AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly.Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya./ Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions.

This pilot project aims to con...tribute to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in four districts of the Kayes region. It supports the Government of Mali with the implementation of its Health and Social Development Plan (PRODESS), specifically to improve Maternal and Neonatal Health. The project is designed to complete the integrated community-level health system thereby strengthening the referral and evacuation plan, including the transport of pregnant women from villages to community health centres. The project comprises two complementary components: The first component takes the form of direct financial support to the four selected district authorities through the Regional Health Directorate. It aims to make new resources available for upgrading or building new health units, ensuring key services are available (e.g. emergency obstetric care, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS), having appropriate transportation in place, and ensuring availability and quality of qualified personnel, medicines and medical supplies. The second component is providing technical assistance by a Canadian support agency to assist the four districts with the implementation of their operational plans. It aims to help the local communities to get organized in order to set up in their villages a system to effectively reduce the delay in getting women in labour to the health centre. This component also contributes to strengthening the capacity of the local structures to plan and manage human and financial resources as well as to monitoring results.Part of the resources of this pilot project are being dedicated for the analysis of the results and the development and implementation of a results-dissemination strategy designed to inform the possible scaling up of this initiative.

Family planning is critical to... advancing gender equality and adolescents' empowerment. Among development actors, UNFPA Supplies is the largest provider of contraceptives in the world and is pivotal to the achievement of the Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) goal of enabling 120 million more women and girls to have access to contraceptives by 2020. Canada's support to UNFPA Supplies contributes to increasing the availability and use of contraceptives by adolescents in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali. Project activities include: (1) supporting advocacy with governments for the inclusion of emergency contraception among an integrated package of reproductive health commodities available in-country; (2) improving adolescent and youth access to reproductive health services and information, including family planning and contraceptives, with a focus on humanitarian and fragile settings; and (3) strengthening capacity and systems for supply chain management to ensure availability of high-quality reproductive health supplies for adolescents and youth./La planification familiale est cruciale pour faire progresser l'égalité des sexes et le renforcement économique des adolescentes.

This project strongly supports... the Ministerial commitment of contributing $650M over three years in support of SRHR initiatives and the Ministerial priority of empowering women and girls. It will advance access to and use of sexual and reproductive health services to women, adolescents, and newborns within the national health program, including comprehensive family planning services (including contraception, abortion and post-abortion care) and HIV/AIDS and STI prevention and management.

PENDING REVISION BY PROJECT BR...OWSER TEAMThe Project aims to reduce the incidence of early pregnancy in Nicaragua by strengthening the country's integrated approach to adolescent development. Nicaragua has one of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates in Latin America with approximately 24% of girls 15-19 having been pregnant at least once. Gender based violence, deeply rooted traditional practices and the lack of comprehensive education on sexual and reproductive health, adolescent-friendly health services and economic opportunities all contribute to high early pregnancy rates.Project activities include (1) providing education and health services for sexual and reproductive health; (2) vocational training for pregnant adolescent girls and mothers; (3) protection for adolescent girl victims of sexual violence; (4) promoting healthy lifestyles and life skills for adolescents; (5) strengthening institutional capacities of four participating ministries, and (6) improving inter-institutional coordination between the Ministries. The Project is coordinated by the Ministry of the Family Adolescents and Children, jointly implemented with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Youth. Participation of these four ministries facilitates reaching a broad range of adolescents, parents, teachers and community leaders./To come

