VIDEO EDUTAINMENT: IMPACT ON M...ATERNAL AND INFANT OUTCOMES IN TORO, NIGERIA (IMCHA)

Video Edutainment: Impact on M...aternal and Infant Outcomes in Toro, Nigeria (IMCHA)
more
|
Faced with one of the highest ...maternal mortality rates in the world, Nigeria has identified maternal and child health as a priority issue. This project will help address the problem through research that assesses the reception, cost, and impact of home visits. It will also examine how video edutainment (educational entertainment) and other tools can influence maternal and infant outcomes. Women at risk Women at highest risk in Nigeria are those who are least able to attend health facilities to receive conventional antenatal care during pregnancy. Typically, they are socially isolated, overworked, impoverished, subjected to gender violence, and poorly educated. Community action and education have a central role to play in ensuring that mothers and their infants have access to health care. Pilot project for better outcomes This project will test and implement universal home visits that address these gaps across pilot sites in Nigeria as a strategy to improve maternal and child health. The methodology involves a large-scale cluster randomized controlled trial to measure the impact of strategies for implementing home visits and video education tools (video edutainment) within the country's health services. The project team will engage government officials to maximize opportunities to integrate home visits into health services for pregnant women and their spouses in randomly selected wards of the Toro Local Government Authority. The goal is to scale up these approaches at the national level. The project will offer a better understanding of how home visits and video education during pregnancy can influence health outcomes. It will generate evidence to support large-scale trials to improve survival rates for pregnant women and new mothers in Nigeria. Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

SCALING UP CARE FOR PERINATAL ...DEPRESSION FOR IMPROVED MATERNAL AND INFANT HEALTH IN NIGERIA (IMCHA)
more
|
Scaling Up Care for Perinatal ...Depression for Improved Maternal and Infant Health in Nigeria (IMCHA)
more
|
Even though effective treatmen...ts are available, perinatal depression often goes untreated, especially in low- and middle-income countries where there are shortages of mental health specialist resources. This project aims to address that challenge by demonstrating how community midwives who are trained to work in resource-constrained settings can deliver effective interventions for depression among new mothers.Community treatments for depression The World Health Organization (WHO) produced the Mental Health Gap Action Programme Intervention Guide to help non-specialists recognize and treat select mental health conditions, including perinatal depression. The project team will test the guide's effectiveness in providing support to mothers with perinatal depression at the community level. Using a participatory research approach, researchers will implement training for community midwives in Osun State, Nigeria. The training aims to enhance their skills so they can identify and support women with perinatal depression. The research will also identify organizational factors that can support the scaling up of mental health services in Nigeria. The project will help generate knowledge on the training methods that can equip midwives with skills to deliver care for perinatal depression. The findings will help strengthen efforts in other low- and middle-income countries to develop relevant strategies and programs to address perinatal depression.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This project brings together a...nd supports the uptake of maternal and child health research evidence into policies and practices in West Africa. A part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, the project's impact will be felt at the national and regional levels in Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, and Senegal.Knowledge and action neededWhile health systems research has informed improvements in maternal, newborn, and child health globally, there are critical knowledge and implementation gaps in West Africa. Preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths, illnesses, and disabilities continue to burden countries in the region. Partnerships to prevent death, illness, and disabilityWest African governments, the international community, and the Government of Canada are committed to improving maternal, newborn, and child health. The West African Health Organisation (WAHO) will work with implementation research teams (IRTs) to provide evidence for regional and national decision-makers. Their work will complement the IRTs' efforts to integrate the evidence they generate into policies and practice. WAHO will foster research uptake in policies and practices by building decision-makers' understanding and promoting more collaboration with researchers.Program focuses on maternal and child healthInnovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa is a CA$36 million, seven-year research program that seeks to assist countries in resolving pressing health systems challenges to improve maternal, newborn, and child health. It is designed to support -two independent policy organizations (consortia)-approximately 20 implementation research teams. This project supports the West African Health Organisation to be a pivotal health-policy research organization in West Africa. WAHO will leverage evidence generated by the IRTs and other researchers in its policy advisory work. The program is a collaboration between Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the International Development Research Centre.

