SheDecides is a global movemen...t to mobilize political and financial support to increase access to sexual and reproductive health and rights in developing countries. It aims to inspire a global movement of Friends and Champions to speak up for SRHR and advocate for new or improved laws and policies for women and girls. The goal is to enable girls and women, all over the world, to decide themselves with whom, when and how many children they want. Removing barriers and increasing access to modern contraception, comprehensive sexuality education, and safe abortion are critical approaches of the movement. The SheDecides Support Unit provides light-touch support to the SheDecides movement by: 1) providing resources – including small grants, communication kits, toolkits and other information to the local movements, Champions and Friends, 2) diversifying membership in the movement, 3) facilitating connections and dialogue between Champions, Friends and local movements – including through convening meetings, 4) supplying new narratives, amplifying positive messages, and creating and supporting communication platforms and channels, 5) encouraging policy dialogue and joint strategizing, and 6) encouraging new and bolder investments. As an example, the SheDecides Support Unit will provide technical support to 10 countries to develop local campaigns.

This project aims to improve t...he enabling environment, reduce gender-related barriers, push the nursing agenda forward and build the capacity of nursing teachers. This project supports women's and girls' health and enhances the voice and influence of nurses, primarily female, in the health sector in Bangladesh. This project enhances nurses' performance and professional status in Bangladesh through investment in management and leadership training, and, the development of a comprehensive and attractive nursing career path. This project also improves the nursing training facilities and the creation of a national nurse training institute. Project activities include: (1) providing support for the expansion/repair/renovation of the Mohakhali College of Nursing complex and the proposed site of the National Nurse Teachers Training Institute (NNTTI), (2) developing and implementing a NNTTI Certificate Training Program, (3) developing and implementing a system of continuous professional development, (4) developing a comprehensive competency-based, gender-responsive nursing career path, and (5) engaging influencers/policymakers in improving the status of nursing. This project delivers on Canada's Feminist International Assistance Policy priorities of gender equality, women and girls' empowerment, and human dignity. It operates on a national scale to benefit all nurses in the public and private sectors. It responds directly to the prioritized needs for Bangladesh's nursing profession outlined in the 2018 National Task Force on the Future of Nursing in Bangladesh Report. Finally, this project also addresses Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on health, gender equality, and inclusive and sustainable economic growth. The project expects to directly benefit more than 90,000 nurses and the Bangladesh Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery, and indirectly benefit project stakeholders including the Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council, targeted public and private nursing institutes and selected district hospitals. This project aims to improve t...he sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and adolescent girls in Burkina Faso, Liberia, Pakistan and Sierra Leone, through menstrual health and hygiene interventions. Poor menstrual health and hygiene exacts a tremendous human and financial toll. A growing body of global research links menstruation with school absenteeism, limited mobility, and lost workplace productivity. Project activities include: (1) infrastructure work to refurbish latrines so that they are secure, accessible and equipped to serve the needs of women and girls for menstrual hygiene management (including private space with adequate water supply for washing and disposal facilities for sanitary pads) at schools, healthcare facilities and in communities, (2) improving and/or developing supply chains for menstrual hygiene products that present economic opportunities to engage local business, women entrepreneurs and youth-led groups, and (3) policy interventions to examine national and district plans, policies and budgets in order to provide adequate consideration of the menstrual health and hygiene needs of women and adolescent girls in schools, communities and healthcare centers. This project is expected to directly benefit 91,450 people, of which 72% are women, including youth under the age of 19. The project is led by WaterAid Canada, in partnership with Canada World Youth and Simavi.

Promoting positive masculinity... for sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa

|
More than half of residents in... sub-Saharan Africa's largest cities, and a growing proportion of Africans overall, live in congested informal settlements (also called slums). Residents of Africa's urban informal settlements are at elevated risk for poor sexual and reproductive health and rights, unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortion, and sexual and gender-based violence. Interventions focused on men and boys expand the scope for challenging gender norms and masculine ideals that impede sexual and reproductive health and rights and sustain gender inequality in these communities. While implementers of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights programs in Africa argue that their work is grounded in current international evidence on what works to promote the engagement of men and boys in gender equality and improved sexual and reproductive health and rights, little systematic research exists on the implementation, effectiveness, and effects of these initiatives. This project will generate and disseminate evidence on the implementation, effectiveness, and challenges of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights and positive masculinity initiatives in poor urban settlements. It will assess gender attitudes, norms, and practices as well as the sexual and reproductive health and rights behaviours of men and boys participating in these programs. It will support existing male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights initiatives to use evidence for program improvement. It will also document attitudes and changes in gender norms. Finally, it will strengthen the capacity of project team members and others and foster strategic alliances and partnerships with critical stakeholders, including policymakers and implementers, to ensure the more effective delivery of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights programs.

