F.A: STRENGTHENING WOMEN'S AUT...ONOMY IN MACAYA
more
|
F.a: Strengthening women's aut...onomy in Macaya
more
|
The situation of women is frag...ile in Haiti. The power imbalance between men and women is significantly broad, and women are both socially and economically vulnerable. The project aims at increasing the autonomy of women in rural Haitian communities through strengthening their economic opportunities and participation in decision-making. This kind of empowerment requires building women's basic capacities such as literacy, organisational and leadership skills as well as their awareness on human rights, particularly women's rights and sexual and reproductive rights. Simultaneously, their economic and livelihoods skills are strengthened, in order to both increase their revenues and strengthen the valorisation of their work and role in the communities. The overall objective of the project is to empower women in Macaya by strengthening their decision-making capacities and improving their socio-economic conditions.Expected results:1. Women have the capacity to effectively participate in decision making • Functional literacy and consciousness-raising • Strengthening the social dynamics and female leadership (community development, networking, cohesion, identifying new initiatives) • Advocacy on women's rights • Awareness-raising in reproductive health, Human Rights, Gender and citizenship 2. Women's entrepreneurial initiatives contribute to their full empowerment• Development of entrepreneurial initiatives • Skills training • Support and capacity building to women's groups engaged in entrepreneurial activities • Training and awareness-raising on environmental protection and rational use of natural resources• Training of project staff Rights-holders /beneficiaries: The project beneficiaries consist of women living in rural Haitian communities. The total female population in the intervention area is roughly 1,800. Most of the women in the project area have no basic education and are illiterate. Their vulnerability and poverty is linked to not having access to resources and basic services (education, health, food, justice etc.). They undertake small trade activities (selling matches, sweets etc.), and production and sales of agricultural products (garden produce and spices). FCA's direct partner at national level is the Lutheran World Federation/Department of World Service (LWF/DWS) Haiti. LWF/DWS supports FCA in project monitoring activities and in strengthening the local implementing partner, Fondation de Nouvelle Grand Anse (FNGA).

Centre Ariadna: preventing fam...ily violence by working with victims and rehabilitation of aggressors
more
|
This is a continuation project... called Centre Ariadna: preventing family violence by working with victims and rehabilitation of aggressors which focuses on preventing and combating violence against women in Moldovia by providing safe services where victims of domestic violence will receive temporary shelter social psychological and legal assistance to meet the urgent needs of women and children. It will also work with multidisciplinary team members in northern Moldova for identification reference early intervention and provision of quality services to beneficiaries to avoid repetition of cases of domestic violence. The project will provide comprehensive and long-term reintegration of victims of domestic violence in Moldovia. In addition the project will provide rehabilitation of the domestic aggressors in order to break the cycle of violence. The long-term goal of this project is to contribute to changing the Moldovia mentality on the issues of domestic violence as being the most serious form of violence against women and children. To prevent acts of domestic violence it is not enough to work only with victims it is necessary to work with family abusers too in order to empower the positive behaviours manifested in family relationships. This project proposes to intervene by providing relevant counselling and assistance services for domestic aggressors too. Another important aspect is to develop activities to prevent domestic violence at the community level. Mobile team consisting of a social worker psychologist and lawyer will move into the territory to work with the multidisciplinary teams of the community (community social worker police officer doctor) to identify provide social psychological and legal services; as well as monitoring and evaluation of the assisted cases. The victims of domestic violence women and children who are not safe in the territory will be placed in the Maternal Center in order to overcome the crisis and finding alternative solutions for them. Victims will be assisted in completing applications for the issuance of protection orders so that family abusers will be accountable on violent behaviour towards family members. Abusers will be referred to the center of family assistance and counselling to attend training in the rehabilitation program of family aggressors. There is a signed agreement between some Moldovan ministries regarding the domestic violence addressing sustainability on these issues.

