This initiative aims to assist... the most affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa to improve access to diagnosis and treatment for the major causes of death in children under five years of age: malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea. The project builds on the World Health Organization's (WHO) experience in strengthening community case management of malaria (CCM), and focuses on integrated community case management (iCCM) of pneumonia and diarrhea. This approach helps to ensure that children have access to treatment for all three diseases. The program also aims to generate evidence to inform WHO policy recommendations and guidance on CCM and iCCM. Activities include: training of community health workers; developing supervision and training structures; procuring and distributing supplies and commodities; developing norms, standards and guidance to diagnose and treat leading diseases affecting children under five; as well as disseminating and incorporating CCM and iCCM guidelines and policies into national health care policies. The project is being implemented in five countries in sub-Saharan Africa: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Malawi, Niger and Nigeria. EXAMINING THE LINK BETWEEN TEL...EVISION AND UNHEALTHY EATING AMONG CHILDREN IN PERU

Examining the Link Between Tel...evision and Unhealthy Eating Among Children in Peru
more
|
Peru is experiencing a rapid r...ise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Cardiovascular disease and cancers are among the five leading causes of premature death and disease in Peru. Researchers will examine whether television exposure increases unhealthy eating among Peruvian children. There is increasing evidence that television exposure is related to unhealthy eating and rising rates of obesity in children, but most studies on these relationships have been conducted in high income countries. The Peruvian government has established policy principles to address nutrition and obesity, with the aim of decreasing the number of NCDs and promoting health. The research team will run a three-year longitudinal investigation involving five studies. They will include a content analysis of TV advertising that promotes unhealthy foods, and a survey measuring children's exposure to this TV content and their eating behaviours. The investigators will share the research findings with stakeholders using tailored strategies. For example, they will provide specific recommendations to school principals who may relay the information to parents. They will also offer recommendations to the ministries of Education and Health to inform efforts to regulate food marketing strategies that target Peruvian children.

This project aims to improve t...he lives of more than 230,000 children and youth in disadvantaged communities in West and Francophone Africa using Sport and Play for Development and Peace (SPDP) programming. SPDP programming intentionally uses sport, physical activity and play to improve education, health, gender equality and child protection for vulnerable children and youth. Some project activities include: (1) implementing twice-weekly sport and play activities for children and youth, especially girls; (2) providing training for teachers, coaches, caregivers, and children and youth on the right to play, health, education, gender equality, inclusion and child protection; (3) providing core training and follow-up support to coaches, teachers, and partners to help them integrate sport and play methodologies into their coaching and daily teaching; (4) building and rehabilitating safe play spaces, classrooms and sanitation facilities, ensuring appropriate spaces for girls and women; and (5) conducting knowledge sharing and learning forums and meetings to share best practices in use of SPDP. To ensure sustainability, the project also seeks to improve the ability and commitment of teachers, coaches, communities, national governments and key stakeholders to continue delivering sport- and play-based programs to children and youth at risk and to integrate SPDP methodologies into national development goals. It is estimated that nearly 9 ...million children die annually from conditions that could be readily treated if North American or European standards of care were more generally available. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been working with the University of British Colombia (UBC) on interventions to secure better outcomes after drug treatment for infants and young children in rural Africa. This project will complement work in Tanzania and Ghana funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Uganda is an interesting partner because, with a median age of 14.8 years, it has one of the youngest populations in the world and is well advanced in case management for childhood malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea.Canadian researchers will work closely with Ugandan partners to test the usefulness of new cellphone technologies in integrated community case management of acute respiratory infections, pneumonia, malaria and diarrhea in children under five years in rural western Uganda. In the second year of the project, the team will explore the application of wireless phone oximetry as an aid to the diagnosis and treatment of childhood pneumonia at a level 4 health centre (county level). Oximetry is a non-invasive method of monitoring the amount of oxygen in the patient s blood. The project is expected to answer the following questions. Will the application of cellphone technology improve the ability of village health volunteers to treat acute infections in infants and young children appropriately? Will the application of cellphone technology improve the ability of village health volunteers to identify life-threatening infections in infants and young children, and refer such cases to the appropriate facility in a timely manner? Will the wider availability of cellphone technology improve the supply-chain management of medications for the target conditions? While examining the use of cellphone communication, the researchers will also evaluate the drug prescribing paradigm and the impact of improved prescribing choices on child survival.

