ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF THE M...IDWIFERY WORKFORCE IN TETE PROVINCE (MOZAMBIQUE)
more
|
Enhancing the quality of the m...idwifery workforce in Tete province (Mozambique)
more
|
General description: In the p...roposed program, UNFPA intends to assist in strengthening the institutional capacity of the Tete Training School (ICS) in order to ensure an adequate level of skills and an appropriate and enabling working environment; to eventually scale up the availability of a qualified midwifery workforce in Tete province. The program has a twofold approach, one focusing on the long-term strengthening of institutional capacity and the second aiming towards immediate capacity development of the competencies of maternal and child health nurses and medicine technician students. -- The Cuban model of medical education has been recognized worldwide as an effective approach, based on the rapid expansion of the healthcare workforce in partner countries responding to a crisis, such as Ebola, combined with a rigorous accreditation system. . UNFPA will facilitate the South-South cooperation between the two Ministries of Health (MoH), Cuba and Mozambique, to increase the availability of a quality midwifery workforce. The proposed model will be built on the existing Agreement of Corporation in the area of Health between the Ministry of Health in Mozambique and the Ministry of Public Health in the Republic of Cuba. At present, 221 Cuban doctors are working in Mozambique'. 179 doctors are deployed at health facilities providing medical care and the rest are working in universities and public health institutions. -- Additionally, the proposed program aims to respond to the Human Resources Plan (2016-20), which has a key objective to enhance the quality of the training capacities across the country. -- Hence, the proposed program aims to primarily contribute to the strengthening of the institutional capacity of the Tete Training School (ICS) in the long term through technical assistance from Cuba, post-graduation of specialized nurses from Tete and upgrading the learning environment, which aims to establish a quality midwifery training institution. The second approach is 2) the immediate capacity development of the competencies of maternal and child health nurses and medicine technician students, as a short term intervention to respond to the current gaps. -- General ObjectiveTo reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in Tete Province by accelerating the availability of a quality midwifery workforce. -- Specific ObjectiveEstablish a more cost-effective approach to strengthen the quality of the Tete nursing school. -- Specific purpose : ? Result 1: Enhanced technical skills of teaching schools in Tete Province. -- ? Result 2: Strengthened competencies of Maternal and Child Health nurses and Medical Technician students. -- --

Realizing younger adolescents'... sexual and reproductive rights in Maputo province
more
|
General description: The goal... of this project is to improve adolescent reproductive and sexual health and rights, through reducing teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortions, new HIV and STI infections, and gender-based violence, and shifting harmful social norms and policies, through the following specific objectives: -- -- Objective 1: Increase positive communication between adolescents and key adults on adolescent SRHR in the context of local social norms, in 6 communities in 2 districts -- Objective 2: Strengthened provision of accessible and appropriate SRH services for adolescents in 2 districts of Maputo province -- Objective 3: Improved understanding at national and provincial level of the needs of younger adolescents and of strategies, policies and practice that are responsive to these needs. -- -- The project will complement existing ASRH programmes in Mozambique through focussing on areas less well developed including younger adolescents, employing strategies designed to reach out-of-school and rural adolescents, with sustainable approaches. -- -- ICRH will complement this through strengthening provision of services for adolescents, in health facilities, schools and communities, with a focus on improving commnication between providers and adolescents, in a way that recognises the socio-cultural context within which their sexuality develops and plays out. -- -- Specific purpose : Result 1.1: Families and communities actively supporting adolescents to maintain reproductive and sexual health and rights, and aware of the impact of harmful social norms such as early marriage and GBV. -- Result 1.2: Primary and Secondary school teachers actively promoting activities in schools to support adolescents to maintain reproductive and sexual health and rights, and to challenge harmful social norms. -- Result 2.1: Increased availability of SRHR services targeting adolescents and young people in 2 districts -- Result 2.2: Health professionals aware of SRHR needs and challenges of adolescents, in particular younger adolescents, and equipped with skills needed in order to provide dignified, quality services -- Result 3.1: Production of evidence that highlights adolescents' SRH issues and effective approaches to address them -- Result 3.2: Advocacy to strengthen evidence-based ASRH policy and practice in health and other sectors -- --

ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF THE M...IDWIFERY WORKFORCE IN TETE PROVINCE (MOZAMBIQUE)

