This project aims to improve t...he health, wellbeing, and enjoyment of rights of women and girls, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights. It seeks to reach those most in need by targeting vulnerable women and girls, including those who are living in fragile states and humanitarian contexts. The project is designed to build a global advocacy momentum on behalf of women and girls to address the root causes of poverty and discrimination. It mobilizes youth to take leadership roles in ensuring the realization of their rights and raises awareness of poor health, gender-based violence, and discrimination affecting women and girls. The project also seeks to identify the gaps in gender-disaggregated data and disseminate existing evidence to influence decision-makers to integrate the gender aspect in programs and services. Project activities include: (1) conducting global advocacy on gender equality; (2) supporting community level advocacy; (3) filling data gaps on the health, rights, and wellbeing of women and girls; (4) training youth advocates; (5) convening the 2019 Women Deliver conference to be held in Vancouver; and (6) supporting advocacy on the health and rights of women and girls in humanitarian settings.

ESTABLISHING A HARMONIZED REPR...ODUCTIVE HEALTH REGISTRY IN JORDAN TO IMPROVE MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH
more
|
Establishing a harmonized repr...oductive health registry in Jordan to improve maternal and child health
more
|
The lack of reliable data limi...ts the ability of health providers, planners, and community members to make informed decisions that can influence the well-being of women and children, particularly in vulnerable and undercounted populations. This project supports the participatory development of an electronic harmonized reproductive health registry (hRHR). This network is expected to link timely and accurate health data from local primary care health centres to hospital settings and governorate-level planning bodies, and then back to communities in the Mafraq governorate of Jordan. Given the high number of Syrian refugees in the Mafraq governorate, the registry will be designed to serve both refugee and non-refugee populations to address the different health needs and social contexts of the various groups. More specifically, the project will analyze existing systems and tools of sexual and reproductive health data collection and use; develop a harmonized electronic registry system using participatory approaches and established guidelines from the World Health Organization; strengthen representation of underserved groups of women, men, and youth in stakeholder meetings and governance processes; develop a dashboard of data and related analysis; assess the quality, timeliness, and reliability of data; and build the capacities of researchers and decision-makers. The main outcomes include improved quality and timeliness of reproductive health data, better integration and inter-operability among different health facilities, a strengthened referral system, increased capacities by decision-makers and providers to use health data, and costed plans to scale up the hRHR effort to other parts of the country. This project represents one of nine spanning two regions (West Africa and the Middle East) and two thematic topics (adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems). The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new Feminist International Assistance Policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development. It is being implemented by the Jordan-based Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network.

IMPLEMENTING A PERINATAL AND N...EONATAL MORTALITY SURVEILLANCE AND AUDITING SYSTEM IN JORDAN
more
|
Implementing a perinatal and n...eonatal mortality surveillance and auditing system in Jordan
more
|
This project aims to develop a...nd implement an electronic surveillance system for collecting and reporting standardized perinatal and neonatal (PNN) mortality data in four main hospitals in Jordan. This electronic surveillance system will automatically and continually transfer PNN mortality data to the Ministry of Health, which will be valuable for health decision-making in the country. The project will consist of an exploratory phase to assess the perspectives of health professionals and women toward a PNN surveillance system. This will guide the development and implementation of the PNN surveillance and auditing system. It will be in operation for a year in four major hospitals in Jordan and will then be thoroughly evaluated. The project will be overseen by a steering committee representing the major institutional actors in this surveillance system, including the Ministry of Health and a technical committee of experts. A training module will be developed with guidelines on the new system for training healthcare providers who will operate and use the system. It will also be integrated into medical and nursing curricula. Project outcomes will include a secure web-based PNN mortality surveillance system, relevant training module, and well-trained healthcare providers. A plan to scale up the system will include all hospitals in the country. The Jordan University of Science and Technology will lead the project with the collaboration of the Jordanian Ministry of Health and Birzeit University. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new Feminist International Assistance Policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