ASSESSMENT OF PHYSICAL ACTIVIT...Y AND ACTIVE TRANSPORT AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN IN KENYA, NIGERIA, AND MOZAMBIQUE
more
|
Assessment of Physical Activit...y and Active Transport Among School Children in Kenya, Nigeria, and Mozambique
more
|
Non-communicable diseases (NCD...s) are a major global public health crisis. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are especially hard-hit. With few resources and weak health systems, these countries struggle under the double burden of infectious diseases and NCDs. The main NCDs, like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, can be prevented by addressing the four common risk factors: physical inactivity, tobacco use, alcohol misuse, and unhealthy diets. This project will help inform policy options for increasing physical activity among children and youth in sub-Saharan Africa as a key strategy to reduce the NCD burden. Evidence suggests that a physical activity transition is currently occurring in LMICs. Increasing urbanization has reduced physical activity and active transportation (walking or cycling to work, school, etc.) levels. This may in turn increase the risk of becoming overweight or obese, and of developing NCDs. This study will assess physical activity and active transportation levels among 3,000 school children in Kenya, Nigeria, and Mozambique (1,000 from each participating country). The research team will collect existing active transportation policies for school children in each jurisdiction. They will compile a policy catalogue and collect data. The research will inform physical activity report cards in each country, based on Active Healthy Kids Canada's model. The study also aims to develop a surveillance model that can be used in other LMICs to assess physical activity and active transportation among children and youth. The researchers will prepare a report with policy-relevant recommendations for each country and targeted to policy-makers. The project's specific objectives include: - To develop or refine an instrument or protocol to collect physical activity and active transport data; - To collect physical activity and active transport data from African school children living in urban, suburban, and rural areas; -To create report cards for Kenya, Nigeria, and Mozambique, which will be presented during the Global Summit on Physical Activity of Children in 2014; - To modify the Neighbourhood Environment Walkability Scale instrument (NEWS) for use in African countries, assess its reliability, and examine the association between these characteristics and active transportation in African school children; - To compare provincial/county, municipal, and school policies related to active transportation; - To develop a physical activity and active transport surveillance model for other LMIC countries to use; and, - To provide recommendations for policy, programs, and future research.

This project aims to enhance e...ducational opportunities for girls by supporting the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene In Schools for Girls (WinS for Girls) program. WinS for Girls is a multi-country program and partnership led by UNICEF and the UN Girls Education Initiative (UNGEI) that seeks to increase the number of girls completing primary school and entering secondary schools. Menstrual health management is a key factor in ensuring girls stay in school. Working in over 100 schools per participating country, with activities at local, national, and international levels, WinS for Girls is addressing the menstrual hygiene management needs and cultural norms that are barriers for adolescent girls to attending and performing well at school. Activities are expected to benefit 480,000 children. Some project activities include: (i) conducting qualitative field research on menstrual hygiene management knowledge and practices among school girls; (ii) developing a basic menstrual hygiene management package for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in schools based on country-specific research and current practices; and (iii) establishment of menstrual hygiene management working groups led by the Ministry of Education in each country.

