This program seeks to resolve ...pressing health systems challenges to improve primary health care related to maternal, newborn and child health through implementation research. In doing so, the program supports two Health Policy and Research Organizations (HPROs) and up to twenty Implementation Research Teams (IRTs), each associated with one of the two HPROs. Supported by the HPROs, the IRTs undertake implementation research relevant to the target countries primary health care needs. The focus of the program is in nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa including: Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique, Mali, Senegal, South Sudan, Malawi and Nigeria. These countries are both CIDA's priority countries as well as the Muskoka Initiatives' countries of focus. The program adds value to international development health efforts by contributing to the evidence base to address developing countries health care needs and by translating that knowledge into effective policies and programs that make a significant and sustainable impact.

Developmental Evaluation of Ec...ohealth Field Building

|
IDRC s Ecohealth program endea...vours to build the field of Ecohealth through research, capacity-building and networking activities. And yet, while the concept of field-building is widely recognized, published literature on the nature of field-building and its evaluation is scant at best. This presents a challenge to the program as it strives to assess its progress toward successful field-building outcomes in a way that is rigorous and robust. This grant will allow the Ecohealth program to recruit an external evaluator (or small team of evaluators) to monitor, assess, guide and adapt its program design and delivery related to field-building activities.

THE EFFECT OF ANTIBIOTICS IN E...ARLY LIFE ON BRAIN FUNCTION AND BEHAVIOUR

The Effect of Antibiotics in E...arly Life on Brain Function and Behaviour
more
|
The human gastrointestinal tra...ct is home to 100 trillion microorganisms. Research has found that these microorganisms, known as gut microbiota, play an important role in the development and normal function of our immune and nervous systems. This project will offer important insights into how antibiotics might disrupt gut microbiota and affect brain function in young children.Brain chemistry and antibioticsRecent evidence in animal models suggests that gut microbiota can influence brain chemistry, which can affect behaviour. However, we do not know how this occurs. We also do not know how the disruption of normal gut microbiota early in life from antibiotic use, for example, might influence brain development and potentially contribute to behavioural and/or mood disorders. This project will seek to offer some answers. The research team will aim to:-understand the mechanisms underpinning the microbiome-gut-brain axis and the potential contribution of gut microbiota disruption to neurodevelopmental and behavioural disorders-determine the long-term impact of early life disruption of the gut microbiota on brain chemistry and behaviour related to anxiety and social interaction-delineate immune mechanisms linking the altered microbiota to behavioural changes-identify potentially novel components of the microbiota-gut-brain axis related to antibiotic effects on brain function and behaviour-further develop the training environment and collaborative research among the partnersUnderstanding the gut-brain linkThe successful completion of this project will provide a greater understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the connection between gut bacteria and the brain. It will provide insight into the gut microbiota disruption's potential contribution to the development of mood and behavioural disorders. This knowledge may help researchers develop novel approaches to maintaining mental health.Project leadershipThe project lead is Paul Forsythe at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. His collaborators include Omry Koren, Bar-Ilan University, Israel, and Javier Bravo and Marcela Julio, Pontificia Universidad Cato¿lica de Valparai¿so, Chile.Project fundingThis project is funded through the first research competition of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Initiative. The Initiative is a collaboration between the Azrieli Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Israel Science Foundation, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

