Caritas-Rwanda will continue t...o improve the nutritional status of mothers and children (especially those under 2 years of age) through community-based interventions in nine districts. The project will seek to improve the well-being of HIV/AIDS-affected orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and improve the nutritional status of adults living with HIV through cooking demonstrations, nutrition assessments (anthropometric measurements) and nutrition counseling. Of the 73,482 people supported under this program, 14,416 are OVCs, 36,000 are children under five years, and 7,200 are pregnant and lactating women. The project uses cost effective community-based solutions like internal savings and loan groups, farmers field schools and the positive deviance hearth model to address nutritional and financial needs of beneficiaries, with emphasis on resilience and empowerment through economic strengthening, food security, nutrition and hygiene, and increased access to health services.

This contract provides technic...al assistance to entities that receive direct financing under USAID's government-to-government (G2G) program in the health sector. Assistance is in technical areas in the health sector (e.g. how to improve lagging health indicators) and capacity building in governance and management (e.g. ensuring government entities understand G2G requirements and effectively oversee implementation); it will enable target regions to sustain their health outcomes, reinforce the Ministry of Health's (MOH) stewardship role, and increase domestic spending on health. GoTAP also provides assistance to USAID to better align G2G investments with MOH processes, and provides analytical support to USAID and the MOH to improve use of data for decision-making and identify opportunities for adjustments in USAID health programming.

The Resilience and Economic Gr...owth in the Sahel - Enhanced Resilience (REGIS-ER) aims to increase the resilience of chronically vulnerable people, households, communities and systems in targeted agro-pastoral and marginal agriculture livelihood zones in Niger and Burkina Faso. Expected, topline results in targeted geographies are: Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rates reduced from near 15% to < 10% prevalence; the depth of poverty amongst poor households reduced by 20%; the prevalence of severely/moderately hungry households reduced by 20%; and the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance during a drought of 2011 magnitude reduced by 375,000.

The purpose of Task Order 1: P...romoting Health, Adjusting the Reproductive Environment (PHARE) is to design, implement, and evaluate innovative social and behavior change strategies for improving reproductive health in francophone West Africa. Focus countries will include the nine Ouagadougou Partnership countries and the Democratic Republic of Congo. BREAKTHROUGH - RESEARCH
BREAKTHROUGH - Research
Breakthrough-RESEARCH will con...vene and engage a broad range of health and development stakeholders, supporting them in developing, promoting, and operationalizing visionary, consensus-driven agendas for Social and Behavior Change (SBC) research that contribute to measurable global health impact by providing the evidence needed to increase the practice of priority health behaviors and enable social norms for improved health and development outcomes. This may include, for example, synthesizing evidence and building consensus around SBC research agendas, designing and implementing high-priority SBC studies, and developing research utilization strategies and products tailored to end-users. Breakthrough-RESEARCH may also conduct performance and impact evaluations of SBC activities implemented through Mission bilateral or other central projects.

BREAKTHROUGH-ACTION
Breakthrough-ACTION
Breakthrough-ACTION will use s...tate-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to encourage people in developing countries to adopt healthy behaviors, from using modern contraceptive methods to sleeping under bed nets to being tested for HIV. Much of the work will harness the power of communication - from mass media campaigns to TV and radio dramas to simple posters in a health clinic - to inspire long-lasting change. The project will also take advantage of other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve programs. The program - which builds on a prior five-year, 31-country project called the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) - is expected to be double the size. It will be led by CCP who will partner with Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace Kenya and Camber Collective. Breakthrough-ACTION will also be supported in the field by ActionSprout, the International Center for Research on Women and Human Network International. CCP is based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

more
Feed the Future Tajikistan Agr...iculture and Water Project
more
This new activity will improve... nutrition through agriculture interventions within the USG Feed the Future (FTF) focus area, 12 districts in western Khatlon Province, by increasing the availability and affordability of nutritious crops and dairy products to reduce stunting and wasting of children. The activity will develop sustainable agriculture value chains with a focus on small holder farmers. The activity will emphasize scaling technologies and support in order to extend the season for vegetable production, increase orchard production, and improving homestead dairy production. The activity will also improve marketing opportunities for farmers. This will be accomplished in part by implementing and scaling up the agriculture advisory services and technologies for vegetable production developed by a current USAID funded activities. The activity will include a water component to continue legal and technical support for Water Users Associations. Water is a foundation activity to any agricultural production program in Tajikistan due to the dominance of irrigated agricultural lands. This water activity will include local, river basin, and national activities. This activity will also include a mass media component to promote public outreach of nutrition sensitive agriculture activities throughout the Feed the Future program in Tajikistan. This activity is specific to USAID Central Asia Mission in Tajikistan and supports implementation of the Feed the Future initiative in Tajikistan. Activities will be consistent with and reinforce the priorities of the Government of Tajikistan and reflect coordination with other donors and other projects, including the World Bank implementation of the multilateral Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) grant in Tajikistan.

The project supports WFP, unde...r the Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programme (TSFP), to assist malnourished children over a period of 12 months in 140 Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in Khatlon region through provision of specialized nutritious food. The targeted districts were selected jointly with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population, taking into consideration the high malnutrition rate and the capacity of the public health centers both in terms of human resources and infrastructure. This is done in order to ensure proper implementation and the possibility of replicating sustainable models in other regions. While WFP provides the treatment to moderate acute malnourished children, UNICEF will support the cases of severe acute malnutrition at the PHCs and District Therapeutic Feeding centers.

USAID/UGANDA ADVOCACY FOR BETT...ER BETTER HEALTH
more
USAID/Uganda Advocacy for Bett...er Better Health
more
This mechanism will implement ...advocacy activities targeting a range of HIV, health and education issues in 35 districts, funded from the FHP and PEPFAR accounts. The program will work with civil society organizations (CSOs), through existing community, district and national level structures, and with other USAID programs and will result in strengthening the citizens' voice, increasing demand for services and the promotion of country ownership. The key objectives are: 1) to ensure that communities in the selected districts can identify and articulate their needs and are able to demand quality services; 2) to ensure that the CSOs develop effective advocacy initiatives and are able to represent the communities' demands for better quality services; and 3) to build the technical and operational capacity of the CSOs to qualify them as potential direct recipients of future USAID funding.
