Centre of Excellence for CRVS ...Systems Activity Budget Line: Strengthening Country Level Evidence, Capacity and Exchange
more
|
Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events - including birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce - is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. Integrated into existing health information systems, these statistics become valuable evidence, giving policymakers and practitioners the knowledge they need to review the circumstances leading to each maternal and child death, identify preventable factors, and take action where needed. However, such crucial information systems are lacking in many countries. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. Where global norms, standards, tools, and promising practices exist, they are not readily accessible and usable to those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate and disseminate information, including by developing an open-access, electronic platform to make key resources readily accessible. It will facilitate exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to support countries in accessing the technical expertise they need to develop and implement effective CRVS systems. This includes developing and maintaining a roster of experts for the Centre of Excellence and CRVS stakeholders at the country level to draw on as appropriate. The project will also allow the Centre of Excellence to contract expert advice and accompaniment, convene and/or participate in stakeholder meetings, as well as undertake CRVS systems gap analysis and priority setting analysis. In addition to facilitating access to technical expertise, the RSP will enable specific training for country representatives working to develop and/or implement their CRVS systems plans and it will structure peer learning opportunities to address specific gaps at the country level. The Centre of Excellence will also support locally based institutions in countries eligible for financing from the Global Financing Facility to ensure in-country CRVS systems expertise for sustainability.

STRENGTHENING RESEARCH QUALITY..., LEADERSHIP, NETWORKING, AND COMMUNICATIONS OF HEALTH IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH PROJECTS IN WEST AFRICA AND MENA

Strengthening research quality..., leadership, networking, and communications of health implementation research projects in West Africa and MENA
more
|
Maternal, child, and adolescen...t health, including sexual and reproductive health, are critical to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities across West Africa, the Middle East, and North Africa. Despite some improvement in health outcomes in these regions, progress has been uneven and growing economic and political challenges are putting that progress to the test. Research on implementation is being increasingly used to understand how certain health interventions work in the field. Results can contribute to efforts to address issues such as economic viability, potential for scale-up, meaningful engagement with community groups, means of limiting gender-based or other socio-economic driven discrimination, and improving distribution channels, among other outcomes. IDRC, working in partnership with the American University of Beirut, will be supporting implementation research projects in two thematic areas: adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and health information systems. Projects will include support activities to strengthen individual and cohort-wide research quality, leadership, networking, and communications. Starting from the early stages of the grants, various support and learning activities will accompany the projects throughout their implementation. This will include workshops, ongoing provision of technical advice, and support for new strategies, processes, and activities to improve research quality, leadership potential, networking opportunities, strategic communications, and development of joint knowledge products over the course of the projects. Collectively, these activities will help optimize the potential for reach, uptake, and influence at local, national, and regional levels. By creating opportunities and spaces to gather, learn, debate, reflect, and improve, it is expected that the outcomes will include strengthened individual capacities and peer learning, stronger linkages within the cohort and expanded networks beyond, greater reach and relevance through the development of joint knowledge products, and more effective and nuanced influence strategies and related activities towards greater sustained positive impact.

The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development. The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia.

|
Bridging the gap among healthc...are workers and decision-makers through improved routine measurement of the quality of maternal and newborn care
more
|
Progress in maternal, newborn,... and child health (MNCH) outcomes in low-income countries has been slow. In Tanzania, recent data suggests that although significant progress has been made in increasing coverage of essential services, the lack of data on quality of care is a major impediment to the achievement of the desired progress in MNCH outcomes. Through this project, researchers will build on insights gained from previous work to develop and validate a novel electronic tool for measuring the quality of maternal and newborn care. They will integrate the tool into the existing Health Management Information System (HMIS) in Tanzania, generate evidence on how a gender and equity perspective can be integrated in the routine assessment of quality of care, and identify the critical factors required for the scale-up and integration of the electronic tool into routine use. This project will build on the existing partnership between Ifakara Health Institute (Tanzania), the SickKids Hospital's Centre for Global Child Health (Canada), and the Tanzania Ministry of Health. The proposed project is closely aligned with several Tanzanian government-led strategies to improve maternal, neonatal, and child health outcomes, including the Big Results Now initiative. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