Preventive Education for Uteri...ne Prolapse in Nepal
more
|
In Nepal there are about 14 mi...llion women with Uterine prolapse. Though the expected lifetime has become longer in Nepal the amount of women who get uterine prolapse has not decreased. It has doubled from the year 2008. The problem is in the Nepalese culture. It does not protect the the women after they given a birth to a child. Many of the women are expected to work hard soon after the delivery. The aim of this project is to secure a better health for all in Nepal and to prevent Uterine prolapse- by supporting them to appreciate the motherhood and to protect the mothers after the delivery - by counselling in breast-feeding and in child care- by teaching right ways to lift and to work - by guiding to healthy living habits and versatile diet- by encouraging to smoke free lifestyle with no intoxicating agents or fear of AIDSIt is planned that the project will reach all the 75 districts in Nepal in three years. Partners in the districts will be the health and education departments of the districts and also the voluntary women workers groups which already exist in the districts. According to the plan in each district a three day seminar will be arranged in which all the health teachers from the schools health assistants midwives and the voluntary women workers in the district will be invited. Each year about 2500 health workers can take part in the seminar (100 in each district). All these will get the health education teaching material used during the seminar so that they can use it also in their own work. So the amount of the Nepalese reached by the project will be several time larger.

Due to its visibility and political contacts WD is regarded as one of the leading organizations in the gender equality issues that influences the international agenda and discussions on these issues. Finland has supported WD since 2010. WD has requested 350 000 EUR from Finland to cover the costs of participants coming from developing countries (200 000EUR) part of the costs of the virtualization of the conference (100 000EUR) and coordination of the satellite sessions (50 000EUR).

FLC/CEDEP Improving access to ...justice and security among the sexual minorities in Malawi
more
|
Institutionalised homophobia c...riminalisation of homosexuality under the Malawi Penal Code and widespread social stigma strip Malawian LGBTI persons of their legal economic health and sexual rights. Through this project CEDEP aims to contribute to safeguarding of human rights and improved access to both formal and informal justice and security for sexual minorities in Malawi. The project will train 100 LGBTI peer educators to reach out to 3000 LGBTI members about their rights and different legal redress and protection services available. Various legal and security institutions will also be trained on their human rights obligations in relation to the LGBTI community members to ensure impartial investigations and prosecution processes. The access to justice of LGBTI will be further enhanced through a legal desk helpline and pro bono lawyers. The Malawian government has given a statement in 2012 on not to arrest individuals on the basis of real or perceived sexual orientation and CEDEP will also use this as an advocacy opportunity to try to address the current discriminatory laws. The project anticipates a reduction of arrests of the LGBTI members by the police and improved access to justice services by sexual minorities in Malawi.

Empowered Girls Speak Out - Se...curing education of girls through sports in secondary schools and vocational training
more
|
Empowered Girls Speak Out is a... project aiming to empower adolescent girls aged 13-19 to understand their rights encourage equal education and promote freedom from gender-based violence. While girls are the center of social change local communities will also be targeted to facilitate girl empowerment. The project will initially work with eight communities in two districts Mtwara Municipal and Mtwara Rural. These communities were chosen with local education and health authorities who highlighted the low secondary school attendance poor academic performance and high teenage pregnancy rates of girls in these communities. Through a participatory process with adolescent girls we then established the reasons and viable solutions to these problems. The central issue to be addressed is poor academic performance which according to girls themselves is due to critical reasons such as, gender-based violence, harassment in and on the way to school, negative parental attitudes towards girls? education due to traditional gender norms, lack of positive female role models, and girls? low expectations of employability after education. Furthermore insufficient knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) combined with traditional cultural practices of encouraging adolescent sexual relations and a lack of contraceptives is leading to many school-aged pregnancies. The project will work with young girls schools and key stakeholders in the communities. Girls? Action Clubs (GACs) will provide a safe space for both in and out of school girls to share experiences and learn essential life skills and SRHR. 50 peer leaders and 24 adult tutors will be trained for GACs. GACs will utilise sports drama and dance to attract members but the main focus will be on providing training & education for their participants.Special education will be emphasised to the Unyago which is a training for young girls (6-13 year of age) about household activities and how to treat future husbands properly. Unyago training is one main reason why young girls get pregnant at early age and drop out from school. Contents of Unyago will also be revitalised with Unyago trainers.

