F.A: DEVELOPING DISTRICT LEVEL... HOSPITALS

F.a: Developing District Level... Hospitals
more
|
The Health care system in Nort...h Korea is still in need of external assistance in order to provide the essential basic services. The Patients of the catchment area of four district/county level hospitals with 460 000 people and one province level hospital with 1 510 000 people will have better health services. The number of doctors and nurses in the partnering hospitals is about 1000 and through training, the impact will spread among workers of other hospitals. In 2016, the project will continue teaching in the hospitals to increase the capacity of the hospitals regarding cardiology, radiology and operations. The goal is improved health of population in the selected district/counties. The purpose of the project is improved provision of health services of selected hospitals. Last year the number of diagnostic examinations annually made in the hospitals by the equipment provided by Fida International was about 52 400. The number of appropriate safe surgical procedures annually made by the equipment provided by Fida in the hospitals is about 6 800. Increasing number of serious diseases can be correctly diagnosed and treated due to practical training of medical personnel. More and more patients are coming to our contact hospitals from other districts/counties in order to get access to quality health services because of their good reputation. Medical students are coming to have a practicing period in the district hospitals due to work of Fida International. The project benefits poor and vulnerable families with children, like ordinary farmers and workers. Also the medical personnel of the hospitals and medical students from university hospitals will benefit. Fida International is an implementing agency, but in close collaboration with Korea-EU Cooperation Coordinating Agency (KECCA). The project is carried out in cooperation of the leadership and the medical personnel of the five hospitals.

Direct Aid Program: Small Gran...ts Program 2017-18
more
|
The Direct Aid Program (DAP) i...s a small-grants scheme administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) through Australia's diplomatic posts in developing countries. DAP's objective is to advance developmental outcomes in ODA-eligible countries with projects primarily focussed on practical and tangible results. In 2017-18 Australia supported over 800 DAP projects in around 110 countries. DAP supports local community efforts towards poverty reduction and engages a wide range of partners including non-government organisations, community groups, schools, health facilities and local governments. Projects helped people with disabilities, provided small-scale infrastructure, encouraged community income generation and improved people's health. The total value of this multi-country initiative is $22 million expensed over the 2017-18 financial year.

IDENTIFYING THE DRIVERS AND VU...LNERABILITIES OF ACRAL LENTIGINOUS MELANOMA THROUGH THE STUDY OF PDX MODELS FROM LATIN AMERICAN PATIENTS
more
|
Identifying the drivers and vu...lnerabilities of acral lentiginous melanoma through the study of PDX models from Latin American patients
more
|
Melanoma is the common cancer ...that has increased its worldwide incidence the most in the last decades. Survival rates for cutaneous melanoma have increased dramatically in the last decades due in part to the development of drugs that specifically target disease subtypes and agents that stimulate the immune response against tumours. These breakthroughs have been possible thanks to the study of mutations in melanoma genomes and the use of pre-clinical models that faithfully resemble human tumours. However, this success has not been realised yet for patients with acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), which constitutes the most common subtype of this disease in some Latin American countries. ALM has remained poorly studied to date due to its rarity in European-descent populations, and its causes and genetic and environmental drivers remain mostly unknown, thus survival rates and response to therapy are still poor in these patients. The long-term aim of this project is to develop novel therapies for ALM patients. In this context, we have two specific aims: 1. Generate and characterise a comprehensive collection of faithful ALM pre-clinical models in the form of patient-derived xenografts (PDX). PDX are human tumours implanted into immunodeficient mice. This collection will include tumours from a variety of body locations and will come from Brazil and Mexico to account for the large variability observed within the disease. We will sequence each PDX's protein-coding genome, and determine gene and protein expression levels to understand what biological pathways are altered in ALM tumours. We will also analyse genetic ancestry, which has been hypothesised to increase risk to develop some tumour types, such as breast cancer. An enrichment of certain genome variants in cases when compared to their population of origin might indicate regions of the genome that modify risk to develop ALM. 2. Use the PDX collection in order to explore new targets for therapy and biomarkers of ALM. The molecular characterisation of ALMs will allow us to identify potential drug targets, biomarkers useful to determine responders to a specific treatment, and potential resistance mechanisms. We plan to explore this at first by focusing on CDK4 pathway dependencies via direct treatment of PDX-carrying mice with CDK4 inhibitors followed by assessment of tumour growth, as well as the study of gene and protein profiles of responder and non-responders. We expect that the results from this project will identify genetic risk factors and suggest therapeutic alternatives for ALM patients, and that it will establish a valuable resource, in the form of a PDX collection, that can be shared with the research community.