GOVERNING DIGITAL PERSONAL DAT...A TO STRENGTHEN REPRODUCTIVE, MATERNAL, NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH SERVICES DELIVERY IN FRAGILE SETTINGS
more
|
Governing digital personal dat...a to strengthen reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivery in fragile settings
more
|
Digital health technologies ha...ve the potential to provide greater access to better quality and more affordable care, but governing the digital personal data generated by and required to support many digital health innovations is a critical challenge. With the increased digitization of health data, it is becoming more shareable, visible, and accessible across time and locations to many different actors. This data accessibility and mobility can undoubtedly help service delivery to improve reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) services, especially in fragile settings where digital health solutions can support overburdened traditional health delivery systems. However, this digital personal data contains personally identifiable, intimate information that could expose individuals to a range of risks if it is used unlawfully and unethically, especially in fragile contexts where people are vulnerable to sexual violence, possibly unwanted pregnancies, or where reproductive rights are contested. The policy, regulatory, and operational practices to support digital health data governance are not strong enough in the Global South and could lead to breaches of personal health data, especially among women and children. In the absence of sound data governance systems, potential beneficiaries of RMNCH services are vulnerable to exploitation and exclusion, undermining the benefits of digital health. This project aims to understand the health and data governance systems in the West Bank and Gaza and Jordan. The research will explore how governments are approaching new national digital health strategies and how these systems interact with human rights concerns. The aim is to understand operational-level practices of data governance, with a particular focus on fragile settings, how these intersect with human rights and gender equality, and what changes are necessary to ensure that vulnerable populations receive trusted and quality care.

This project aims to strengthe...n the knowledge and skills of young men in Kenya and Zambia in order to embrace positive masculinity attitudes and behaviours that support gender equality and the protection of women's access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The project will focus on engaging young men through an innovative empowerment approach called Power Spaces — safe places where young people can express themselves freely and openly and acquire skills to achieve their goals. The project will generate evidence on the impact of gender transformation on women's SRHR in the targeted areas. This will be combined with rigorous, immersive research methods that involve jointly creating community engagement processes to build knowledge, capacity, and skills, particularly in young men (and women) towards improving SRHR. Overall, the project outcomes will enhance capacity and skills among young men to advocate for women's SRHR, along with improved attitudes and behaviours towards gender equality. The project will produce research that informs and strengthens male engagement in SRHR programming in targeted countries as well as the African region; a refined Power Space methodological framework for male engagement in gender equality, and specifically for the promotion of women's SRHR; and an advocacy strategy that integrates male engagement in SRHR and targets policymakers at national and regional levels. This two-year project will be jointly carried out by the Africa Alliance of Young Men's Christian Associations (YMCA) and an international research organization called ThinkPlace. Kenya YMCA and Zambia YMCA will also be engaged in implementing the project. This project is one of the four selected projects from IDRC's Gender Transformative Research Call.

This project aims to improve t...he sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and adolescent girls in Burkina Faso, Liberia, Pakistan and Sierra Leone, through menstrual health and hygiene interventions. Poor menstrual health and hygiene exacts a tremendous human and financial toll. A growing body of global research links menstruation with school absenteeism, limited mobility, and lost workplace productivity. Project activities include: (1) infrastructure work to refurbish latrines so that they are secure, accessible and equipped to serve the needs of women and girls for menstrual hygiene management (including private space with adequate water supply for washing and disposal facilities for sanitary pads) at schools, healthcare facilities and in communities; (2) improving and/or developing supply chains for menstrual hygiene products that present economic opportunities to engage local business, women entrepreneurs and youth-led groups; and (3) policy interventions to examine national and district plans, policies and budgets in order to provide adequate consideration of the menstrual health and hygiene needs of women and adolescent girls in schools, communities and healthcare centers. This project is expected to directly benefit 91,450 people, of which 72% are women, including youth under the age of 19. The project is led by WaterAid Canada, in partnership with Canada World Youth and Simavi.

The project aims to improve ac...cess for Malians to quality basic health services that are environmentally friendly and meet their needs, especially those of women, newborns, children and youth. It focuses on the regions of Kayes, Segou and Sikasso and seeks to provide, annually, access to quality health care to about 900,000 women of childbearing age, which represents 46% of the target population. The project provides support to nearly 150 local health centers to improve their health infrastructure and treatment of biomedical waste. Among the activities: 1) support the regional authorities for the effective integration of good health management practices in the public health strategies; 2) accompany the Malian institutions in the sustainable construction or rehabilitation of 150 water supply infrastructures for health centers (drilling, network, supply systems) and access points to water (sinks, washbasins and showers in the treatment and childbirth rooms); 3) develop maintenance plans for infrastructure and equipment; 4) train 450 members of the maintenance staff in hygiene standards and disposal of biomedical waste (transport, storage and use of tanks and incinerators); 5) educate users to the promotion of hygiene and good environmental practices; 6) train technicians in hygiene and routine maintenance of water points and latrines, while taking into account the specific needs of mothers and children, 7) train managers, nursing staff and 33 regional trainers in hygiene as well as management and recycling of biomedical waste; and 8) equip 150 health centers with solar energy systems and ensure their sustainability. This project is part of Canada's commitment to the health of mothers, newborns and children.

