USAID/UGANDA ADVOCACY FOR BETT...ER BETTER HEALTH
more
|
USAID/Uganda Advocacy for Bett...er Better Health
more
|
This mechanism will implement ...advocacy activities targeting a range of HIV, health and education issues in 35 districts, funded from the FHP and PEPFAR accounts. The program will work with civil society organizations (CSOs), through existing community, district and national level structures, and with other USAID programs and will result in strengthening the citizens' voice, increasing demand for services and the promotion of country ownership. The key objectives are: 1) to ensure that communities in the selected districts can identify and articulate their needs and are able to demand quality services; 2) to ensure that the CSOs develop effective advocacy initiatives and are able to represent the communities' demands for better quality services; and 3) to build the technical and operational capacity of the CSOs to qualify them as potential direct recipients of future USAID funding.

Integrated Community Agricultu...re and Nutrition (ICAN) - Community Connector Follow-on
more
|
USAID's Integrated Community A...griculture and Nutrition Activity (ICAN) is USAID/Uganda's flagship resilience project, awarded in July 2018. The Activity goal is to enhance the resilience of vulnerable households in the eight districts. Over five years, ICAN will work with community groups to maximize economic opportunities for vulnerable households, stabilize their access to and consumption of diverse and nutritious diets, and increase social capital by reinforcing relationships among formal governance systems and communities. Through collaboration with the private sector, and promoting a community land management approach, ICAN is laying the foundation for self-reliance in Uganda. Throughout implementation, ICAN will pay particular attention to gender, social inclusion, and youth/adolescents, and will incorporate a strong social and behavior change (SBC) component. ICAN will increase economic opportunities for 116,000 poor households by improving agriculture and non-agriculture-based livelihoods, and by strengthening their connections to markets and financial services. ICAN will layer interventions and partner with RHITES SW, RHITES E and other health activities to addressing health and nutrition challenges. In building household resilience, through community platforms and models, ICAN will mobilize women and adolescents and deliver community services in order to contribute to improved maternal child health, Family planning, WASH and nutrition outcomes.

Maternal and Child Survival Pr...ogram (MCSP - formerly RMNCH)
more
|
The United States Agency for I...nternational Developments (USAID) Bureau for Global Healths flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) focuses on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The Program is introducing and supporting high-impact, sustainable reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) interventions in partnership with ministries of health and other partners. MCSP places a greater emphasis on key cross-cutting issues such as innovation, e/mHealth, equity, quality, gender, public-private partnerships and involvement of civil society, community approaches, health systems strengthening, and behavior change interventions. While maintaining a focus on technical, high-impact interventions; the Program works toward sustainable scale-up to include the health systems that deliver these interventions. In addition to contributing to high-level technical and policy dialogue at the global level, the Program provides tailored technical assistance to help countries meet specific priorities and contextual needs of local RMNCH programs.

BREAKTHROUGH-ACTION
|
Breakthrough-ACTION
|
Breakthrough-ACTION will use s...tate-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to encourage people in developing countries to adopt healthy behaviors, from using modern contraceptive methods to sleeping under bed nets to being tested for HIV. Much of the work will harness the power of communication from mass media campaigns to TV and radio dramas to simple posters in a health clinic to inspire long-lasting change. The project will also take advantage of other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve programs. The program which builds on a prior five-year, 31-country project called the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) is expected to be double the size. It will be led by CCP who will partner with Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace Kenya and Camber Collective. Breakthrough-ACTION will also be supported in the field by ActionSprout, the International Center for Research on Women and Human Network International. CCP is based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