STRENGTHENING CITIZEN ENGAGEME...NT IN MOZAMBIQUE
more
|
Strengthening Citizen Engageme...nt in Mozambique
more
|
To increase citizen influence ...on the quality of health and education service delivery in four target provinces
more
|
The programme will enable citi...zens to express their views, take initiative to improve their lives, and hold government accountable. It will contribute to making state institutions more accountable to citizens for service delivery. It will increase citizen’s engagement with state institutions in demanding their rights and ensure there is more information available about the quality of services. Without better information available for citizens and government on the quality of services, and without more engagement of citizens at both local and national levels, the current inefficiencies, inequalities and lack of accountability in the system are likely to persist.
This will be done by strengthening citizen involvement in the monitoring of primary and secondary levels of public sector service delivery in both health and education (primary and secondary schools, primary health care centres, and referral hospitals), and supporting civil society organisations to leverage those results into higher level decision making processes. The programme will facilitate a dialogue between communities and service providers to build understanding and improve service quality. The programme will work at both national and sub-national levels. At sub-national level, it will work in 3 out of the 11 Provinces in Mozambique. Key results from the monitoring will be used at national level to influence and inform national decision making. In addition, the programme will undertake a limited set of national monitoring initiatives, in order to build critical mass and influence discrete centrally controlled issues, such as procurement and distribution systems for medicines and textbooks. The programme will strengthen the outcomes of DFID investments in budget support to the Government of Mozambique for education and health by increasing the accountability of government services to the citizens they are meant to serve.
There will be a cross-cutting focus on capacity development, learning and experimentation, and robust evaluation. The programme approach will initially test and refine methodologies and tools, progressively scaling up successful interventions in response to evidence generated by the impact evaluation as well as routine monitoring processes.

AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEERS FOR INTE...RNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: GLOBAL SCOPE

Australian Volunteers for Inte...rnational Development: Global Scope
more
|
The Australian Volunteers for ...International Development (AVID) program was launched by the Australian Government in May 2011. It was aimed at bringing together four separate and unaligned volunteer programs under a single Australian Government banner with unified program goal and objectives. The goal of the program is to contribute to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction and advance Australia's reputation and relationships in partner countries. AVID programme makes a considerable contribution to the achievement of the Government's public diplomacy objectives. Volunteers promote a positive perception of Australia in the region, and promote a positive perception of the aid program domestically. AVID also contributes to development outcomes and links the Australian community with people and organisations in developing countries. The AVID programme seeks to: build understanding of Australia's international role and commitment to integration with the Indo-Pacific region; increase the number of volunteers working to improve the economic livelihoods of people in developing countries; and develop volunteer assignments in priority areas of governance, health, social infrastructure and services and education. Funding under this initiative assists Scope Global's ongoing costs for implementation of the AVID program including volunteer allowance, recruitment, travel, insurance, management and other associated administrative costs. The total value of this investment is $147.8 million over 7 years, starting 2011-12.

The impact of collective Diasp...ora Support on community Resilience: case study on Rural Health Infrastructure in Burkina Faso
more
|
The project aims to investigat...e the effects of collective remittances of migrant groups on their region of origin in the health sector. In addition to supporting infrastructure development, the project also analyses 'social remittances', e.g. the transfer of knowledge and experience in relation to the health practices. At the center of the case study is the collaboration between a diaspora community in Bergamo / Italy and the Niahogo region in the south of Burkina Faso. The investigation focuses on the establishment of a health center and a pharmacy and associated social practices.
