To strengthen IPK and INHEM to...wards accomplishment of their academic mission through capacity strengthening and scientific co-operation

Background: This programme aim...s to contribute to achieving better population health outcomes and promoting sustainable human development by building capacities through collaborative research and action in the field of public health and by putting the Cuban expertise to value at international level through supporting academic networking. The institutional research capacity of the Institute of Tropical Medicine Pedro Kourí (IPK) and the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology (INHEM) will be strengthened through investment in equipment, transfer of technology, development of human resources and facilitation of staff mobility. Research capacity will be built in the domains of disease control (arbovirosis, tuberculosis, parasite infections and sexually transmitted infections) and health care organisation (focussing on improving health service organization to deal with chronic diseases), mobilising public health, biomedical and clinical science capacities. Incorporation of regional partners in selected joint research activities will form part of the programme, as well as a tri-lateral collaboration between Cuba, Belgium and DR Congo, initially focussing on arbovirosis control. This will boost the international impact of our joint research and create the opportunity for translation of our scientific results in wider, sustainable health policies.

|
Grant to the Instituut voor Tr...opische Geneeskunde Antwerpen/ITG (Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp)
more
|
Background: The annual grant t...o the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp is safeguarded under the Codex Higher Education. This grant covers personnel expenses, operating expenses and equipment costs. The ITG provides post-initial education and scientific services and carries out scientific research in the field of tropical medicine. The management agreement between the ITG and the Flemish Ministry of Education lays down further conditions with regard to the activities of this institution. In 2015, an amount of EUR 10,526,000 was invested in the ITG. According to the management agreement, 40% thereof must be spent on higher education and 40% on scientific research. The remaining 20% is spent on social services for the benefit of poor target groups in developing countries.

ECOHEALTH BOOK
|
Ecohealth Book
|
The fiscal year 2009-2010 mark...s the end of IDRC s Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health (Ecohealth) 5-year prospectus. During that period, the Ecohealth program initiative has funded activities that have generated a wealth of experience, findings and outputs. In many instances, this funding has directly contributed to the evolution of Ecohealth concepts and practices. This grant will allow the initiative to summarize its research results in a book. The edited volume will consist of a historical analysis of the evolution of the Ecohealth approach, a collection of case studies grouped thematically and short editorials highlighting key lessons. The book will be launched at the Third Biannual Forum of the International Association of Ecology and Health in London, England, August 2010.

The Government of Canada has c...reated a fund to support health research and innovation aimed at improving the lives of the world's poor. The Development Innovation Fund (DIF) will support scientists and scientific institutions engaged in health research through a series of peer-reviewed grant competitions. The fund will be administered by a consortium of institutions: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). CIHR will manage the peer-review process for selecting grantees. GCC will look after the financial, administrative and substantive aspects of the research grants, as well as issues related to the dissemination and commercialization of research results. IDRC will oversee the DIF on behalf of the Government of Canada, and as such will be represented on GCC's Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board. IDRC will also take the lead in monitoring and evaluation, fundraising and enabling the participation of developing world scientists and scientific institutions in the competition. Where possible, IDRC will integrate DIF activities into related IDRC programs.

This program seeks to resolve ...pressing health systems challenges to improve primary health care related to maternal, newborn and child health through implementation research. In doing so, the program supports two Health Policy and Research Organizations (HPROs) and up to twenty Implementation Research Teams (IRTs), each associated with one of the two HPROs. Supported by the HPROs, the IRTs undertake implementation research relevant to the target countries primary health care needs. The focus of the program is in nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa including: Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique, Mali, Senegal, South Sudan, Malawi and Nigeria. These countries are both CIDA's priority countries as well as the Muskoka Initiatives' countries of focus. The program adds value to international development health efforts by contributing to the evidence base to address developing countries health care needs and by translating that knowledge into effective policies and programs that make a significant and sustainable impact.

This project aims to support r...esearch partnerships between African and Canadian researchers to find solutions to Africa s human resources crisis and to strengthen health systems in Africa. The project seeks to demonstrate a clear link between research, policy, and action to improve the health of the most vulnerable populations in the region. The project supports ten research teams based in seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The research teams are led jointly by an African researcher and an African decision-maker and include several Canadian researchers. The research focuses on the needs of disadvantaged segments of the population and studies: (1) how to recruit and retain health workers and shift certain services to less specialized health workers to address the severe human resources crisis in the health sector in sub-Saharan Africa; and (2) the role of health information in ensuring greater equity in access to health care. This project is implemented by Canada s Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI), an established collaborative mechanism made up of three Canadian agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD), and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The GHRI is hosted at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). This project is the research component of the African Health Systems Initiative (AHSI), a ten-year, $450-million commitment (2006-2016) to strengthen health systems in sub-Saharan Africa.
