THE GENDERED SOCIALIZATION OF ...VERY YOUNG ADOLESCENTS IN SCHOOLS AND SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
more
|
The gendered socialization of ...very young adolescents in schools and sexual and reproductive health
more
|
Adolescents in sub-Saharan Afr...ica, particularly those in low-income urban settlements, are at significant risk of poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Most interventions aimed at improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health have focused on older adolescents, often neglecting very young adolescents, aged 10-14 years, whose emerging sexuality can determine future sexual and reproductive health and well-being. This project seeks to better understand how the youngest adolescents learn about the social expectations, roles, and attitudes associated with their gender socialization in the school environment, and how these aspects relate to sexual and reproductive health. It will generate information on what evidence-based and low-cost interventions are effective to change norms and advance early adolescents' sexual and reproductive health at scale. The project will also facilitate the broader uptake of approaches by schools, adolescents, and communities to enable them to challenge gender inequities, eliminate negative gender stereotypes, foster positive gender norms, and facilitate the exercise of SRH rights. To achieve these objectives, the research team will apply a participatory mixed-methods research design that will integrate community engagement with school administrators and teachers, adolescents, parents, community leaders, and policymakers. The key outputs from the project will include a range of written reports (manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, fact sheets/briefing papers, etc.) and visual outputs. The project's results will be shared through meetings with stakeholders, institutions' websites, social media, and exhibitions. Anonymous data collected during the project will be made publicly available two years after the completion of this project. This is a multi-country project that will be conducted in Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Nigeria. The collaborating partners are Université de Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), the African Population and Health Research Centre (Kenya), and Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria). This project represents one of nine selected as a cohort of implementation research projects spanning two regions (West Africa and the Middle East) and two thematic topics (adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems). It is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new Feminist International Assistance Policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

ADDRESSING UNMET NEED FOR CONT...RACEPTIVES AMONG ADOLESCENTS USING COMMUNITY-EMBEDDED INTERVENTION

Addressing unmet need for cont...raceptives among adolescents using community-embedded intervention
more
|
The shortfall in contraception... and sexual reproductive health services in Nigeria, particularly for adolescents, is resulting in high pregnancy rates. Prevailing social attitudes and practices at the individual, community, school, and health facility levels often present major barriers to adolescents seeking services. This project aims to increase access to needed contraceptive services by adolescents in Nigeria's Ebonyi State. Specifically, the project is expected to strengthen the ability of adolescents to make reproductive health choices and of healthcare providers to give sexual reproductive health services to adolescents. An innovative, community-embedded approach will support adolescents and key adult members of their communities to develop initiatives that improve communication and strengthen relationships within families, with teachers and health service providers, and across communities. This will create an environment conducive to improving adolescent sexual reproductive health. Led by the Health Policy Research Group at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus, the project will be implemented in six representative urban and rural local government areas across the state.Decision-makers have prioritized the improvement of adolescent sexual reproductive health services, and the evidence from this project will inform scale-up dialogue and efforts across the state and beyond.

This initiative aims to improv...e the health and nutrition status of poor and vulnerable mothers, newborns and children in select regions by working with local health authorities. It directly addresses malnutrition in the first 1000 days of children's lives in targeted districts and informs national nutrition policies in the targeted countries. Malnutrition is the cause of over 3 million child deaths annually and results in non-communicable conditions, such as stunting, wasting and anemia, as well as poor motor, cognitive and social development. The project is being implemented in Bangladesh (Thakurgaon District), Myanmar (Thabaung Township), Kenya (Elgeyo Marakwet county) and Tanzania (Singida and Shinyanga Regions). The effects of malnutrition in these countries are significant with serious social and economic implications. Such conditions are especially pronounced in rural regions, such as those targeted by the project. The project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.64 million individuals, including more than 674,000 women, 553,000 children and 418,000 men, and indirectly reach an estimated 2.1 million individuals who are not targeted by the project but who benefit from the strengthened health system and improved health services. Policy changes in nutrition and wider application of existing policies as a result of the project advocacy efforts also have a positive impact on indirect beneficiaries. The sexual and reproductive health component of this project will directly benefit 1,284,533 people, including 549,182 women of reproductive age and 93,430 children under two years of age. Other direct beneficiaries include 309,728 adolescents (10-19 year old girls and boys), 332,194 adult men, and 2,148 service providers at facility and community levels. In addition, the initiative's activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 3 million Canadians. Project activities include: (1) recruiting, training and equipping community healthcare workers to promote and provide basic health services; (2) training local health councils in improved data collection, analysis and reporting to inform planning and delivery of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services; (3) raising awareness of primary caretakers on key nutritional practices, including dietary diversity; (4) providing inputs and training in the development of home gardens; (5) training of peer-based networks/care groups on malnutrition prevention and sexual and reproductive health rights issues (i.e. family planning, early forced child marriage, sexual gender-based violence; (6) informing and increasing community participation in policy dialogue with governments on MNCH and sexual and reproductive health and rights; and, (7) implementing interactive media and linking Canadians with empowered youth in a mentorship program to improve the knowledge and ability of Canadians to engage in international MNCH, nutrition, sexual and

