Though Tajikistan has ratified... the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination agains Women (CEDAW) women still face widespread discrimination and inequality in social economic and political life. Gender-based violence is prevalent with as many as 1 in 2 married women having experienced emotional physical or sexual violence by their husbands. Domestic violence is often considered as commonplace and something that should not be discussed outside the family. A survey found out that 97 % of men and 72 % of women believe that a voman must tolerate violence to keep her family together.

Adressing informal sector sexu...al and gender based violence: core support for the implimantation of 2019-2022 strategic plan

The support will contribute to... Equality for Growth overall objective which seek to empower Tanzania?s informal sector women. Informal sector women experience GBV in their daily operations and they have limited access to justice GBV remains a chronic problem facing women and girls in Tanzania?s informal sector. The Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey 2015-2016 indicates that about 2 out of 5 women aged 15-49 experience physical violence and 17% of them experience sexual violence. In markets of Dar es Salaam 40% of female traders experience sexual harassment 33% are verbally abused and 24% experience other forms of violence from male traders and customers2. Unfortunately women?s access to justice is limited due to low understanding of the law legal procedures and high costs of filling pursuing cases as well as engaging advocates. The National plan of Action to end Violence against Women and Children in Tanzania (NPA-VAWC) of 2017/18 ? 2012/22 was launched in 2016 by the government of the United Republic of Tanzania but its enforcement is very low and operationalization still lags behind. The funds will contribute to the achievement of the following specific results of their 2019- 2022 strategic plan: Outcome 1.1 Informal sector women operate in safe cities and public spaces and the working environment space that is freed from GBV/VAWG and other insecurities so they are able to exercise their human and economic rights to the fullest. Output 1.1.1: Local authorities market leaders and law enforcers possess improved knowledge and skills related to handling GBV/VAWG incidences and other safety related issues. Output 1.1.2: Increased knowledge and assertiveness of informal sector women to end GBV/VAWG and they take action to address safety issues. Output 1.1.3: Tailored community based legal work is promoted to facilitate operations of informal sector women. Outcome 1.2: Informal sector actors such as LGAs the media and local organisations are empowered to effectively address gender related policy barriers affecting women. Output 1.2.1: Improved knowledge and skills of policy implementers on policies relevant to the informal sector. Output 1.2.2: Best informal sector models (including EfG models) are shared and/or adopted by LGAs institutions and local organisations nationally and where relevant internationally. The Equality for Growth is the implementing agent of the programme.

The Women in Law and Developme...nt in Africa (WiLDAF) is a non-profit making organization which was established and incorporated under the Companies Ordinance Cap 212 of the Laws of Tanzania in 1997. WiLDAF is a Pan-African women?s right network dedicated to promote and strengthen strategies that link law and development. The essence is to increase women?s participation and influence at the community national regional and international levels in order to enhance the protection and promotion of their rightsViolence against Women and Children (VAWC) is still prevalent in the country. This is due to the issue of power imbalances and social norms which are embedded in Tanzania communities. Likewise the lack of comprehensive law sufficient protection and rehabilitation services for VAWC survivors perpetuate the incidences. Human trafficking of women and children is also a challenge and the government is yet to fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of human trafficking. The right to access to justice in Tanzania is still a challenge particularly to women due to the existence of gender discriminative laws, cultural norms and costs associated with reporting and prosecution of GBV/VAC cases, inadequate financial resources, human resources, and infrastructure. Majority of Tanzanians do not have legal capacity to represent themselves in the court of law and the cost to hiring advocates is expensiveThe fund will contribute to the following Key Result Area of their strategic plan 2016-2022: 1: Increased accessibility to justice for Women Girls Children in particular victims of violence, Enactment of gender responsive policies and laws in Tanzania, Reduction of incidences of Violence against Women and Children in the targeted Tanzanian communities Strengthened the institutional capacity for proper coordination and management of organizational undertakings. WiLDAF is the main the implementing agent of the programme other actors are its members

Sexual and gender-based violen...ce are severe problems inTimor Leste which is recovering from a long-term conflict. Of those women that have experienced violence in their marriages 77 per cent report that the violence has been severe. Also the attitudes towards the violence are harmful. Approximately 80 per cent of women and men think that a husband has a right to physically punish his partner under certain conditions. Likewise punishment of children is common place.Plan works with local communities to change harmful attitudes and ending violence. Our voluntary youth discuss these harmful habits related to violence and gender-based violence particularly among adolescents. We aim to ensure that authorities recognise gender-based violence and have the capacities to interfere. Plan also improves the chance of women to get referred to shelters in Dili from the countryside.

