March 2014 - Varying levels of... political and inter-communal violence in East Africa and the Horn of Africa continue to cause significant displacement, both within the affected countries and across national borders. In addition, cycles of chronic drought, as well as localised seasonal flooding and rising global food prices, also continue to drive high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition across the region. Human rights abuses, at the hands of both governments and other armed groups, also continue to be a significant concern in the region. With DFATD support, the ICRC is addressing the above concerns in Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, and Tanzania. Specific areas of activity include emergency response (provision of water, sanitation, hygiene, health care, shelter), support for livelihoods and resilience activities, and family reunification for separated or displaced households.

March 2014 - Internal conflict... in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR) continues to destabilize the region, causing significant population movements and widespread humanitarian needs. Since the beginning of December 2013, more than 47,000 people from CAR have fled to neighbouring countries, bringing the total of CAR refugees in the region to 280,654. At the same time, since mid-December, the conflict in South Sudan has caused over 60,000 South Sudanese to become refugees in Uganda. Years of protracted conflict in the DRC have also produced 450,000 Congolese refugees in the region. With the support of DFATD and other donors, ICRC is providing protection support and life-saving assistance to people affected by armed conflict in the region. Activities include: (1) rehabilitating water networks and wells and providing safe drinking water and sanitation services for up to 840,500 people; (2) providing agricultural or livelihoods supplies and technical expertise to up to 150,000 vulnerable people; (3) distributing essential household items to up to 145,000 conflict-affected people; (4) providing medicines, medical supplies, and support to staff in 12 health centres and 5 hospitals; (5) supporting 40 counselling centres and 2 hospitals to provide psychosocial assistance to survivors of sexual violence; (6) providing support to national Red Cross societies to trace and restore family linkages between people who have been separated due to conflict or disaster; (7) improving living conditions for 36,700 people detained by armed forces and police, particularly women and children; and, (8) raising awareness of humanitarian principles and international human rights law.

March 2014 - The United Nation...s High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) leads and coordinates international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide, protect internally displaced persons and those who are stateless, and search for lasting solutions to their plight. With the support of DFATD and other donors, this project provides protection and assistance to refugees, internally displaced people and other vulnerable groups in Latin America and the Caribbean. Project activities include: (1) protecting and assisting 5.2 million internally displaced Colombians, 500,000 Colombian refugees, 100,000 refugees, and other vulnerable groups from the region; (2) providing health, education, and other essential services to refugees in the region; (3) providing local integration, naturalization and other permanent residence solutions, including resettlement; and (4) advocating for improved protection standards throughout the region. / Mars 2014 - Le Bureau du Haut Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés (HCR) dirige et coordonne des interventions internationales partout dans le monde visant à protéger les réfugiés, à régler les problèmes qui les concernent, à protéger les personnes déplacées dans leur pays et les apatrides et à trouver des solutions à long terme pour leur venir en aide. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, ce projet offre une protection et une aide aux réfugiés, aux personnes déplacées et aux autres groupes vulnérables en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes. This project aims to improve t...he Red Cross Movement s ability to prepare for and respond, in a timely and effective manner, to the emergency needs of vulnerable populations affected by natural disasters and complex humanitarian situations, particularly in the Americas. The initiative includes three components: (1) Establishing two Emergency Response Units (ERUs) which can be deployed in response to requests for international medical assistance. The ERUs include basic medical and infrastructure services and medical experts to help ensure the urgent health needs of vulnerable populations are met; (2) Recruiting, training and deploying Canadian health and disaster management experts to help strengthen the Red Cross Movement s capacity in humanitarian response and disaster management; (3) Working with targeted National Red Cross Societies in the Americas to help build their disaster preparedness capacity through contingency planning and early warning systems, for example. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la capacité du Mouvement de la Croix-Rouge de se préparer et répondre de façon rapide et efficace aux besoins urgents des populations vulnérables, touchées par des catastrophes naturelles et des situations humanitaires complexes, surtout dans les Amériques. L initiative comporte trois volets : 1) La mise sur pied de deux unités d intervention d urgence qui peuvent être déployées à la suite de demandes pour une assistance médicale internationale. Ces unités fournissent des services médicaux et d infrastructure de base ainsi que des services d experts médicaux pour assurer la réponse aux besoins en santé urgents des populations vulnérables; 2) Le recrutement, la formation et le déploiement de spécialistes canadiens dans les domaines de la santé et de la gestion des catastrophes afin de renforcer la capacité d intervention du Mouvement de la Croix-Rouge en matière de l aide humanitaire et de la gestion des catastrophes; 3) La collaboration avec certaines sociétés nationales de la Croix-Rouge dans les Amériques afin de renforcer leur capacité de prévention des désastres à l aide de la planification d urgence et de systèmes d alerte rapide, par exemple.