The Innovating for Maternal an...d Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) Initiative launched in 2014. The seven-year $36 million initiative is funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. To improve coherence, enhance mutual learning, and amplify results, IMCHA envisaged three all-teams workshops. The third and final workshop is planned for November 2019 at the South Africa-based Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study. The workshop is planned as a learning event with a focus on sharing experiences and lessons in terms of thematics and geographies. A session will be scheduled specifically for the co-principal investigators/decision-makers to learn from each other and draw inspiration from what their peers from other research teams are doing/have done to translate IMCHA research evidence into policies and practices and make an impact in improving maternal and child health outcomes in their settings. This workshop will include a capacity strengthening component in specific areas such as equity, scale-up, data management, and communications, some of which were identified in the IMCHA mid-term evaluation. Finally, the workshop will help prepare for IMCHA legacy and closing requirements. Furthermore, benefitting from the presence of all teams, interviews, and other communication activities will be carried out to help document IMCHA's impact and legacy. This workshop will provide an opportunity to have all three partners — IDRC, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Global Affairs Canada — in attendance to learn more about the impact and achievements of the Initiative.

COMMUNITY-BASED CAUSE OF DEATH... STUDY LINKED TO MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM AND VITAL STATISTICS IN ETHIOPIA (IMCHA)

|
Community-Based Cause of Death... Study Linked to Maternal and Child Health Program and Vital Statistics in Ethiopia (IMCHA)
more
|
While Ethiopia has successfull...y reduced under-five childhood mortality, there have been slower gains in reducing neonatal (newborn) and maternal mortality rates. About 220,000 children and mothers die every year in Ethiopia. For most, the causes of death are unknown as fewer than 30% of Ethiopia's births and deaths are registered. The lack of information makes evidence-based decision-making difficult. As part of national efforts to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics, the goal of this project is to overcome the maternal, newborn, and child health Know-Do Gap in Ethiopia by piloting a low-cost, high-quality cause-of-death (COD) data collection and monitoring system at the national level. This will enable the development of scalable solutions to address critical gaps in maternal and child mortality that can influence local, national, and global efforts. This project aims to generate a national open-source catalogue for COD data from 1990 onward. It will also pilot a Global Resource to Accelerate Accurate Death Estimation and Evaluation (GRADE) platform to decrease the cost, while increasing the quality and feasibility, of COD surveys. This project will increase the quality of local evidence to help guide Ethiopian priorities by building awareness of causes of maternal, childhood, and neonatal deaths. It will also contribute to emerging evidence at the global level under the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Systems. This is part of Canada's contribution to the work being undertaken through the Global Financing Facility focusing on the challenges facing many high burden countries to improve maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. The project will provide Ethiopia with its first-ever representative data on the causes of neonatal and maternal deaths, which will serve to better identify gaps in health services for mothers and children. The evidence will link causes of death to maternal and child health outcomes, which can be used to inform future policy. This will help Ethiopia to achieve its commitment to reduce preventable deaths by 40% by 2030, as proposed by the new UN Sustainable Development Goals. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative (2014-2020), a seven-year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

Support for the SheDecides Sup...port Unit/Soutien à l'unité de soutien SheDecides
more
|

STRENGTHENING DISTRICT HEALTH ...MANAGEMENT TEAM CAPACITY TO USE HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS DATA AND TO ENGAGE STAKEHOLDERS TO ADDRESS TEENAGE PREGNANCY

