September 2017 – Category 5 ...hurricane Irma hit the Caribbean and south-eastern United States between September 6 and 14. It was the largest storm ever to make landfall in the Atlantic. Hurricane Maria, also a category 5 storm, followed closely between September 18 and 26. The two hurricanes caused widespread damage, flooding and displacement throughout the Caribbean region. A number of countries suffered significant devastation, including damages to power and water supply lines, agriculture, telecommunications and infrastructure such as health centres, bridges and roadways. More information on the humanitarian situation is expected as relief efforts get underway.With GAC's support, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is helping to meet the immediate health needs of hurricane-affected people in the region, including specific support to Dominica. Project activities include: (1) provision of health personnel, essential medical and health supplies and equipment; (2) support for disease surveillance for early detection and timely management of disease outbreaks; (3) provision of equipment and supplies for clean water; (4) provision of life-saving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) interventions, including procurement and distribution of SRH kits for emergency obstetric care, clinical care for rape victims, prevention of sexually transmitted infections and HIV and medical supplies to targeted health facilities./Septembre 2017 – L'ouragan Irma (catégorie 5) a frappé les Caraïbes et le sud-est des États-Unis entre le 6 et le 14 septembre. Project activities include: (1) provision of health personnel, essential medical and health supplies and equipment; (2) support for disease surveillance for early detection and timely management of disease outbreaks; (3) provision of equipment and supplies for clean water; (4) provision of life-saving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) interventions, including procurement and distribution of SRH kits for emergency obstetric care, clinical care for rape victims, prevention of sexually transmitted infections and HIV and medical supplies to targeted health facilities./Septembre 2017 – L'ouragan Irma (catégorie 5) a frappé les Caraïbes et le sud-est des États-Unis entre le 6 et le 14 septembre. Il s'agissait de l'ouragan le plus puissant jamais enregistré dans l'Atlantique. L'ouragan Maria, également de catégorie 5, suivait de près et a frappé les 18 et 26 septembre. Les deux ouragans ont causé des dommages, des inondations et des déplacements considérables dans la région des Caraïbes. Un certain nombre de pays ont subi d'énormes dévastations, dont l'endommagement des câbles électriques et des conduites d'approvisionnement en eau et des dommages touchant l'agriculture, les télécommunications et les infrastructures comme les centres de santé, les ponts et les routes. With the support of Canada and... other donors, the United Nations Police (UNPOL) is contributing to greater representation of women in UN peacekeeping missions by training up to 200 female police officers through specialized training. UNPOL activities include: (1) the development of workshops in both French and English for female police candidates; (2) the delivery of four regional workshops on increasing opportunities for women in UNPOL leadership positions (one each in Asia and Latin America and two in Africa); and (3) mentoring of participants for senior positions in UN peacekeeping missions and headquarters.Conflict and post-conflict countries are often characterized by a collapse of public law and order. UNPOL serves to protect civilians, provides electoral and border security and management, limits the effects of transnational organized crime and investigates and prevents cases of sexual and gender-based violence. Despite over 13,000 police deployed in 17 different missions, just over 10 percent of deployed police are female. In response to the rising demand for female officers, in particular from francophone countries, the UN launched a global effort to increase the representation of female police officers in UN peacekeeping operations through mentoring, training and better preparing senior female police officers./Avec le soutien du Canada et d'autres donateurs, la Police des Nations Unies contribue à une plus grande représentation des femmes dans les missions de maintien de la paix des Nations Unies en formant jusqu'à 200 agentes de police par l'intermédiaire d'une formation spécialisée. This project aims to close rem...aining camps where displaced people live in Haiti in a sustainable and safe way to improve their living conditions. The project has two components: (1) the relocation of 7,000 families with subsidies for housing support; and (2) the integration of three camps in urban areas, benefiting 1,500 families (about 5,100 people). Project activities include: (1) the registration of displaced people living in camps, monitoring of the identified housing and payment of subsidies to families; (2) a support service (psychosocial and medical); (3) the establishment of awareness workshops and training activities on health and housing rights; (4) technical and administrative support on the status of the targeted camps for urban integration; (5) development of community plans for urbanisation; (6) improvement of secure physical infrastructure; (7) implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects; and (8) creation of income generating activities./Ce projet vise à finaliser la fermeture de camps où vivent les personnes