March 2016 - Haiti continues t...o make significant progress in recovering from the devastating earthquake of January 2010. However, critical needs and acute vulnerabilities remain for 1.6 million who require humanitarian assistance in 2016. An estimated 3 million people are suffering from food insecurity, including 2 million people experiencing severe food insecurity. Although the overall incidence of cholera has been reduced, it remains one of the largest epidemics in the world. Life-saving activities remain necessary to cut the transmission of the disease and ensure that adequate care is provided to the most vulnerable of the affected population. Haiti also ranks as one of the countries with the highest exposure to natural disasters with an estimated 60% of the population vulnerable to natural hazards. With GAC's support and other donors, Oxfam-Québec, in collaboration with Médecins du Monde, is improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, public health conditions and protection for up to 44,500 internally displaced, relocated and vulnerable people in Cité Soleil. Project activities include: (1) constructing and rehabilitating latrines and hand washing stations in schools; (2) implementing a solid waste disposal system; (3) training and deploying community health officers; (4) provision of medical supplies and equipment for treatment of waterborne diseases; and (5) providing education sessions on maternal and child health, transmission of waterborne diseases and sexual and gender-based violence.

July 2016 - July 2016 - The Un...ited Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) leads and coordinates international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide, protect internally displaced persons and those who are stateless, and search for lasting solutions to their plight. Widespread violence and criminal activities are forcing an increasing number of people, including women, girls and unaccompanied and separated children, to flee the Northern Triangle of Central America, thus leading to a dramatic increase in asylum applications from these countries in recent years. In 2015, an estimated 230,000 people were apprehended by authorities and returned to their countries of origin. With GAC's support, UNHCR responds to the needs of refugees and asylum-seekers from the NCTA. Project activities include: (1) strengthening the reception conditions, registration and access to legal assistance for vulnerable asylum-seekers and refugees; (2) improving access to essential services and respond to basic needs of the most vulnerable, including women, children and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence; (3) improving self-reliance and livelihoods; and (4) promoting the protection of at-risk girls and boys from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

September 2016 - The humanitar...ian situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate as armed clashes between Daesh and government forces drive displacement. Since January 2014, over 3.3 million people have been displaced and an additional 887,000 previously displaced people have returned to their homes that have often been destroyed, making it one of the largest cases of internal displacement in the world. The impending battle to retake Mosul - Iraq's second biggest city - from Daesh could result in over a million more IDPs. Persecution of minority groups is an ongoing concern as well as the protection of women and children who are at an increased risk of (and in some cases targeted for) sexual violence such as rape, as well as child, early and forced marriage. Canada is helping reduce the vulnerability of hundreds of thousands of crisis-affected people, especially women and children, through a broad spectrum of humanitarian assistance activities across Iraq. GAC's multi-year humanitarian support to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Iraq is contributing to addressing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and meeting the reproductive health (RH) needs of vulnerable women and girls. Project activities include: (1) distributing Rapid Response Mechanism Dignity Kits; (2) conducting SGBV case management for survivors; (3) providing mobile SGBV services along IDP corridors; (4) establishing women-only community centres and spaces; (5) disseminating information on SGBV risk mitigation and available services; (6) strengthening coordination mechanisms of multi-sectoral SGBV responses; (7) building the capacity of national SGBV service providers; (8) providing emergency life-saving RH services to new pregnant women, IDPs and returnees through mobile delivery rooms and clinics; (9) procuring medical equipment and RH kits; and (10) establishing RH clinics in new IDP camps. March 2016 - The humanitarian ...situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate. The violence between armed groups and government forces has displaced over 3.2 million people from their homes. An estimated 10 million people in Iraq have been affected by the conflict and are in need of humanitarian assistance. The capacity of the Government to respond to the basic needs of its citizens has been overwhelmed. In 2016, more people will be displaced by the conflict, while many will remain displaced in camps and host communities. However, there will also be growing numbers of people returning to areas no longer under the control of ISIL who will also need assistance to help restart their lives. With GAC's support, the project is building the resilience of IDPs, remainees and returnees, to enable them to cope with the impact of the crisis through social awareness and improved access to income. The project will: (1) provide primary, reproductive, maternal and child health care to up to 60,720 displaced people in camps; and (2) provide temporary employment activities and emergency livelihood assets to conflict-affected people returning to areas of origin.

With GAC's support, this project is addressing the basic needs of 6,300 vulnerable displaced persons in host communities in northern Iraq through support to re-establish livelihoods, and providing mental health care assistance to tackle the underlying factors of distress and mental health-related issues. The project will: (1) provide mental health services and psychosocial support to up to 6,000 vulnerable IDPs and host communities; (2) establish baby-friendly spaces to support babies and their mothers; and (3) provide up to 300 vulnerable conflict-affected households with small-scale grants to support the restoration of livelihoods.

With GAC's support, this project is supporting healthcare interventions in Dohuk and Erbil in northern Iraq, to strengthen primary health care and mental health services for IDPs and to relieve stress from government primary health facilities. The project will: (1) provide primary healthcare services for up to 22,214 conflict-affected persons at static clinics in camps; (2) provide primary health care services for up to 9,543 conflict-affected persons through flexible mobile medical units in camp and non-camp locations; 3) provide community outreach services through community mobilization, with the participation of up to 30,831 conflict-affected persons; 4) provide mental health and psychosocial support services in targeted health facilities for up to 5,857 conflict affected persons; and 5) provide support for existing Directorate of Health facilities through relevant trainings for emergency health response and management, reaching at least 68 beneficiaries. / N/A

December 2016 - The humanitari...an situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate. The violence between armed groups and government forces has displaced over 3 million people from their homes. The capacity of the Government to respond to the basic needs of its citizens has been overwhelmed. While Daesh has lost considerable territory in 2016, it is expected that humanitarian needs will remain significant in the coming years. More people will be displaced by the conflict, while many will remain displaced in camps and host communities. However, there will also be growing numbers of people returning to areas no longer under the control of Daesh who will also need assistance to help restart their lives. With GAC's support, the project is providing up to 61,000 conflict-affected people per year with comprehensive primary healthcare, including sexual and reproductive health care, mental health care, health promotion, essential medication, and emergency referral systems through static and mobile clinics. The project is also building capacity of national health actors to provide health services to Iraqis in a time of crisis though training and coaching for medical and paramedical staff, the provision of medical inputs, and the monitoring of and provision of feedback on national partners' activities./Décembre 2016 – La situation humanitaire en Irak continue de se dégrader.

