UNLOCKING DOORS TO EDUCATION F...OR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES RELATED TO HEARING AND VISION IN BARA DISTRICT NEPAL

Unlocking doors to education f...or children with disabilities related to hearing and vision in Bara district Nepal
more
|
In Nepal children are not scre...ened for visual or hearing impairments. Knowledge of eye- and ear health is generally poor. Traditional beliefs and treatments can be detrimental to sight and vision. Having a disability is still greatly stigmatised. Although the majority of children in Nepal have access to education differently abled children are still mostly excluded from it. This is a major risk for marginalisation. The project which is a 2-year pilot in Bara district in the Terai region in the south of Nepal aims to increase the enrollment of 3 to 8-year-old children with vision or hearing impairment in public preschools. The inhabitants of the district are poor and the number of children not attending school is considerable. The majority of pupils in Bara are boys and the project aims to promote girls' right to education.Grass-root level volunteers are educated to identify children with problems with vision or hearing. The children identified through screening are examined at eye & ear camps to diagnose conditions affecting sight and vision. It is estimated that most of these children have problems that can easily be cured with simple treatments. Children with a severe visual or hearing disability will undergo a 4-6 month rehabilitation to enable life outside home and attending school. Awareness raising campaigns regarding eye- and ear health as well as rights of disabled children will be organised among local inhabitants during the camps. This project is as a collaboration between a Nepalese NGO B.P. Eye Foundation and PSR Finland. The collaboration was initiated from Nepal. Like the previous work of B.P. Eye Foundation this project aims to screen for and promote treatment of disabling conditions as well as contribute to a change in the Nepalese view on the rights of people with disabilities remove barriers and stigmas associated with disabilities and enable children with disabilities to become productive citizens. The Department of Education (DoED) Nepal has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on implementing these pilot protocols in other districts in Nepal.

Tanzania observes rights of di...sabled people in legislation, however these rights are not fully realized at grass roots level, and in particular the situation of rural disabled people is difficult. Reasons are lack of necessary knowhow and resources among municipal decision makers, parents of disabled children, teachers, and other local community influential people. Additionally, schools are often inaccessible and teachers lack skills to work with disabled children. Many disabled children thus are left without possibility of studying. Additionally in traditional culture children are often isolated from all social networks and their development is thus slowed or prevented. The traditional operating model is contrary to human rights and through this project traditional operating models are changed to realize human rights of disabled people. Expected development effects: realization of the human rights of disabled people in Lushoto province. Results of activities (i) community integration of rehabilitated disabled people, (ii) growth in skills of kindergarten and elementary school teachers to work with disbled children, and disabled children are able to attend school, (iii) improved health status of disabled children, and (iv) local leaders and civil servants are aware of Tanzanian disability legislation and implement the rights of disabled people in education. There are 2520 beneficiaries of the project (1045W ja 845M as carers of disabled children, including disabled youth and children 300G ja 330B) and 792 bearers of responsibility. 6860 individual benefit from the project indirectly. The target groups are disabled people, key individuals of organizations, and civil servants. The project is implemented by the northern diocese of the Church of Tanzanie, which is a forerunner in advocating for the rights of disabled people in Tanzania. The know-how of two of the churchs institutions is joined in this project: the know-how of the Rainbow school for developmentally disabled children in detective and community based disability work and the know-how of the Sebastian Kolowa Memorial University in special education and advocacy. Through cooperation, the right to livelihood of disabled people are strengthened through rehabilitation and education, because the project affects, in addition to families and local communitites, also the increase in know-how of realization of rights of disabled people among responsible authorities, teachers, and local community leaders.

CCF/Strengthening of the local... professionals on rehabilitation and inclusion of children with hearing impairment 15 counties in Moldova

|
The object of the project is t...o support to local professionals from Psycho-pedagogical assistance services and schools/kindergartens on rehabilitation and inclusion of children with hearing impairment in 15 counties of the Republic of Moldova. The outputs of the project is to ensure the rehabilitation and equal access to education of 30 children with hearing impairment, build capacity of the local 120 professionals from the inclusive education structures, improve families? knowledge and skills in children?s rehabilitation effective participation and inclusion in society of their children. The project is a follow-up project for the project CCF is implementing 2018 - 2019 with the support of FLC instrument. The project builds on the lessons learned from that project: 1. rehabilitation of children with hearing disabilities is a slow process and it needs to be begin early for good results. Hence CCFs goal is that children with hearing disabilities are directed to the special health services before they reach the school age. 2. Families with child with hearing disabilities often have multiple social problems and often require other kind of support also. CCF is advising families to get the support from local public authorities. 3. Families prefer to act locally. In this project CCF team will travel to rehabilitate the children in their own environment (home school or kindergarten) instead of families travelling to CCF for rehabilitation. 4. In order to reach sustainability it is necessary to focus in training the staff members of psycho-pedagogical institutions and teaching personnel.