GOVERNING DIGITAL PERSONAL DAT...A TO STRENGTHEN REPRODUCTIVE, MATERNAL, NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH SERVICES DELIVERY IN FRAGILE SETTINGS

|

The project aims to improve th...e availability of gender- and environmentally-sensitive data. With a focus on sexual and reproductive health, this project seeks to strengthen evidence-based decision-making in the health sector in Mozambique. This includes institutionalising the Service Availability and Readiness Assessment (SARA), an internationally recognised tool, within the Ministry of Health. The tool collects critical data on the status of infrastructure, equipment and human resources in all health facilities in the country, generating a robust baseline of the services currently offered and identifying gaps in service delivery. For example, the tool provides data on whether a healthy facility provides sexual and reproductive health services (such as family planning), and whether it has the basic infrastructure, staff and equipment needed to deliver these services, such as trained healthcare professionals, medicines, water, electricity, and biological waste disposal systems. The project also aims to strengthen the Ministry of Health's capacity to analyse this data and develop strategies and budgets that respond to the health needs of women and men, boys and girls. The project is expected to reach over 1,800 health staff equipped with the necessary data to effectively plan activities, contributing to the health of approximately 20 million women and children. The project aims to improve th...e quality of sexual and reproductive health services for 62,000 adolescent boys and girls (between the ages of 10 and 19 years) in and out of school. It is designed to address the social, cultural, and gender barriers faced by adolescents and promote cultural and behavioral change within communities in the districts of Milange, Morrumbala, and Derre in Zambézia province. Project activities include: (1) providing gender-sensitive and adolescent-friendly information about sexual and reproductive health and rights and related services in schools, health centers and communities, reaching up to 50,000 community members (of which 30,000 are women); (2) promoting community engagement and raising awareness around traditional adolescent initiation rites; and (3) supporting Children's Parliaments, a platform where children and youth are able to share their views to the government and other key stakeholders.

Faced with one of the highest ...maternal mortality rates in the world, Nigeria has identified maternal and child health as a priority issue. This project will help address the problem through research that assesses the reception, cost, and impact of home visits. It will also examine how video 'edutainment' (educational entertainment) and other tools can influence maternal and infant outcomes.Women at riskWomen at highest risk in Nigeria are those who are least able to attend health facilities to receive conventional antenatal care during pregnancy. Typically, they are socially isolated, overworked, impoverished, subjected to gender violence, and poorly educated.Community action and education have a central role to play in ensuring that mothers and their infants have access to health care. Pilot project for better outcomesThis project will test and implement universal home visits that address these gaps across pilot sites in Nigeria as a strategy to improve maternal and child health. The methodology involves a large-scale cluster randomized controlled trial to measure the impact of strategies for implementing home visits and video education tools (video edutainment) within the country's health services. The project team will engage government officials to maximize opportunities to integrate home visits into health services for pregnant women and their spouses in randomly selected wards of the Toro Local Government Authority. The goal is to scale up these approaches at the national level. The project will offer a better understanding of how home visits and video education during pregnancy can influence health outcomes. It will generate evidence to support large-scale trials to improve survival rates for pregnant women and new mothers in Nigeria.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Scaling Up Care for Perinatal ...Depression for Improved Maternal and Infant Health in Nigeria (IMCHA)
more

Even though effective treatmen...ts are available, perinatal depression often goes untreated, especially in low- and middle-income countries where there are shortages of mental health specialist resources. This project aims to address that challenge by demonstrating how community midwives who are trained to work in resource-constrained settings can deliver effective interventions for depression among new mothers.Community treatments for depression The World Health Organization (WHO) produced the Mental Health Gap Action Programme Intervention Guide to help non-specialists recognize and treat select mental health conditions, including perinatal depression. The project team will test the guide's effectiveness in providing support to mothers with perinatal depression at the community level. Using a participatory research approach, researchers will implement training for community midwives in Osun State, Nigeria. The training aims to enhance their skills so they can identify and support women with perinatal depression. The research will also identify organizational factors that can support the scaling up of mental health services in Nigeria. The project will help generate knowledge on the training methods that can equip midwives with skills to deliver care for perinatal depression. The findings will help strengthen efforts in other low- and middle-income countries to develop relevant strategies and programs to address perinatal depression.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

