CATALYSING LEADERSHIP TO IMPRO...VE HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR WOMEN, ADOLESCENTS, AND CHILDREN IN WEST AFRICA
more
|
Catalysing leadership to impro...ve health outcomes for women, adolescents, and children in West Africa
more
|
This project aims to strengthe...n transformative leadership capacities in West Africa to encourage improved institutional and government use of health research and evidence in decision-making. Rather than focus only on individual leadership training, the project addresses leadership capacity at the individual, organizational, and system levels. This is based on the recognition that no individual alone can successfully tackle complex and challenging health problems.A comprehensive and innovative learning-by-doing program comprising face-to-face professional schools, on-the-ground mentoring, and small grants will support multi-sectoral teams in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, and Sierra Leone. The teams representing ministries of health, civil society, research, and media organizations will be able to assess with communities the priority concerns about health service delivery and to convene follow-up multi-stakeholder dialogues to address identified gaps. Civil society organizations will be able to use digital and social media platforms to further mobilize and leverage community support for advocacy around these issues. The media organizations, through a network of trained journalists, will be able to engage policymakers and hold them accountable regarding the use of information for policy development and implementation. Overall, the participating ministries of health will be able to lead the organization of multi-stakeholder policy dialogues, while strengthened research services within the ministries will be able to better link with researchers and stakeholders in academia and civil society. As part of a scaling strategy, the West African Health Organization will ensure regional validation and dissemination of lessons across the member states of the Economic Community of West African States. A collaboration of eight leading West African Francophone, Anglophone and regional research, advocacy, and policy institutions are building on previous joint efforts to develop and implement the program. This will help to consolidate and strengthen strategic working partnerships across the five countries.

STRENGTHENING THE ETHICS OF CL...INICAL RESEARCH FOR PARTICIPANTS IN EBOLA AFFECTED COUNTRIES

|
Strengthening the ethics of cl...inical research for participants in Ebola affected countries
more
|
As confirmed by the WHO's guid...elines on risk communication and community engagement issued for the 2018 Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), research is a critical component to both outbreak control measures and future preparedness activities. However, many of the adults recruited to these future studies have limited literacy and no prior exposure to the concept of research. These vulnerabilities are heightened during a public health emergency, particularly when the local context is rife with fear, confusion, and misinformation, and when international standards of research ethics are not always upheld. Heavily informed by the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, this project aims to support the ethical conduct of research in Ebola-affected countries. A multidisciplinary team of Canadian and African researchers will work with researchers, ethicists, Ebola survivor groups, and civil society leaders to characterize the key considerations and tested approaches for clear research communications with limited-literacy adults in sub-Saharan Africa. The team will then develop and pilot a toolbox of open-access and multilingual resources for the individuals and communities approached to participate in research. This ethics primer toolbox will be developed using a participatory research approach through community consultations and community piloting of resources and prototypes, and will be shared with an extensive network of project partners in academia, civil society, and patient advocacy groups, along with ethics oversight bodies in the DRC, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. This project is funded by the Rapid Research Fund for Ebola Virus Disease Outbreaks, a CA$1.5 million initiative that was mobilized and co-funded by IDRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The Fund supports four collaborative projects jointly led by Canadian and African researchers.

STRENGTHENING AND SCALING UP M...EDICAL SIMULATION-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO SAVE LIVES IN AFRICA

