March 2016 - Founded in 1946, ...the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is mandated by the United Nation General Assembly to protect the rights of children and women in developing countries through its development and humanitarian assistance programming. UNICEF's mandate in humanitarian situations is to meet the needs of the most vulnerable, to save lives and protect rights. In humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF's project activities include: (1) treating children for severe acute malnutrition; (2) providing people with access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities; (3) providing emergency education programming for children; (4) ensuring protection services for children and women; and (5) providing basic healthcare. With the support of GAC and other donors, UNICEF's 2016 emergency operations aim to protect and assist an estimated 24 million people affected by conflict, natural disasters and political instability. / TBC

Prevention and Reduction of Se...xual Violence in Armed Conflict Situations - ICRC 2016 / Prévention et réduction de la violence sexuelle dans les situat

March 2016 - This project incr...eases the International Committee of the Red Cross's (ICRC) capacity to prevent and reduce sexual violence in armed conflicts, particularly for women and girls who face increased vulnerability in situations of conflict and displacement. Rape and other forms of sexual violence may be used systematically as an act of reprisal and to create fear. The consequences are far reaching, affecting victims not only physically but psychologically and socially. For this reason, ICRC has launched a special initiative (2013-2016) to strengthen its response to sexual violence, with the intention of improving delivery of services, prevention of sexual violence, and improving the capacity of its staff to respond. GAC and other donors also provided support to this initiative in 2014 and 2015. The ICRC also works with States, weapon bearers, and religious and traditional leaders to promote awareness. In this regard, the ICRC has a unique role working in conflict zones, with access to areas inaccessible by many other organizations and with greater credibility in advocating for the protection of civilians, including vulnerable women and girls.

March 2016 - Somalia has suffe...red from conflict and insecurity for more than twenty five years, and remains vulnerable to the effects of chronic natural disasters (drought, flooding), making it one of the longest running and most severe humanitarian contexts in the world. According to recent United Nations assessments, 4.9 million Somalis (about one half of the population) now require humanitarian assistance to survive, an increase of more than 60% since the beginning of 2015. Of these, over one million people have been internally displaced (and more than one million more are living as refugees in neighbouring countries). Widespread hunger, high levels of acute malnutrition, lack of access to safe water and adequate sanitation, vulnerability to disease outbreaks, and threats to personal safety and security are all characteristics of the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing the Somali population. With GAC's support, Save the Children Canada is addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of up to 60,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) around Mogadishu and Baidoa. Project activities include: (1) the support of four primary health care units, two in each project area, offering a wide range of consultative and curative services; (2) the provision of outpatient therapeutic feeding, targeted supplementary feeding, and outreach regarding infant and young child feeding to combat acute malnutrition; and (3) the rehabilitation of safe water and sanitation resources serving the health care units and surrounding communities.

South Sudan - Emergency Health... Care - Doctors without Borders Canada (MSF) 2016 / Soudan du Sud - Assistance d'urgence en santé - Médecins Sans Fronti

March 2016 - An estimated 8.7 ...million people across South Sudan are affected by the effects of armed conflict and inter-communal violence, economic decline, disease, and climatic shocks. Nearly 1.7 million are internally displaced within South Sudan and over 640,000 South Sudanese have sought protection in neighbouring countries. The civil war, as well as erratic rainfall in some areas, has driven 3.9 million people into severe food insecurity, with malnutrition rates over emergency thresholds. Outbreaks of cholera, measles, and hepatitis E have strained an already overwhelmed health system. Humanitarian access remains restricted in many conflict areas and large numbers of people are accessible only by air drops. With GAC's support, Doctors without Borders Canada will address urgent humanitarian needs of up to 368,000 conflict-affected people in Jonglei, Upper Nile, Warrap, and Unity States, as well as Agok and the Southern Abyei Region. Project activities include: (1) providing primary health care through mobile health posts and fixed clinics and related training to traditional birth attendants; (2) providing comprehensive care for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, and treatment for patients with malaria, HIV or tuberculosis; (3) providing Ambulatory Therapeutic Feeding Centers (ATFCs) and referral services for those in need of secondary health care; and (4) providing life-saving surgery and treatments of severe malnourished patients.