PROMOTING POSITIVE MASCULINITY... FOR SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS AND GENDER EQUALITY IN INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
more
|
Promoting positive masculinity... for sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa
more
|
More than half of residents in... sub-Saharan Africa's largest cities, and a growing proportion of Africans overall, live in congested informal settlements (also called slums). Residents of Africa's urban informal settlements are at elevated risk for poor sexual and reproductive health and rights, unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortion, and sexual and gender-based violence. Interventions focused on men and boys expand the scope for challenging gender norms and masculine ideals that impede sexual and reproductive health and rights and sustain gender inequality in these communities. While implementers of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights programs in Africa argue that their work is grounded in current international evidence on what works to promote the engagement of men and boys in gender equality and improved sexual and reproductive health and rights, little systematic research exists on the implementation, effectiveness, and effects of these initiatives. This project will generate and disseminate evidence on the implementation, effectiveness, and challenges of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights and positive masculinity initiatives in poor urban settlements. It will assess gender attitudes, norms, and practices as well as the sexual and reproductive health and rights behaviours of men and boys participating in these programs. It will support existing male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights initiatives to use evidence for program improvement. It will also document attitudes and changes in gender norms. Finally, it will strengthen the capacity of project team members and others and foster strategic alliances and partnerships with critical stakeholders, including policymakers and implementers, to ensure the more effective delivery of male-targeted sexual and reproductive health and rights programs.

Promoting positive masculinity... for sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa

Support for the JobStart Phili...ppines Program Rollout/Appui au programme d'aide à l'emploi JobStart aux Philippines

This project aims to establish... a nationwide JobStart Program in the Philippines. At least 24,000 youth (60% young women) are provided access to gender-sensitive, employment-related life skills training (including reproductive health) and on-the-job experience, thereby increasing their chances of finding decent long-term employment. In the Philippines one in four young people are not employed or enrolled in education, or training, with even higher rates amongst young women and those coming from low-income families. The JobStart Program (JSP) works with the private sector to assist youth to become job-ready. Providing youth with decent jobs is vital to reducing gender inequalities and poverty. By helping youth become productive members of society through the JSP, combined with other national programs to lower the country's fertility rate, the Philippines has the opportunity to reap the benefits of its young population. JSP aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDG 8) and the Government of the Philippines' (GoP) goal to reduce poverty. This project is expected to transition to a fully funded GoP program by 2020 and build on the successful GAC-supported pilot of the JSP Program (2014-2016) also administered by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

|
|

This project brings together a...nd supports the uptake of maternal and child health research evidence into policies and practices in East Africa. A part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, the project's impact will be felt at the national and regional levels in East Africa, specifically in Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and South Sudan. Death, illness, disability continueWhile health systems research has informed improvements in maternal, newborn, and child health globally, there are critical knowledge and implementation gaps in East Africa. Preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths, illnesses, and disabilities continue to burden countries in the region. International effort, local resultsThere is a strong commitment from African governments, the international community, and Canada to improve maternal, newborn, and child health. The consortium established to address the challenge in East Africa includes:-Africa Population Health Research Center (lead) -East, Central, and Southern African Health Community-Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional OfficeTogether, they will work with implementation research teams (IRTs) to provide evidence for regional and national decision-makers. Their work will complement the IRTs' efforts to integrate the evidence they generate into policies and practices. The consortium will foster research uptake in policies and practices by building decision-makers' understanding and promoting further collaboration with researchers.Program addresses health systems gapsInnovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa is a CA$36 million, seven-year research program that seeks to assist countries in resolving pressing health systems challenges to improve maternal, newborn, and child health. It is designed to support -two independent policy organizations (consortia) -approximately 20 implementation research teams (IRTs)The program is a collaboration between Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the International Development Research Centre.

High rates of maternal death a...nd teen pregnancy persist in West and Central Africa. Research and programming efforts are not sustainably reducing these rates. The challenge is how to link the evidence on useful health interventions with evidence on how to deliver the interventions effectively. This project aims to build the foundation for delivering better maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health care by addressing this gap and enhancing the capacity of researchers and leaders. Bridging gaps and barriers to better health outcomes A partnership of leading West and Central African health researchers and institutions has designed this project through a series of regional dialogues. The partners will build a bilingual knowledge base for use by research and training institutions to develop academic programs, short courses, and mentoring programs. They will support continuous capacity development through the following activities: -Develop and conduct summer schools for researchers, health officials, journalists, and civil society -Provide small research grants -Design and manage mentoring programs for emerging leaders -Develop a website and a vibrant community of practice Through this process, the partnership aims to bridge the geographic and linguistic divides that fragment efforts across the region. Project partners include: -Ghana Health Service -West African Health Organisation -L'Institut supe¿rieur des sciences de la population -African Media and Malaria Research Network -Universite¿ de Yaounde¿ I -Laboratoire d'e¿tudes et de recherche sur les dynamiques sociales et le de¿veloppement local -College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus Eleven other institutions are members of the partnership. It covers nine Francophone and Anglophone countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Co¿te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal.