IMPROVING CHILD NUTRITION IN G...HANA, KENYA, AND ZAMBIA TO PREVENT NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Improving Child Nutrition in G...hana, Kenya, and Zambia to Prevent Non-Communicable Diseases
more
|
Researchers have identified ch...anges in nutrition in Africa as one of the main causes of the rising epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This research project will assess the food consumption patterns and nutrition status of children to set the stage for an intervention research project to address the problem. The nutrition transition in many African countries is characterized by the increased consumption of foods that are low in nutrients but high in fat, sugar, and salt. More evidence is needed to define the characteristics and determinants of this transition among different population groups. There is a paucity of research examining key nutrition and NCD factors: -food consumption patterns in school-aged children; -how these patterns may lead to NCDs later in life; and, -what interventions are needed to influence diet behaviour in that population. This project's main aim is to assess children's food consumption patterns and nutrition status between the ages of 6 and 14 years of age. The study will take place in selected urban areas in Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia. It will provide key information for a future intervention research project. Researchers will study children at nine schools in each country, representing high, middle, and low-income groups. They will use the following data collection techniques: -questionnaires with 2,176 respondents; -urine analysis to assess sodium, calcium, and potassium levels; -in-depth interviews with school administrators; and, -food diaries, which a sample of the children will complete. The research team will also study the children's meal sources; in other words, whether food is provided in school, carried from home, or purchased at or outside the school. This project offers a unique opportunity to provide evidence to inform program and policy design that will help prevent and control NCDs in Africa. The research team will share results through in-country workshops, websites, and peer review journals. They will implement the project in partnership with the Ministries of Health, Education, and Local Governments in Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia.

This project aims to strengthe...n action toward ending child, early and forced marriage by increasing investments in evidence-based, girl-centered approaches to ending the harmful practice and upholding the rights of adolescent girls. The project supports governments and civil society to reach the most marginalized adolescent girls and eliminate child marriage. UNFPA is supporting governments by making targeted investments at scale to reach thousands of girls at risk of and affected by child marriage, through proven interventions (primarily community-level girl groups) that provide opportunities for social participation and leadership, developing life skills and literacy and accessing health services. The project simultaneously strives to create a more favourable environment for adolescent girls at the community and national levels. Project activities include: (1) establishing safe girl-only spaces, in which girls can receive peer support and access female solidarity networks; (2) developing and implementing curriculum for adolescent empowerment; (3) providing life skills education to adolescent girls and building their capacities in e-literacy, financial literacy and vocational skills; (4) providing technical assistance to improve access to quality health programs for adolescent girls; (5) supporting key national, regional and local authorities to build evidence around child marriage and adolescent pregnancy; and (6) engaging with officials to support national strategy for the abolition of child, early and forced marriage and the reduction of teenage pregnancy.

The initiative aims to address... several development needs and challenges all linked to underlying poverty and lack of basic services in the remote rural areas in the Ramechap district in Nepal, in the Azabache and Nacaome areas in Honduras and in the Gourma province in Burkina Faso. The overall objective of the initiative is to improve the health of mothers and young children, and thus contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality, through assistance with village and household-scale infrastructure, parent health education and enhanced nutrition and food security. World Neighbours Canada aims to develop and implement training programs for women and men to learn about family planning options, to increase food crop production using sustainable and ecologically sound practices, to promote proper nutrition in infants and young children under 2 years of age that includes breast feeding promotion, developing and implementing water system plans with participation of users etc. The project proposes to benefit more than 50,000 women, men, girls and boys. World Neigbours Canada is working with Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti (TSS) in Nepal, L'Association d'Appui à la Promotion du Développement Durable des Communautés (APDC) in Burkina Faso, and Vecinos Honduras, in Honduras to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's commitment to maternal, newborn and child health programming.

Through support to The Hospita...l for SickKids (SickKids), this proposed initiative seeks to help the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Trust (NMCHT) put in place operations and management systems for the new 200-bed Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital (NMCH) located in Johannesburg. Global Affairs Canada funding to this project would support SickKids Hospital to provide technical support to the NMCH in the following areas: 1) recruitment and training of key operational and clinical staff; 2) establishment of effective governance and management structures, fair procurement of capital and operational equipment; and 3) establishment of world-class clinical research and teaching platforms. Under this project, SickKids will partner the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital by offering its expertise across a broad spectrum of advisory services that will help build MNCH's capacity and help it realise its vision of improved child-centred specialised paediatric healthcare services for children in South Africa and the southern Africa region irrespective of their social and economic status.