F.A: DISABILITY INCLUSION
|
F.a: Disability inclusion
|
'Disability is not a reason fo...r early marriage but it could be a primary cause for a girl to experience rape.' This quote from a Child Marriage & Disability study in Ethiopia, is illustrative for the situation of children and young people with disabilities in the four project countries. The study confirms that adolescent with disabilities do not have any access to SRH services, which is exactly the matter that the My Body, My Future program intends to address. In all the planned interventions of the program, an effort will be made to ensure these interventions are disability inclusive. Plan Finland has signed a partnership with Light for the World, a leading disability organization with expertise in mainstreaming disability inclusion and experience in inclusive SRHR, as to ensure technical expertise within reach in all the four project countries. The main objective of the Partnership is to ensure that all stakeholders in the My Body, My Future program of Plan realize what the main barriers to disability inclusion are within society and what they and the communities can do to put a stop to these barriers, particular related to Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR). In order to do so the following areas of collaboration have been identified: 1) To identify the focus intervention areas for inclusion of persons with disabilities in sexual and reproductive health activities, as well as to assist in tracking and tracing the process of disability inclusion by contributing to monitoring, evaluation, (action) research and studies, 2) To enable trainers and disability inclusion focal persons to train implementing partners on inclusion of persons with disabilities in sexual and reproductive health activities by developing resources and training packs, 3) To ensure Plan and implementing partners raise their commitment, strengthen their capacity and seek collaboration to include persons with disabilities in sexual and reproductive health activities by strengthening capacity through training, coaching and mentoring, 4) To demonstrate and the factors that impact the inclusion process, the lessons learned are documented and disseminated among the project countries as well as in Finland as in the wider development community. Ultimately these efforts should ensure the adolescents with disabilities are not left behind.

F.A: CREATING ACCESS TO LOCAL ...REUSABLE SANITARY-PAD FOR GIRLS (ETHIPAD)
more
|
F.a: Creating Access to Local ...Reusable Sanitary-pad for Girls (Ethipad)
more
|
Approximately 52% of the femal...e population is of reproductive age in Ethiopia. Adolescent girls in the project areas stay at home during menstruation, because they don't have access to hygienic and affordable sanitary pads. In addition, lack of access to affordable sanitary pads are highly correlated with their reproductive health. Besides this, inadequate preparation for young girls not yet experiencing menstruation, knowledge gap on the linkages between menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and sanitation systems in schools and lack of awareness on MHM practices contribute to school absenteeism or complete drop out. Menstrual hygiene management is insufficiently acknowledged and has not received adequate attention in schools and rural communities in Ethiopia. In addition, sanitary pads are rare and not affordable in rural areas. As a result, the production and supply of affordable and reusable sanitary pads for rural girls and women become necessary. The project will create increased access of locally produced reusable sanitary pads by organizing and strengthening producer youth groups in project implementation areas. The producer groups will be capacitated to produce reusable pads from locally available resources and supported with needed equipment. In order to create linkage and distribution channel to the community, existing Village Saving and Loans Groups (VSLG) will be strengthened. The VSLGs will be used as outlets to distribute produced reusable sanitary pads. Collaboration with schools will make pads available in schools' MHM rooms. In addition to strengthening the supply side of locally produced reusable sanitary pads, the project also create demand by the community, school girls and youth. This will be done through awareness creations events which will be conducted by the producers, school WASH clubs and local government. The producers will also be invited to existing bazaars and exhibitions to promote their products and create market linkage. Micro and Small Enterprise development office will also provide support to legalize and strengthen the producer groups which will lead to sustainability. Such interventions will also allow for linkage with MFIs so that the producer groups will get access to credit services to diversify their business and sustain supplying reusable sanitary pads. The project is implemented in four woredas in three regions together with 16 schools and it will have 14 550 direct beneficiaries.