An mHealth strategy to reduce ...eclampsia and maternal and infant death in Tanzania (IMCHA)
more
|
In Tanzania, the maternal mort...ality rate of 454 deaths per 100,000 live births means that every hour, another woman dies in childbirth. Many of these deaths are avoidable if symptoms such as high blood pressure, known as eclampsia, and associated challenges arising during pregnancy, are recognized and treated. This requires trained birth attendants and appropriate equipment for early and accurate detection. This project aims to test interventions that improve monitoring of pregnant women for pre-eclampsia and eclampsia - conditions that, if left untreated, can result in maternal and neonatal deaths. With the support of an existing mobile phone-based system, this project will provide education and practical skills to health workers for improved detection and management of these conditions. Mobile phones and other tools will capture and use real-time data related to maternal and child health. The evidence generated from this project will provide a scientific basis for integrating a targeted mobile health (mHealth) strategy to improve education, detection and management of eclampsia and pre-eclampsia. Findings from the study are also expected to support sustainable strategies to scale up the intervention from the eight districts included in the study. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

The project aims to address ga...ps of un-met comprehensive sexual and reproductive health systems, services and education in three districts in South West Uganda. The project scales up a successful and innovative model, the Mama Toto implementation model, which focuses on strengthening existing government and civil society structures, and district and community leadership. This project aims to strengthen the capacity of local health facilities to deliver sexual and reproductive health services to the local population, as well as strengthen the capacity of community and local leaders to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and education. Project activities include: (1) aligning SRHR education and awareness messages with local priorities, national guidelines and best evidence; (2) establishing SRHR 'champions'; (3) identifying and addressing SRHR-related health system gaps; (4) providing SRHR-focused training; (5) providing minor upgrades and equipment for health facilities; and (6) improving quality of sexual and reproductive health services especially for post-abortion care, family planning, gender-based violence and HIV/STD management. This project is expected to promote and deliver SRHR services and education to 4,352 women and 2,102 men, including community health workers, other community agents, youth champions, health facility clinicians, governance committee members and district leaders. The project is expected to indirectly benefit 950,000 people (490,000 women and 460,000 men) comprised of the populations in the targeted districts and communities.

GOVERNING DIGITAL PERSONAL DAT...A TO STRENGTHEN REPRODUCTIVE, MATERNAL, NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH SERVICES DELIVERY IN FRAGILE SETTINGS

|

This project supports the work... of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH), the advocacy and accountability arm of the Every Women Every Child (EWEC) global movement. Through its alliance of over 1,000 organizations from the sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health communities, the PMNCH provides a platform for organizations to maximize global efforts to improve maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health. PMNCH works to advance the 2030 Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health (Global Strategy) by: (1) prioritizing engagement in countries: focusing on populations and places with the highest burden, greatest need and most inequity, (2) driving accountability: nurturing a culture of open accountability to drive purposeful engagement and sustained commitment, tracking progress and holding each other to account, (3) focusing action for results: driving advocacy and sharing learning to accelerate and focus action and financing to deliver the Global Strategy for results, and (4) deepening partnerships: engaging and aligning a broad and inclusive range of partners to deliver the full ambition of the PMNCH for action and accountability. The project contributes to poverty reduction by improving maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health who are among the world's most vulnerable populations. SheDecides is a global movemen...t to mobilize political and financial support to increase access to sexual and reproductive health and rights in developing countries. It aims to inspire a global movement of Friends and Champions to speak up for SRHR and advocate for new or improved laws and policies for women and girls. The goal is to enable girls and women, all over the world, to decide themselves with whom, when and how many children they want. Removing barriers and increasing access to modern contraception, comprehensive sexuality education, and safe abortion are critical approaches of the movement. The SheDecides Support Unit provides light-touch support to the SheDecides movement by: 1) providing resources – including small grants, communication kits, toolkits and other information to the local movements, Champions and Friends, 2) diversifying membership in the movement, 3) facilitating connections and dialogue between Champions, Friends and local movements – including through convening meetings, 4) supplying new narratives, amplifying positive messages, and creating and supporting communication platforms and channels, 5) encouraging policy dialogue and joint strategizing, and 6) encouraging new and bolder investments. As an example, the SheDecides Support Unit will provide technical support to 10 countries to develop local campaigns.