CREATING SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS... FOR INCLUSION AND REHABILITATION OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES IN CHILGA WOREDA

Creating Sustainable Solutions... for Inclusion and Rehabilitation of Children with Disabilities in Chilga Woreda
more
|
The disability specific projec...t is designed to create sustainable solutions for inclusion and rehabilitation of children with disabilities in Chilga Woreda. The long-term change we wish to see in the project area is for children with disabilities to have an effective access to health education and preparative employment opportunities and enjoy participation and inclusion in their communities. To achieve the long term impact the project aims in four years (2021-24) to ensure that:1) 640 children with disabilities are rehabilitated and local health office continues providing rehab services as 17th package of their Health Extension Programme. (Article 26 of the CRPD)2) Children with disabilities access an inclusive quality and free primary education secondary education and technical or vocational education on an equal basis with others. (Art. 24/CRPD)3) 30% of Children and youth with disabilities and their families have an adequate standard of living. (Art. 28/CRPD)4) Communities are socially inclusive to children and youth with disabilities and their families and rights-holders and local DPOs are actively monitoring the rights situation. (Art. 29/CRPD) After a decade of restrictive CSO regulation in Ethiopia the situation again allows for rights-based work. To seize the opportunity the project takes a human rights progressive approach to development working in close collaboration with government offices to build their capacity to provide health and education services and employment opportunities for children and youth with disabilities ensuring sustainability of results. The project will take place in sixteen kebeles (smallest administrative unit) covering 48 schools and all communities. Final beneficiaries are about 640 children and youth with disabilities and their families but systems level changes will of course benefit a much larger number of children and persons with disabilities.Interpedia's partner in Ethiopia Berhan Lehetsanat is an expert organisation in CBR and most of the selected approaches to work with government offices and with communities are tested for their effectiveness.

UNLOCKING DOORS TO BASIC HEALT...H AND EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN WITH SENSORY DISABILITIES IN BARA AND PARSA DISTRICTS OF NEPAL
more
|
Unlocking doors to basic healt...h and education for children with Sensory disabilities in Bara and Parsa districts of Nepal
more
|
In Nepal children are not scre...ened for visual or hearing impairments and knowledge of eye- and ear health is generally poor. Having a disability is still greatly stigmatised. Although the majority of children in Nepal have access to education children with disabilties (CwD) are mostly excluded from it which is a major risk for marginalisation. The project is a follow-up of a 2-year pilot in Bara district (2017-18) which will be extended in Bara and Parsa. The aim is to increase the enrollment of 3 to 14-year-old children with vision or hearing impairment in public schools. Districts have high rates of poverty and school attendance is very low. Also the human right's of CwD's are largely violated. The majority of pupils are boys therefore the project promotes girls' right to education. The project will educate female community health volunteers (FCHVs) to identify children with vision or hearing issues. The children identified through screening are examined at Eye & Ear Camps to diagnose the impairments found. It is estimated that the most of these impairments can be easily cured with simple treatments. Children with a severe visual or hearing disability will undergo a 4-6 month rehabilitation to enable life outside home and attending school. Awareness raising campaigns regarding eye- and ear health as well as rights of persons with disabilities (PwD) will be organised among local citizens during the camps. Advocacy on inclusive education and human rights of CwD will be promoted. Eye & ear care and rehabilitation centers will be established in Bara. The local project partner is B. P. Eye Foundation (BPEF) that has 3 decades of experience in rehabilitation of CwDs and training of ophtalmologists and optometrists. For improved access to treatment and rehabilitation and to increase awareness on human rights gender equality and inclusive education the project will strengthen the collaboration with other NGO's: IMPACT Nepal Nepal Association for the Welfare of the Blind Nepal Apanga Sewa sangh Bara and Loo Niva. A referral system will be developed with Patan CBR to reach a larger scale of PwD's. In Finland we will collaborate with Interpedia ry.

F.a: Inclusion of children wit...h disabilities through Community Based Rehabilitation
more
|
This project focuses on the ri...ghts of children with disabilities as a minority group. Taking cognisance of the current context of children with disabilities in two rural municipalities of KwaZulu Natal, and using the framework of Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR), this project provides a mechanism by which to support children with disabilities and the families with whom they live. Further, it seeks to sensitise and mobilise local community structures and targeted service providers towards providing appropriate and accessible services for all children. Key to the approach is supporting the agency of parents towards promoting the rights of their children.
