AN MHEALTH STRATEGY TO REDUCE ...ECLAMPSIA AND MATERNAL AND INFANT DEATH IN TANZANIA (IMCHA)

|
An mHealth strategy to reduce ...eclampsia and maternal and infant death in Tanzania (IMCHA)
more
|
In Tanzania, the maternal mort...ality rate of 454 deaths per 100,000 live births means that every hour, another woman dies in childbirth. Many of these deaths are avoidable if symptoms such as high blood pressure, known as eclampsia, and associated challenges arising during pregnancy, are recognized and treated. This requires trained birth attendants and appropriate equipment for early and accurate detection. This project aims to test interventions that improve monitoring of pregnant women for pre-eclampsia and eclampsia - conditions that, if left untreated, can result in maternal and neonatal deaths. With the support of an existing mobile phone-based system, this project will provide education and practical skills to health workers for improved detection and management of these conditions. Mobile phones and other tools will capture and use real-time data related to maternal and child health. The evidence generated from this project will provide a scientific basis for integrating a targeted mobile health (mHealth) strategy to improve education, detection and management of eclampsia and pre-eclampsia. Findings from the study are also expected to support sustainable strategies to scale up the intervention from the eight districts included in the study. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

West and Central African Partn...ership for Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health Research
more
|
High rates of maternal death a...nd teen pregnancy persist in West and Central Africa. Research and programming efforts are not sustainably reducing these rates. The challenge is how to link the evidence on useful health interventions with evidence on how to deliver the interventions effectively. This project aims to build the foundation for delivering better maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health care by addressing this gap and enhancing the capacity of researchers and leaders. Bridging gaps and barriers to better health outcomes A partnership of leading West and Central African health researchers and institutions has designed this project through a series of regional dialogues. The partners will build a bilingual knowledge base for use by research and training institutions to develop academic programs, short courses, and mentoring programs. They will support continuous capacity development through the following activities: -Develop and conduct summer schools for researchers, health officials, journalists, and civil society -Provide small research grants -Design and manage mentoring programs for emerging leaders -Develop a website and a vibrant community of practice Through this process, the partnership aims to bridge the geographic and linguistic divides that fragment efforts across the region. Project partners include: -Ghana Health Service -West African Health Organisation -L'Institut supe¿rieur des sciences de la population -African Media and Malaria Research Network -Universite¿ de Yaounde¿ I -Laboratoire d'e¿tudes et de recherche sur les dynamiques sociales et le de¿veloppement local -College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus Eleven other institutions are members of the partnership. It covers nine Francophone and Anglophone countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Co¿te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal.

West and Central African Partn...ership for Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health Research

This project aims to improve t...he health of mothers, newborns and children under five in order to improve children's growth and reduce death in 14 poor districts in Bangladesh. The corrective actions for each district address shortages and bottlenecks in the public health care system, respond to communication issues, train health service providers and expand cold storage to accommodate the introduction of new vaccines. The project activities are integrated in the Operational Plans of the Health Population and Nutrition Sector Development Program of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The project empowers families and women with knowledge about available services and the standard of service they should expect.

|
The project aims to reduce the... incidence of child and maternal mortality in targeted countries through maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE). Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) is a deadly disease that affects women and children in developing countries. When women give birth in unhygienic circumstances, both mother and baby are at risk of contracting tetanus if they are not protected by vaccination. With DFATD's support, UNICEF Canada is providing tetanus vaccine to at least 3,401,448 women of reproductive age and their future newborns in Pakistan, Sudan, Chad, Kenya and South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) distributing vaccines and supplies for supplemental immunization activities; (2) strengthening of the cold chain to transport vaccines and supplies; (3) promoting clean delivery practices, routine immunization and antenatal care; (4) developing and implementing national plans of action, training and support for health workers; and (5) strengthening surveillance of MNTE to monitor and evaluate progress.

The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations.