Enhancing the quality of the m...idwifery workforce in Tete province (Mozambique)
more
|
Background: In the proposed pr...ogram, UNFPA intends to assist in strengthening the institutional capacity of the Tete Training School (ICS) in order to ensure an adequate level of skills and an appropriate and enabling working environment; to eventually scale up the availability of a qualified midwifery workforce in Tete province. -- Specific purpose: ? Result 1: Enhanced technical skills of teaching schools in Tete Province. -- ? Result 2: Strengthened competencies of Maternal and Child Health nurses and Medical Technician students. --

This volunteer sending program... supports 537 volunteer placements which contribute to the development objectives of 39 developing-country organizations in collaboration with 26 Canadian organizations. These placements (or assignments/exchanges) and partnerships strengthen the capacity of partner organizations from developing countries to achieve development results through the sharing of skills and knowledge related to program delivery, organizational management, and engagement in policy dialogue. Canadian Crossroads International (CCI) is focusing on three areas of development, all within a gender equality framework: (1) women s rights through increased political representation and reduced violence against women; (2) poverty reduction through increased access to resources and a stronger social economy; and (3) improved access to preventative care and treatment of HIV/AIDS and reduction of discrimination and stigma associated with this disease. An amount of $80,622 has been added to the total amount for each of the Volunteer Cooperation Agency programs for CIDA-led program evaluations. / Ce programme d envoi de volontaires soutient 537 échanges de bénévoles qui contribuent aux objectifs de développement de 39 organisations des pays en développement en collaboration avec 26 organisations canadiennes. The project contributes to imp...roving maternal, newborn and child health, protecting children and preventing sexual and gender-based violence by supporting the production and nationwide broadcast of radio serial dramas. These dramas provide information, tools and resources to stimulate social change, raise the awareness and improve the overall health and well-being of the audience. The dramas use characters and settings that reflect people's daily lives and current impressions of health and social issues. Produced in the most commonly spoken languages in the Democratic Republic of Congo, these dramas use the country's most economical and far-reaching mass media mechanism. The project promotes positive behavioural changes related to themes such as: immunization for all children and pregnant women; improving child nutrition; the proper use of treated bed nets to prevent malaria; child spacing and delaying marriage and onset of childbearing to promote the health of mothers; birth registration; and positive behaviours for both women and men with regard to gender equality and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Special Issue of The Lancet on... Sexual and Reproductive Rights and Health Beyond 2015
more
|
This project will support the ...production of a special issue of The Lancet on sexual and reproductive rights and health. The Lancet is the world's leading general medical journal and also publishes four monthly specialty journals in the fields of oncology, neurology, respiratory medicine, and infectious diseases. The special issue will feature research, policy, and program information to support evidence-based dialogue and debates among countries, donors, civil society, and the United Nations. More specifically, the special issue will:-consolidate data, policy, and program experience on sexual and reproductive rights and health;-weigh possible approaches to emerging health and human rights issues, and sustainable development goals; and,-identify gaps and emerging issues, and agree on sustainable development priorities, including equitable access to health services for disadvantaged populations. This edition of The Lancet will include six to nine scientific articles and a series of commentaries to highlight regional or other perspectives on the research topics. Three experts in the field of sexual and reproductive rights and health will coordinate the publication. This will ensure a variety of perspectives from a diverse group of researchers. This group will consist of emerging and renowned population scientists, policymakers, and social activists from low- and middle-income countries. This special issue will be disseminated at high-profile events related to the 20th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development and the post-2015 development framework. The project's coordinators are heavily involved in national, regional, and international processes and events shaping the sexual and reproductive rights and health agenda. They will use these networks and events to highlight the evidence base and the value it provides to discussions and debates in the post-2015 development framework negotiations.

STRENGTHENING GOVERNANCE IN HE...ALTH SYSTEMS FOR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS IN PAKISTAN
more
|
Strengthening Governance in He...alth Systems for Reproductive Health and Rights in Pakistan
more
|
Pakistan, with the world's six...th largest population, is part of a region that is notorious for its social and gender inequities. As a low-income country, its population has faced numerous economic challenges, especially in the last two decades. These economic hardships have magnified the country's underlying social and gender inequities. Social sectors, including health, are generally the first to suffer under economic woes. Over the past decade, the country's security situation has also spiralled downwards. As a result, Pakistan's health system has suffered and health service delivery has worsened. Those most affected are the vulnerable social groups, including the poor and women. Services catering to women's needs are grossly inadequate. Weaknesses in the Ministry of Health, especially those related to governance, also affect services for women, especially those associated to sexual and reproductive health. This four-year project aims to strengthen health systems governance for reproductive health and rights in Pakistan. The research team will use a three-pronged intervention model to enhance rights by ensuring accountability for government and service providers. Shirkat Gah, the Women's Resource Centre, will lead the project, which aims to build skills and knowledge in the planning and implementation sections of Pakistan's Ministry of Population Welfare, Ministry of Health, and civil society organizations. Using a case study design, the research team will assess the model's viability as a tool to strengthen health systems governance for reproductive health and rights. The project team will also generate tools and recommendations to apply the model in other countries in South Asia. Researchers will conduct the study at the district level with two districts selected in each of the two main provinces of Punjab and Sindh, and one district in each of the two smaller regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. Project outputs include piloted tools and training modules to: -assess health systems governance for sexual and reproductive health; -evaluate health systems governance for community accountability mechanisms; -generate rights-based evidence; and, -transfer knowledge to civil society organizations.