WEST AND CENTRAL AFRICAN PARTN...ERSHIP FOR MATERNAL, NEWBORN, CHILD, AND ADOLESCENT HEALTH RESEARCH

|
West and Central African Partn...ership for Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health Research
more
|
High rates of maternal death a...nd teen pregnancy persist in West and Central Africa. Research and programming efforts are not sustainably reducing these rates. The challenge is how to link the evidence on useful health interventions with evidence on how to deliver the interventions effectively. This project aims to build the foundation for delivering better maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health care by addressing this gap and enhancing the capacity of researchers and leaders. Bridging gaps and barriers to better health outcomes A partnership of leading West and Central African health researchers and institutions has designed this project through a series of regional dialogues. The partners will build a bilingual knowledge base for use by research and training institutions to develop academic programs, short courses, and mentoring programs. They will support continuous capacity development through the following activities: -Develop and conduct summer schools for researchers, health officials, journalists, and civil society -Provide small research grants -Design and manage mentoring programs for emerging leaders -Develop a website and a vibrant community of practice Through this process, the partnership aims to bridge the geographic and linguistic divides that fragment efforts across the region. Project partners include: -Ghana Health Service -West African Health Organisation -L'Institut supe¿rieur des sciences de la population -African Media and Malaria Research Network -Universite¿ de Yaounde¿ I -Laboratoire d'e¿tudes et de recherche sur les dynamiques sociales et le de¿veloppement local -College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus Eleven other institutions are members of the partnership. It covers nine Francophone and Anglophone countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Co¿te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal.

An mHealth strategy to reduce ...eclampsia and maternal and infant death in Tanzania (IMCHA)
more
|
In Tanzania, the maternal mort...ality rate of 454 deaths per 100,000 live births means that every hour, another woman dies in childbirth. Many of these deaths are avoidable if symptoms such as high blood pressure, known as eclampsia, and associated challenges arising during pregnancy, are recognized and treated. This requires trained birth attendants and appropriate equipment for early and accurate detection. This project aims to test interventions that improve monitoring of pregnant women for pre-eclampsia and eclampsia - conditions that, if left untreated, can result in maternal and neonatal deaths. With the support of an existing mobile phone-based system, this project will provide education and practical skills to health workers for improved detection and management of these conditions. Mobile phones and other tools will capture and use real-time data related to maternal and child health. The evidence generated from this project will provide a scientific basis for integrating a targeted mobile health (mHealth) strategy to improve education, detection and management of eclampsia and pre-eclampsia. Findings from the study are also expected to support sustainable strategies to scale up the intervention from the eight districts included in the study. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

Innovating for Maternal and Ch...ild Health in Africa (IMCHA) – Learning event

|
The Innovating for Maternal an...d Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) Initiative launched in 2014. The seven-year $36 million initiative is funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. To improve coherence, enhance mutual learning, and amplify results, IMCHA envisaged three all-teams workshops. The third and final workshop is planned for November 2019 at the South Africa-based Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study. The workshop is planned as a learning event with a focus on sharing experiences and lessons in terms of thematics and geographies. A session will be scheduled specifically for the co-principal investigators/decision-makers to learn from each other and draw inspiration from what their peers from other research teams are doing/have done to translate IMCHA research evidence into policies and practices and make an impact in improving maternal and child health outcomes in their settings. This workshop will include a capacity strengthening component in specific areas such as equity, scale-up, data management, and communications, some of which were identified in the IMCHA mid-term evaluation. Finally, the workshop will help prepare for IMCHA legacy and closing requirements. Furthermore, benefitting from the presence of all teams, interviews, and other communication activities will be carried out to help document IMCHA's impact and legacy. This workshop will provide an opportunity to have all three partners — IDRC, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Global Affairs Canada — in attendance to learn more about the impact and achievements of the Initiative.