WOMEN IN THE NEWSROOM - TOWARD...S GENDER EQUALITY IN MEDIA AND JOURNALISM IN NEPAL AND TANZANIA
more
|
Women in the Newsroom - Toward...s Gender Equality in Media and Journalism in Nepal and Tanzania
more
|
During the first project phase... a research exploring women?s status in media in Nepal and Tanzania clearly revealed that achieving gender equality in media sector requires structural changes in newsrooms. These changes are now targeted by influencing media managers and gatekeepers (e.g. managing editors) and by enhancing gender equality through in-house training in media houses. Research also revealed that women journalists widely face gender discrimination and sexual harassment at work. During this project women are provided with knowledge and tools for handling discrimination and harassment they may face. Activities also include influencing employers and organizing male-only training for journalists.Women?s salaries are also lower and they have reduced career development opportunities. During this project women journalists are provided with mentoring and training in topical fields of journalism and management skills. Attitudes are changed through campaigning and media education.Gender inequality on media sector also affects media content. Men are dominating the news agenda as media managers journalists and sources. Hence strengthening the status of women in newsrooms has extensive social significance, gender equality in media will lead into more diverse and equal reporting. Expected outcomes, 1) Women in the newsrooms have the required professional skills and confidence for journalistic work 2) Women in the newsrooms and journalism schools have the knowledge and skills to act against gender discrimination and sexual harassment and journalism is seen as a suitable career choice for women 3) Media houses are providing training for their staff and are using gender policy and reporting system as tools for gender equality 4) Gatekeepers? see female journalists as capable and divide tasks equally 5) Civil society promoting freedom of press and information has the capacity to successfully advocate for a gender-sensitive pluralistic media and gender equality for women journalists.Project partners are Media Council Tanzania Women's Media Association and Media Institute of Southern Africa in Tanzania and Center for Investigative Journalism in Nepal.

PREVENTING SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGA...INST YOUTH IN INDIA

Preventing sexual violence aga...inst youth in India

India has been successful in c...ombating poverty in recent years but the fruits of development have not been distributed evenly. The burden of poverty weighs down heavier on girls and women. Gender inequality is visible not only in income and participation but also in high rates of gender-based violence (GBV). Sexual violence is both a consequence and cause of gender inequality ? normalized gender inequality makes sexual violence more likely and sexual violence inhibits the safe participation of girls and women in society and public life further exacerbating inequality. Research indicates that sexual violence can be reduced through addressing counterproductive gender norms. The project will use an ecological model with a Gender Transformative Approach (GTA) through a peer education process to address sexual violence and to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of the young people in the age group of 15?24 years. The project will be implemented in the urban slum of Nihal Vihar in Delhi and the rural district of Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh. The rural and urban project activities will inform programmatic evidence for addressing sexual violence on a larger scale by the public sector. The planned project activities include: ? Study to identify prevalent biased gender norms causing gender-based discrimination and sexual violence. ? Development of training module and tools. ? Stakeholder analysis to identify actors that can influence addressing sexual violence at community and system levels. ? Identification of peer leaders and change agents amongst the stakeholders for orientation sensitization and capacity building. ? Organizing structured capacity building programme for all identified stakeholders at different levels within ecosystem. ? Strengthening existing spaces within the ecosystem that has been constituted by various departments for empowering adolescent and young population at school level health care level and community level. ? Mentoring existing functionaries of the ecosystem to organize behavior change activities. ? Sharing the evidence using various platform under south ?south cooperation to support developing countries.

LOCALIZING KENYA NATIONAL ACTI...ON PLAN IN MANDERA SAMBURU AND BARINGO COUNTIES TO END DOUBLE MARGINALIZATION OF WOMEN IN PEACE AND SECURITY

|
Localizing Kenya National Acti...on Plan in Mandera Samburu and Baringo counties to end double marginalization of women in peace and security
more
|
The project will endeavour to ...bring women to the mainstream of peace and security efforts in Mandera Samburu and Baringo counties. These are Arid and Semi-Arid Lands counties that are categorized as suffering historical marginalization and constantly suffer periodic breakdown in law and order as well as unending conflicts caused by competition over livelihood resources. Women suffer double marginalization from the historical circumstances as well as from men whose patriarchal beliefs and behaviour lead them to treat women as inferior to them. The impact of this behaviour is increased sexual and gender based violence even when there is no active conflict and extreme suffering from both intensification of SGBV during conflict but also displacement and destitution. The project seeks to catalyse women?s collective potential to boost their agency to advocate for protection and realization of their rights even during active conflict. It also seeks to increase women?s participation in leadership of the peace and decision making processes as envisioned in the UN 1325 and KNAP 2. The project shall seek to: strengthen the role of women in peace security and governance, and to Promote protection of women and girls from violence abuse and exploitation. The two-year project aims to catalyse the involvement of women through the dissemination of the 2nd generation Kenya National Action Plan (NAP) to the targeted counties in a simplified and contextualized version and facilitate elaboration of an action plan that shall be implemented jointly with the critical stakeholders. The main target of the project is grassroots women and girls and will enhance equity by ensuring inclusion of women in decision-making at all levels. Men shall be targeted as elders and Morans within existing traditional authorities to understand the objectives of KNAP and actively support women to participate equitably with men. Men shall also be targeted as leaders in the county and national governments as well as within religious organizations. The project shall promote dialogue and data collection and documentation through consultative forums with women leaders to contextualize and prioritize the local issues such as on relief conflict and reconstruction.