COMMUNITY-BASED CAUSE OF DEATH... STUDY LINKED TO MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM AND VITAL STATISTICS IN ETHIOPIA (IMCHA)

Community-Based Cause of Death... Study Linked to Maternal and Child Health Program and Vital Statistics in Ethiopia (IMCHA)
more
|
While Ethiopia has successfull...y reduced under-five childhood mortality, there have been slower gains in reducing neonatal (newborn) and maternal mortality rates. About 220,000 children and mothers die every year in Ethiopia. For most, the causes of death are unknown as fewer than 30% of Ethiopia's births and deaths are registered. The lack of information makes evidence-based decision-making difficult. As part of national efforts to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics, the goal of this project is to overcome the maternal, newborn, and child health 'Know-Do Gap' in Ethiopia by piloting a low-cost, high-quality cause-of-death (COD) data collection and monitoring system at the national level. This will enable the development of scalable solutions to address critical gaps in maternal and child mortality that can influence local, national, and global efforts. This project aims to generate a national open-source catalogue for COD data from 1990 onward. It will also pilot a 'Global Resource to Accelerate Accurate Death Estimation and Evaluation (GRADE)' platform to decrease the cost, while increasing the quality and feasibility, of COD surveys. This project will increase the quality of local evidence to help guide Ethiopian priorities by building awareness of causes of maternal, childhood, and neonatal deaths. It will also contribute to emerging evidence at the global level under the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Systems. This is part of Canada's contribution to the work being undertaken through the Global Financing Facility focusing on the challenges facing many high burden countries to improve maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. The project will provide Ethiopia with its first-ever representative data on the causes of neonatal and maternal deaths, which will serve to better identify gaps in health services for mothers and children. The evidence will link causes of death to maternal and child health outcomes, which can be used to inform future policy. This will help Ethiopia to achieve its commitment to reduce preventable deaths by 40% by 2030, as proposed by the new UN Sustainable Development Goals. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative (2014-2020), a seven-year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

This project is implemented in... 9 Districts of the Northern and Upper West Regions of Ghana. The goal is to contribute to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity by making easily understandable maternal health information accessible to expectant and new mothers in an interactive setting, using Information Communications Technology (ICT). More than half of infant deaths in Ghana happen within the first month of life. A serious lack of health facilities and poor access to health services in northern Ghana contributes to the high regional maternal mortality rate. Project activities include: (1) introducing an interactive charting process and other participatory approaches so that women have a voice in their own care, (2) mitigating both direct and indirect causes of maternal death, (3) addressing the poor general health of women, high-risk reproductive characteristics and barriers to preventive health care, and (4) address newborn survival in rural, remote areas with targeted messages and interventions. The principal beneficiaries of the project include 30,000 pregnant women and mothers, 30,000 partners, 15,000 infant girls and 15,000 infant boys. Salasan Consulting is working with a Canadian partner, Mustimuhw Information Solutions, to implement the project in Ghana with a local health development firm, Savana Signatures.

Priority: promote Sexual and r...eproductive health and rightsThis project will increase the capacity of Haiti's National Statistical Institution to plan and implement the 5th General Population and Housing Census, and subsequently, to analyze, publicize and strategically use demographical and social statistics. 30% of the project is coded as population policy and administrative management, which is included in SRHR coding. Reliable census data will allow the Government of Haiti, stakeholders and donors, to develop evidence-based policies, strategies and programmes. Special efforts have been made to ensure the census process is gender sensitive and a 'Women in Haiti' thematic report will be produced, contributing to a better capacity to address gender equality issues in Haiti./Priority: promote Sexual and reproductive health and rightsCanada's support of $8 million would help to increase the capacity of Haiti's National Statistical Institution (IHSI) to plan and implement the 5th General Population and Housing Census, and subsequently, to analyze, publicize and strategically use up-to-date socioeconomic and demographic data. Special efforts have been made to ensure the census process is gender sensitive. From the census results, IHSI will produce thematic reports that will systematically include gender analysis of the topics covered; in particular, there will be a 'Women in Haiti' report produced that will provide an overview of the situation of girls and women in the country in terms of social, demographic and economic characteristics. Reliable census data will contribute to a better capacity to address gender equality issues in Haiti.
