To improve the welfare outcome...s of the currently underserved communities in Lagos state and Northern Nigeria by making a significant financial contribution towards the solar power electrification of public institutions, such as schools and hospitals. The intervention is expected to, by year 2020, ensure improved welfare outcomes for more than 2.8 million people using domestic solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, with 190,000 school pupils and 4.7 million clinic patients benefiting from public institutions with PV systems, create more than 3000 jobs and ensure greater effectiveness of DFID's other health and educational sector intervention in Nigeria.
more
|
The expected results are (note... that these differ slightly from the original business case with respect to numbers of schools and clinics):
More than 47 megawatts (MW) of installed PV capacity;
Avoided emissions of 3.0 million tonnes CO2e from PV installations over their operational lifetime, replacing kerosene, diesel and grid use;
Improved effectiveness of 172 secondary schools and 11 health super clinics through cleaner and more reliable access to energy;
Improved welfare outcomes for more than 2.8 million people using domestic PV, with up to 138,000 school pupils and up to 4.7 million clinic patients benefiting from public institutions with PV systems;
36,000 additional Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) averted in PV electrified clinics;
Improved effectiveness of institutional PV systems, with at least 95% operational after 4 years;
More than 3,000 jobs supported across the PV supply chain; and
Greater effectiveness of DFID’s other health and educational sector interventions in Nigeria.

The outcome will be a total of... 7 million people with sustainable access to sanitary means of excreta disposal, improved hygiene and access to safe water by November 2018. This will include 4.68 million new beneficiaries supported through this programme and continued support provided to 2.32 million people benefitting from Phase I of the programme. In addition, the programme will ensure 3,500 schools and over 1,200 health centres have adequate WASH facilities. (NGA 202977-104 Sanitation, Hygiene and Water in Nigeria Programme (SHAWN II) p.6)

The Sub-National Governance pr...ogramme (SNG) is DFID Pakistan's flagship programme supporting public financial management, planning and local government reform in the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). It is a £38.1 million, 5 year programme from April 2013 to 2018. It works in 12 districts, 6 in each province [Buner, Haripur, Nowshera, Dera Ismail Khan, Karak and Lakki Marwat in KP & Hafizabad, Mandi Bahuddin, Sheikhupura, Bahawalnagar, Sahiwal, and Vehari in Punjab]. This programme focuses on consolidating and embedding key reforms and building the capacity of government systems to take evidence-based decisions and improve health and education outcomes.

7.5m people (the poorest 30% o...f the population of 12 Districts) having better access to services as a result of TA building the capacity of frontline delivery units (e.g. health centres, schools) and almost 4m benefiting from the scaling up of pilot initiatives (e.g. water and sanitation, rubbish collection. - The SNG programme has spent £20.4 million from its total budget of £38.1 million. The most significant driver of costs in the programme has been technical assistance, including the cost of external consultants and core programme staff. With the additional costs of the DDCF and GIS technology, this makes up 78 percent of all expenditure. Remaining costs relate to the financial aid to government for school rectification (13%), externally financed outputs through the WB (8%) and design and monitoring (1%). DFID is looking to extend the programme however, some funds from the total programme budget may remain unspent and DFID will explore how these funds can be used most effectively

STRENGTHENING QUALITY INFRASTR...UCTURE (QI) IN MYANMAR
more
|
Strengthening quality infrastr...ucture (QI) in Myanmar
more
|
After almost four decades of e...conomic isolation, an unprecedented transformation process with far-reaching economic and social reforms was initiated by Myanmar. Hereby, essential factors include the repealing of the economic sanctions as well as Myanmar's efforts to be integrated into ASEAN. As the current economic growth is essentially based on raw material exports and the service sector, the diversification of the product basis regarding the exploitation of new export markets is of particular importance. The access to external markets as well as the integration into regional production networks and global supply chains requires the compliance with technical regulations and standards as well the avoidance of technical barriers to trade. The requested services will be provided by a functioning QI which complies with international requirements and – in addition – is also the basis for a functioning consumer, health and environmental protection.