|
Strengthening and scaling up m...edical simulation-based interventions to save lives in Africa
more
|
Neonatal and maternal mortalit...y remain major challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. A skilled health workforce is an important component of preventing maternal and neonatal deaths. Medical simulation plays a central role in the training and re-training of health professionals and in the retention of critical lifesaving skills. Although the benefits of simulation training are well-documented, the challenges and transformative potential of medical simulation as a teaching and learning tool in sub-Saharan Africa remains inadequately researched. Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Uganda, together with the Stavanger Acute Medicine Foundation for Education and Research in Norway and the University of Calgary established a medical simulation centre at MUST through the Simulation for Life initiative (Sim for Life). The program has grown into a nationally recognized centre of excellence for skills enhancement as a teaching facility for medical and nursing students and for in-service health professionals in East Africa. Building on the success of Sim for Life in Uganda, this project aims to incorporate and test innovative approaches to simulation-based learning among medical and nursing students and frontline health providers. It will also measure the impact of these approaches on maternal and newborn survival. The project seeks to expand simulation-based learning in East and West Africa through partnerships with medical and nursing education programs in northern and eastern Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria. It will also support equitable inter-professional collaboration through innovative simulation and peer-led training that addresses gender and social inequities in clinical care. An implementation research approach will help identify what prevents and facilitates the adoption, uptake, and effective use of simulation-based learning across five African settings. This will generate evidence and context-specific adaptations to better inform policy and practice with respect to skills retention and capacity building among health professionals, and decrease facility-specific maternal and neonatal mortality.

The purpose of this project is... to improve the health care systems for and by women and those most in need. The goal is to improve citizen engagement and to make public institutions more responsive to people's needs and rights through a technological platform. The initiative favours targeted zones (urban and rural): (1) citizen and health officers freely expressing their opinions about their health system using new technologies, including mobile applications, text message platforms, blogs and wikis; (2) use of helpful and useable data by local institutions and by national decision makers to improve health systems and make them more democratic; (3) improved advocacy to make the health systems in the three countries better adapted to the needs of women and those most in need. The project's activities include the following: (1) conducting social integration activities and awareness campaigns to empower the people, notably women and those most in need, in terms of using technology; (2) training local institutions so they can collect, analyze and transmit information regarding health services to the people; (3) developing technologies (mobile application for smartphones and tablets, automated information-sharing module) to allow users to express their opinions about the health system, to allow staff to register complaints and to allow decision makers to better understand the people's needs and grievances; (4) developing a text message platform that allows people to access information on the health system's services and access, including rights to health; (5) training and coaching non-governmental organizations and public institutions to facilitate policy dialogue in order to provide better access to health services that meet people's needs.

|
Registration of events, such a...s birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce, is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. These statistics provide policymakers and practitioners with the necessary evidence to design interventions and enact appropriate policies on maternal and child health. Many low- and middle-income countries, however, do not systematically collect such crucial information. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. In many cases, global norms, standards, tools, and good practices are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most. The project will establish the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems to provide information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and based at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and share information and resources in an open and collaborative electronic platform. It will also assist countries needing more direct support by facilitating the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility.

Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events - including birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce - is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. Integrated into existing health information systems, these statistics become valuable evidence, giving policymakers and practitioners the knowledge they need to review the circumstances leading to each maternal and child death, identify preventable factors, and take action where needed. However, such crucial information systems are lacking in many countries. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. Although global norms, standards, tools, and promising practices exist, they are not readily accessible to, and useable by, those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information by developing an open-access, electronic platform to make key resources readily accessible. It will facilitate the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility. The communications component of the project will allow the Centre of Excellence to carry out strategic communications and knowledge sharing activities that will help support its vision to be a globally recognized go-to place for resources and expertise for the development of evidence-based, effective, and integrated CRVS systems and operations. Communication activities will ensure broad dissemination and use of products collected, supported, and produced by the Centre of Excellence. Details will be elaborated in a Communications Strategy.

Centre of Excellence for CRVS ...Systems Activity Budget Line: Building a Knowledge Base and Contributing to Global Tools and Standards
more
|
It will facilitate exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility. This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to build a knowledge base by mapping and consolidating existing (yet scattered) evidence, as well as developing state-of-the art tools, resources, and synthesis products on CRVS systems for use by countries and other CRVS stakeholders. This includes commissioning case studies to document the various processes that countries are undertaking to develop and integrate CRVS systems components into investment cases. The Centre of Excellence will also actively collect and synthesize lessons and good practices to strengthen CRVS systems.

