Caritas-Rwanda will continue t...o improve the nutritional status of mothers and children (especially those under 2 years of age) through community-based interventions in nine districts. The project will seek to improve the well-being of HIV/AIDS-affected orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and improve the nutritional status of adults living with HIV through cooking demonstrations, nutrition assessments (anthropometric measurements) and nutrition counseling. Of the 73,482 people supported under this program, 14,416 are OVCs, 36,000 are children under five years, and 7,200 are pregnant and lactating women. The project uses cost effective community-based solutions like internal savings and loan groups, farmers field schools and the positive deviance hearth model to address nutritional and financial needs of beneficiaries, with emphasis on resilience and empowerment through economic strengthening, food security, nutrition and hygiene, and increased access to health services.

Gikuriro Activity
|
The primary purpose of the USA...ID-supported Gikuriro (Good Growth) integrated nutrition and WASH project is to improve the nutritional status of women of reproductive age and children under five years of age, with an emphasis on the 1,000 day window of opportunity from pregnancy until a child's second birthday. In addition, Gikuriro will promote WASH activities, including handwashing practices, safe water use to prevent diarrheal infections. Through Gikuriro, USAID is expected to reach an estimated 324,000 children under five years of age and their mothers with nutrition and hygiene interventions in eight districts of Rwanda. The Improved Services for Vuln...erable Populations (ISVP) Activity aims to improve the protection of vulnerable populations against adverse circumstances. Global Communities is implementing the Improved Services for Vulnerable Populations (ISVP) Program, which aims to assist 50,000 vulnerable households in 12 districts. Locally known as USAID Twiyubake, the program is designed to build and enhance lasting self-reliance in a way that promotes mutual support. The program objectives include increasing capacity of families and communities to provide better care for vulnerable individuals; improving household and community care and support practices for vulnerable populations, especially children; and increasing access to education and social services for vulnerable populations.

LIBERIA AGRICULTURAL UPGRADING..., NUTRITION AND CHILD HEALTH PROJECT (LAUNCH)
more
|
Liberia Agricultural Upgrading..., Nutrition and Child Health Project (LAUNCH)
more
|
Liberia Agricultural Upgrading..., Nutrition and Child Health Project (LAUNCH) is working to reduce chronic malnutrition levels in food insecure, vulnerable populations in Bong and Nimba Counties. They are working with smallholders to sustainably improve production practices, increase farm management skills, build resilience, improve infrastructure and expand economic opportunities through a value chain approach. The health and nutrition strategy focuses on the prevention of malnutrition, the early identification and treatment of acute malnutrition to prevent further deterioration of health/nutritional status, and the promotion of high-impact health and nutrition interventions at household, community and facility levels. Households receiving supplementary food rations are targeted for inclusion in the agricultural and livelihoods activities. The ration has been carefully designed to reduce malnutrition without craeting beneficiary dependencies and undermining a market approach. Education activities develop community capacities to support education and increase access by youth to livelihoods education that increases their employability.

LAUNCH is a
USAID/Food for Pea...ce (FFP) project,
managed by ACDI/VOCA in
collaboration with Project Concern ,
working in the Bong and Nimba
counties of Liberia to improve food
security and reduce chronic
malnutrition of vulnerable women and
children under five years old4. The
project aims to reduce chronic
malnutrition by providing food
supplementation and nutritional
information and improve maternal,
infant and young child feeding and
hygiene practices (breastfeeding). Each
month about 9,000 beneficiaries
participate in the food distribution, with
the number fluctuating by season.
Under LAUNCH there are food
distributions once a month, at a
designated point on a designated day.
Although this project is primarily
focused on nutrition, it does contain an
agriculture component. In addition, its
use of mobile data collection even
within its nutrition component is
relevant to agriculture development
projects. (LBR 76_41176 Liberia Agricultural Upgrading, Nutrition and Child Health Project (LAUNCH) p.3)

BREAKTHROUGH-ACTION
|
Breakthrough-ACTION
|
Breakthrough-ACTION will use s...tate-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to encourage people in developing countries to adopt healthy behaviors, from using modern contraceptive methods to sleeping under bed nets to being tested for HIV. Much of the work will harness the power of communication from mass media campaigns to TV and radio dramas to simple posters in a health clinic to inspire long-lasting change. The project will also take advantage of other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve programs. The program which builds on a prior five-year, 31-country project called the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) is expected to be double the size. It will be led by CCP who will partner with Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace Kenya and Camber Collective. Breakthrough-ACTION will also be supported in the field by ActionSprout, the International Center for Research on Women and Human Network International. CCP is based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Prevention and Treatment of Mo...derate Acute Malnutrition in Tajikistan
more
|
The project supports WFP, unde...r the Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programme (TSFP), to assist malnourished children over a period of 12 months in 140 Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in Khatlon region through provision of specialized nutritious food. The targeted districts were selected jointly with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population, taking into consideration the high malnutrition rate and the capacity of the public health centers both in terms of human resources and infrastructure. This is done in order to ensure proper implementation and the possibility of replicating sustainable models in other regions. While WFP provides the treatment to moderate acute malnourished children, UNICEF will support the cases of severe acute malnutrition at the PHCs and District Therapeutic Feeding centers.

The Food and Nutrition Technic...al Assistance Project (FANTA) has been working to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable individuals, families, and communities in developing countries by strengthening food security and nutrition policies, programs, and systems. The project provides comprehensive technical support to USAID and its partners, including host country governments, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations. FANTA works at both the country and global levels, supporting the design and implementation of programs in focus countries, and building on field experience to strengthen the evidence base, methods, and global standards for food security and nutrition programming.