STRENGTHENING THE ECONOMIC AND... SOCIAL RESILIENCE OF VULNERABLE YOUTH IN THE GAMBIA

Strengthening the economic and... social resilience of vulnerable youth in The Gambia
more
|
The Gambia is one of the world...'s least developed countries. 64% of The Gambia's population is under 24 years (21% between 15-24), with health, sexuality, education and employment being of particular concern. Young people 15-30 years have the highest rates of unemployment (43.9%), with only 10% employed in the formal sector and thousands leaving the country in search of opportunities each year. In order to ensure the full potential of youth in The Gambia, this project aims to achieve three principle outcomes:1) Increase market-relevant technical skills for vulnerable youth and community members by strengthening local structures such as vocational training providers and career guidance centres and linking youth with decent work opportunities. 2) Increase vulnerable youth who are employed or self-employed by improving access to career counselling, mentorship programs, internships and apprenticeships and entrepreneurship training.3) Improve social and life skills for vulnerable youth and communities by training youth on lifeskills, SRHR and other relevant social skills. The project will be implemented in partnership with SOS CV Finland and SOS CV Gambia, who have been working together since 2014. SOS Gambia's is an extremely respected national CSO with 33 years' experience working with the most vulnerable children/youth and strengthening local communities. SOS Finland has over 50 years' experience in child protection and over ten years' experience of development co-operation in Africa. The main partners at a local level are regional authorities, local schools, vocational centres, youth clubs and other stakeholders in Lower River Region, Central River Region and Upper River Region. The direct beneficiaries will be youth from SOS alternative care and family strengthening programs as well as school dropouts and unemployed youth from the wider communities.

The aim of the project is to e...mpower girls and young women, to strengthen their skills to make informed decisions and choices in life, and to increase their decision-making power in education, sexuality, sexual and reproductive rights and health issues. In addition, the project aims at eliminating harmful traditional and cultural practices in communities, as these prevent the full realization of rights of girls. The project also aims at strengthening the skills of community and district level stakeholders and those responsible for guaranteeing girls' rights, support for school attendance and inclusive education. The target group is 3 000 girls and 600 boys, and the first phase of the project continues until the end of 2020. Capacity-building of the implementing organization Center for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education (CYECE) is one of the main objectives of the project. The cooperation was initiated in 2017 through an open call for tenders and the project implementation started in March 2018. https://www.cyecemalawi.org/

Health and Education Sector De...velopment through Skills and Knowledge Transfer in South Central Somalia
more
|
The project aims at improving ...the capacity of public sector health and education institutions to provide quality services with special focus on vulnerable groups: women children and youth through skills and knowledge transfer by the Somali diaspora. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to stabilization in South Central Somalia and Puntland through increasing access to basic services (health and education) and creating employment opportunities for the youth including women. In addition young Somalis will be placed in internship positions under the supervision of the diaspora experts at relevant institutions. The project trains health and education sector professionals to produce quality public services in health and education and to administer the resources of the sectors. The trainers are diaspora experts especially Finnish diaspora who work and share their expertise in the sectors. The Mid-Term Evaluation which was finalized in August 2018 showed that results have been gained in both health and education sectors. For example the intake of patients at Yardimeli Hospital in Mogadishu has increased significantly in a short period of time from around 800 patients in July 2017 to around 4000 in March 2018. Moreover the number of assisted births increased substantially. The diaspora experts placed at the Ministry of Education were successful in supporting the organizational reform and writing key strategic planning documents for the sector. According to the Mid-Term Evaluation the project was very relevant in filling the gaps and specialized needs in the institutions. According to all participants both local and the diaspora the project was successful in producing sustainable results in skills and knowledge. The implementing partner is the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). From 2015 to 2019 Finland has supported the project with 4 420 000 EUR. From 2019 to 2021 the total budget for the second phase funded by Finland is 5 400 000 EUR. The budget is disbursed as follows: 1 MEUR in 2019, 24 MEUR in 2020, 2 MEUR in 2021.