COMMUNICATING THE CONTRIBUTION...S OF THINK TANKS TO THE HEALTH SDGS
more
|
Communicating the contribution...s of Think Tanks to the health SDGs
more
|
The Think Health Initiative en...courages the involvement of policy research institutions in the implementation and monitoring of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters linkages between the local, national, and global efforts of these institutions. It has already gained momentum through a series of consultations and engagements with strategic stakeholders. This project will allow the Initiative to broaden its engagement process and to produce, disseminate, and translate the multiple knowledge products that will anchor that engagement process. While administratively this is a standalone project, it is linked conceptually and in purpose to the other Think health Initiative consultations and pilot projects. The knowledge products produced will help to solidify and expand the joint ownership and involvement of existing strategic collaborating stakeholders known as the THINK_SDG network. Crucially, these knowledge products will also be used to engage and attract potential funding partners. Given the variety of stakeholders being targeted, the knowledge products will be a mix of academic papers, blogs, and social media contributions. The greatest emphasis will be on high-quality academic papers, given the high impact that the THINK_SDG network members are capable of attracting via this medium. Among the products to be supported under this initiative are four open-access articles in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), initiating a BMJ mini-series on the contribution of policy research institutions and the health-related SDGs. Other products include a special issue of the journal Global Health Governance that features eight regional papers describing the status of health-related SDG implementation in each region. This will provide an important and unprecedented global snapshot of the status of SDG implementation around the world, halfway through the first 1000 days of SDG implementation. The project will also involve the production and open-access dissemination of up to four blogs to be featured on the websites of the BMJ, the Think Tank Initiative (TTI), IDRC, and/or the THINK_SDG initiative hosted by the Graduate Institute in Geneva.

Support to Canadian Conference... on Global Health 2017, 2018, and 2019
more
|
IDRC's Maternal and Child Heal...th (MCH) program has supported the annual Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH) every year for more than ten years. Now in its 23rd consecutive year, the CCGH is the major global health conference in Canada. It focuses entirely on global health, is peer-reviewed, and is the primary space for Canadians working in global health to connect with each other and with stakeholders on an annual basis. The conference is a mix of plenary, workshops, oral and poster presentations, and it aims for a balance between theory and practice. It engages healthcare practitioners, researchers, academics, educators, policymakers, and community advocates from both formal and informal systems of care. Given the particular audience that attends these conferences, it is the ideal location to showcase IDRC and MCH's contributions to Canadian global health priorities. This grant to the Canadian Society of International Health will bring delegates from low and middle-income countries to the conference and will ensure that IDRC has the flexibility to organize specific panels and side events. Being a sponsor confers these privileges as well as the opportunity to provide program and theme input, to have a booth, and to be featured in promotional materials. The 2017 conference will be held in Ottawa from October 29–31. The theme, congruent with and inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals, is Leaving no one behind: Reflection for action in a changing world. The 2018 conference will be in Toronto and the theme is currently undecided. No specific details are yet known about the location or theme of the 2019 conference. The 2017 conference will be partially funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

|
The health of women, children,... and adolescents is a key development priority of the Canadian government and part of the global Sustainable Development Goals. In alignment with these global priorities, IDRC's Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program supports a rich portfolio of implementation research projects that work towards improving the quality, accessibility, and accountability of health services in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a focus on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems. MCH's approach has been to support LMIC researchers, policymakers, and implementers to influence national, regional, and global agendas through strategic meetings, dialogues, and by disseminating and using research results. The 2019-2020 financial year holds several crucial engagements where MCH and MCH-supported researchers can and should maximize opportunities to disseminate research findings, share thought leadership perspectives, and support emerging young researchers. This project aims to communicate the strategic priorities and contributions of the MCH program and to disseminate the research results of supported projects to produce greater visibility and reach for impact. A range of outreach opportunities and communication products will be developed through this fund to disseminate research results and to enable the strategic involvement of IDRC grantees in key events and conferences (e.g. Women Deliver) to promote knowledge exchange and to influence policies, practices, agendas, and funding priorities. Funds will also support strategic planning pieces. Collectively, the intent is to leverage appropriate opportunities that enable the mobilization of knowledge into policy processes.