Reducing Child Mortality: The ...Role of Mobile Electronic Health Information System

This project seeks to improve ...the quality and timeliness of evidence-based decision-making to improve child health outcomes in rural Ghana. This will be achieved by establishing a sustainable health information system that collects data on under-five children from their caregivers and health facilities and strengthening the capacity of various stakeholders to adequately use that data. In Ghana, as in many low and middle income countries, the majority of the under five deaths are preventable and caused by infectious diseases. A well-functioning health system with robust health information system could deliver real-time data to assist in managing these illnesses. In an attempt to address such information gaps, the Ghana Health Service introduced the District Health Information and Management System software in 2012. However, this system is not operational in rural parts of Ghana. Health facilities in these hard to reach communities still rely on paper-based reporting system which is often erroneous, incomplete and not readily available for prompt decision-making.This project will utilize the multi-purpose function of a mobile phone-based health information system to empower caregivers to identify health problems of their children under five years of age. The system will link them up with a centralized system with an in-built algorithm to collect data on the children's symptoms and allow the caregivers to interact with health workers for further advice and follow-up. At the same time, this system will link with the Ghana Health service system to provide real-time data for decision making at both central and peripheral level. In addition to publications, this project will result in improved quality of data, access to and use of reliable health information from local to central levels, with an enhanced capacity of caregivers to identify childhood infectious diseases and to seek early intervention for better child health outcomes. This project represents one of nine selected as a cohort of implementation research projects spanning two regions (West Africa and the Middle East) and two thematic topics (adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems). The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new feminist international assistance policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 World Health Organization (WHO) led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

REDUCING CHILD MORTALITY: THE ...ROLE OF MOBILE ELECTRONIC HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEM

Reducing child mortality: The ...role of mobile electronic health information system

In Ghana, as in many low and m...iddle-income countries, the majority of under-five deaths are caused by preventable infectious diseases. A well-functioning health system with robust health information could deliver real-time data to assist in managing these illnesses. Accordingly, in 2012, the Ghana Health Service introduced the District Health Information and Management System software. However, this system is not operational in rural parts of Ghana. Health facilities in these hard-to-reach communities still rely on a paper-based reporting system that is often inaccurate, incomplete, and not readily available for prompt decision-making.This project seeks to improve the quality and timeliness of evidence-based decision-making to improve child health outcomes in rural Ghana. This will be achieved by establishing a sustainable health information system that collects data on under-five children from their caregivers and health facilities and by strengthening the capacity of various stakeholders to adequately use that data. It will be implemented in collaboration with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. The project will use the multi-purpose function of a mobile phone-based health information system to empower caregivers to identify health problems of their under-five children. The system will link them to a centralized system with a built-in algorithm to collect data on children's symptoms and allow the caregivers to interact with health workers for further advice and follow-up. At the same time, this system will link to the Ghana Health service system to provide real-time data for decision-making at both central and local levels. In addition to publications, this project will result in improved quality of data and better access to and use of reliable health information from local to central levels. It will also result in enhanced caregiver capacity to identify childhood infectious diseases. This project represents one of nine projects spanning two regions (West Africa and the Middle East) and two thematic topics (adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems).

This project aims to reduce de...ath and illness among newborns and children in underserved districts in Ghana. By expanding paediatric nurse programs, this project seeks to build the professional skills of paediatric nurses and health workers to provide quality, cost-effective, evidence-based nursing and midwifery care to newborns and children. Project activities include: (1) establishing three new training institutions for paediatric nursing specialist programs and continuing professional development courses; (2) developing standardized curricula for the paediatric nursing specialist program and the continuing professional development course at the national Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives; (3) delivering paediatric nursing specialist training programs to 500 nurses; (4) delivering continuing professional development courses on subjects such as sickle cell disease, neonatal care and nutrition to 1,000 nurses, midwives, and community health workers; and, (5) facilitating the adoption of essential policies including equitable national recruitment, retention and deployment strategies for scale-up with a focus on underserved regions. The project expects to reach about 1,500 people, including nurses, midwives and health workers, directly with training. Approximately 6,700,000 children and newborns are also expected to benefit from better health services as a result of the scale-up of paediatric nursing programs in Ghana. DFATD has set aside funds for an evaluation of this project. For administrative reasons, the funds identified for this purpose have been included in the amount appearing on this page.