PROMOTING SEXUAL AND REPRODUCT...IVE HEALTH OF WOMEN AND GIRLS WITH DISABILITIES IN KENYAN HEALTH SERVICES

Promoting Sexual and Reproduct...ive Health of Women and Girls with Disabilities in Kenyan Health Services
more
|
The project titled Promoting S...exual and Reproductive Health of Women and Girls with Disabilities in Kenyan Health Services is a new project. The project addresses the problems of:-low access by women and girls with disabilities (W/GwD) to high-quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and -the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of W/GwD are poorly realized in Kenya. Persons with disabilities (PWD) can highly benefit from inclusion in SRH programs designed to reach the general population but only if sufficient and skillful efforts for inclusion are made. This issue is critical from both the point-of-view of the rights and autonomy of W/GwD as well as health. Poor realization of SRHR is both a cause and effect of inequality. The aim of the project is to improve the realization of SRHR of W/GwD including maternal health family planning sexual health and prevention of gender-based violence (GBV). The project will especially target women girls and youth. The project aims to:1. Improve the access of PWD to health care services especially in terms W/GwD access to sexual and reproductive health services.2. Raise awareness of the sexual and reproductive rights of PWD among: W/GwD communities and community leaders health care professionals.3. Strengthen the capacity of disabled persons? organizations and other civil society actors to promote SRHR of PWD.The central activities include:- Awareness-raising (among PWD communities health care providers duty bearers).- Development of training materials and training of health care providers.- Improving accessibility including physical access of county sub-county and mobile health facilities for PWD.- Increasing the capacity of civil society actors to advocate for improved SRH services for PWD through training and support for advocacy. The local partners of the project are WCC (Nairobi Siaya Baringo) and ANDSEA-Kenya (Homa Bay). The project will collaborate with county/sub-county officials public health actors communities and Finnish NGOs (ADRA Finland Väestöliitto Fingo Powerbank).

The project aims on improving ...secondary school boys' academic performance health condition and attitude & behavioral change Lindi Regions in Southern Tanzania. Project operates in 117 secondary schools supporting the education through sports. The academic performance of boys in Lindi region is the worst in Tanzania. Project supports Boys Action Clubs (BAC) where secondary school boys can play football and discuss of gender equality sexual and reproductive health life skills and healthy lifestyle. One part of the project is to update boys' Jando initiation ritual. In Jando camps lasting for a month boys aged 8-17 are taught about manhood emphasizing traditional gender norms. The boys get practical teaching about manhood and various issues on sexual behavior. Jando affects negatively on boys' behavior towards girls and they start to pursue sexual relationships with them. The project will train Jando trainers Walombos to write new health education materia organise and conduct safe Jando for the boys. The project assists the Walombos to establish a National Organisation. The project cooperates with LiiKe's and its partner Sports Development Aid's (SDA) current Empowered Girls Speak Out project (EGSO) aiming to empower girls to understand their rights encourage equal education and promote freedom from gender-based violence. Project will update the EGSO-projects health education material to be used in boy's training towards better education and life skills. Gender equality and girls' human rights can be secured only if boys' and other community members also understand girls' rights to equal education and safety from discrimination and violence. The project will teach boys about gender equality and healthy perception of manhood in the secondary schools with assistance from the personnel of EGSO in Mtwara Region. The experiences and best proven practices will be used also in this project.EGSO-project has written a 100-pages health education booklet that will be updated for this new project. The disabled boys participate also in Jando and secondary education. The project enhances the inclusive equality with various trainings and materials.