Food, Environment and Health P...rogram Evaluation
more
|
IDRC's Food, Environment and H...ealth (FEH) program seeks to improve the health of low- and middle-income country populations by generating evidence, innovations, and multi-sector public policies that reduce the health and economic burdens of preventable chronic and infectious diseases. The program's central priority is to curb rising rates of chronic diseases by influencing shifts in local food systems towards the sustainable adoption of healthier diets. This is being achieved by investing in solutions-oriented research and strengthening leadership of institutions and scientists in the Global South, as well as fostering multi-disciplinary collaboration and partnership building for greater reach and impact. This project supports a summative evaluation of the FEH program from 2015-2019. It will help IDRC capture the program's progress and learning during this period and assess the significance of its contributions over the program's first cycle. The evaluation will be guided by a number of key questions focusing on the program strategy and outcomes, including implementation, knowledge translation, contributions to research capacity, and lessons learned. Findings of the evaluation will be used to guide future FEH programming and to articulate results to key stakeholders.

SUPPORTING METRICS WORKING GRO...UP OF LANCET-SWEDISH INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL HEALTH TRANSFORMATION COMMISSION ON PEACE, JUSTICE AND GENDER EQUALITY
more
|
Supporting metrics working gro...up of Lancet-Swedish Institute for Global Health Transformation Commission on Peace, Justice and Gender Equality
more
|
Better integration of the Sust...ainable Development Goals (SDGs) is needed across some key health and health-related goals. A Lancet-Swedish Institute for Global Health Transformation (SIGHT) Commission was formed to integrate evidence on SDG 3 (health), SDG 5 (gender), and SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions), to associate greater gender and health equity with more peaceful societies. The Commission's timeframe is five years, but the bulk of the evidence will be generated in the first two years. This project will support the Canadian-led Lancet-SIGHT Commission working group on metrics and measurement. The main work of the metrics group will be to gather/identify relevant metrics or indicators that measure gender equity, health equity, and social fragility/stability/peace in order to understand the pathways that link gender equity and health equity to peace and security. The idea is to determine which questions could be answered through existing data and which questions require better metrics/indicators. Finally, the working group will select a number of research questions to analyze the validity of these metrics through country case studies that will include analysis of how gender equity, health equity, and health system performance affect social and political fragility.Project outcomes will include reports on the analysis of these metrics to provide the Commission with a stronger empirical evidence base for its findings and conclusions. The outcome of this working group will have important implications in terms of understanding the dynamic interaction among the selected SDGs and how to build data and metrics for national and global planning to achieve the SDGs.

Equity and Social Determinants... of Health in Health Information Systems to inform Policies and Guide Reproductive Health Programs
more
|
The research will promote grea...ter disaggregation of health information and inclusion of gender and social determinants of health indicators in Health Information Systems (HIS) at the national level in Egypt, Jordan and Morocco. Through this, the project aims to address the data gaps in measuring inequality and the hurdles to using such data for pro-poor policy change in the these countries. The project will support both policy level changes and guide program implementation in these three countries. The project will also comprise support for capacity strengthening of relevant policy and HIS stakeholders to promote the generation and use of disaggregated health information in policies and programs. The proposed HIS will inform implementation by engaging with programs addressing specific sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges. Project results will include two packages of HIS indicators for each of the three countries. A core set of indicators to highlight greater disaggregation of health information from a multisectoral perspective. The second will support reproductive health programs to incorporate missing social dimensions of health and equity, including gender, in planning and implementation of interventions. Relevant action plans, monitoring and evaluation plans for specific SRH interventions will be produced. There will also be strengthening of relevant capacities of stakeholders. Project success will be measured in terms of the extent to which there is a consensus on the set of HIS indicators that are feasible for use in each of the three countries. The project is of three year duration and will be led by the Social Research Centre (SRC) at the American University in Cairo. It will build on SRC's previous work at the regional level supported by World Health Organization and United Nations Population Fund's regional office. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new feminist international assistance policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