PROFILING EIF2A-DEPENDENT TRAN...SLATION IN SYNAPTIC PLASTICITY AND MEMORY

This project will provide evid...ence to help direct treatment strategies in patients with memory deficits and reduce the symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease.Addressing mental and neurological disordersThe World Health Organization (WHO) recently said that traditional epidemiological methods have seriously underestimated the global burden of mental and neurological disorders. These methods, according to the WHO, are biased toward mortality and they disregard disability rates. Learning, memory, and perception rely on an intricate network of proteins that orchestrate the human brain's higher cognitive functions. Protein synthesis, also known as translation, is an important biological process that regulates the function of these molecules. Dysregulation of translation leads to pathological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease, Huntington's disease, and prion diseases (which are spongiform encephalopathies, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease). A key molecule regulating protein synthesis is eIF2. Recent studies have shown that modulation of eIF2 activity can enhance learning and memory. Knowledge gained from this project has the potential to direct treatment strategies targeting eIF2 in patients with memory deficits to alleviate the cognitive and neurological symptoms associated with Alzheimer's.Project objectivesThe project aims to:-understand a key molecule regulating protein synthesis and its target mRNAs in synaptic plasticity and memory formation-implement a multi-approach study using genetic, biochemical, behavioural, electrophysiological, and super resolution imaging-further develop the graduate training environment and international research collaborationProject leadershipThe project lead is Nahum Sonenberg at McGill University, Canada. His collaborators are Kobi Rosenblum, University of Haifa, Israel, and Deepak Nair,Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.Project fundingThis project is funded through the first research competition of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Initiative. Circuit Formation by Spatio-Te...mporal Control of Messenger RNA Translation

The connections inside the bra...in need to be wired in a precise manner during development to ensure its proper function. This project will provide insight into circuit formation to help us understand how axon regeneration can improve clinical outcomes. Brain wiring, damage, and developmental defects Researchers have suggested that improper wiring of the nervous system is the basis for some neurodevelopmental defects. What are the mechanisms that guarantee the proper wiring between the billions of neurons during brain development? Molecules in the extracellular environment, called guidance cues, guide axons to their targets. These cues can be attractive, pulling axons in the right direction, or repulsive, which means they prevent axons from navigating to incorrect targets. Other conditions in which axons need to navigate in adults include regeneration after mechanical or degenerative stimuli, such as a spinal cord injury. Proper regeneration in adults is still a significant clinical problem. Project objectives This research project aims to: -generate a comprehensive picture of the molecular mechanisms underlying the nervous system's wiring -identify novel strategies to promote the proper guidance and wiring of the nervous system -further develop the graduate training environment and international research collaboration among the partners This work will shed new light on the mechanisms that govern the wiring of the nervous system and their role in axon regeneration. It could help to identify novel strategies to promote proper guidance and wiring in the neural circuits of abnormally developing axons, or damaged and regenerating axons. Project leadership The project lead is Fre¿de¿ric Charron at l'Institut de recherches cliniques de Montre¿al, Universite¿ de Montre¿al, Canada. His collaborators are Avraham Yaron, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, and Felipe A. Court, Universidad de Chile. Project funding This project is funded through the first research competition of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Initiative. The Initiative is a collaboration between the Azrieli Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Israel Science Foundation, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

Health research in the South i...s mostly funded and directed by institutions in the North, and is not necessarily related to priority health needs as recognized by those in the South. The West Africa Health Organization (WAHO), Health Research Unit, has been mandated by its member states to address this issue. This project will build research for health capacity in WAHO, and in four of its member countries (Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali and Sierra Leone). In each member country, researchers will map existing research for health capacity/needs, formulate a plan of action, design a training curriculum for a course on research for health, and deliver the training course. The last will include funding, mentoring and supervising selected research projects. In addition, a research for health information management system will be constructed and implemented (with appropriate training and adaptation) in each of the four countries involved.

This project focuses on a numb...er of urgent public health problems in Afghanistan and contributes to addressing the underlying and immediate causes of maternal and child death. The objective is to improve the health of women, newborns, and children under five in select areas of Bamyan and Badakhshan provinces in Afghanistan. The project encompasses four main components: (1) enhancing access to maternal, newborn, and child health services by improving health facilities; (2) improving the quality of health services provided by strengthening the skills of health workers (midwives, nurses, managers) and by strengthening the educational programs at selected professional development institutions; (3) enhancing the participation of communities in decision-making processes within the health sector, including the management and distribution of health services, holding the government to account, and raising awareness of better health practices; and (4) improving the health and nutrition practices of women, men, and children under five in selected areas in Badakhshan.Project activities include infrastructure work, including the construction of the new Bamyan Provincial Hospital, and the provision of maternal, newborn and child health equipment to health facilities. The project also involves training new nurses, community health nurses, and midwives and strengthening national and provincial training institutes. On the nutrition front, the project includes stocking health facilities with nutritious food, training facility staff in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition, and supporting micronutrient suppliers. At the community level, the project provides training for men, women, and children under five in hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation, in addition to undertaking community awareness activities. It also supports the production of nutritious food and helps communities to implement water, sanitation, and hygiene projects.