This project aims to improve t...he health, wellbeing, and enjoyment of rights of women and girls, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights. It seeks to reach those most in need by targeting vulnerable women and girls, including those who are living in fragile states and humanitarian contexts. The project is designed to build a global advocacy momentum on behalf of women and girls to address the root causes of poverty and discrimination. It mobilizes youth to take leadership roles in ensuring the realization of their rights and raises awareness of poor health, gender-based violence, and discrimination affecting women and girls. The project also seeks to identify the gaps in gender-disaggregated data and disseminate existing evidence to influence decision-makers to integrate the gender aspect in programs and services. Project activities include: (1) conducting global advocacy on gender equality; (2) supporting community level advocacy; (3) filling data gaps on the health, rights, and wellbeing of women and girls; (4) training youth advocates; (5) convening the 2019 Women Deliver conference to be held in Vancouver; and (6) supporting advocacy on the health and rights of women and girls in humanitarian settings.

This initiative aims to improv...e the health and nutrition status of poor and vulnerable mothers, newborns and children in select regions by working with local health authorities. It directly addresses malnutrition in the first 1000 days of children's lives in targeted districts and informs national nutrition policies in the targeted countries. Malnutrition is the cause of over 3 million child deaths annually and results in non-communicable conditions, such as stunting, wasting and anemia, as well as poor motor, cognitive and social development. The project is being implemented in Bangladesh (Thakurgaon District), Myanmar (Thabaung Township), Kenya (Elgeyo Marakwet county) and Tanzania (Singida and Shinyanga Regions). The effects of malnutrition in these countries are significant with serious social and economic implications. Such conditions are especially pronounced in rural regions, such as those targeted by the project. The project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.64 million individuals, including more than 674,000 women, 553,000 children and 418,000 men, and indirectly reach an estimated 2.1 million individuals who are not targeted by the project but who benefit from the strengthened health system and improved health services. Policy changes in nutrition and wider application of existing policies as a result of the project advocacy efforts also have a positive impact on indirect beneficiaries. The sexual and reproductive health component of this project will directly benefit 1,284,533 people, including 549,182 women of reproductive age and 93,430 children under two years of age. Other direct beneficiaries include 309,728 adolescents (10-19 year old girls and boys), 332,194 adult men, and 2,148 service providers at facility and community levels. In addition, the initiative's activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 3 million Canadians. Project activities include: (1) recruiting, training and equipping community healthcare workers to promote and provide basic health services; (2) training local health councils in improved data collection, analysis and reporting to inform planning and delivery of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services; (3) raising awareness of primary caretakers on key nutritional practices, including dietary diversity; (4) providing inputs and training in the development of home gardens; (5) training of peer-based networks/care groups on malnutrition prevention and sexual and reproductive health rights issues (i.e. family planning, early forced child marriage, sexual gender-based violence; (6) informing and increasing community participation in policy dialogue with governments on MNCH and sexual and reproductive health and rights; and, (7) implementing interactive media and linking Canadians with empowered youth in a mentorship program to improve the knowledge and ability of Canadians to engage in international MNCH, nutrition, sexual and

This project aims to improve t...he sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and adolescent girls in Burkina Faso, Liberia, Pakistan and Sierra Leone, through menstrual health and hygiene interventions. Poor menstrual health and hygiene exacts a tremendous human and financial toll. A growing body of global research links menstruation with school absenteeism, limited mobility, and lost workplace productivity. Project activities include: (1) infrastructure work to refurbish latrines so that they are secure, accessible and equipped to serve the needs of women and girls for menstrual hygiene management (including private space with adequate water supply for washing and disposal facilities for sanitary pads) at schools, healthcare facilities and in communities; (2) improving and/or developing supply chains for menstrual hygiene products that present economic opportunities to engage local business, women entrepreneurs and youth-led groups; and (3) policy interventions to examine national and district plans, policies and budgets in order to provide adequate consideration of the menstrual health and hygiene needs of women and adolescent girls in schools, communities and healthcare centers. This project is expected to directly benefit 91,450 people, of which 72% are women, including youth under the age of 19. The project is led by WaterAid Canada, in partnership with Canada World Youth and Simavi.