STATISTICAL ALLIANCE FOR VITAL... EVENTS: STRENGTHENING REPORTING & PROGRAM USES OF FACILITY-BASED CHILD & MATERNAL MORTALITY

|
Statistical alliance for vital... events: Strengthening reporting & program uses of facility-based child & maternal mortality
more
|
Most deaths in sub-Saharan Afr...ica occur without medical attention, and as a result, the causes of death (COD) remain unknown. This lack of information greatly limits evidence-based planning and slows progress in the attainment of health targets, including those related to maternal and child health. To address this, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the enhancement of both community and facility-based reporting of COD. The WHO also emphasizes the crucial need of integrating COD data within health information management systems and civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, and ensuring that the data is used by health ministries and disease control programs. This project aims to improve facility-based reporting of COD data in Ethiopia and Mozambique by training doctors and hospital administrators on the use of simple electronic systems for capturing COD reliably, and promoting the use of the data to improve policies and programs for maternal and child health. By complementing efforts to strengthen community-based reporting of CODs in an ongoing maternal and child health project, this project will demonstrate the feasibility of implementing the WHO recommendations on the generation and use of comprehensive, high-quality COD data in health policy and program development. This initiative is building on an established partnership between the Statistical Alliance for Vital Events (St. Michaels Hospital, Canada), the Ethiopia Public Health Association, the Centro de Investigação em Saudé de Manhiça (Mozambique), and St. John's Research Institute (India). The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's prioritization of CRVS systems as a valuable public investment for safeguarding the rights of women and children, improving policy development and program delivery for maternal and child health, and strengthening accountability. The researchers will leverage opportunities for continued engagement with the Centre of Excellence for CRVS Systems housed at IDRC. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year CA$36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

STRENGTHENING AND SCALING UP M...EDICAL SIMULATION-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO SAVE LIVES IN AFRICA
more
|
|

A fundamental rural developmen...t need in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali and Senegal is the lack of relevant, gender-responsive and timely information, communication and extension services for small-scale farmers (women, men and youth). To address this issue, Farm Radio International (FRI) aims to scale up interactive rural radio in 17 regions of Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Ghana, reaching 61 radio stations and engaging at least 70 stakeholder groups including farmer-based and women's organizations. Project activities include: (1) providing relevant, timely and gender-responsive information on: effective, climate-smart agriculture; climate adaptation; gender-equality; and improved nutritional practices; (2) deepening knowledge exchanges between women, poor, and vulnerable small-scale farmers in rural areas to identify and address their respective needs using mobile tools; and (3) strengthening evidence-based decision at the community level and provide stakeholder groups with access to compiled outcome data on food-security, agriculture and gender-equality. It is expected that this project impacts up to 7.3 million small-scale farmers, including an estimated 2.3 million women small-scale farmers in the four targeted countries. Farm Radio International implements this project in partnership with FRI-Burkina Faso, FRI-Mali, FRI-Senegal, FRI-Ghana and CECI/Uniterra (Senegal).

|
|

Strengthening Equal and Inclus...ive Access to Birth Registration in Haiti/Renforcer l'accès égalitaire et inclusif à l'enregistrement des naissances en Haïti