The Government of Canada has c...reated a fund to support health research and innovation aimed at improving the lives of the world's poor. The Development Innovation Fund (DIF) will support scientists and scientific institutions engaged in health research through a series of peer-reviewed grant competitions. The fund will be administered by a consortium of institutions: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). CIHR will manage the peer-review process for selecting grantees. GCC will look after the financial, administrative and substantive aspects of the research grants, as well as issues related to the dissemination and commercialization of research results. IDRC will oversee the DIF on behalf of the Government of Canada, and as such will be represented on GCC's Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board. IDRC will also take the lead in monitoring and evaluation, fundraising and enabling the participation of developing world scientists and scientific institutions in the competition. Where possible, IDRC will integrate DIF activities into related IDRC programs.

The two faces of endogenous DN...A editing enzymes: Promoting gene mutations as well as genome repair
more

Type B lymphocytes are a speci...fic type of white blood cell within our immune system. They produce and export antibodies which seek out, attach to, and neutralize microbes and toxins. A unique way that B lymphocytes boost their antibody response is through making changes in the genes that encode for antibodies. These genetic changes in B lymphocytes are carried out by AID, an enzyme that alters the sequence of antibody genes, leading to improved antibodies and hence improved immunity. However, AID activity is often misdirected to the wrong genes, or mis-expressed in the wrong cell types. This results in genetic mutations that can transform healthy cells into cancers. As a result, AID is now recognized as a leading cause of aggressive lymphoma/leukaemia and several solid tissue tumours. Furthermore, continued AID activity in cancer cells increases their ability to mutate and therefore become resistant to therapeutic approaches. Thus, the current scientific belief is that AID causes mutations to the genome of cells which in turn results in causing and/or exacerbating cancer. Strong preliminary data hints at the possibility of a completely new aspect of AID activity: DNA damaged by external sources such as radiation can itself attract AID and this may serve to correct/repair some of the damage. The aim of this project is to study the extent and mechanisms of this effect, and investigate whether it represents a possible pathway by which cancer cells can evade or become resistant to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, since many cancer therapies work through inducing DNA damage. The results of this project may have important implications for cancer treatment strategies. The project is led in Canada by Memorial University of Newfoundland in collaboration with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel) and researchers from Pakistan and India. It was selected and approved for funding through the second research competition of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Program, which is a partnership between Canada's International Development Research Centre, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Israel Science Foundation and the Azrieli Foundation. This seven-year, $35M Canadian-Israeli effort draws on the unique scientific strengths of both countries and facilitates networking opportunities with peers from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Projects include a plan for integrating researchers from low- and middle-income countries that will establish long-term scientific relationships.

The Innovating for Maternal an...d Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative is a research program that seeks to assist countries in resolving pressing health systems challenges to improve maternal, newborn, and child health. IMCHA has earmarked synergy funding for high-performing implementation research teams. This funding focuses on two areas: research focusing on the scale-up of promising interventions aligned with existing IMCHA efforts, either thematically or geographically, for the achievement of wider impact; and research addressing complementary areas of focus not currently covered in the existing implementation research efforts.IDRC's Maternal and Child Health program has developed detailed evaluation criteria to assess the proposals related to this grant. Six external reviewers and four reviewers from IDRC have been selected based on language considerations, geographic and technical expertise, links with IMCHA technical/management and operations committees, and prior experience with the IMCHA proposal review process. Fifteen proposals have been submitted for consideration. This project will cover the cost of engaging the external reviewers, including travel, accommodation, and other logistics. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Supporting the communication a...nd dissemination of research on women's, children, and adolescent health
more
|
The health of women, children,... and adolescents is a key Canadian government development priority. It is also part of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In alignment with these global priorities, the Maternal and Child Health program is supporting a rich portfolio of implementation research projects that work towards improving the quality, accessibility, and accountability of health services in low and middle-income countries (LMIC).Building on this strong foundation of research, IDRC is exploring new frontiers by supporting complementary research efforts around health information systems and adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights, with a focus on populations in fragile contexts in West Africa, North Africa, and the Middle East. IDRC's approach has been to support LMIC researchers, policymakers and implementers in a participatory manner, to facilitate opportunities to influence national, regional, and global agendas through strategic convening and dialogues, and to use and disseminate research results. This project aims to communicate the strategic priorities of the program, and to disseminate research results of supported projects to produce greater visibility and reach for impact. A suite of engaging communication products will be developed through this fund to disseminate research results, and to enable the strategic involvement of IDRC grantees in key events to promote knowledge exchange and to influence policies, practices, agendas, and funding priorities. Funds will also support knowledge translation activities that arise, such as grantee engagement in high-level meetings and events, to take advantage of opportunities that enable the mobilization of knowledge into policy processes.