February 2014 - The complex hu...manitarian situation in South Sudan has become much worse since fighting broke out between government and anti-government forces in Juba, the capital city, in December 2013. The United Nations estimates that over 1,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands more wounded. The fighting has displaced some 740,000 people from their homes within South Sudan, and more than 123,400 South Sudanese have sought protection in neighbouring countries (Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda). Agricultural production has been disrupted, and essential basic services, such as water points, schools, and medical facilities have been shut down or destroyed in the fighting . Immediate humanitarian assistance needs include food, health care, shelter, protection, water, sanitation and hygiene. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is providing emergency assistance to about 589,960 conflict-affected people throughout South Sudan. The project aims to meet urgent needs by: providing people with access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities that ensure the proper treatment and disposal of sewage wastewater; providing one-time food rations that last for one month; providing emergency shelter and basic relief items, such as clothing and personal hygiene products; providing medical supplies, including vaccines, equipment and training to one hospital and two health facilities; and providing protection to survivors of sexual violence.

Expected results
The expected ...outputs for this project include: 250,000 people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities; up to 60,000 displaced people and returnees receive one-off rations for one month; up to 72,000 beneficiaries receive emergency shelter and other basic relief items; three health facilities, including one hospital, receive medical supplies and equipment, vaccines, and staff receive training; and survivors of sexual violence receive protection services. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people, especially women and children.

With the support of DFATD and other donors, the World Food Programme United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (WFP/ UNHAS) is providing safe, reliable, responsive and efficient passenger air transport services throughout South Sudan. The air services are available to United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and donor agencies. The UNHAS also transports light, urgently needed and essential supplies to remote locations for humanitarian organizations to use in their relief operations. In addition, UNHAS carries out emergency medical and security evacuations for humanitarian workers in remote locations.

March 2014 - The complex human...itarian situation in South Sudan has become much worse since fighting broke out between government and anti-government forces in December 2013. The fighting has displaced some 710,000 people within South Sudan, and more than 170,000 South Sudanese have sought protection in neighbouring countries. Agricultural production has been disrupted, and essential basic services, such as safe drinking water, schools, and medical facilities have been shut down or destroyed in the fighting. Humanitarian assistance needs throughout 2014 include food, health care, shelter, protection services, water, sanitation and hygiene. With DFATD s support, Doctors without Borders Canada is providing emergency health care for 40,000 conflict-affected people in Warrap State and in the Abyei Administrative Area, South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) establishing emergency mobile health clinics in Abyei; (2) providing emergency obstetric services and reproductive health care to 1,600 pregnant women; (3) prepositioning emergency vaccines and supplemental food for treating malnutrition for 40,000 people; and (4) increasing the capacity of the Agok hospital through training of staff. / Mars 2014 - La situation humanitaire complexe au Soudan du Sud s est grandement détériorée depuis que des violences ont éclaté, en décembre 2013, entre le gouvernement et les forces qui lui sont opposées. La situation a forcé quelque 710 000 personnes à se déplacer à l intérieur du Soudan du Sud, et plus de 170 000 Sud-Soudanais ont cherché refuge dans des pays voisins. La production agricole a cessé et les infrastructures de services essentiels, tels que le réseau d approvisionnement en eau potable, les écoles et les installations médicales, ont été fermées ou détruites en raison des violences. Parmi les besoins humanitaires recensés en 2014, notons les aliments, les soins de santé, les abris, les services de protection, l eau, l assainissement et l hygiène. Avec le soutien du MAECD, Médecins Sans Frontières Canada offre des soins de santé d urgence à 40 000 personnes touchées par le conflit dans l État de Warrap et dans la zone administrative d Abyei (Soudan du Sud). Parmi les activités de ce projet : 1) établir des cliniques mobiles d urgence à Abyei; 2) offrir des services obstétricaux et des soins de santé génésique d urgence à 1 600 femmes enceintes; 3) constituer des réserves d urgence de vaccins et de suppléments alimentaires pour traiter la malnutrition au profit de 40 000 personnes; 4) accroître la capacité de l hôpital Agok par la formation de son personnel.