|
UNDP administered (in co-ordin...ation with UN Women and UNICEF) support for devolution in Kenya. The aim of the programme is to develop and deepen the results of the constitution mandated devolution process in the 17 focus counties of the programme. The outcomes of the programme are: Outcome 1 - by 2022 people in Kenya access high quality services at a devolved level that are well coordinated integrated transparent equitably resourced and accountable. Outcome 2 - by 2022 marginalized and vulnerable people have increased access to and utilize social protection and services for prevention and response to gender-based violence and violence against children. Outcome 3 - by 2022 individuals and communities in Kenya have reduced exposure to risks and are more resilient to disasters and emergencies.Finland has earlier supported the World Bank?s Kenya Accountable Devolution Programme?s Fund (2 million euro 2015-2017). KADP achieved good results eg. the Treasury?s capacity to channel and monitor funds to counties has been strengthened as well as the counties accountability in budgeting. Through technical support new tools have been adopted to support open and inclusive budgeting which has produced concrete results and investments in services at the county level. Finland also supported the German development agency GIZ?s good governance and anti-corruption project (2015-2016) and through it the capabilities of the anti-corruption actors. The joint UN programme will run from 2019 to 2022 and utilize a budget of USD 43.8M implemented by all three Agencies working jointly towards all outcomes and with UNDP as the Administrative Agent.

Bajhang is one of the least de...veloped districts of Nepal where almost 50 % of people live below poverty line and suffer from food insecurity. Agricultural productivity is low due to lack of technical knowledge and unavailability of quality inputs and irrigation facilities. There are natural resources available but due to limited knowhow and poor market access people are not able to use them for livelihood improvement purpose. In the patriarchal communities women suffer from gender dicsrimination and violence and are excluded from decision-making.The objective of this project is to uplift the livelihoods and food security of the socially and economically marginalized communities of Masta Rural Municipality through improved farming practices value addition and better access to markets empower women through capacity development and leadership trainings and build more resilient communities through sustainable animal husbandry and natural resource management and developing NTFP-based livelihood opportunities. The project implemented by Sahara Nepal and supported by Swallows supports Finland's development objectives by increasing food security and promoting sustainable use of natural resources and enhancing the rights and status of women and girls. The project will strengthen local partner organization's capacity and role in community capacity building and establishing linkages between communities and local government. The project is expected to benefit directly around 300 poor households. At least half of the beneficiaries will be women.

The project's aim is to reduce... female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) through enhanced public policy and alternative livelihoods opportunities for women and girls, changing community perception on FGM/C and improving reporting, prevention of FGM/C as well as improving the care of FGM/C victims. FGM/C is nearly universal in Somalia with 98% of women reporting to have experienced such practice. 46 % of girls between the ages of 0 to 14 years have experienced FGM/C as reported by their mothers. According to the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2006, the highest FGM prevalence is among women aged 15-49 is in South Central at 99.2%, Somaliland at 94.4% and Puntland at 98.1%.The Somali have a close cultural value around virginity and marriageability. Type III FGM (infibulation) is performed to ensure sexual purity and chastity. The project will raise awareness and create correct understading amongt community members, elders and leader on FGM/C through workshops and campaigns. EMPOWER CONFLICT RELATED SEXUA...L VIOLENCE TRAUMA SURVIVORS IN DAMASCUS SYRIA

Empower Conflict Related Sexua...l Violence Trauma Survivors in Damascus Syria
more
|
The project aims to empower yo...ung women who are suffering from Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Trauma in Damascus. This is done by improving access to needed services including MHPSS medical care livelihood and economic assistance. The intention is to help them to overcome the trauma and move on with the psycho-social help. The project has both psychological aspects as well as vocational training and cash-off type material support. The purpose is to give the beneficiaries tools to improve their livelihood e.g. via small-scale businesses. The beneficiaries who are the sole breadwinners of their family and have little children are selected from Rural Damascus are. The center for the activities is in the middle of the old Damascus. During the training and support sessions the children have their day-care program in the same compound. While SGBV is underreported in this region due to cultural and social stigma there are many documented cases of women and girls being raped by government forces and Organized Armed Groups (OAGs) other combatants during home raids while in detention and even on the streets. Sexual exploitation has also increased dramatically due to declining economic conditions whereby the HNO Overview 2019 highlights that 45 % of assessed communities identify early marriage as a way to ease the stress of not only family economic decline but as a way to protect their daughters. The deteriorating socio-economic situation has left many women and girls particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation. With few economic opportunities available many are forced to engage in survival sex and/or serial marriages to support their families. Many women are forced to assume the role of the head of the household. The positive impact of the project is optimized by assuring that activities are complemented with interventions that aim to empower the beneficiaries especially women and girls. For example integrating a vocational training program and cash assistance will protect the GBV survivors and those at risk from having to integrate into the same environment where all the social and economic circumstances lead her to become a victim once more.