EXPLORING DISRESPECT AND ABUSE... SUFFERED BY WOMEN ATTENDING HEALTH FACILITIES IN MAJOR URBAN CENTRES IN SENEGAL
more
|
Exploring Disrespect and Abuse... Suffered by Women Attending Health Facilities in Major Urban Centres in Senegal
more
|
Maternal health is a global pr...iority, and Senegal has made some policy efforts to improve services (for instance, by providing subsidies for maternal health care). Nonetheless, maternal morbidity and mortality rates remain high. One of the key obstacles to improving maternal health among Senegalese women has been the attitude of healthcare workers: there is growing evidence of disrespect and abuse by health workers toward women seeking to obtain health care and reproductive health services. This project will support the Senegal office of the Population Council, an NGO working on reproductive health, to generate evidence about these problems. Researchers will carry out a literature review and will conduct an initial small study in two urban clinics to provide concrete evidence of issues. Publication of the results, together with dialogue with stakeholders from community to national levels, will build a foundation for follow-up research and action. These activities are expected to improve the governance of women s reproductive health services in Senegal and increase women s use of public health centres.

MOVING MATERNAL, NEWBORN AND C...HILD HEALTH EVIDENCE INTO POLICY IN WEST AFRICA

Moving Maternal, Newborn and C...hild Health Evidence into Policy in West Africa
more
|
This project catalyzes and ena...bles the uptake of research evidence to improve maternal and child health into policy and practice at the national and regional level in West Africa, specifically targeting Ghana, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal. It is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. While health systems research has informed improvements in maternal, newborn and child health globally, there are critical knowledge and implementation gaps in West Africa. As such, preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths, illnesses and disabilities continue to burden countries in the region. There is a strong commitment from West African governments, the international community and Canada to improve maternal newborn and child health. The West African Health Organisation (WAHO) will work with implementation research teams to be selected in a separate call, to provide evidence for regional and national decision makers. This will complement the implementation research teams efforts to integrate the evidence they generate into policies and practices. WAHO will foster the uptake of research in policies and practices, by building decision makers understanding of research and promoting more collaboration with researchers. Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa is a research program that seeks to assist countries in resolving pressing health systems challenges to improve maternal, newborn and child health. It is designed to support two separate but interrelated components: (1) two independent policy organizations/consortia- referred to as Health Policy and Research Organizations (HPROs), and (2) approximately 20 Implementation Research Teams (IRTs). This project supports the West African Health Organisation to be the Health Policy Research Organization in West Africa. WAHO will leverage evidence generated by the Implementation Research Teams, as well as other researchers in its policy advisory work. The program is a collaboration between Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Canada s International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

The project aims to reduce the... number of mothers and newborn babies who die in South Sudan by providing women with greater access to high-quality midwifery services. The project consists primarily of training midwives, nurses, and other health workers at four National Health Training Institutes across the country. It includes developing a midwifery program at these training institutes, improving the training facilities, obtaining the equipment required, and improving the ability of the faculty members and administrative staff at the training institutes to teach and manage the new midwifery program. The project also works to improve the ability of the Ministry of Health to manage and regulate the education of midwives. A total of 540 health workers are expected to graduate during the project, including 315 midwives. More than 20,000 babies are expected to be born in the hands of a midwife or midwifery student over the course of the project. This project is part of Canada s maternal, newborn, and child health commitment. / Le projet vise à réduire le nombre de décès chez les mères et les nouveau-nés au Soudan du Sud en offrant aux femmes un meilleur accès à des services de soins de haute qualité prodigués par des sages-femmes. COMMUNITY-BASED CAUSE OF DEATH... STUDY LINKED TO MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM AND VITAL STATISTICS IN ETHIOPIA (IMCHA)