Strengthening District Health ...Management Team capacity to use health information systems data and to engage stakeholders to address teenage pregnancy
more
|
Ghana's 2016-2020 Adolescent Y...outh and Reproductive Health Service Policy aims to address the structural barriers to poor access to health information and services and to strengthen social and cultural environments and community participation. Reducing teen pregnancy is one of its key priorities.Adaklu sub-district in the Volta Region of Ghana has the second-worst performance in meeting national targets to reduce teenage pregnancy levels. Challenges for the district health management team include gaps in data collection, limited capacity to analyze and apply the data, and lack of skills to effectively engage with key stakeholders to develop relevant interventions that understand and address contextual factors. While national-level coordination and management have improved, district health staff need to better interrogate routine health data and make it available for planning. These challenges are compounded by community mistrust of the district health management team after previous misunderstandings around a school health project. Iron pills, given to girls to reduce anemia, were widely believed to be contraceptives and the intervention was incorrectly attributed to adolescent health clubs established by the health ministry to prevent teenage pregnancy.Implemented by the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, Ghana, this project will teach district health teams how to use data to conduct implementation research. This will include engaging with key stakeholders to identify and apply innovative interventions. The research team will take the district health management team through the full implementation research cycle: interrogating health data, working with key stakeholders to design and implement community and health facility interventions aimed at curbing teenage pregnancy, rebuilding community trust, and promoting an approach for family and peer support for adolescents. The potential benefit is very high because rebuilding this social capital is key not only for research but also for the sustainability of adolescent health services in the district.

|
The project aims to improve th...e well-being of women and girls in 30 rural communities in Ghana's northern and Brong Ahafo regions, including aspects of food security, health, safety, and social standing. The word Babanayaa translates to one day they will see that we have changed. The project seeks to help 1,500 women, including 750 vulnerable women, attain greater well-being : (1) through an increased income due to agricultural (peanut) and livestock (goat) production and better market access, (2) by helping young women attend primary and secondary school to increase their level of education, and (3) by helping women participate more fully in community-decision-making, (4) by training women's cooperative leaders and extension officers in agriculture, financial management, and skills for a healthy future (including sexual and reproductive health, hygiene and safe food preparation, human rights) to better advocate for their own well-being, and (5) by training community responsibility-bearers in gender-responsive justice, land use and environmental care, giving them an increased ability to protect the rights of women. The project is implemented by Ghana Rural Integrated Development in collaboration with Northern Empowerment Association.

IMPLEMENTING A PERINATAL AND N...EONATAL MORTALITY SURVEILLANCE AND AUDITING SYSTEM IN JORDAN
more
|
Implementing a perinatal and n...eonatal mortality surveillance and auditing system in Jordan
more
|
This project aims to develop a...nd implement an electronic surveillance system for collecting and reporting standardized perinatal and neonatal (PNN) mortality data in four main hospitals in Jordan. This electronic surveillance system will automatically and continually transfer PNN mortality data to the Ministry of Health, which will be valuable for health decision-making in the country. The project will consist of an exploratory phase to assess the perspectives of health professionals and women toward a PNN surveillance system. This will guide the development and implementation of the PNN surveillance and auditing system. It will be in operation for a year in four major hospitals in Jordan and will then be thoroughly evaluated. The project will be overseen by a steering committee representing the major institutional actors in this surveillance system, including the Ministry of Health and a technical committee of experts. A training module will be developed with guidelines on the new system for training healthcare providers who will operate and use the system. It will also be integrated into medical and nursing curricula. Project outcomes will include a secure web-based PNN mortality surveillance system, relevant training module, and well-trained healthcare providers. A plan to scale up the system will include all hospitals in the country. The Jordan University of Science and Technology will lead the project with the collaboration of the Jordanian Ministry of Health and Birzeit University. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new Feminist International Assistance Policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

|
|

GOVERNING DIGITAL PERSONAL DAT...A TO STRENGTHEN REPRODUCTIVE, MATERNAL, NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH SERVICES DELIVERY IN FRAGILE SETTINGS