It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. As the global cluster lead agency for logistics and emergency telecommunications, WFP also plays a major role in providing common services for the humanitarian community. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the World Food Programme s Humanitarian Air Service (WFP-UNHAS) is providing safe, reliable, responsive and efficient air service for humanitarian agencies in numerous countries. It transports passengers undertaking humanitarian work, carries light cargo for humanitarian agencies, and carries out emergency medical and security evacuations. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En tant que responsable sectoriel mondial en matière de logistique et de télécommunications d urgence, le PAM joue également un rôle de premier plan dans la prestation de services communs à la communauté humanitaire. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le Service aérien d aide humanitaire du Programme alimentaire mondial assure le transport aérien sécuritaire, fiable, souple et efficient du personnel humanitaire dans de nombreux pays. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 16 million vulnerable people in several countries in Asia in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5, pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work ; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; (5) helping communities manage acute malnutrition; and (6) supporting school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des aliments aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque 16 millions de personnes vulnérables dans plusieurs pays d Asie en 2014. En cas de situation d urgence humanitaire, le PAM s attache principalement à offrir de l assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. March 2014 - More than 6.1 mil...lion people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Sudan, 1.7 million more than in 2013. Conflict, poverty, environmental hazards and weak governance are all contributing to insecurity and internal displacement. An estimated 5 million people, concentrated mostly in Darfur, South Kordofan, Blue Nile and eastern Sudan, require essential, life-saving assistance. With DFATD s support, World Vision Canada is providing assistance to 148,337 conflict-affected people in South Darfur, Sudan. Project activities include: (1) drilling five new boreholes and repairing 10 broken hand pumps, benefitting over 7,500 people; (2) constructing 500 household latrines, including bathing facilities for vulnerable households; (3) providing hygiene training to 50 volunteers, and distributing hygiene kits to 10,000 people; and (4) equipping health clinics with essential medicines and supplies in four communities to ensure comprehensive reproductive health care. / Mars 2014 - Plus de 6,1 millions de personnes ont besoin d une aide humanitaire au Soudan, soit 1,7 million de personnes de plus qu en 2013. Le conflit, la pauvreté, les dangers environnementaux et la faible gouvernance sont autant de facteurs qui contribuent à l insécurité et aux déplacements internes. On estime que 5 millions de personnes requièrent une aide humanitaire vitale, surtout au Darfour, au Kordofan du Sud, dans le Nil Bleu et dans l Est du Soudan. Avec le soutien du MAECD, Vision Mondiale Canada offre une aide à 148 337 personnes touchées par le conflit au Darfour-Sud (Soudan). Parmi les activités de ce projet : 1) forer cinq nouveaux puits et réparer 10 pompes manuelles brisées, au profit de plus de 7 500 personnes; 2) construire 500 latrines privées, y compris des installations pour se laver destinées aux ménages vulnérables; 3) offrir une formation en matière d hygiène à 50 volontaires et distribuer des trousses d hygiène à 10 000 personnes; 4) doter en médicaments et fournitures essentiels des cliniques de quatre collectivités pour garantir la prestation de soins complets dans le domaine de la santé génésique.

March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. As the global cluster lead agency for logistics and emergency telecommunications, WFP also plays a major role in providing common services for the humanitarian community. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the World Food Programme s Humanitarian Air Service (WFP-UNHAS) is providing safe, reliable, responsive and efficient air service for humanitarian agencies in numerous countries. It transports passengers undertaking humanitarian work, carries light cargo for humanitarian agencies, and carries out emergency medical and security evacuations. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En tant que responsable sectoriel mondial en matière de logistique et de télécommunications d urgence, le PAM joue également un rôle de premier plan dans la prestation de services communs à la communauté humanitaire. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le Service aérien d aide humanitaire du Programme alimentaire mondial assure le transport aérien sécuritaire, fiable, souple et efficient du personnel humanitaire dans de nombreux pays. Il assure le transport de travailleurs humanitaires et de marchandises légères pour les organismes humanitaires, et assure des services d évacuation pour des raisons médicales et de sécurité.

