Integrated Community Agricultu...re and Nutrition (ICAN) - Community Connector Follow-on
more
|
USAID's Integrated Community A...griculture and Nutrition Activity (ICAN) is USAID/Uganda's flagship resilience project, awarded in July 2018. The Activity goal is to enhance the resilience of vulnerable households in the eight districts. Over five years, ICAN will work with community groups to maximize economic opportunities for vulnerable households, stabilize their access to and consumption of diverse and nutritious diets, and increase social capital by reinforcing relationships among formal governance systems and communities. Through collaboration with the private sector, and promoting a community land management approach, ICAN is laying the foundation for self-reliance in Uganda. Throughout implementation, ICAN will pay particular attention to gender, social inclusion, and youth/adolescents, and will incorporate a strong social and behavior change (SBC) component. ICAN will increase economic opportunities for 116,000 poor households by improving agriculture and non-agriculture-based livelihoods, and by strengthening their connections to markets and financial services. ICAN will layer interventions and partner with RHITES SW, RHITES E and other health activities to addressing health and nutrition challenges. In building household resilience, through community platforms and models, ICAN will mobilize women and adolescents and deliver community services in order to contribute to improved maternal child health, Family planning, WASH and nutrition outcomes.

Domestic Resource Mobilization... for Development Activity (DRM4D)
more
|
The goal of the DRM4D activity... is to increase domestic revenue mobilization (both tax and non-tax) and thereby create the fiscal space for public spending and investments in service delivery and other priority areas. The activity will support interventions that enhance predictability and fairness in the tax system, reduce the costs and burdens of tax compliance, and create platforms and opportunities for public-private dialogue on both the mobilization and use of public resources. At the sub-national level, the activity will support interventions aimed at expanding tax and non-tax revenue options for selected local governments. The project will also engage with the Government of Uganda (GOU) on opportunities for investing the increased revenue into poverty reducing sectors such as health, education and agriculture.

USAID/Uganda Maternal Child He...alth and Nutrition (MCHN) Activity
more
|
The activity supports two resu...lts:..1. MCHN service delivery improved: This result will support Government of Uganda (GoU) efforts to cascade, from the national level to the subnational level, the policies, guidelines, standards and implementation strategies (henceforth referred to collectively as strategies) that promote improved MCHN service delivery. Specifically, the activity will: a. Strengthen national governments capacity to develop and roll out high quality strategies to improve MCHN service delivery; b. Support other USAID/Uganda efforts to help subnational governments adopt and scale-up national-level strategies to improve MCHN service delivery in Ugandas Eastern, East Central, Southwestern, and two Northern regions (Acholi and Lango). c. Strengthen national-subnational linkages, and subnational capacity, to deliver improved MCHN services in Kampala, creating a national model for urban service delivery...2. Capacity for MCHN good governance increased: This result will be achieved by further strengthening GoU capacity for the multi-sectoral cooperation, evidence-based decision-making, and good governance leadership required to achieve and sustain improvements in MCHN outcomes envisaged in Result 1 above.

This activity will work with t...he Zambian government (GRZ) to develop and implement national strategies and plans that address challenges faced by the health sector, including the shortage of human resources, limited management and leadership skills among staff, inadequate coordination and integration of health programs, and weak public financial management systems. ~The activity will provide technical assistance to the GRZ to build the capacity of health managers and providers at all levels of the health system to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs. ~The activity will also strengthen the capacity of community structures, such as Neighborhood Health Committees, to enhance community-level participation in the health sector. ~Additionally, this activity will support the implementation of community-level nutrition interventions to address chronic malnutrition in targeted districts, and safe motherhood interventions that support the Saving Mothers, Giving Life endeavor.

BREAKTHROUGH-ACTION
|
Breakthrough-ACTION
|
Breakthrough-ACTION will use s...tate-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to encourage people in developing countries to adopt healthy behaviors, from using modern contraceptive methods to sleeping under bed nets to being tested for HIV. Much of the work will harness the power of communication - from mass media campaigns to TV and radio dramas to simple posters in a health clinic - to inspire long-lasting change. The project will also take advantage of other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve programs. The program - which builds on a prior five-year, 31-country project called the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) - is expected to be double the size. It will be led by CCP who will partner with Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace Kenya and Camber Collective. Breakthrough-ACTION will also be supported in the field by ActionSprout, the International Center for Research on Women and Human Network International. CCP is based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Scaling Up Early Childhood Dev...elopment in Zambia (SUpErCDZ)
more
|
The Scaling Up Early Childhood... Development in Zambia (SUpErCDZ) activity provides early childhood development (ECD) innovations to improve physical and cognitive health outcomes for children, between ages 0-6. Operating across four districts in Southern and Eastern Provinces, SUpErCDZ works with local resources, including Safe Motherhood Action Groups, also know as SMAGs, and maternity waiting homes to establish community-based parenting groups that can respond to the needs of young children. These groups address topics including cognitive stimulation, child nutrition, and positive parenting. The SUpErCDZ project also provides training and mentorship to healthcare workers, community health volunteers, early childhood development workers, and caregivers to improve ECD-related knowledge and behaviors in their communities.

SCALING UP NUTRITION PROGRAM
|
Scaling Up Nutrition Program
|
The Scaling Up Nutrition Progr...am is a cross-ministry and multi-donor program to reduce stunting in Zambia through implementation of the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) 1,000 Most Critical Days Program. The first phase, referred to as SUN 1.0. was funded by several donor organizations and significant lessons were learned regarding coordination and implementation. Annex 1 SUN 2.0 Design Report, September 2016 provides a comprehensive background on the lessons learned of SUN 1.0 and the overall direction of the SUN 2.0 program.