This project aims to develop, ...implement and refine tools and approaches to strengthen country monitoring and reporting in MNCH and nutrition. The purpose of the Real Accountability: Data Analysis for Results (RADAR) project is for the Institute for International Programs of Johns Hopkins University to work with Canadian institutions and organizations, in-country evaluation partners, governments and development partners in a subset of countries where Canada has maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) programming. Project activities include: (1) support CAN-MNCH in the training of a cadre of Canadian technical experts that are available to assist in implementing the MNCH results tools in DFATD programs with MNCH programming, (2) support the design of an external, Canadian-based, data repository to ensure data quality, comparability and availability in order to generate regular results reports, (3) assist in the implementation of these tools in a select number of Canada's MNCH countries in order to validate results, refine the methodologies and ensure proper implementation. The ultimate beneficiaries for this project are mothers and children, as this initiative will develop tools to assess the quality of care provided to mothers and children, in the areas of nutrition and newborn health programs.

IMPLEMENTING EFFECTIVE SIMULAT...ION-BASED EDUCATION TO IMPROVE MATERNAL NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH IN A RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED SETTING
more
|
Implementing effective simulat...ion-based education to improve maternal newborn and child health in a resource-constrained setting
more
|
In sub-Saharan Africa, and Uga...nda in particular, the highest incidence of under-five deaths occurs in the neonatal period, the main causes of death are birth asphyxia and pre-term complications. These deaths could be reduced by skilled birth attendants and competent health providers who can recognize and treat these conditions at an early stage. However, many health providers have minimal training and little opportunity to maintain or upgrade their skills in managing delivery complications and acute pediatric conditions. The project will improve quality maternal and newborn care by strengthening acute care skills and the confidence of health care providers through simulation-based training. Simulation-based learning, which allows trainees to experience the pressure and stressors of a real life situation, improves health providers' knowledge, clinical skills, procedural and teamwork competencies, and confidence. Uganda's Mbarara University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the University of Calgary, are establishing a three-year SIM for Life initiative that will a set up a simulation laboratory equipped to train faculty, students, and community health providers. This project will strengthen the capacity and support of the research team to study how simulation-based learning can effectively function in low-resourced settings and how this type of learning can be scaled up. It will help to produce key leaders in neonatal health and contribute to the improvement of newborn health outcomes in Uganda and beyond. This project's results will also benefit initiatives related to the Helping Babies Breathe component of IDRC's Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) program. IMCHA is a seven-year, $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Other contributors to the SIM for Life initiative are the Laerdal Foundation and ELMA Foundation.

IMPROVING DATA QUALITY FOR HEA...LTH RESEARCH AT LACOR HOSPITAL
more
|
Improving data quality for hea...lth research at Lacor Hospital
more
|
Uganda's northern region is be...lieved to severely lag behind most of the country in key health indicators such as maternal and child mortality. One reason for this is the lack of a responsive public health system. Lacor Hospital has for the past few decades filled this gap by becoming the primary provider of health care and serving as the first line of response to health challenges in the region. However, without the benefits of the knowledge and innovation that research in the region could yield, the hospital's ability to be responsive to the health needs of the people has been limited. The main objective of this project is to improve data and project management systems at Lacor Hospital to position it as a research platform where high-quality data is accessible to answer questions about the health of the catchment population. This project proposes a number of targeted improvements to the hospital's data and project management systems, including standardizing and digitizing the hospital's data collection and data entry processes in order to improve data quality, and training selected hospital staff in project management to improve how they manage research projects. If these changes are successful, it is hoped that the hospital will be in a stronger position to attract local and international partners to invest in conducting high quality health research in this neglected post-conflict region of the world.