September 2013 - The humanitar...ian situation in Syria has rapidly deteriorated over the past year as a result of the civil war in the country. The United Nations estimates that 100,000 people have been killed, and hundreds of thousands more wounded, due to the violence. Within Syria, some 6.8 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 4.25 million of whom are internally displaced. In addition, over 2 million Syrian refugees are living in host countries in the region. By the end of 2013, the United Nations estimates that 10 million people in Syria will need humanitarian assistance and a further 3.55 million refugees from Syria will have fled to host countries, where resources are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people needing assistance. With DFATD s support, the project is providing lifesaving humanitarian assistance to 35,000 internally displaced Syrians and vulnerable host populations in Syria. Project activities include providing: primary health care with a focus on maternal and child health; and safe water and sanitation. / Septembre 2013 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie s est rapidement détériorée au cours de la dernière année en raison de la guerre civile qui y fait rage. D après les Nations Unies, 100 000 personnes ont été tuées et des centaines de milliers d autres ont été blessés à cause de la violence des affrontements. À l intérieur de la Syrie, quelque 6,8 millions d habitants ont besoin d aide humanitaire, dont 4,25 millions de personnes qui sont déplacées à l intérieur du pays. En outre, plus de 2 millions de Syriens se sont réfugiés dans d autres pays de la région. Les Nations Unies estiment que, d ici la fin de 2013, 10 millions de Syriens auront besoin d une aide humanitaire et que 3,55 millions de personnes de plus auront cherché refuge dans des pays d accueil, où les ressources sont de plus en plus sollicitées en raison de la migration des gens dans le besoin. Grâce au soutien du MAECD, le projet fournit une aide humanitaire essentielle à 35 000 Syriens déplacés à l intérieur de leur pays et aux populations d accueil vulnérables en Syrie. Parmi les activités du projet : fournir des soins de santé primaires en mettant l accent sur la santé des mères et des enfants, ainsi que des services d approvisionnement en eau et d assainissement.

Expected results
The expected ...outputs for this project include: 300 latrines and washing facilities constructed; 5,000 hygiene kits, 2,000 baby kits, 5,000 mosquito nets, 5,000 household waste storage bins, and 10,000 water containers distributed; water chlorination for 5,000 households provided; three functional Primary Health Care facilities with essential health supplies established; three functional safe spaces for women, adolescents and young children established; and one ambulance refurbished and staffed. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people, especially women and children.