déplacées en Haïti de façon durable et sécuritaire afin d'améliorer leurs conditions de vie. Le projet a deux composantes : 1) la relocalisation de 7 000 familles à l'aide de subventions pour le soutien au logement et 2) l'intégration de trois camps en milieu urbain, bénéficiant à 1 500 familles (environ 5 100 personnes). This project aims to prevent h...uman trafficking and protect vulnerable Haitian migrants especially children and women. Haiti is a major source of migrants and every year, thousands of Haitians seek better socio-economic opportunities in the Dominican Republic. The two countries share 360 km of extremely porous border, with only four official border points. The majority of migratory movements from Haiti are made from informal and illegal crossing points. Lacking legal status and documentation, illegal border crossers frequently fall victim to violence, abuse or exploitation, especially children and women.With GAC's support, the International Organization for Migration is increasing protection mechanisms in border areas to combat human trafficking, especially child and women trafficking and exploitation. Project activities include: (1) training 400 local governmental officers and civil society actors on standardized procedures and protection principles (including prevention and reintegration aspects); (2) establishing a common standardized data management system for the registration of migrants; (3) establishing and operationalizing four border resource centres at official crossing points; (4) rehabilitating or refurbishing eight reception centres in Ouanaminthe, Belladere and Fonds-Parisien; (5) providing reintegration assistance at border to 2,000 vulnerable migrants (e.g. emergency shelter and domestic items); (6) providing adequate livelihoods assistance/education grants to 500 vulnerable migrants; and (7) developing a total of 16 awareness/sensitization campaigns targeting more than 737,000 Haitians living in bordering communes on the dangers of irregular border crossings and on how to report cases of exploitation and abuse./ Ce projet vise à prévenir la traite des personnes et à protéger les migrants haïtiens vulnérables, particulièrement les femmes et les enfants. De nombreux Haïtiens quittent leur pays pour s'établir ailleurs et, chaque année, des milliers d'entre eux vont en République dominicaine dans l'espoir d'y améliorer leur situation socio-économique. Les deux pays ont une frontière commune extrêmement poreuse de 360 km qui ne compte que quatre postes frontaliers officiels. October 2016 – On October 4,... Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 storm, tore through the Caribbean causing widespread damage, flooding and displacement in Haiti. Hurricane Matthew has resulted in the largest humanitarian crisis in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. An estimated 1.2 million people have been affected.With GAC's support, Doctors of the World Canada is addressing immediate health needs in areas affected by Hurricane Matthew. Project activities include: (1) providing medical care in health centres and through mobile medical teams; (2) treating cases of cholera and other water and vector borne diseases; (3) epidemic surveillance and the provision of surge medical personnel support (doctors and nurses) in case of new outbreaks; (4) psychosocial support and treatment for victims of sexual and gender based violence; and (5) conducting public health and hygiene awareness campaigns at the community level./Octobre 2016 – Le 4 octobre, l'ouragan Matthew, une tempête de catégorie 4, a balayé les Caraïbes et causé des dommages matériels, des inondations et des déplacements de population massifs à Haïti. This project aims to provide a... safe and healthy learning environment for 42,352 Jordanian and Syrian refugee girls and boys attending public schools, and 265 education staff in Amman, Irbid, and Zarqa governorates. The three governorates are hosting the largest number of Syrian refugees in Jordan. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating 75 public schools to meet Ministry of Education safety and security standards and training school-community committees for ongoing maintenance and stewardship; (2) providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Education to develop training material on environmental health and non-violent communication and (3) providing training and capacity development for 40 Ministry of Education staff identified to act as trainers of education staff in public schools on the topics outlined above./Ce projet vise à offrir un environnement d'apprentissage sain et sécuritaire à 42 352 jeunes jordaniens et jeunes réfugiés syriens qui fréquentent l'école publique, et à 265 membres du personnel enseignant des gouvernorats d'Amman, d'Irbid et de Zarqa. Ces gouvernorats accueillent le plus grand nombre de réfugiés syriens en Jordanie. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) réhabilitation de 75 écoles publiques afin que celles-ci répondent aux exigences du ministère de l'Éducation au chapitre de la sécurité et formation de comités école-collectivité pour assurer leur intendance et leur entretien continus; 2) prestation d'une assistance technique au ministère de l'Éducation pour élaborer du matériel de formation sur la santé environnementale et la communication non violente; 3) formation et renforcement des capacités de 40 employés du ministère de l'Éducation qui seront appelés à former à leur tour le personnel enseignant dans les écoles publiques sur les sujets susmentionnés.