Family planning is critical to... advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality. Among development actors, UNFPA Supplies is the largest provider of contraceptives in the world, and is pivotal to the achievement of the Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) goal of enabling 120 million more women and girls to have access to contraceptives by 2020. Canada's support to UNFPA Supplies contributes to increasing the availability of contraceptives in 46 countries through contraceptive planning and procurement while strengthening contraceptive supply chains to ensure these commodities reach the poorest and most vulnerable.

ENHANCING COMMUNITY HEALTH WOR...KERS SUPPORT FOR MATERNAL, ADOLESCENT AND NEWBORN HEALTH PROJECT PLUS CONTRACEPTION IN RURAL TANZANIA (IMCHA)
more
|
Enhancing community health wor...kers support for maternal, adolescent and newborn health project plus contraception in rural Tanzania (IMCHA)
more
|
Access to the means of prevent...ing unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions is critical for averting maternal and newborn deaths and disease. One out of every five Tanzanians is an adolescent, and by the age of 19, half of all girls are pregnant or have already given birth to a child. While contraceptive use by adolescents has increased, less than one in every six adolescents uses contraceptive methods. There are severe limitations in access to family planning services in rural Tanzania, particularly in the districts surrounding Lake Victoria. This project, a collaboration between the Bruyère Research Institute and Shirati KMT Council Designated Hospital, will complement a current project to build an enhanced cadre of community health workers in rural Tanzania by integrating a focus on the reproductive health needs of women. The project will train community health workers (CHWs) to educate adolescents and women about family planning options, including safe sexual behaviors, and help improve access to family planning services using mobile health applications. Nurses will be trained to work with these CHWs to provide enhanced family planning methods and prevent stock shortages by using m-health stock monitoring of family planning items.A mixed methods approach will be used to measure the effectiveness and impact of the interventions under this project. Quantitative measurements of contraceptive use (from baseline and post-intervention) will be undertaken using m-health measures of stock levels and work flows of CHWs. Qualitative data from focus group discussions with women, CHWs, and nurses, as well as participatory research activities with policymakers, will ensure a better understanding of the cultural aspects of reproductive health and needs from women and adolescents. Involvement of regional and district medical officers in planning and regular engagement of policymakers at local, regional, and national levels will increase awareness and integration of knowledge in policy and programming. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The initiative aims to address... several development needs and challenges all linked to underlying poverty and lack of basic services in the remote rural areas in the Ramechap district in Nepal, in the Azabache and Nacaome areas in Honduras and in the Gourma province in Burkina Faso. The overall objective of the initiative is to improve the health of mothers and young children, and thus contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality, through assistance with village and household-scale infrastructure, parent health education and enhanced nutrition and food security. World Neighbours Canada aims to develop and implement training programs for women and men to learn about family planning options, to increase food crop production using sustainable and ecologically sound practices, to promote proper nutrition in infants and young children under two years of age that includes breast feeding promotion, developing and implementing water system plans with participation of users etc. The project proposes to benefit more than 50,000 women, men, girls and boys. World Neigbours Canada is working with Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti (TSS) in Nepal, L'Association d'Appui à la Promotion du Développement Durable des Communautés (APDC) in Burkina Faso, and Vecinos Honduras, in Honduras to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's commitment to maternal, newborn and child health programming.

In light of persistently high ...levels of maternal mortality and unmet need for family planning, and prevalent harmful practices (including female genital mutilation and child marriage), the Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Indonesia project, in partnership with UNFPA and UNICEF, aims to transform sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and young people in Indonesia by addressing key gaps in the quality of birth attendants, access to comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly services for young people, and advocacy and community-based programming for the prevention of gender-based violence and harmful practices using the male involvement approach (focusing on child marriage and female genital mutilation).