|
Governing digital personal dat...a to strengthen reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivery in fragile settings
more
|
Digital health technologies ha...ve the potential to provide greater access to better quality and more affordable care, but governing the digital personal data generated by and required to support many digital health innovations is a critical challenge. With the increased digitization of health data, it is becoming more shareable, visible, and accessible across time and locations to many different actors. This data accessibility and mobility can undoubtedly help service delivery to improve reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) services, especially in fragile settings where digital health solutions can support overburdened traditional health delivery systems. However, this digital personal data contains personally identifiable, intimate information that could expose individuals to a range of risks if it is used unlawfully and unethically, especially in fragile contexts where people are vulnerable to sexual violence, possibly unwanted pregnancies, or where reproductive rights are contested. The policy, regulatory, and operational practices to support digital health data governance are not strong enough in the Global South and could lead to breaches of personal health data, especially among women and children. In the absence of sound data governance systems, potential beneficiaries of RMNCH services are vulnerable to exploitation and exclusion, undermining the benefits of digital health. This project aims to understand the health and data governance systems in the West Bank and Gaza and Jordan. The research will explore how governments are approaching new national digital health strategies and how these systems interact with human rights concerns. The aim is to understand operational-level practices of data governance, with a particular focus on fragile settings, how these intersect with human rights and gender equality, and what changes are necessary to ensure that vulnerable populations receive trusted and quality care.

This project aims to strengthe...n the knowledge and skills of young men in Kenya and Zambia in order to embrace positive masculinity attitudes and behaviours that support gender equality and the protection of women's access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The project will focus on engaging young men through an innovative empowerment approach called Power Spaces — safe places where young people can express themselves freely and openly and acquire skills to achieve their goals. The project will generate evidence on the impact of gender transformation on women's SRHR in the targeted areas. This will be combined with rigorous, immersive research methods that involve jointly creating community engagement processes to build knowledge, capacity, and skills, particularly in young men (and women) towards improving SRHR. Overall, the project outcomes will enhance capacity and skills among young men to advocate for women's SRHR, along with improved attitudes and behaviours towards gender equality. The project will produce research that informs and strengthens male engagement in SRHR programming in targeted countries as well as the African region, a refined Power Space methodological framework for male engagement in gender equality, and specifically for the promotion of women's SRHR, and an advocacy strategy that integrates male engagement in SRHR and targets policymakers at national and regional levels. This two-year project will be jointly carried out by the Africa Alliance of Young Men's Christian Associations (YMCA) and an international research organization called ThinkPlace. Kenya YMCA and Zambia YMCA will also be engaged in implementing the project. This project is one of the four selected projects from IDRC's Gender Transformative Research Call.

Advancing health and well-bein...g of sexual minority populations in Lebanon and the Middle East and North Africa: From youth to adulthood
more
|
The sexual and reproductive he...alth and rights of adolescents and young adults, particularly of sexual minority groups, are poorly understood and often under threat because of discrimination. Vulnerable segments of the population in particular are prone to physical and psychological abuse, especially in contexts where their legal identity and existence are not recognized. In the Middle East and North Africa there is a worrying trend of appropriating the rights of minority communities, especially of those who belong to sexual and gender minority groups. These experiences, whether in schools, communities, online/digital spaces, or the workforce, can affect the health and wellbeing of vulnerable youth. This project aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the issues that face youth minority sexual groups and how bullying and harassment affect their health, wellbeing, and access to services. The project will map stakeholders and their capacities in research and evidence generation. This will form the basis for subsequent activities and for strengthening research capacity. Then, using an implementation research approach, an intervention will be rolled out to address discrimination/bullying in schools. This will serve as an entry point to talk about sexuality issues facing youth and adolescents. The research will also involve determining the cost of inaction to address sexual harassment in schools and workplaces. The knowledge that is generated will be disseminated through ongoing knowledge-sharing activities.

GAMIFICATION AND MHEALTH TO IM...PROVE MATERNAL HEALTH IN LEBANON

Gamification and mHealth to Im...prove Maternal Health in Lebanon
more
|
The Middle East and North Afri...ca region is witnessing conflicts and protracted crises in many countries, including Syria, West Bank and Gaza, and Iraq, that result in massive population displacement to neighbouring countries. Lebanon hosts the highest number of refugees per capita, with almost two million refugees. This ongoing refugee crisis places the Lebanese healthcare system in a precarious situation. Insufficient infrastructure and lack of skilled health human resources has led to sub-optimal service delivery and limited access to care, especially in disadvantaged communities and low-resource settings. With more than half of the refugees being women, most of whom are of childbearing age, access to antenatal care services is a particular challenge. Despite the fact that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees covers most costs related to antenatal care, attendance remains remarkably low, with only 16% of pregnant women receiving the four recommended antenatal care visits. This project investigates ways of improving maternal health outcomes and enhancing the uptake of antenatal care services among disadvantaged and refugee pregnant women in Lebanon by using innovative mHealth interventions, particularly mobile-based messages targeted to mothers, gamification techniques (applying elements and principles of games) to help improve the knowledge of health professionals working with refugee populations, and an approach to data that optimizes human rights and promotes participation, data disaggregation, self-identification, transparency, privacy, and accountability. The study further aims to evaluate the economic implications of implementing, and the feasibility of scaling up, these digital health solutions to improve equitable access to healthcare.

