in academia and civil society. As part of a scaling strategy, the West African Health Organization will ensure regional validation and dissemination of lessons across the member states of the Economic Community of West African States. A collaboration of eight leading West African Francophone, Anglophone and regional research, advocacy, and policy institutions are building on previous joint efforts to develop and implement the program. This will help to consolidate and strengthen strategic working partnerships across the five countries.

Technical support for universa...l health coverage pilots in Karnataka and Kerala
more
|
This project will provide evid...ence-based support to implement universal health coverage (UHC) pilot activities in two Indian states: Kerala and Karnataka. The project team will provide technical assistance to these early adopter states to assist with UHC intervention activities. The project aims to consolidate the Public Health Foundation of India's earlier achievements. The foundation responded to calls from Indian states to support the implementation of UHC, and spent three years engaging and collaborating with state and district officials. They provided technical assistance to help officials design and develop their universal health coverage action plans based on an extensive baseline assessment and top health priorities. This project will help strengthen knowledge and skills at the state and district levels to implement universal health coverage program action plans in Kerala and Karnataka. The project is expected to: -support officials to take action on recommended interventions-translate research and analysis into actionable knowledge -document intervention activities, timelines, responsibilities, and outcomes -deliver a universal health-coverage monitoring framework at the district level-create a toolkit and a model to adapt and scale up the project's methodology to other development contexts

|
|

|
|

STRENGTHENING RESEARCH QUALITY..., LEADERSHIP, NETWORKING, AND COMMUNICATIONS OF HEALTH IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH PROJECTS IN WEST AFRICA AND MENA

|
Strengthening research quality..., leadership, networking, and communications of health implementation research projects in West Africa and MENA
more
|
Maternal, child, and adolescen...t health, including sexual and reproductive health, are critical to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities across West Africa, the Middle East, and North Africa. Despite some improvement in health outcomes in these regions, progress has been uneven and growing economic and political challenges are putting that progress to the test. Research on implementation is being increasingly used to understand how certain health interventions work in the field. Results can contribute to efforts to address issues such as economic viability, potential for scale-up, meaningful engagement with community groups, means of limiting gender-based or other socio-economic driven discrimination, and improving distribution channels, among other outcomes. IDRC, working in partnership with the American University of Beirut, will be supporting implementation research projects in two thematic areas: adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and health information systems. Projects will include support activities to strengthen individual and cohort-wide research quality, leadership, networking, and communications. Starting from the early stages of the grants, various support and learning activities will accompany the projects throughout their implementation. This will include workshops, ongoing provision of technical advice, and support for new strategies, processes, and activities to improve research quality, leadership potential, networking opportunities, strategic communications, and development of joint knowledge products over the course of the projects. Collectively, these activities will help optimize the potential for reach, uptake, and influence at local, national, and regional levels. By creating opportunities and spaces to gather, learn, debate, reflect, and improve, it is expected that the outcomes will include strengthened individual capacities and peer learning, stronger linkages within the cohort and expanded networks beyond, greater reach and relevance through the development of joint knowledge products, and more effective and nuanced influence strategies and related activities towards greater sustained positive impact.

|

ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS AN...D IMPACT OF INNOVATIVE LEARNING MODALITIES AND CAPACITY STRENGTHENING APPROACHES IN FRAGILE LMIC SETTINGS