|
The project seeks to improve a...ccess to quality birth registration services for all Haitians by strengthening the institutional and legal framework of Haiti's vital statistics system and of other ministries concerned. The project focuses on the inclusion of women and vulnerable groups and on eliminating differences based on gender, economic condition or place of residence. Acquiring a legal individual identity promotes better inclusion of Haitian women and girls and optimizes their perspectives for personal, economic and social development. The project activities include: (1) legal and policy reforms; (2) strategic planning of vital statistics; (3) capacity building and awareness activities; (4) incorporation of birth registration into other services, such as health and education; (5) registration of births in the communities and social mobilization campaigns for registration. The project uses innovative methods, such as the use of SMS messaging technology, and relies on the development of on-line birth registration systems. The project's activities focus on the departments of Artibonite (Saint-Marc, Gonaïves, Gros Morne and La Chapelle), Centre (Belladère, Thomonde, Thomassique and Cerca-la-Source) and Grande Anse (Les Irois, Anse-d'Ainault and Dame-Marie).

PREPARING STATES IN INDIA FOR ...UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE

Preparing States in India for ...Universal Health Coverage
more
|
India scores poorly on many he...alth indicators. It has the highest number of malnourished children, the highest infant mortality rate, and one of the highest rates of maternal deaths in the world. This is concerning given that India's stellar economic growth in the last two decades, growth which is likely to continue. In recognition of these challenges, the Indian government will roll out universal health coverage by the year 2020 as set out under the Planning Commission's 12th Five-Year Plan. It also created a high level expert group to assist the process. Given India's population, geographical diversity, and health inequities, the path to universal health coverage is likely to vary widely across states. Using research evidence, policymakers will need to ensure a balance between prioritizing primary health care and expanding access to insurance for secondary and tertiary care. This expanded access has the potential to become a financial burden on households. This project aims to provide the evidence needed to support the rollout of universal health care in India. The Public Health Foundation of India, in collaboration with state-level institutions and decision-makers, will carry out the research. The Foundation is well-positioned to lead the project given its position as the Secretariat of the High Level Expert Group with a mandate to provide technical and logistical support to Indian states. India's universal health care rollout will take place in phases. The scale and scope of the reform is enormous for a country with a diversity of states with varying levels of economic and social development. Indian states manage health. They must be prepared to understand the costs and fiscal implications of achieving universal health coverage. Researchers will develop benchmarks to help states prepare for the rollout. They will work with states to develop an essential health package for primary, secondary, and tertiary health care services in tier one states. They will also examine how information technology can improve access to and delivery of quality health services in a transparent manner. This project will provide practical guidance that allows Indian states to implement and expand universal health coverage in a sustainable way. It will produce targeted reports for key stakeholders. The research team will share its results through media outreach and peer review publications. This important research will also help other countries moving toward universal health coverage.

Integrating sex and gender con...siderations in biomedical sciences – Capacity building activities
more
|
This project strengthened the ...capacity of low and middle-income country researchers involved in the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Program (JCIHRP) to better integrate sex and gender considerations in their biomedical research work. The project supported their participation in the Gender Summit in Singapore in August 2019 and a side-event workshop. In addition, the event was used to gather information on how to better integrate gender considerations in the design of a potential second phase of JCIHRP. The JCIHRP is a seven-year (2015–2022), CA$35 million partnership funded by the Azrieli Foundation, IDRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Israel Science Foundation. The program was designed to advance research and discovery in the biomedical sciences while encouraging collaboration between leading scientists in Canada, Israel, and low and middle-income countries. It also aims to provide capacity-building opportunities so that emerging leaders and trainees may gain expertise and experience in the broad field of biomedicine. JCIHRP will fund up to 30 research projects, with 24 already underway through four competitions: neurosciences (2015), immunology (2016), cancer (2017), and neurobiology (2018). The 2019 competition will select six additional projects in the field of metabolism in health and disease.