March 2016 - This project incr...eases the International Committee of the Red Cross's (ICRC) capacity to prevent and reduce sexual violence in armed conflicts, particularly for women and girls who face increased vulnerability in situations of conflict and displacement. Rape and other forms of sexual violence may be used systematically as an act of reprisal and to create fear. The consequences are far reaching, affecting victims not only physically but psychologically and socially. For this reason, ICRC has launched a special initiative (2013-2016) to strengthen its response to sexual violence, with the intention of improving delivery of services, prevention of sexual violence, and improving the capacity of its staff to respond. GAC and other donors also provided support to this initiative in 2014 and 2015. The ICRC also works with States, weapon bearers, and religious and traditional leaders to promote awareness. In this regard, the ICRC has a unique role working in conflict zones, with access to areas inaccessible by many other organizations and with greater credibility in advocating for the protection of civilians, including vulnerable women and girls.

March 2016 - The humanitarian ...situation in Syria continues to deteriorate as a result of the civil war and intensified violence in the country. The United Nations estimates that 13.5 million people inside Syria, including 6 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance. Combined with over 4.2 million Syrians seeking refuge from the conflict in neighbouring countries, this is one of the largest numbers of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With GAC's support, World Relief Canada is assisting up to 4,500 pregnant and lactating women and newborns to access essential and lifesaving health services and 6,750 caregivers with training. Project activities include: (1) providing cash-for-health support to vulnerable persons in need of emergency medical care; (2) implementing a quality community health programme focused on increasing community capacity to prevent and identify illness and reducing barriers to service access; (3) providing sexual and gender-based violence protection and trauma care; and (4) increasing the capacity of Community Health Volunteers, medical staff and community members.

September 2016 - The Syria Cri...sis has undermined security and stability in the Middle East and has resulted in unprecedented humanitarian needs. Now in its sixth year, the conflict in Syria has led to the worst displacement crisis in the world. Millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, stateless persons and asylum seekers in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Turkey are vulnerable to violence, food and income insecurity, health risks, and sexual and gender-based violence. Canada is helping to reduce the vulnerability of millions of crisis-affected people, especially women and children, through a broad spectrum of humanitarian assistance activities across Syria and in refugee hosting countries. GAC's multi-year humanitarian support to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) contributes to improved health, living conditions, livelihoods and protection for vulnerable populations in Jordan and Lebanon. In both countries, project activities include: (1) providing food assistance and non-food essential relief items to conflict-affected people; (2) providing emergency cash assistance, and water and shelter support; and (3) providing medical services by directly supporting health centres and hospitals. In Lebanon, ICRC is providing physical rehabilitation support to vulnerable people.

November 2016 – With the Syr...ian conflict in its sixth year and the security situation in Iraq continuing to deteriorate, Jordan has seen a constant increase in the number of refugees seeking asylum on its territory. Jordan now hosts over 650,000 Syrian refugees and more than 58,000 Iraqis; a total equal to nearly 10% of the country's population. Four-fifths of registered refugees are living in urban areas among Jordanians, creating additional burdens on the public sector and the local economy. Urban refugees are struggling to meet needs related to rent, food, health, shelter, work, clothes, education, and items for children, while the needs of vulnerable Jordanians have risen in parallel, as increased competition for resources strains the Jordanian government's ability to meet the needs of its citizens. With GAC's support, the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is reaching up to 160,600 vulnerable Syrian and Iraqi refugees, as well as vulnerable Jordanians from host communities, with emergency health assistance.

Combined with over 4.2 million Syrians seeking refuge from the conflict in neighbouring countries, this is the largest number of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With GAC's support, World Relief Canada is assisting up to 50,250 conflict-affected people in Lebanon to access essential and lifesaving health services and 69,570 through education. Project activities include: (1) providing quality health care, including essential health services, medicines and equipment to vulnerable conflict-affected people; (2) strengthening national capacity to respond to ongoing health needs; and (3) increasing awareness and practice of key preventive health, nutrition and hygiene behaviours among vulnerable refugee households and Lebanese host communities.

October 2016 - The Syria Crisi...s has undermined security and stability in the Middle East and has resulted in unprecedented humanitarian needs. Canada is helping to reduce the vulnerability of millions of crisis-affected people, including Palestinian refugees from Syria, and especially women and children, through a broad spectrum of humanitarian assistance activities across Syria and in refugee hosting countries. GAC's support to UNRWA's emergency response in Syria and Lebanon is contributing to meeting the needs of Palestinian refugees. In Syria, project activities include: (1) providing emergency assistance to meet the basic needs of up to 430,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria, including food, healthcare, water and protection services; and (2) supporting up to 43,000 Palestinian refugee children in Syria in continuing their school education. In Lebanon, project activities include: (1) providing emergency assistance to meet the basic needs of up to 42,000 Palestinian refugees from Syria in Lebanon, including food, healthcare, water, and protection services; and (2) supporting up to 6,000 Palestinian refugee children from Syria in Lebanon to continue their education at UNRWA schools.