September 2017 – Successive ...earthquakes, including one of a magnitude of 7.1, struck Mexico and affected more than 1.5 million people. Thousands of families were left homeless, and numerous buildings were destroyed. Mexico City was heavily affected and a state of emergency was declared for 122 municipalities in the state of Puebla and 33 municipalities in the state of Morelos. The Mexican Red Cross Society has deployed more than 12,000 volunteers to respond to the crisis, but the needs are extensive.With GAC's support, the Canadian Red Cross is providing support for the relief operations of the Mexican Red Cross Society. Project activities include: (1) providing health care services such as pre-hospital and hospital care; (2) helping to reunite families with separated relatives; and (3) distributing relief supplies (kitchen kits, hygiene kits, shelter supplies)./Septembre 2017 – Des séismes successifs, dont un d'une magnitude de 7,1, ont frappé le Mexique et touché plus de 1,5 million de personnes. Des milliers de familles se sont retrouvées sans abri et de nombreux immeubles ont été détruits. Mexico a été lourdement touchée et 122 municipalités de l'État de Puebla et 33 de l'État de Morelos ont déclaré l'état d'urgence. La Société de la Croix-Rouge mexicaine a déployé plus de 12 000 bénévoles pour répondre à la crise, mais les besoins sont énormes.Grâce au soutien d'AMC, la Croix-Rouge canadienne contribue aux opérations de secours de la Société de la Croix-Rouge mexicaine. Parmi les efforts déployés dans le cadre de ce projet, mentionnons : 1) la prestation de services de santé comme des soins préhospitaliers et hospitaliers; 2) l'aide à la réunification des familles; et 3) la distribution de fournitures de secours (trousses d'accessoires de cuisine, trousses d'hygiène, fournitures d'urgence).

March 2017 – In 2017, an est...imated 7.5 million people across South Sudan are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection across the country as a result of armed conflict, inter-communal violence, economic crisis, disease outbreaks and climatic shocks. Approximately 1.85 million people are internally displaced within South Sudan and over 1.4 million South Sudanese have sought protection in neighbouring countries. The civil war, as well as erratic rainfall in some areas, have resulted in 4.6 million people projected to require food assistance, with malnutrition rates over emergency thresholds. Outbreaks of cholera, measles, and hepatitis E have strained an already overwhelmed health system. Humanitarian access remains restricted in many conflict areas and large numbers of people are accessible only by air drops.With GAC's support, Doctors without Borders Canada is addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of up to 262,000 conflict-affected people in Malakal, Wau Silluk, Mellut, Boma State. Project activities include: (1) providing primary health care including outpatient facility, Expanded Program on Immunizations, Kala Azar, malaria, HIV services to the target population through mobile health posts and fixed clinics; (2) providing Ambulatory Therapeutic Feeding Centers and referral services for those in need of secondary health care; (3) providing life-saving surgery and treatments of severe malnourished patients; (4) providing comprehensive care for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, and treatment for patients with malaria, HIV or tuberculosis./ a venir

This project contributes to th...e long-term strengthening of the resilience of individuals, households, communities and essential social service delivery systems in targeted regions of Syria dealing with the effects of protracted conflict. Project activities include: (1) installing water pumping units and training of water technicians on water management practices and protocols; (2) training of health workers on communicable disease control, maternal and new born child health (MNCH) and health management; (3) establishing safe education spaces and training of teachers on active learning, early childhood education and psychosocial support; (4) providing various seeds, feed and veterinary kits for vulnerable livestock farmers; and (5) developing and delivering training materials in areas such as household electrical wiring.The project reach is 150,000 individuals through stabilized access to clean water supplies, increased access to quality health care services, increased engagement of farmers and production of local food, and improved access to education and psychosocial support for children and their families./ Ce projet contribue au renforcement à long terme de la résilience des personnes, des ménages, des collectivités et des systèmes de prestation de services sociaux essentiels dans des régions ciblées de la Syrie qui sont aux prises avec les effets du conflit prolongé. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) installation d'unités de pompage de l'eau et formation des techniciens de l'eau sur les pratiques et les protocoles de gestion de l'eau; 2) formation des travailleurs de la santé sur la lutte contre les maladies transmissibles, la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants et la gestion de la santé; 3) établissement d'espaces d'enseignement sécuritaires et formation d'enseignants sur l'apprentissage actif, l'éducation à la petite enfance et le soutien psychosocial; 4) distribution de diverses semences, d'aliments pour animaux et de trousses de soins vétérinaires à des éleveurs de bétail vulnérables; 5) élaboration et distribution dans certaines zones de documents de formation, notamment sur le câblage électrique domestique.Ce projet profite à 150 000 personnes grâce à un accès stabilisé à un approvisionnement en eau salubre, à un accès élargi à des services de soins de santé de qualité, à une participation accrue des agriculteurs, à une production plus grande d'aliments locaux et à un meilleur accès à une éducation et à un soutien psychosocial pour des enfants et leur famille.