Reproductive, maternal, newbor...n, child & adolescent health in conflict settings: case studies to inform implementation of interventions
more
|
This research project will con...tribute to evidence from four country case studies in Syria, South Sudan, Mali and Colombia or the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of a global project to inform developing operational guidance on interventions related to reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH) in conflict settings. The objectives of this project are to understand how in conflict settings decisions on RMNCAH priority interventions are reached, the gaps in service provision and in the populations reached, and the impact of such interventions including intervention delivery strategies. The study will use a mix of quantitative and qualitative research methods employing systematic literature review, quantitative analyses, document review, and prospective qualitative data collection through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. There will be a global methods workshop that will bring country teams from 11 case study countries (including the four supported by IDRC) at the start of the project. Country-specific inception and feedback meetings will be held to engage local stakeholders in the conduct of the research and the interpretation of its results. The project will be conducted by a global academic research consortium led by the SickKids Hospital's Centre for Global Child Health in collaboration with local academic and implementation partners. The outcomes include a set of five papers in an early 2019 issue of the Lancet which will bring together findings from across this global project and will be launched at the International Congress of Pediatrics in March 2019. One of these five papers will synthesize findings from across all country case studies. A separate scientific journal supplement will collate findings specifically from the case studies. There will be other venues of dissemination including conferences, symposia and in-country dissemination of findings.

CLIMATE ADAPTIVE ACTION PLANS ...TO MANAGE HEAT STRESS IN INDIAN CITIES

Climate adaptive action plans ...to manage heat stress in Indian cities
more
|
The Intergovernmental Panel on... Climate Change estimates that rising global temperatures will increase the amount and severity of heat waves. In India, these heat waves are exacerbated by the heat generated by human activities in urban areas. This has a considerable impact on the health of vulnerable communities, including a rise in fatalities. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, in 2015 alone more than 2,400 people died of heat-related causes. Despite projections by climate models of a warming climate and increasing frequency of extreme heat events in the coming years, in India the public recognition of the magnitude of these hazards remains low. Administrative support systems generally lack preparedness measures and data to quantify how heat stress affects human health, work productivity, and livelihoods. This project, implemented by the New Delhi-based organization Integrated Research for Action and Development, will support the development of location-specific and gender-sensitive heat stress action plans in Delhi, Bhubaneswar, and Rajkot. These plans will be based on quantitative and qualitative measures, primary and secondary data, and shared learning dialogues with stakeholders. The researchers, in collaboration with the municipal corporations, will identify the spatial vulnerability of populations during extreme heat events; analyze the impact of extreme heat events on health, work productivity, and livelihoods; select appropriate, innovative, and affordable climate adaptation measures that consider associated cost effectiveness and gender-based implications; provide training to urban planners, municipal commissioners, city engineers, officials from various healthcare centres, and municipal health officers to improve their ability to execute heat stress action plans; and organize policy workshops to facilitate the implementation of the heat stress action plans into municipal disaster strategies in the selected areas. The research process and plans developed are expected to influence appropriate adaptation actions and associated policy at the municipal scale, which will improve resilience and reduce vulnerability of more than 10 million at-risk people in the selected areas. The plans will be made available to the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Indian Institute of Public Health to enable an analysis of their potential to be applied to other cities in India.