In addition, more than 2 million Syrian refugees are living in host countries in the region. By the end of 2013, the United Nations estimates that 10 million people in Syria will need humanitarian assistance and a further 3.55 million refugees from Syria will have fled to host countries, where resources are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people needing assistance. With DFATD s support, the project is addressing the critical humanitarian needs of up to 15,000 crisis-affected families in Syria (approximately 75,000 people), including internally-displaced people and residents of host communities. Project activities include: distributing water vouchers to purchase safe drinking water; providing cash transfers to help with the cost of accommodation in host family housing and the purchase of essential household items, including cooking fuel, medicine, and medical supplies; and providing cash transfers to cover school expenses and supplies. / Septembre 2013 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie s est rapidement détériorée au cours de la dernière année en raison de la guerre civile qui y fait rage. Within Syria, some 9.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 6.5 million of whom are internally displaced. In addition, over 2.4 million Syrian refugees are registered and living in host countries in the region. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the impact of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of affected people needing assistance. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is providing food assistance to up to 4.25 million vulnerable crisis-affected people across Syria and supplementary feeding to address the critical nutrition needs of up to 255,000 young children and pregnant and lactating women. It is also improving its ability to identify vulnerable people and increasing its monitoring to make sure it is reaching those in need. / Février 2014 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie continue de se détériorer en raison de la guerre civile qui fait rage dans ce pays. D'après les Nations Unies, plus de 130 000 personnes ont été tuées et des centaines de milliers d'autres ont été blessées à cause de la violence des affrontements. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the impact of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of affected people needing assistance. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is providing core relief items to up to 3.5 million internally displaced and crisis-affected people in Syria, emergency shelter to up to 91,000 internally displaced people, and improve access to primary and secondary healthcare for up to 700,000 affected people. UNHCR is also trying to protect up to 489,000 persons with specific needs, particularly women and children. / Février 2014 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie continue de se détériorer en raison de la guerre civile qui fait rage dans ce pays. D'après les estimations des Nations Unies, plus de 130 000 personnes ont été tuées et des centaines de milliers d'autres ont été blessées à cause de la violence des affrontements. The United Nations estimates that more than 130,000 people have been killed, with hundreds of thousands more wounded, due to the violence. Within Syria, some 9.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 6.5 million of whom are internally displaced. In addition, over 2.4 million Syrian refugees are registered and living in host countries in the region. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the impact of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of affected people needing assistance. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) is supporting urgent primary health care, nutrition supplements and trauma care in Syria. Within Syria, some 9.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 6.5 million of whom are internally displaced. In addition, over 2.4 million Syrian refugees are registered and living in host countries in the region. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the impact of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of affected people needing assistance. With the support of DFATD and other donors, UNICEF is: (1) providing conflict-affected people with safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene items; (2) reducing the spread of water-related diseases by supporting improved sanitation practices, community mobilization, hygiene promotion, and delivery of hygiene products and services on a sustainable and equitable basis to all conflict-affected people; and (3) supporting primary healthcare services for 1.98 million women and children and providing nutrition services to up to 900,000 children, as well as pregnant, and lactating women. / Février 2014 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie continue de se détériorer en raison de la guerre civile qui fait rage dans ce pays. The United Nations estimates that more than 130,000 people have been killed, with hundreds of thousands more wounded, due to the violence. Within Syria, some 9.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 6.5 million of whom are internally displaced. In addition, over 2.4 million Syrian refugees are registered and living in host countries in the region. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the impact of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of affected people needing assistance. With DFATD's support, this project is increasing protection for up to 17,570 people in Damascus and rural Damascus. Project activities include: (1) providing timely and confidential medical responses, case management and referral services to survivors of gender-based violence; (2) providing mental health care, counselling and psychosocial services to conflict-affected people, particularly adolescent girls, boys and women; (3) providing safe spaces, recreation and life skills to conflict-affected at-risk youth and their families; and (4) providing life-saving basic services to war-wounded or conflict-affected people with disabilities. / Février 2014 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie continue de se détériorer en raison de la guerre civile qui fait rage dans ce pays. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) fournir en temps utile et en toute confidence des soins médicaux ainsi que des services de prise en charge et d'aiguillage aux survivants de la violence sexuelle; 2) offrir des services psychosociaux, de santé mentale et de counseling à des personnes touchées par le conflit, particulièrement des adolescentes, des garçons et des femmes; 3) offrir des endroits sécuritaires, des loisirs et une formation sur les aptitudes à la vie quotidienne aux jeunes à risque touchés par le conflit et à leur famille; 4) offrir des services de base essentiels à la survie aux blessés de guerre ou aux personnes handicapées touchées par le conflit.

Within Syria, some 9.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 6.5 million of whom are internally displaced. In addition, over 2.7 million Syrian refugees are registered and living in host countries in the region. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the impact of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of affected people needing assistance. With DFATD's support, this project is providing basic relief items and meeting the health care needs of 40,000 displaced persons and local conflict-affected people in Syria. Project activities include: (1) provide bedding, clothing, and hygiene kits to up to 40,000 conflict-affected people; (2) provide basic health care services to up to 14,412 conflict-affected people; and (3) provide specific relief items for 4,100 children under the age of two. / Juin 2014 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie continue de se détériorer en raison de la guerre civile qui fait rage dans ce pays. En outre, plus de 2,7 millions de réfugiés syriens sont inscrits et vivent dans d'autres pays de la région. Les femmes et les enfants sont particulièrement vulnérables aux répercussions du conflit. De plus, les ressources sont de plus en plus sollicitées dans les pays d'accueil en raison de l'afflux de gens qui ont besoin d'une aide. Avec le soutien du MAECD, ce projet permet de fournir des articles de première nécessité et de répondre aux besoins en soins de santé de 40 000 personnes déplacées et personnes touchées par le conflit à l'échelle locale en Syrie. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) fournir des articles de literie, des vêtements et des trousses d'hygiène à un maximum de 40 000 personnes touchées par le conflit; 2) offrir des services de soins de santé de base à un maximum de 14 412 personnes touchées par le conflit; 3) distribuer des articles particuliers de secours à 4 100 enfants de moins de deux ans.