Gamification and mHealth to Im...prove Maternal Health in Lebanon
more
|
The Middle East and North Afri...ca (MENA) region is witnessing conflicts and protracted crises in many of its countries including Syria, Palestine, and Iraq, resulting in massive population displacement to other neighboring countries. Lebanon remains the country hosting the highest number of refugees per capita, with around 450,000 Palestinian refugees among which 50,000 are Palestinian refugees from Syria (PRS), in addition to more than 950,000 Syrian refugees registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), another 450,000 unregistered Syrian refugees, and around 18,000 Iraqi and Sudanese refugees among others. This ongoing refugee crisis places the Lebanese healthcare system in a precarious situation with its insufficient infrastructure and lack of skilled health human resources, leading to sub-optimal service delivery and limited access to care especially in disadvantaged communities and low-resource settings. With more than 50% of the refugees being women, most of whom are of childbearing age, access to antenatal care (ANC) services remains a particular challenge. Despite the fact that UNHCR covers most costs related to ANC, attendance remains remarkably low with only 16% receiving the four recommended ANC visits. To address this gap, mHealth interventions to support pregnant women during the antenatal, birth and postnatal period have been a growing area of interest to researchers in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Evidence from LMICs has shown that mHealth interventions targeting pregnant women can increase antenatal and postnatal care attendance, facility-based deliveries, and vaccination rates. Such efforts to enhance access of women to maternal health services comes in alignment with the maternal health agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals. The role of mHealth remains under-explored in the MENA region generally, and in Lebanon specifically. The Gamification and mHealth to Improve Maternal Health project's main research question investigates ways of improving maternal health outcomes and enhancing the uptake of antenatal care services among disadvantaged and refugee pregnant women in Lebanon through three main interventions 1) using innovative contextualized multi-component mHealth interventions, particularly mobile-based messages targeted at mothers, 2) gamification techniques to help improve knowledge of health professionals working with refugee populations, and 3) an approach to data that optimizes human rights and promotes participation, data disaggregation, self-identification, transparency, privacy, and accountability. The study further aims to evaluate the economic implications of implementing and the feasibility of scaling-up these digital health solutions to improve equitable access to healthcare.

This project aims to increase ...gender equality and promote the empowerment of refugee and displaced girls in Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Mali. This project works to address the barriers to the personal safety of girls, as well as the systemic/cultural barriers they face to realizing their right to education in the context of coronavirus (COVID-19). Project activities include: (1) conducting community outreach on the importance of refugee and displaced girls' education and sexual and gender-based violence prevention, (2) providing support to gender-responsive enrollment campaigns to refugee and displaced girls, (3) supporting safe learning spaces for girls, (4) providing gender-responsive technical assistance to education stakeholders on integrating refugee and displaced girls in post-COVID-19 education plans, (5) providing training to teachers and social workers on gender-responsive remote learning and psycho-social support for refugee and displaced girls, and (6) providing hygiene and menstrual health kits to girls in formal and non-formal learning spaces. The project expects to directly benefit 58,950 girls and adolescent girls who are internally displaced or refugees, and 15,000 vulnerable host community girls between the ages of 3 and 19. The project also expects to indirectly benefit 750,350 community members, 1,000 community-based organizations, including women's associations, 250 school management committee members, 31,200 teachers, 5,000 boys, and officials from the Ministries of Education. BUILDING AND SUSTAINING LEADER...S AND A RESEARCH COMMUNITY ON REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND GENDER IN THE MENA REGION