This project is a component of... the Caribbean Disaster Risk Management Program, which seeks to increase the capacity of regional organizations, national governments and local communities in the Caribbean to respond to and manage natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods and to reduce their impact on the people of the region. Specifically, this project aims to reduce the medical impact that natural disasters and other emergencies can inflict on the people of the region. The project is managed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Working with national Ministries of Health, hospitals, clinics and national disaster offices PAHO's medical team uses its expertise to enhance the technical capacity of health sector practitioners to prepare for disasters, while providing them with new tools and technologies. Key activities include: (1) developing Caribbean adapted Health Sector Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation technical information and publications, (2) developing information systems on disaster risk reduction for the health sector, (3) providing targeted interventions for disaster resilient and more energy-efficient health care facilities, (4) training health human resources (women and men) in issues of disaster risk reduction and management, and (5) developing virtual emergency coordination platform for the Health Sector in the Caribbean.

Centre of Excellence for CRVS ...systems activity budget line: Contributing to global and regional level evidence, capacity, and exchange
more

Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events, such as birth, death, causes of death, marriage and divorce, is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. Where global norms, standards, tools, and promising practices exist, they are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration of Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information, including by developing an open-access electronic platform to make key resources readily accessible. It will facilitate exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for Global Financing Facility financing. This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to organize workshops, capacity-building events, seminars, conferences, and roundtables that bring together global and regional experts and stakeholders with a view to advancing the development and implementation of CRVS systems. It will support the organization of events (e.g. venues, logistics, etc.), participant attendance (e.g. airfare, accommodation, per diems, and incidentals for practitioners, experts, and institutions) from countries that are developing investment cases for Global Financing Facility financing, as well as from regional and/or global organizations where appropriate. Activities will serve to improve coordination and cooperation among global, regional, and country-level stakeholders, in addition to facilitating knowledge-sharing and best practices within and across regions.

The purpose of this project is... to improve the health care systems for and by women and those most in need. The goal is to improve citizen engagement and to make public institutions more responsive to people's needs and rights through a technological platform. The initiative favours targeted zones (urban and rural): (1) citizen and health officers freely expressing their opinions about their health system using new technologies, including mobile applications, text message platforms, blogs and wikis; (2) use of helpful and useable data by local institutions and by national decision makers to improve health systems and make them more democratic; (3) improved advocacy to make the health systems in the three countries better adapted to the needs of women and those most in need. The project's activities include the following: (1) conducting social integration activities and awareness campaigns to empower the people, notably women and those most in need, in terms of using technology; (2) training local institutions so they can collect, analyze and transmit information regarding health services to the people; (3) developing technologies (mobile application for smartphones and tablets, automated information-sharing module) to allow users to express their opinions about the health system, to allow staff to register complaints and to allow decision makers to better understand the people's needs and grievances; (4) developing a text message platform that allows people to access information on the health system's services and access, including rights to health; (5) training and coaching non-governmental organizations and public institutions to facilitate policy dialogue in order to provide better access to health services that meet people's needs. This project is part of Global... Affairs Canada's International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Indigenous youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. L'AMIE, in consortium with the First Nations Human Resources Development Commission of Quebec, sends 50 Indigenous youth to Bolivia as part of the Enhancing Indigenous Cultures project. The interns help enhance Bolivian Indigenous culture through three components focused on children and youth: their education (formal and informal); their health (physical and psychological); and their safety (child and Indigenous rights).

This project aims to strengthe...n transformative leadership capacities in West Africa to encourage improved institutional and government use of health research and evidence in decision-making. Rather than focus only on individual leadership training, the project addresses leadership capacity at the individual, organizational, and system levels. This is based on the recognition that no individual alone can successfully tackle complex and challenging health problems.A comprehensive and innovative learning-by-doing program comprising face-to-face professional schools, on-the-ground mentoring, and small grants will support multi-sectoral teams in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, and Sierra Leone. The teams representing ministries of health, civil society, research, and media organizations will be able to assess with communities the priority concerns about health service delivery and to convene follow-up multi-stakeholder dialogues to address identified gaps. Civil society organizations will be able to use digital and social media platforms to further mobilize and leverage community support for advocacy around these issues. The media organizations, through a network of trained journalists, will be able to engage policymakers and hold them accountable regarding the use of information for policy development and implementation. Overall, the participating ministries of health will be able to lead the organization of multi-stakeholder policy dialogues, while strengthened research services within the ministries will be able to better link with researchers and stakeholders in academia and civil society. As part of a scaling strategy, the West African Health Organization will ensure regional validation and dissemination of lessons across the member states of the Economic Community of West African States. A collaboration of eight leading West African Francophone, Anglophone and regional research, advocacy, and policy institutions are building on previous joint efforts to develop and implement the program. This will help to consolidate and strengthen strategic working partnerships across the five countries.