Examining Burma's Development:... A Research Fellowship Program

Recent changes in Burma offer ...the right climate to address the urgent need for evidence-based sustainable development research. This grant will establish a research fellowship program to allow 10 candidates annually to examine Burma's development processes, policies, and practices. Research fellows will strengthen their proposal development, research methodology, data analysis, and report writing skills in fields related to IDRC's mandate, including agriculture, climate change, environment, health and health systems, information society and innovation, and social and economic policy. The Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD) at Thailand's Chiang Mai University will manage the four-year program, which targets junior and mid-level academic and non-academic Burmese scholars. The program will support collaboration between research fellows and researchers working in Thailand and other Greater Mekong sub-region countries. They will participate in training workshops and seminars to present their work. Their research reports will be published as part of the RCSD working papers series. The program's launch takes advantage of recent governance and societal changes in Burma, which have created an encouraging research environment where research can influence public policy. A sufficient supply of researchers with the capacity and means to conduct quality research is essential to exploit these new opportunities and contribute to the early transition process in Burma.

TOWARD A REGIONAL RESEARCH AGE...NDA ON PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURING AND ACCESS TO MEDICINES IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
more
|
Toward a Regional Research Age...nda on Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Access to Medicines in Sub-Saharan Africa
more
|
Africa continues to deal with ...an increasing disease burden, neglect of African disease problems (such as Ebola), and continued over-reliance on imported essential medicines. Policymakers are looking for solutions. This project will define a regional research agenda that aims to address the issues.Local solutions to local problemsAfrican policymakers are pushing for local pharmaceutical manufacturing as a way to attain self-sufficiency in drug supplies, improve access to medicine, and create job opportunities. Their call to action is reflected in the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa. It is also found at the sub-regional levels, including the Southern Africa Development Community Pharmaceutical Business Plan (2007-2013) and the East African Community Regional Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan (2012-2016). Competition, fragmentation, skillsThis political support is a key ingredient for the success of local pharmaceutical manufacturing; however, there are doubts about the initiative's viability. Africa has small and fragmented markets. Economies of scale would be difficult to realize, and the continent has minimal technical and infrastructure capacities. There are also doubts about a local industry's ability to compete with large international manufacturers in a free, open, and liberalized market. These concerns raise fundamental questions regarding local pharmaceutical manufacturing: Can it ensure access to quality, affordable medicines and still remain competitive in an open market? Under what conditions? There is a lack of evidence on current research gaps and ongoing initiatives and programs in sub-Saharan Africa. Research and mapping to inform discussionsResearchers will review all ongoing research, policies, programs, and initiatives by different funding agencies. They will identify funders and research organizations that support programs on health innovation, access to medicines, and local pharmaceutical production, then map their priorities by diseases, geographical localities, and target groups. The project will also facilitate discussions among key stakeholders, including pharmaceutical manufacturer associations, research organizations, and funding agencies. The goal will be to negotiate a regional research agenda on pharmaceutical manufacturing and access to medicines in sub-Saharan Africa.

The 2017 Dakar consultation on... the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concluded with a wide consensus among the participants on the need for a regional coalition to accelerate progress towards the SDGs and track where and how the progress is happening. As a next step, this project aims to advance this consensus and identify key regional priorities for the health-related SDGs. Thereafter, propose mechanisms that can track progress towards the health-related SDGs nationally and regionally. The project will be led by Initiative Prospective Agricole et Rurale (IPAR), Senegal and the West African Health Organization (WAHO). Policy research institutions in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Senegal will also collaborate in the research activities. In addition, the project aims to work with key civil society organizations across a range of social and economic sectors to analyze their involvement in implementing and monitoring of the health-related SDGs, including actions to ensure meaningful engagement and participation of women and marginalized groups. A key outcome of this project will be a deeper understanding of the key indicators and the extent to which the required data exists to monitor them. The results will be used to develop a multi-stakeholder SDG monitoring approach for the health related indicators in West Africa. The project aligns with the 2030 global agenda for sustainable development and is closely aligned with Canada's policy for civil society partnerships for international assistance.???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