The United Nations estimates that 12.2 million people inside Syria, including 5.6 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance. Combined with 3.8 million Syrians seeking refuge from the conflict in neighbouring countries, this is the largest number of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With DFATD's support and that of other donors, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is increasing access to health care services, protection, and clinical and social services for conflict-affected people, with a particular focus on pregnant women and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon,. Project activities include: (1) providing support for the delivery of life-saving healthcare, including emergency obstetric care, for up to 2.8 million women in Syria, up to 316,000 women in Jordan and up to 622,000 women in Lebanon; (2) providing support for the rehabilitation of maternal health centres to strengthen the delivery of life-saving healthcare services for women; and (3) enhancing the prevention and response mechanisms for sexual and gender-based violence, including psychosocial support, benefitting more than 2.3 million women and girls. / Décembre 2014 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie continue de se détériorer en raison de la guerre civile et de l'intensification de la violence dans ce pays. The United Nations estimates that 12.2 million people inside Syria, including 5.6 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance, and that 7.6 million of these are internally displaced. Combined with the 3.3 million refugees registered in neighbouring countries, this is the largest number of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With DFATD s support, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is managing the Humanitarian Pooled Fund in Turkey to expand the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance to conflict-affected people living in hard-to-reach areas of Syria, using cross-border routes from Turkey. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency assistance, including protection services, safe drinking water, shelter, core relief items, food and basic healthcare; (2) addressing early recovery needs; and (3) providing critical logistics and coordination services to increase humanitarian partners operational capacity, outreach and access to conflict affected areas. / Décembre 2014 - La situation humanitaire en Syrie continue de se détériorer en raison de la guerre civile et de l intensification de la violence dans ce pays. September 2014 - As ongoing fi...ghting between armed groups and government forces unfold in Ukraine, people have been forced to flee their homes and have become increasingly vulnerable. It is reported that over 275,000 have been displaced from their homes and that an estimated 341,000 have fled to neighbouring countries. As the ongoing fighting is triggering renewed displacement, there is a need to scale up the response to meet the humanitarian needs of the population affected by the violence in Ukraine. With DFATD s support, the International Committee of the Red Cross is helping to reduce the vulnerability of people affected by violence in Ukraine. Project activities include: (1) providing up to 30 hospitals in violence-prone areas with surgical and other medical supplies for the treatment of up to 1,500 weapon-wounded patients; (2) providing training, funding and material support to help the Ukrainian Red Cross Society in restoring family links and providing psychosocial support; and (3) promoting respect for humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law with Ukrainian authorities and other influential actors. / Septembre 2014 - En raison des affrontements qui persistent entre les groupes armés et les forces gouvernementales en Ukraine, les citoyens ont dû quitter leurs maisons et deviennent de plus en plus vulnérables. Plus de 275 000 personnes auraient été forcées de quitter leurs maisons et environ 341 000 se seraient enfuies vers les pays voisins. Comme ces affrontements entraînent des déplacements répétés, il faut étendre la portée de l intervention afin de répondre aux besoins humanitaires de la population touchée par la violence en Ukraine. Avec le soutien du MAECD, le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge contribue à réduire la vulnérabilité des personnes touchées par la violence en Ukraine. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) mettre sur pied, dans des régions où la population est exposée à la violence, jusqu à 30 hôpitaux équipés de matériaux chirurgicaux et d autres fournitures médicales qui leur permettent de traiter jusqu à 1 500 blessés par les armes; 2) offrir un soutien à la formation, un soutien financier et un soutien matériel pour aider la Société de la Croix-Rouge ukrainienne à rétablir des liens familiaux et à offrir un soutien psychosocial; 3) favoriser le respect des principes humanitaires et du droit international humanitaire avec l aide des autorités ukrainiennes et d autres intervenants influents.