Community-Based Cause of Death... Study Linked to Maternal and Child Health Program and Vital Statistics in Ethiopia (IMCHA)
more
|
While Ethiopia has successfull...y reduced under-five childhood mortality, there have been slower gains in reducing neonatal (newborn) and maternal mortality rates. About 220,000 children and mothers die every year in Ethiopia. For most, the causes of death are unknown as fewer than 30% of Ethiopia's births and deaths are registered. The lack of information makes evidence-based decision-making difficult. As part of national efforts to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics, the goal of this project is to overcome the maternal, newborn, and child health 'Know-Do Gap' in Ethiopia by piloting a low-cost, high-quality cause-of-death (COD) data collection and monitoring system at the national level. This will enable the development of scalable solutions to address critical gaps in maternal and child mortality that can influence local, national, and global efforts. This project aims to generate a national open-source catalogue for COD data from 1990 onward. It will also pilot a 'Global Resource to Accelerate Accurate Death Estimation and Evaluation (GRADE)' platform to decrease the cost, while increasing the quality and feasibility, of COD surveys. This project will increase the quality of local evidence to help guide Ethiopian priorities by building awareness of causes of maternal, childhood, and neonatal deaths. It will also contribute to emerging evidence at the global level under the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Systems. This is part of Canada's contribution to the work being undertaken through the Global Financing Facility focusing on the challenges facing many high burden countries to improve maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. The project will provide Ethiopia with its first-ever representative data on the causes of neonatal and maternal deaths, which will serve to better identify gaps in health services for mothers and children. The evidence will link causes of death to maternal and child health outcomes, which can be used to inform future policy. This will help Ethiopia to achieve its commitment to reduce preventable deaths by 40% by 2030, as proposed by the new UN Sustainable Development Goals. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative (2014-2020), a seven-year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

Faced with one of the highest ...maternal mortality rates in the world, Nigeria has identified maternal and child health as a priority issue. This project will help address the problem through research that assesses the reception, cost, and impact of home visits. It will also examine how video 'edutainment' (educational entertainment) and other tools can influence maternal and infant outcomes.Women at riskWomen at highest risk in Nigeria are those who are least able to attend health facilities to receive conventional antenatal care during pregnancy. Typically, they are socially isolated, overworked, impoverished, subjected to gender violence, and poorly educated.Community action and education have a central role to play in ensuring that mothers and their infants have access to health care. Pilot project for better outcomesThis project will test and implement universal home visits that address these gaps across pilot sites in Nigeria as a strategy to improve maternal and child health. The methodology involves a large-scale cluster randomized controlled trial to measure the impact of strategies for implementing home visits and video education tools (video edutainment) within the country's health services. The project team will engage government officials to maximize opportunities to integrate home visits into health services for pregnant women and their spouses in randomly selected wards of the Toro Local Government Authority. The goal is to scale up these approaches at the national level. The project will offer a better understanding of how home visits and video education during pregnancy can influence health outcomes. It will generate evidence to support large-scale trials to improve survival rates for pregnant women and new mothers in Nigeria.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

SCALING UP CARE FOR PERINATAL ...DEPRESSION FOR IMPROVED MATERNAL AND INFANT HEALTH IN NIGERIA (IMCHA)

Scaling Up Care for Perinatal ...Depression for Improved Maternal and Infant Health in Nigeria (IMCHA)
more
|
Even though effective treatmen...ts are available, perinatal depression often goes untreated, especially in low- and middle-income countries where there are shortages of mental health specialist resources. This project aims to address that challenge by demonstrating how community midwives who are trained to work in resource-constrained settings can deliver effective interventions for depression among new mothers.Community treatments for depression The World Health Organization (WHO) produced the Mental Health Gap Action Programme Intervention Guide to help non-specialists recognize and treat select mental health conditions, including perinatal depression. The project team will test the guide's effectiveness in providing support to mothers with perinatal depression at the community level. Using a participatory research approach, researchers will implement training for community midwives in Osun State, Nigeria. The training aims to enhance their skills so they can identify and support women with perinatal depression. The research will also identify organizational factors that can support the scaling up of mental health services in Nigeria. The project will help generate knowledge on the training methods that can equip midwives with skills to deliver care for perinatal depression. The findings will help strengthen efforts in other low- and middle-income countries to develop relevant strategies and programs to address perinatal depression.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