Assessing the effectiveness an...d impact of innovative learning modalities and capacity strengthening approaches in fragile LMIC settings
more
|
Global health challenges in th...e Middle East and North Africa and across the Global South become even more complex in contexts of fragility. Healthcare providers are a cornerstone of the response to these challenges. Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 and other goals related to health and well-being will not be possible without a competent and motivated health workforce that can provide quality access to health services for all. The current health workforce shortage disproportionately affects women, children, and other groups in contexts of fragility. There is a pressing need to support innovative approaches to strengthening the health workforce in these contexts, and to strengthen how research is conducted and socialized to ensure successful local models and experiences are captured and shared widely. This project aims to examine different approaches to strengthening the global health workforce by working with researchers and leaders in fragile contexts in the Middle East and North Africa. The project will explore how challenges such as the retention of qualified health workers, a dearth of localized training material for fragile contexts, poor incentive structures, and limited mentorship and career development opportunities are being addressed. Innovative delivery models, locally driven content generation, and enhanced attention to gender equality and inclusion will be examined to understand how they influence the quality and retention of the health workforce in fragile settings. Where relevant, the case study design will compare and contrast differences within and across cases at the individual, community, and systems level. The case studies will also apply a gendered lens to understand the power dynamics that may be at play and affecting the quality and retention of female health workers. Although research is based in the Middle East and North Africa, the study will be grounded in the broader needs of the Global South and its findings will be shared with regional and global audiences. Expected outcomes from the project include improved knowledge about capacity building, approaches and models for fragile contexts in low and middle-income countries, increased access to localized, affordable, and quality health education among vulnerable communities, a strengthened community of practice with localized skills to meet existing global health challenges in these contexts, and an improved body of localized knowledge from humanitarian workers and other health workers.

|
The Montreal-based Internation...al Association of Adolescent Health (IAAH) is a major non-governmental organization working to promote the health and well-being of adolescents at a global level. IAAH's third annual conference in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) will strengthen and promote adolescent health and well-being and build capacity related to adolescent health by sharing research and knowledge in this area. IAAH's two previous conferences in MENA were well-attended by global leaders and experts in adolescent health from 36 countries and 12 international organizations. IAAH and the Jordan-based Royal Health Awareness Society, in collaboration with the School Health Department of the Ministry of Health of Jordan, will host the third annual regional conference in Amman, Jordan, in December 2019. The two-day conference will include plenary presentations, keynote lectures, debates, seminars and symposia, workshops, and interactive sessions with young people. The speakers will represent government, healthcare professionals, academia, and civil society, including adolescent health experts. The sessions will ensure a high level of interaction, reflection, and engagement, and will address clinical perspectives as well as policy and advocacy strategies for improving adolescent health in the region. Prior to the conference, a workshop will be held to train approximately 30 health workers from the region, mainly junior physicians, in the area of adolescent health (particularly in the realm of research).

Delivery of public services in... ethnic minority states: Gender equality and decentralization in Myanmar
more
|
In 2017, to sustain Myanmar's ...democratic transition, IDRC and Global Affairs Canada launched an initiative, Knowledge for Democracy Myanmar, to nurture meaningful engagement and promote economic growth that benefits women and men, regardless of ethnicity. Working with other development partners, the initiative targets diverse and complementary entry points to strengthen analytical thinking and research capacity through capacity development for individuals, including emerging researchers, civil society, and policy makers. It also targets engagement and collaboration, through roundtables, conferences, workshops, and other forms of policy dialogue, and capacity development for institutions, providing support for think tanks and government. Finally, the initiative provides funding for research projects on the topics of inclusive democratic governance and economic development. This project will examine the factors that affect the delivery of public services (education, health, and security) in five ethnic minority states in Myanmar (Kayin, Kachin, Magway, Rakhine, and Chin), which represent Myanmar's diverse ethnic composition. It will also examine factors that affect conflict resolution. It will look at ways to improve the coverage and quality of these services in a more inclusive and decentralized Myanmar. In particular, the project will address the new fiscal and administrative state-level powers to provide education, health and security under the current decentralization initiative, and whether they use a gender-sensitive approach, the strategic deployment of resources and personnel to address women's concerns and set priorities for reform, especially within the security sector, and local communities' expectations in education, health and security, with a focus to identify gender-specific priorities of men and women.Project leaders and staff from the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs (Asia Centre) and the newly-created Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security (MIPS) will collaborate in the design and implementation of the research in all five Myanmar states. An explicit objective of this partnership is to develop the analytical capacity of MIPS as a new research centre in the country.

CATALYSING LEADERSHIP TO IMPRO...VE HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR WOMEN, ADOLESCENTS, AND CHILDREN IN WEST AFRICA

|

|
|

|
|

|

|