With DFATD s support, the World Health Organization is helping to reduce the vulnerability of people affected by violence in Ukraine. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency health kits and logistics support for distribution; (2) strengthening early warning systems for infectious diseases; and (3) working with partners to establish mobile clinics and first aid centres. / Septembre 2014 - En raison des affrontements qui persistent entre les groupes armés et les forces gouvernementales en Ukraine, les citoyens ont dû quitter leurs maisons et deviennent de plus en plus vulnérables. Plus de 275 000 personnes auraient été forcées de quitter leurs maisons et environ 341 000 se seraient enfuies vers les pays voisins. Comme ces affrontements entraînent des déplacements répétés, il faut étendre la portée de l intervention afin de répondre aux besoins humanitaires de la population touchée par la violence en Ukraine. Avec le soutien du MAECD, l Organisation mondiale de la Santé contribue à réduire la vulnérabilité des personnes touchées par la violence en Ukraine. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) fournir des trousses de soins de santé d urgence et assurer un soutien logistique pour leur distribution; 2) renforcer les systèmes d alerte précoce des maladies infectieuses; 3) collaborer avec des partenaires afin de mettre sur pied des cliniques mobiles et des centres de premiers soins.

February 2014 - Yemen has been... experiencing civil unrest and political turmoil since 2011. Conventional weapons and other explosive remnants of war continue to harm people. According to the United Nation s Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan, 14.7 million people in Yemen (58% of the population) need humanitarian assistance in 2014. With DFATD s support, this project is helping to address the health and protection needs of up to 4,785 people who have been internally displaced or seriously affected by ongoing conflict in Aden and Sana a governorates. Project activities include: (1) providing post-surgery, physical and psycho-social rehabilitation services, prosthetic and orthotic services to conventional weapons victims and other persons with disabilities; (2) strengthening the capacity of two health service providers to deliver comprehensive rehabilitation services; and (3) creating a coordinated response system to meet the needs of conventional weapons victims and other persons with disabilities. / Février 2014 - Depuis 2011, le Yémen connaît des troubles civils et des bouleversements politiques. Les armes classiques et d autres restes explosifs de guerre continuent de faire des victimes parmi la population. Selon le Plan d intervention humanitaire au Yémen des Nations Unies, 14,7 millions de personnes (58 % de la population) auront besoin d une aide humanitaire dans ce pays en 2014. Avec le soutien du MAECD, ce projet aide à répondre aux besoins sanitaires et de protection de 4 785 personnes déplacées à l intérieur du pays ou durement touchées par le conflit actuel dans les gouvernorats d Aden et Sana a. Parmi les activités du projet: 1) fournir des services de réadaptation postopératoire, physique et psychosociale, des services de prothèses et d orthèses aux victimes d armes classiques et à d autres personnes handicapées; 2) renforcer la capacité de deux fournisseurs de services de santé pour qu ils puissent fournir des services de réadaptation complets; 3) créer un système d intervention coordonnée pour répondre aux besoins des victimes d armes classiques et d autres personnes handicapées.

This project supports UNICEF s... efforts during humanitarian emergencies, including providing: commodities to treat severe acute malnutrition; safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and hygiene programming; emergency education; basic healthcare; and protection services for children and women. With DFATD s support, UNICEF s 2014 emergency operations in these countries will protect and assist an estimated 29 million people affected by conflict, food insecurity and political instability. / Ce projet appuie les activités de l UNICEF dans les situations d urgence humanitaire, telles que : la fourniture de produits de base pour traiter la malnutrition aiguë sévère; l approvisionnement en eau potable, des installations sanitaires et la mise en oeuvre de programmes d hygiène; la prestation de services d éducation en situation d urgence, de soins de santé de base et de services de protection pour les enfants et les femmes. Avec le soutien du MAECD, les opérations d urgence de l UNICEF en 2014 dans ces pays permettront d aider et de protéger environ 29 millions de personnes touchées par les conflits, l insécurité alimentaire et l instabilité politique.

The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saving lives by getting food to the hungry fast, and it also works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately seven million vulnerable people in Iraq and Yemen in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Activities include: (1) providing assistance such as food, cash and family food parcels; (2) providing nutritional support to treat and prevent acute and chronic malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies; and (3) supporting school feeding programs. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des aliments aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit en 2014 une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque sept millions de personnes vulnérables en Irak et au Yémen. En cas de situation d urgence humanitaire, le PAM s attache principalement à offrir de l assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités : 1) offrir une aide telle que des aliments, de l argent et des colis alimentaires aux familles; 2) apporter un soutien nutritionnel pour traiter et prévenir la malnutrition aiguë et chronique et les carences en micronutriments; 3) appuyer les programmes d alimentation scolaire.