Promoting positive masculinity... for sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa
more
|
More than half of residents in... sub-Saharan Africa's largest cities, and a growing proportion of Africans overall, live in congested informal settlements (also called slums). Residents of Africa's urban informal settlements are at elevated risk for poor sexual and reproductive health and rights, unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortion, and sexual and gender-based violence. Interventions focused on men and boys expand the scope for challenging gender norms and masculine ideals that impede sexual and reproductive health and rights and sustain gender inequality in these communities. While implementers of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights programs in Africa argue that their work is grounded in current international evidence on what works to promote the engagement of men and boys in gender equality and improved sexual and reproductive health and rights, little systematic research exists on the implementation, effectiveness, and effects of these initiatives. This project will generate and disseminate evidence on the implementation, effectiveness, and challenges of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights and positive masculinity initiatives in poor urban settlements. It will assess gender attitudes, norms, and practices as well as the sexual and reproductive health and rights behaviours of men and boys participating in these programs. It will support existing male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights initiatives to use evidence for program improvement. It will also document attitudes and changes in gender norms. Finally, it will strengthen the capacity of project team members and others and foster strategic alliances and partnerships with critical stakeholders, including policymakers and implementers, to ensure the more effective delivery of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights programs.

The initiative supports the im...plementation of maternal, newborn and child health programs, contributing to the reduction in the number of maternal, newborn and child deaths in the country's northern region by working with the Ministry of health and the local population. Activities include: 1) training health managers and health care providers to deliver high quality health services, including obstetric care; 2) rehabilitating health centers and providing essential medical equipment; 3) raising awareness of local populations on the benefits of public health services, including on the right to health; and, informing and engaging the Canadian public on maternal, newborn and child health issues in Haiti through media campaigns and learning events. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 400,000 beneficiaries, as well as to improved knowledge on maternal, newborn and child health issues in Haiti for approximately 6,000 Canadians. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Université de Montréal, and including the Centre d'étude et de coopération internationale.

COMMUNITY-BASED CAUSE OF DEATH... STUDY LINKED TO MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM AND VITAL STATISTICS IN ETHIOPIA (IMCHA)

Community-Based Cause of Death... Study Linked to Maternal and Child Health Program and Vital Statistics in Ethiopia (IMCHA)

While Ethiopia has successfull...y reduced under-five childhood mortality, there have been slower gains in reducing neonatal (newborn) and maternal mortality rates. About 220,000 children and mothers die every year in Ethiopia. For most, the causes of death are unknown as fewer than 30% of Ethiopia's births and deaths are registered. The lack of information makes evidence-based decision-making difficult. As part of national efforts to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics, the goal of this project is to overcome the maternal, newborn, and child health 'Know-Do Gap' in Ethiopia by piloting a low-cost, high-quality cause-of-death (COD) data collection and monitoring system at the national level. This will enable the development of scalable solutions to address critical gaps in maternal and child mortality that can influence local, national, and global efforts. This project aims to generate a national open-source catalogue for COD data from 1990 onward. It will also pilot a 'Global Resource to Accelerate Accurate Death Estimation and Evaluation (GRADE)' platform to decrease the cost, while increasing the quality and feasibility, of COD surveys. This project will increase the quality of local evidence to help guide Ethiopian priorities by building awareness of causes of maternal, childhood, and neonatal deaths. It will also contribute to emerging evidence at the global level under the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Systems. This is part of Canada's contribution to the work being undertaken through the Global Financing Facility focusing on the challenges facing many high burden countries to improve maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. The project will provide Ethiopia with its first-ever representative data on the causes of neonatal and maternal deaths, which will serve to better identify gaps in health services for mothers and children. The evidence will link causes of death to maternal and child health outcomes, which can be used to inform future policy. This will help Ethiopia to achieve its commitment to reduce preventable deaths by 40% by 2030, as proposed by the new UN Sustainable Development Goals. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative (2014-2020), a seven-year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.