AMALIMA
|
Amalima
|
Amalima is a five-year, Food f...or Peace funded activity under the Mission's development food assistance program designed to address underlying causes of food and nutrition insecurity. The program will assist vulnerable households in arid and semi-arid areas to build resilience to future food security related shocks while promoting positive nutrition behaviors to reduce chronic malnutrition among children less than five years of age. It complements the ENSURE activity, which has a similar mandate, but operates in a different part of the country.
more
|
Program Approach:
Improve ...Sustainable Access to and Availability of Food: Amalima promotes climate and conservation-sensitive agriculture practices and encourages the adoption of improved agriculture and livestock production practices;
Strengthen Community Resilience to Shocks: Amalima partners with communities to improve livelihoods and build resilience by creating and strengthening disaster risk reduction (DRR) committees through cash for asset activities, household asset vouchers, and village savings and lending (VS&L) groups that promote income generating activities and savings to build household resiliency;
Improve Nutrition and Health: Amalima improves the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices, dietary diversity, and micro-nutrient intake of pregnant and lactating women and children under two by distributing supplementary feeding rations and enhancing nutrition care practices with a combination of capacity building, mentoring, and community-based messaging delivered through care groups and community health clubs;
Promote Gender Equality: Amalima empowers women to play a key role in food security and resiliency at the household and community levels through increased access to and control over incomes, while promoting men and women to take increasingly equal responsibilities for both productive and reproductive activities. Initiative for Hygiene Sanitat...ion and Nutrition (IHSAN)
more
|
IHSAN will scale-up evidence-b...ased nutrition, hygiene, and sanitation interventions to improve the nutritional status of women of reproductive age and children under age five, focusing on the first 1,000 days of life. IHSAN will contribute to a reduction of anemia among women of reproductive age by at least 10 percent, and a reduction in stunting by at least five percent. Results will be measured by the National Nutrition Survey. IHSAN will support three objectives: (1) to enhance MoPH capacity to institutionalize nutrition programs; (2) to increase adoption of optimal nutrition and hygiene behaviors at community levels; and (3) to increase availability of nutrition and sanitation products and services. The Work Plan will emphasize activities related to good hygiene and sanitation. To ensure host-country ownership, IHSAN will work within the existing government systems using an integrated multi-sectoral approach.

MYAP: Strengthening Household ...Ability to Respond to Development Opportunities (SHOUHARDO) II
more
|
The Strengthening Household Ab...ility to Respond to Development Opportunities (SHOUHARDO) II activity will increase the food security of rural households in 11 of the poorest districts. The activity improves food availability through the promotion and extension of food crops, fisheries, livestock, and poultry; and access to food and markets, and creating alternate incogeneration activities. The activity improves the health and nutrition of pregnant women and children under the age of two by increasing access to community health and nutrition services, such as growth monitoring, pre-and post-natal care, and food rations. The activity supports disaster mitigation through the construction of shelters, wave protection walls, earthen embankments and the training of communities on emergency response and contingency planning. The activity will form groups for gender equality, early childhood care and development, and capacity of formal/informal institutions to improve women's empowerment.

Digital Square works to create... a future where governments and decision-makers can access the information they need to ensure better health outcomes for all. The activity aims to perpetuate the pilot programs by aligning donors and the digital community around shared goals, supporting technical capacity in-country, coordinating and aligning investments around government priorities to achieve lasting impact, and promoting the reuse and adaptation of existing open-source digital health solutions. In Bangladesh, the activity will use FY17 funds to continue providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to maintain the operations of the digitized supply chain management systems developed by USAID in the last six years. Digital Square will work with a local Information Technology firm to assist MoHFW to maintain and use the system for procurement planning..

Improving Nutrition through Co...mmunity-based Approaches is designed to improve communities' knowledge of proper nutritional requirements during the first thousand days of life and to increase access to health and nutrition services at community-level health facilities. The activity addresses the high levels of stunting and malnutrition in eleven selected sub-districts across three districts. Community nutrition promoters trained by this activity disseminate quality nutrition information at the community level. This activity also includes counseling on better feeding and care practices, strengthening community and family support, and increasing access to nutrition services. The activity also strengthens programmatic synergies among other key USAID and Government of Bangladesh supported nutrition programs.

STRENGTHENING MULTI-SECTORAL N...UTRITION PROGRAMMING THROUGH IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE

Strengthening Multi-Sectoral N...utrition Programming through Implementation Science
more
|
The Strengthening Multi-Sector...al Nutrition Programming through Implementation Science activity supports implementation research to refine and better target interventions and policies for nutrition services within the Feed the Future zone of influence. The activity uses a mixed-methods research approach to identify the most cost-effective and high-impact package of multi-sectoral nutrition interventions that can be nationally scaled-up. Working through a coordinated approach with the Government of Bangladesh, NGOs, and the private sector, this activity's research is testing models to determine which are most effective in significantly reducing stunting. The research considers health services, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, available social safety nets, water, sanitation, hygiene, and gender. In addition, the activity works with Government stakeholders on interpreting and using research findings to inform future multi-sectoral nutrition policy making and planning. This activity contributes to Bangladesh's national health policy and investment decisions. It is aligned with agency-wide objectives under Global Health such as Preventing Child and Maternal Deaths, as well as the Global Food Security Strategy's objective of a well-nourished population, especially women and children. Undernutrition is estimated to be an underlying cause of 45 percent of child mortality and anemia contributes to 20 percent of maternal mortality. The activity is designed to use multi-sectoral programming approach to improve nutritional status in Bangladesh. This activity supports the U.S. National Security Strategy, the State-USAID Joint Strategic Plan Goal Two, and the U.S. Government's mission objective of improved health status in Bangladesh.
