(Bilateral, unspecified 202765-101 Knowledge Partnership Programme (KPP) p.2). Regarding Health, Nutrition & disease control in 2015: • During the period under review, two projects have been completed focusing access to low cost quality essential medicines. The recommendations emerging from these projects aim to influence policy levers in the sector of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacture and mergers and acquisitions in the pharma industry. Both the projects used secondary data combined with in-depth stakeholder consultations. Government of India has constituted a high level Katoch Committee to promote API manufacture in India. The findings from the M&A study counters arguments that an increase in prices of essential medicines projected is attributable to M&As.
• The work stream has reached out to countries like Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Bangladesh and Nepal though its various partners
• An affordable, medical device (providing Phototherapy for Neonatal Jaundice) which KPP supported with seed funding is slowly gaining acceptance in Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya. 1,168 Brilliance units have been installed across 15 countries, and after a competitive tender process the Government of Kenya now plans to install the device in every public hospital in the country.
• Two knowledge products, five communication briefs, and two achievement reports have been developed. These are in the public domain and have also been disseminated by email to focused stakeholders.
• The Health work stream participated in the 14th World Congress on Public Health in Kolkata over the 11th-15th February 2015. This provided a unique opportunity to disseminate KPP studies to professionals from many countries especially Africa/S.E. Asia. Over 200 public health professionals from countries like Nigeria, South Africa, USA, UK, Bulgaria, Nepal, Ethiopia, China and Taiwan visited the KPP exhibition stall. A presentation was made on the overall impact of Merger and Acquisitions in the pharma industry on access, production and manufacture of medicines in India.
• KPP presented findings from a KPP supported consultation on Artemisinin Resistance (AR) at the International Conference on “Antimicrobial Resistance, Novel Drug Discovery and Development: Challenges and Opportunities” 2nd-3rd March, 2015. This allowed outreach to over 50 participants, including international drug research experts.
• The DFID Health Adviser responsible for this work left early in the year and so DFID technical oversight and strategic direction has been more limited since then.

Between June 2012 and February... 2016 over 616,000 medical consultations were provided in Lebanon (54%), Jordan (24%), Turkey (18%) and Iraq (4%). Of the total number of consultations provided 49% were for primary health care and 51% for trauma. Results are largely attributable to one undisclosed INGO partner (61%) and MdM (27%), followed by ICRC (5%), HI (4%), and IRC, SCI, UNICEF and UNRWA (all with <1%). (completion Review) The programme aims to save the lives of, reduce suffering of and maintain dignity of, those affected by the Syria crisis in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. It addresses critical humanitarian needs through a range of interventions which have been weighted as follows:
1. Food - 25%
2. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) – 15%
3. Health – 20%
4. Shelter and Non-food items (NFIs)15%
5. Agriculture/ Livelihoods – 5%
6. Protection – 10% --> composed of safe areas for children; psychological support for adults; SGBV
7. Education – 5%
8. Enabling activities – 5%
The output weighting reflects both prioritisation of needs and the approximate share of the budget. The weighting remains the same for the next phase of the programme.

The most significant driver of costs in the programme has been technical assistance, including the cost of external consultants and core programme staff. With the additional costs of the DDCF and GIS technology, this makes up 78 percent of all expenditure. Remaining costs relate to the financial aid to government for school rectification (13%), externally financed outputs through the WB (8%) and design and monitoring (1%). DFID is looking to extend the programme however, some funds from the total programme budget may remain unspent and DFID will explore how these funds can be used most effectively

To improve the for-profit heal...th market in Kenya, so that poor people get better value for money they spend on health.
more
|
UK support through DFID is req...uired to fund an action-research programme to synthesise existing information and gather new knowledge about pro poor private sector markets, and to pilot interventions in the health market similar to those in DFID Kenya’s Market Assistance Programme (MAP) to improve access for poor people. By testing interventions such as strengthening the commercial drug supply chain, increasing the supply of qualified health workers in areas of need, and improving the quality of for-profit providers, the project will identify how the health market and its supporting system can best be supported in the future to improve poor people’s health. As a result, development partners will better understand the role of the for-profit market in the overall health system; and learn how to encourage pro-poor changes by manufacturers, distributors, shop-keepers, nurses and clinical officers running clinics, as well as generate interest among investors looking to extend for-profit networks which serve the poor. more
|
Promoting development of green... principles in Chinese healthcare, including in infrastructure and service delivery to support sustainable healthcare
more
|
The project is designed to all...ow the Chinese government to draw upon UK experience to promote the development of green health and care systems which support intelligent, resilient and sustainable healthcare. It will achieve this by running provincial level pilot initiatives to strengthen the function of health management and promote green infrastructure, operation and service delivery. A final workshop will present to Chinese Ministries an overview of international case studies on sustainable healthcare, including from the UK, and will generate options for China's adoption of green principles in its healthcare systems.

RESEARCHING POPULATION AGEING ...TO SUPPORT THE DESIGN OF MEDICAL REIMBURSEMENT POLICIES IN SHANGHAI

Researching population ageing ...to support the design of medical reimbursement policies in Shanghai
more
|
The project is designed to dra...w on UK expertise to reveal the relationship between age and medical expenses, and the characteristics of end-of-life expenses among the elderly in Shanghai. Through undertaking a 'value for money' analysis to identify inappropriate resource use on elderly care in Shanghai, and learning lessons from the UK context, this project will provide a reference for policy design and implementation in Shanghai, both under the 13th Five-Year Plan and through guidance that the Shanghai Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau is due to issue on the Elderly Care Social Security System by the end of 2016. Chinese adoption of UK proposals in the study has the potential to generate opportunities for international businesses, including UK ones.