A fundamental rural developmen...t need in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali and Senegal is the lack of relevant, gender-responsive and timely information, communication and extension services for small-scale farmers (women, men and youth). To address this issue, Farm Radio International (FRI) aims to scale up interactive rural radio in 17 regions of Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Ghana, reaching 61 radio stations and engaging at least 70 stakeholder groups including farmer-based and women's organizations. Project activities include: (1) providing relevant, timely and gender-responsive information on: effective, climate-smart agriculture; climate adaptation; gender-equality; and improved nutritional practices; (2) deepening knowledge exchanges between women, poor, and vulnerable small-scale farmers in rural areas to identify and address their respective needs using mobile tools; and (3) strengthening evidence-based decision at the community level and provide stakeholder groups with access to compiled outcome data on food-security, agriculture and gender-equality. It is expected that this project impacts up to 7.3 million small-scale farmers, including an estimated 2.3 million women small-scale farmers in the four targeted countries. Farm Radio International implements this project in partnership with FRI-Burkina Faso, FRI-Mali, FRI-Senegal, FRI-Ghana and CECI/Uniterra (Senegal).

The project aims to increase i...nclusive and sustainable economic growth in Burkina Faso. It is active in the Boucle du Mouhoun region, with particular emphasis on the communes of Bana and Kona. The project carries out integrated interventions, with activities that include electrifying 14 localities from the national electricity grid, promoting certified solar lamps in rural areas, and equipping 30 remote health centres with solar energy systems. In addition, the project contributes to create new jobs for women and young entrepreneurs in the region by promoting the development of businesses and economic activities enabled by electricity, as well as by access to financing and vocational training. The project also contributes to building an enabling environment for electrification and related economic development through the improvement of local governance, the establishment of electricity management structures, as well as technical assistance to local authorities, and support to the Ministry of Energy.

Key activities include: (1) developing Caribbean adapted Health Sector Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation technical information and publications; (2) developing information systems on disaster risk reduction for the health sector; (3) providing targeted interventions for disaster resilient and more energy-efficient health care facilities; (4) training health human resources (women and men) in issues of disaster risk reduction and management; and (5) developing virtual emergency coordination platform for the Health Sector in the Caribbean.

This project aims to increase ...employment and other income-generation opportunities by improving access to post-secondary education for women and men living in remote and under-served communities of the Caribbean. The project seeks to strengthen the Open Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) to make high-quality education available to more people across the Caribbean through the use of distance education technologies. This is key in a region where countries are separated by the sea, making it difficult for many people to access the three 'traditional' campuses of UWI (in Trinidad, Jamaica, and Barbados). The virtual Open Campus seeks to deliver expanded program offerings that are better aligned with labour market needs, and undertake stronger marketing outreach to students. Some project activities include: (i) designing, developing and delivering demand-driven, gender and environmentally sensitive post-secondary distance education programs to students across the Caribbean; (ii) training faculty, instructors and tutors in gender and environmentally sensitive course design, development and delivery; (iii) conducting a comprehensive analysis of program requirements to better respond to labour market needs; and (iv) setting up new library virtual services (online) that can be accessed by all Open Campus learning sites throughout the Caribbean.

This project is part of Global... Affairs Canada's International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Indigenous youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. As part of the Pathways to Indigenous Youth Leadership project, Canada World Youth (CWY) sends 102 Indigenous youth to Colombia and Peru. For intern recruitment, CWY delivers the project in partnership with Canadian organizations with extensive national networks. Interns support local partners in the following areas: agricultural development; engagement of marginalized groups; recycling; reforestation; youth entrepreneurship; health; environmental education; and youth entrepreneurship.

CATALYSING LEADERSHIP TO IMPRO...VE HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR WOMEN, ADOLESCENTS, AND CHILDREN IN WEST AFRICA

Catalysing leadership to impro...ve health outcomes for women, adolescents, and children in West Africa
more
|