AMALIMA
|
Amalima
|
FFP partners with a USAID Impl...ementing Partner to implement a multi-year Development Food Security Activity, which works within communities to expand household access to food, increase resilience to shocks, and improve nutrition and health among mothers and children younger than five years of age. The Implementing Partner is targeting more than 283,000 beneficiaries.
more
|
Program Approach:
Improve ...Sustainable Access to and Availability of Food: Amalima promotes climate and conservation-sensitive agriculture practices and encourages the adoption of improved agriculture and livestock production practices;
Strengthen Community Resilience to Shocks: Amalima partners with communities to improve livelihoods and build resilience by creating and strengthening disaster risk reduction (DRR) committees through cash for asset activities, household asset vouchers, and village savings and lending (VS&L) groups that promote income generating activities and savings to build household resiliency;
Improve Nutrition and Health: Amalima improves the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices, dietary diversity, and micro-nutrient intake of pregnant and lactating women and children under two by distributing supplementary feeding rations and enhancing nutrition care practices with a combination of capacity building, mentoring, and community-based messaging delivered through care groups and community health clubs;
Promote Gender Equality: Amalima empowers women to play a key role in food security and resiliency at the household and community levels through increased access to and control over incomes, while promoting men and women to take increasingly equal responsibilities for both productive and reproductive activities. MEASURE EVALUATION IV
|
Measure Evaluation IV
|
The Monitoring and Evaluation ...to Assess and Use Results (MEASURE) Evaluation Phase IV Project builds on the decades-long commitment by the Bureau for Global Health to support health sector monitoring and evaluation and country health information system strengthening. The project is designed, in part, to further efforts of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to end preventable child and maternal deaths (EPCMD) by assisting partner governments and institutions to generate and make use of high-quality health systems data that can be used to guide decision-making on effective interventions. The strategic objective of the MEASURE Evaluation Phase IV Project is to enable countries to strengthen national, community, and facility-based systems to generate high quality health information that is used to inform decisions on policies, programs, and resource allocations at all levels of the health system.

STRENGTHENING MULTI-SECTORAL N...UTRITION PROGRAMMING THROUGH IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE
more
|
Strengthening Multi-Sectoral N...utrition Programming through Implementation Science
more
|
The Strengthening Multi-Sector...al Nutrition Programming through Implementation Science activity supports implementation research to refine and better target interventions and policies for nutrition services within the Feed the Future zone of influence. The activity uses a mixed-methods research approach to identify the most cost-effective and high-impact package of multi-sectoral nutrition interventions that can be nationally scaled-up. Working through a coordinated approach with the Government of Bangladesh, NGOs, and the private sector, this activity's research is testing models to determine which are most effective in significantly reducing stunting. The research considers health services, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, available social safety nets, water, sanitation, hygiene, and gender. In addition, the activity works with Government stakeholders on interpreting and using research findings to inform future multi-sectoral nutrition policy making and planning. This activity contributes to Bangladesh's national health policy and investment decisions. It is aligned with agency-wide objectives under Global Health such as Preventing Child and Maternal Deaths, as well as the Global Food Security Strategy's objective of a well-nourished population, especially women and children. Undernutrition is estimated to be an underlying cause of 45 percent of child mortality and anemia contributes to 20 percent of maternal mortality. The activity is designed to use multi-sectoral programming approach to improve nutritional status in Bangladesh. This activity supports the U.S. National Security Strategy, the State-USAID Joint Strategic Plan Goal Two, and the U.S. Government's mission objective of improved health status in Bangladesh.

Data for Impact (D4I)
|
The USAID-funded Data for Impa...ct (D4I) project is a mechanism for monitoring, evaluation, data analysis and use, and other research needs. D4I is an associate award of the MEASURE Evaluation Phase IV project and is a cross-bureau global health mechanism that supports Missions across health sectors. D4I builds on and reinforces current U.S. government efforts to support countries to generate and use high quality data as evidence to improve programs, policies, and outcomes (https://www.data4impactproject.org). D4I will continue the work of MEASURE Evaluation Phase IV around evaluation, data quality and data use (the specific services are listed below) through the adaptation and use of tools and methodologies developed by MEASURE Evaluation Phase IV and through development of new ones as needed.

Medicines, Technologies, and P...harmaceutical Services (MTaPS)
more
|
The goal of MTaPS is to enable... low- and middle-income countries to strengthen their pharmaceutical systems to ensure sustainable access to and appropriate use of safe, effective, quality-assured, and affordable essential medical products and medicines-related pharmaceutical services. The purpose of MTaPS is to provide pharmaceutical system strengthening assistance for sustained improvements in health system performance, and to advance USAID s goals of Preventing Child and Maternal Deaths, Controlling the HIV/AIDS Epidemic, and Combatting Infectious Disease Threats, as well as expanding essential health coverage. MTaPS works to strengthen essential areas of the pharmaceutical sector, including regulatory capacity, supply chain management, pharmaceutical financing and services, and pharmaceutical management information systems. Within this context, MTaPS addresses USG priority health elements including malaria, HIV/AIDS, family planning and reproductive health, tuberculosis, maternal and child health, neglected tropical diseases, and the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA). MTaPS focuses on enhancing pharmaceutical services through patient-centered solutions while continuing to support essential supply chain functions and medical products supply security. The MTaPS result areas address the five health systems components (governance, human resources, information, financing, and service delivery) as they pertain to pharmaceutical management, informing the design of potential interventions to ensure that they respond to health element and cross-cutting concerns in support of health system strengthening.