Children with Children - initi...atives for adolescent girls in Tanzania
more
|
The Children with Children pro...ject is designed to improve the wellbeing and rights of vulnerable adolescent girls and mothers in Tanzania. Its interventions are based on learnings from the ongoing MFA funded Women?s Empowerment and Child Rights project in Mufindi (2017-2020) and subsequent studies such as a community gender audit needs assessment and stakeholder analysis. Despite efforts made by the Government of Tanzania to address adolescent girls? inequality challenges still abound. These include school dropouts early pregnancies and inequal access to education. This project focus is to empower adolescent girls and mothers who are a growing cohort in Tanzania by addressing root causes of gender inequality gender based violence poverty and lack of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHRs) knowledge and services. The project interventions are comprehensive and designed to address adolescent girls and mothers? challenges at national community and individual levels. The project key results areas include contextual policy level changes and regional dissemination of policies on the rights of adolescent girls and mothers. Other key results areas are awareness of access to and utilization of Sexual Reproductive Health services to adolescent girls and mothers and boys the socioeconomic empowerment of vulnerable adolescent mothers as well as the strengthening of local systems and community structures? response to Violence against Children (VAC) and Gender Based Violence (GBV). Multiple tested and context specific implementation strategies will be applied that include advocacy and lobbying empowerment community campaigns and awareness raising school and community based workshops trainings and peer to peer support. The project is implemented as a partnership between the applicant and SOS Children?s Villages Tanzania. It will work in close collaboration with local partners - local government authorities service providers and education authorities.

Plan International Finland has... two MFA funded operations in 2018. In Ethiopia the goal is to facilitate the treatment of both severe and moderate acute malnutrition in four woredas that suffer from renewed drought and decrease the mortality and morbidity due to malnutrition and support local child protection committees to track and identify children separated from their families due to the drought and eventually reunify them with their families. In Nigeria the operation will target conflict-affected early learning aged children (aged 3-6) to benefit from early childhood development (ECD) in four local government areas in Borno state. The main goal is to improve the readiness for school and psychosocial support available to 700 early learners and to improve the capacity of ECD caregivers to provide age-appropriate and quality the services in the ECD centers. MFA funding for these operations is 1 000 000 euros in 2018.

COMMUNITY-BASED STRATEGIES FOR... SUSTAINABLE NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND GENDER EQUALITY IN MONZE AND MAZABUKA
more
|
Community-based strategies for... sustainable natural resource management and gender equality in Monze and Mazabuka
more
|
Objective of the project is to... resolve challenges identified by Zambian rural communities as hindering their development. Climate change causes prolonged periods of drought having an impact on the livelihoods and food security of the communities. In addition use of charcoal as the most significant energy source has led to accelerated deforestation which contributes to climate change and environmental degradation. Need to burn wood further creates a challenge for developing sustainable livelihoods and forestation. The scarcity of water available has an impact on the livelihoods such as agriculture forestry and livestock. Lack of water has reduced the communities' interest to invest in these livelihoods. The beneficiaries of the project are 500 households in Monze and Mazabuka southern Zambia. The long-term development objective is to improve environmental and living conditions as well as livelihoods in a sustainable equal and climate-friendly manner. Project aims to achieve this by promoting the use of renewable energy sustainable livelihoods forestation and by improving water security. Project strongly emphasizes the agency of women and educates on gender equality as women are often in charge of both household duties and income generation and are specially vulnerable to the risks of climate change.A community-based approach will be adopted as most effective means of empowering the community to manage its own natural resources and develop its livelihoods. In addition capacity-building and institutional economic and environmental development ensure the sustainability. Active participation of local stakeholders and the beneficiary communities will be ensured throughout the project.Education and sustainable management of natural resources as well as the use of water resources and renewable energy will ensure the viability of community livelihoods in the long run. Project provides communities with solar power stoves. Access to water is improved with boreholes and the communities are trained on the themes of the project. Hence they can improve their livelihoods agricultural productivity and manage their natural resources in a sustainable manner.