Building and sustaining leader...s and a research community on reproductive health and gender in the MENA region
more
|
Violence, armed conflict, terr...itorial occupation, increasing repression, and unprecedented humanitarian crises are affecting large numbers of people in the Middle East. In this context, the advances in women's health made in recent decades are at risk, and in some situations they are losing ground. The future of sustainable and meaningful progress on women's health depends on the capacity of the new generation of researchers and leaders to analyze problems, conduct interdisciplinary research, define solutions, and communicate results to influence local, national, regional, and global agendas. The aim of this project, implemented in collaboration with the American University of Beirut, is to respond to these needs by supporting context-specific and interdisciplinary research on women's health, reproductive health, and gender that is conducted by researchers based in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The Reproductive Health Working Group (RHWG), a regional network of scholars based in several Arab countries and Turkey, is an important partner in this project. Building on a consultative process led by the RHWG across its network's members, this new phase will shift leadership to younger members of the working group, establish governance and operating principles to ensure sustainability of the network, and define a research agenda in response to current issues and pressing needs regarding women's health in the region. Specifically, the project will support a cadre of young researchers, nurture an online and face-to-face network to debate and share ideas, fund seed research grants, and mobilize interest and additional resources for the network by demonstrating current relevance and identifying measurable achievements and impact of the RHWG. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new feminist international assistance policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO-led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

|

|

VIDEO EDUTAINMENT: IMPACT ON M...ATERNAL AND INFANT OUTCOMES IN TORO, NIGERIA (IMCHA)

Video Edutainment: Impact on M...aternal and Infant Outcomes in Toro, Nigeria (IMCHA)
more
|
Faced with one of the highest ...maternal mortality rates in the world, Nigeria has identified maternal and child health as a priority issue. This project will help address the problem through research that assesses the reception, cost, and impact of home visits. It will also examine how video edutainment (educational entertainment) and other tools can influence maternal and infant outcomes.Women at riskWomen at highest risk in Nigeria are those who are least able to attend health facilities to receive conventional antenatal care during pregnancy. Typically, they are socially isolated, overworked, impoverished, subjected to gender violence, and poorly educated.Community action and education have a central role to play in ensuring that mothers and their infants have access to health care. Pilot project for better outcomesThis project will test and implement universal home visits that address these gaps across pilot sites in Nigeria as a strategy to improve maternal and child health. The methodology involves a large-scale cluster randomized controlled trial to measure the impact of strategies for implementing home visits and video education tools (video edutainment) within the country's health services. The project team will engage government officials to maximize opportunities to integrate home visits into health services for pregnant women and their spouses in randomly selected wards of the Toro Local Government Authority. The goal is to scale up these approaches at the national level. The project will offer a better understanding of how home visits and video education during pregnancy can influence health outcomes. It will generate evidence to support large-scale trials to improve survival rates for pregnant women and new mothers in Nigeria.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

PROMOTING POSITIVE MASCULINITY... FOR SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS AND GENDER EQUALITY IN INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
more
|
Promoting positive masculinity... for sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa
more
|

PROMOTING POSITIVE MASCULINITY... FOR SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS AND GENDER EQUALITY IN INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

|
Promoting positive masculinity... for sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa
more
|

SUPPORT FOR THE JOBSTART PHILI...PPINES PROGRAM ROLLOUT/APPUI AU PROGRAMME D'AIDE À L'EMPLOI JOBSTART AUX PHILIPPINES
more

Support for the JobStart Phili...ppines Program Rollout/Appui au programme d'aide à l'emploi JobStart aux Philippines

This project aims to establish... a nationwide JobStart Program in the Philippines. At least 24,000 youth (60% young women) are provided access to gender-sensitive, employment-related life skills training (including reproductive health) and on-the-job experience, thereby increasing their chances of finding decent long-term employment. In the Philippines one in four young people are not employed or enrolled in education, or training, with even higher rates amongst young women and those coming from low-income families. The JobStart Program (JSP) works with the private sector to assist youth to become job-ready. Providing youth with decent jobs is vital to reducing gender inequalities and poverty. By helping youth become productive members of society through the JSP, combined with other national programs to lower the country's fertility rate, the Philippines has the opportunity to reap the benefits of its young population. JSP aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDG 8) and the Government of the Philippines' (GoP) goal to reduce poverty. This project is expected to transition to a fully funded GoP program by 2020 and build on the successful GAC-supported pilot of the JSP Program (2014-2016) also administered by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