January 2014 - Nearly two-thir...ds of the world s refugees live in protracted refugee situations, which mean that they have been in exile for five years or more without immediate prospects for long-term solutions. Protracted displacement is a significant challenge for the international community. There has been growing international awareness of the prevalence and significance of protracted displacement over the past decade, and there is a broad international consensus that new solutions-oriented approaches need to be developed. As part of these efforts, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has developed a Comprehensive Solutions Strategy for Angolan, Liberian and Rwandan refugees. With DFATD s support, UNHCR will focus on the local integration of some 10,000 Angolans in Zambia. Project activities include: (1) issuing residency permits to Angolan refugees; (2) providing land to former refugees who have obtained residence status; (3) establishing schools, health centres, market places and other infrastructure to facilitate the integration of former refugees in local communities; and (4) providing vocational training and other support to ensure that former refugees have a means to earn a decent living and are self-reliant. / Janvier 2014 - Près des deux tiers des réfugiés du monde vivent en situation de crise prolongée, ce qui signifie qu ils ont vécu un exil de cinq ans ou plus et qu ils n ont aucune perspective de solutions à long terme. Les déplacements prolongés représentent un défi considérable pour la communauté internationale. Depuis la dernière décennie, celle-ci est de plus en plus sensibilisée au caractère généralisé et à l importance de ces déplacements, et il existe un large consensus à l échelle internationale selon lequel de nouvelles approches doivent être conçues afin de trouver des solutions. Dans le cadre de ces efforts, l Office du Haut Commissaire des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés (HCR) a établi une stratégie globale pour les Angolais, les Libériens et les Rwandais. Le soutien du MAECD à l égard de la stratégie globale du HCR est axé sur l intégration locale de quelque 10 000 Angolais en Zambie. Parmi les activités de ce projet : 1) délivrer des permis de séjour aux réfugiés angolais; 2) distribuer des terres aux anciens réfugiés qui ont obtenu leur statut de résidence; 3) établir des écoles, des centres de santé, des marchés et d autres infrastructures pour faciliter l intégration des anciens réfugiés dans les collectivités locales; 4) offrir une formation professionnelle et d autres types de soutien aux anciens réfugiés pour qu ils aient les moyens de gagner leur vie décemment et qu ils soient autonomes.

August 2014 - The humanitarian... situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate as armed clashes continue to drive displacement. The recent surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has displaced an estimated 1.3 million people from their homes. Basic services, including health care and water infrastructure, are disrupted and cause an estimated 1.5 million people to be in need of immediate humanitarian assistance. Iraqi Kurdistan is hosting an additional 230,000 Syrian refugees, which is also placing a great strain on local infrastructure. The situation is expected to deteriorate as fighting and human rights violations persist. This project is helping to reduce the vulnerability of internally displaced people affected by the civil unrest in Iraq. Project activities include: (1) providing food assistance to up to 342,000 people and essential household items, such as hygiene kits, cooking materials, blankets and tents, to up to 240,000 people; (2) rehabilitating essential water and sanitation facilities, such as drinking water stations and latrines, benefiting 1 million people; (3) assisting health facilities through the provision of medical supplies, training for medical professionals and physical rehabilitation services; and (4) promoting respect for humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law with Iraqi authorities and other influential actors. / Aout 2014 - La situation humanitaire en Irak continue de se détériorer, alors que des affrontements armés entrainent le déplacement. La récente flambée de violence entre des groupes armés et des forces gouvernementales a entrainé le déplacement d'environ 1,3 million de personnes de leur foyer. Les services essentiels, dont les soins de santé et les infrastructures d'approvisionnement en eau, sont perturbés, ce qui engendre des besoins humanitaires immédiats pour environ 1,5 million de personnes. La région du Kurdistan Irakien accueille aussi 230 000 réfugiés syriens, ce qui exerce également de fortes pressions sur les infrastructures locales. On s'attend à ce que la situation se détériore au fur et à mesure que les combats et les violations des droits de la personne se poursuivent. Ce projet contribue à réduire la vulnérabilité des personnes déplacées à l'intérieur du pays en raison des troubles civils en Irak.