The project aims to improve in...comes, health, and the environment of the vulnerable and marginalized men and women dependent on the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) economy in targeted areas in Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Java and Sulawesi. The project improves mining, environmental and social practices for men and women involved in the ASGM, including identifying alternatives to mercury use and training on safe handling of cyanide. The project also supports targeted subnational governments to better collaborate with the formal extractive sector and supports the formalization of ASGM activities through legal trade of responsible artisanal gold and value-added products in domestic and international markets. Activities include: (1) provide training on better practices for men and women miners; (2) provide training to targeted government and civil society groups on ASGM regulation and management; and (3) establish collaborative mechanisms with other relevant initiatives promoting responsible gold and diversification of the ASGM economy. This initiative supports the Government of Indonesia's implementation of the Minamata Convention on mercury, which both Canada and Indonesia signed in 2013.

|

Strengthening National Health ...Information Systems in the Middle East towards Evidence-Informed Decision Making in Health Systems
more
|
This project will promote rese...arch evidence and data-informed decision-making and accelerate achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in two selected countries in the Middle East namely Lebanon and Jordan. The project will strengthen the current health information systems and ensure that the necessary processes, tools and competences are in place for the generation, analysis and utilization of relevant, reliable and timely data and information to effectively inform health policies and programs focusing on maternal, child and adolescent health. Many countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region lack well-functioning information systems that can support health system strengthening. Key challenges include poor-quality data that does not align with decision-makers' needs; duplication, fragmentation and incomplete data; and poor utilization of data and information in decision-making and health systems strengthening. The project will adopt a multifaceted approach that will target all three domains of information system performance - technical, behavioral and institutional - to achieve sustainable improvements in data generation, analysis and use to inform health policies and practice. Comprehensive assessment of the existing health information systems and competencies will be conducted. Additionally assessing priority areas and information needs will be done using a multi-step approach, engaging diverse set of stakeholders, as well as leveraging user-friendly decision support tools. Specific efforts will be invested to include gender-sensitive indicators as well as optimize data and indicators for maternal, child and adolescent health as well as refugee health. A stepwise approach will be used starting with Lebanon and then subsequently scaling up to Jordan.Project outcomes include relevant indicators, capacities and resources that are necessary for a well-functioning, gender-sensitive and equity-oriented health information systems which can inform health policymaking and programs related in particular to SDG country reporting. At the regional level, the project will generate a common set of core indicators for reporting and benchmarking across the study countries. This project builds on previous research, tools, capacity building activities and engagement strategies and the aim is to scale-up to other countries in MENA. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new feminist international assistance policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

HOW CAN A GENDER LENS ENHANCE ...MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH SOCIAL ENTERPRISES IN AFRICA? (IMCHA)

|
How can a gender lens enhance ...maternal and child health social enterprises in Africa? (IMCHA)
more
|
Research shows that high gende...r inequity translates into poor health for mothers, pregnant women, and children. At the community and individual level, gender inequities and disparities can underlie dimensions of poverty among women. Low socioeconomic status can be associated with high fertility rates, low educational attainment, higher burden of disease, and HIV/AIDS. Gender inequities and disparities also affect access to healthcare services for women and children, particularly in fragile contexts.Social enterprise-based models have great potential to improve maternal and child health (MCH) services and they can also be used to provide an improved source of income for women. A social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being, such as a cooperative or a community organization. An initial study of social enterprise approaches to MCH care in Africa identified two primary social enterprise models: one based on primary health clinics and one based on mobile community health promoters and sales agents. Gender dynamics played an important role between women and healthcare providers, healthcare providers and social enterprises, and social enterprises and their impact on the individual or community. However, these relationships have not been adequately explored in relation to their impact on maternal and child healthcare services and related outcomes for women and children. The aim of this project, implemented by BRAC Africa, is to improve the understanding of how gender and the social enterprise approach can improve access to maternal and child health services and to outcomes across Africa and globally. The research methodology will include: a systematic literature review and mapping on gender equality, maternal and child health, and social enterprise; a survey to provide basic insight and foundational knowledge into structures and practices; and gender analysis involving both primary and secondary research using key informant interviews and focus group discussions. This will build on an existing IMCHA projects in partnership with BRAC Africa in order to expand the knowledge base about gender equality and social enterprises targeted at improving maternal and child health outcomes as well as identifying practical lessons and promising strategies. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