March 2016 - Humanitarian need...s in Sudan are mainly caused by the effects of armed conflict, which drives displacement and food insecurity, but are also caused by flooding and droughts and weak governance. Sudan has recently experienced unpredictable rainfall patterns and desertification due to the El Nino effect, which as negatively affected agricultural and livestock production across the country. Food insecurity and malnutrition constitute a nationwide crisis, with seven out of the 18 states in Sudan experiencing global acute malnutrition rates at or above the emergency levels. Humanitarian needs in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States remain almost as high, with 5.4 million people considered to be in need of humanitarian assistance. Approximately 3.1 million people are internally displaced by conflict and civilian strife. With GAC's support, World Vision Canada is providing emergency health water, sanitation and hygiene services to up to 186,000 conflict-affected people in South Darfur. Project activities include: (1) constructing eight new boreholes with hand pumps, rehabilitating 16 non-functioning water points, and installing a solar powered water supply system; (2) training of eight community water committees, totaling 80 people and training 72 hand pump mechanics; (3) constructing emergency latrines for 400 vulnerable households and providing training to 40 people on latrine construction and 80 tool sets distributed; (4) providing protection services at two community centers; and (5) providing six primary health care clinics with essential medicines and emergency healthcare.

February 2016 - The humanitari...an situation in Syria continues to deteriorate as a result of the civil war and intensified violence in the country. The United Nations (UN) estimates that 13.5 million people inside Syria, including 6 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance. Of this total, 6.5 million are internally displaced; 4.5 million reside in hard-to-reach areas and an estimated 8.7 million are in need of food assistance. Basic social services, particularly health care and education, are heavily disrupted. 11 of 14 Governorates raise sexual and gender-based violence as a concern. Psychosocial distress as a result of the crisis is reported at a significant scale. The UN estimates that four out of five Syrians live in poverty and nearly two-thirds in extreme poverty. With the support of GAC and other donors, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is providing food assistance and livelihoods strengthening activities to up to 4.25 million vulnerable crisis-affected people in Syria. Project activities include: (1) providing supplementary feeding to address the critical nutrition needs of young children and pregnant and lactating women; (2) identifying vulnerable conflict-affected people and improving monitoring to ensure assistance reaches those most in need; and (3) supporting logistical efforts to reach people in besieged locations.

April 2016 - The humanitarian ...situation in Syria continues to deteriorate as a result of the civil war and intensified violence in the country. The United Nations estimates that 12.2 million people inside Syria, including 5.6 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance. Combined with over 4 million Syrians seeking refuge from the conflict in neighbouring countries, including Jordan, this is one of the largest numbers of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With GAC's support, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) responds to the education and health needs of children in Jordan and Syria. Project activities include: (1) supporting up to 35 Makani centres, which use a holistic approach to provide alternative education, psychosocial support and life skills, in Jordan and providing up to 16,000 out-of-school children with informal education opportunities, life-skills and psychosocial support services; (2) providing up to 3,500 vulnerable children in Jordan currently ineligible for formal education with catch-up classes; (3) increasing education opportunities and provision of school supplies or self-learning material to up to 400,000 vulnerable children in Syria, including those living in hard-to-reach and besieged areas; and (4) providing routine vaccination to approximately 800,000 conflict-affected at-risk children in Syria through a nation-wide immunization campaign.

September 2016 - The Syria Cri...sis has undermined security and stability in the Middle East and has resulted in unprecedented humanitarian needs. Now in its sixth year, the conflict in Syria has led to the worst displacement crisis in the world. Millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, stateless persons and asylum seekers in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Turkey are vulnerable to violence, food and income insecurity, health risks, and sexual and gender-based violence. Canada is helping to reduce the vulnerability of millions of crisis-affected people, especially women and children, through a broad spectrum of humanitarian assistance activities across Syria and in refugee hosting countries. GAC's multi-year humanitarian support to this project is contributing to improved health, living conditions, livelihoods and protection for conflict-affected populations in Syria. Project activities include: (1) providing food assistance and non-food essential relief items (NFI) to conflict-affected people; (2) supporting productive inputs for livelihoods of water and habitat support; (3) providing medical services through direct support to health centres and hospitals; and (4) providing physical rehabilitation support to vulnerable persons. / Septembre 2016 - La crise qui sévit en Syrie a miné la sécurité et la stabilité au Moyen-Orient et a créé des besoins humanitaires sans précédent.