This project aims to deliver l...ife-saving basic health care, with an emphasis on maternal, neonatal and child health, to people living in six of South Sudan's ten states. The project seeks to establish and strengthen health care facilities, including local clinics and formal hospitals in 40 (of 79) counties to reach an estimated 4.2 million people, particularly women and children. The project also works to strengthen government systems so that South Sudan's government can eventually take over responsibility for providing quality primary health care to its population. The project provides technical assistance to the ministries of health at the national, state and county level to strengthen their ability to effectively oversee and supervise health services. Project activities include: (1) providing almost 1.4 million children with basic health and nutrition services; (2) providing over 120,000 women with prenatal care and protection from malaria; (3) immunizing over 250,000 children against common diseases; (4) ensuring that over 60,000 pregnant women deliver their babies with the support of a skilled birth attendant; and (5) supporting 15 county hospitals with emergency obstetrics care. This project is a partnership between major donors of the health sector in South Sudan, led by the United Kingdom's Department for International Development. This project is also part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. Enhancing community health wor...kers support for maternal, adolescent and newborn health project plus contraception in rural Tanzania (IMCHA)
more
|
Access to the means of prevent...ing unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions is critical for averting maternal and newborn deaths and disease. One out of every five Tanzanians is an adolescent, and by the age of 19, half of all girls are pregnant or have already given birth to a child. While contraceptive use by adolescents has increased, less than one in every six adolescents uses contraceptive methods. There are severe limitations in access to family planning services in rural Tanzania, particularly in the districts surrounding Lake Victoria. This project, a collaboration between the Bruyère Research Institute and Shirati KMT Council Designated Hospital, will complement a current project to build an enhanced cadre of community health workers in rural Tanzania by integrating a focus on the reproductive health needs of women. The project will train community health workers (CHWs) to educate adolescents and women about family planning options, including safe sexual behaviors, and help improve access to family planning services using mobile health applications. Nurses will be trained to work with these CHWs to provide enhanced family planning methods and prevent stock shortages by using m-health stock monitoring of family planning items.A mixed methods approach will be used to measure the effectiveness and impact of the interventions under this project. Quantitative measurements of contraceptive use (from baseline and post-intervention) will be undertaken using m-health measures of stock levels and work flows of CHWs. Qualitative data from focus group discussions with women, CHWs, and nurses, as well as participatory research activities with policymakers, will ensure a better understanding of the cultural aspects of reproductive health and needs from women and adolescents. Involvement of regional and district medical officers in planning and regular engagement of policymakers at local, regional, and national levels will increase awareness and integration of knowledge in policy and programming. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

This project, in partnership w...ith Tanzania's Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, and local government authorities, is supporting the achievement of results of the Government of Tanzania's National Road Map Strategic Plan to Accelerate the Reduction of Preventable Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths in Tanzania (2016 – 2020); a sub-strategy of Tanzania's Fourth Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSPIV).This initiative emphasizes the delivery of essential health services at the district level, strengthening the health system referral pyramid, from community to national level; improving central support systems (including infrastructure, health management information systems, essential medicines and commodities, and information communications technology); addressing human resources for health shortage and distribution; improving the level, appropriateness and sustainability of health care financing; and promoting public private partnership. The implementation of the National Road Map Strategic Plan to Accelerate the Reduction of Preventable Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths in Tanzania is focused on improving the management and delivery of primary health care services to improve maternal, newborn and child health.Canada is one of several donors supporting the Government of Tanzania's pooled fund for the health sector to improve governance and to strengthen the health system performance. Since 2006, Canada has been working in close collaboration with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to focus on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increase donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthen mutual accountability.

The Uzazi Uzima II project see...ks to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in all five districts of Simiyu region, Tanzania. This goal is achieved by improving the availability of quality maternal and newborn health services in underserved districts; and increasing the utilization of maternal and newborn health services by women and their families in targeted districts through the use of low-cost high-impact interventions. The project uses an integrated approach that builds the capacity of female and male health workers to deliver comprehensive maternal and newborn health, family planning and nutrition services. Project activities include: (1) training health workers from four health centres and 24 dispensaries on: essential maternal and newborn health skills, such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC), family planning; nutrition counselling; and newborn resuscitation; (2) refurbishing four health centres and 24 dispensaries to provide CEmONC, BEmONC, water, sanitation and hygiene and family planning services, including a satellite safe blood center at the regional hospital; (3) equipping targeted health facilities with the necessary stocks of equipment and commodities to provide BEmONC, CEmONC, family planning and safe blood services; (4) establishing a referral system for maternal and newborn health care and family planning services across all tiers of the health system; (5) training and supporting Ministry of Health and facility-based managers, and health workers to improve community to facility linkages (enhanced data collection, consolidation, analysis and reporting); and (6) training and equipping community health workers, traditional birth attendants, traditional healers, and local leaders to provide community-level health promotion services (including maternal and newborn health, water, sanitation and hygiene, family planning, nutrition, gender issues and use of mobile health technology to mobilize communities). The project is implemented in collaboration with Amref Health Africa in Tanzania, Marie Stopes and Deloitte. This joint initiative, UNICEF-...UNFPA, will help reduce deaths of girls, women and infants by promoting and improving sexual and reproductive health services and rights and access to related information services. It will particularly focus on increasing effective coverage of key sexual and reproductive health services and rights including maternal newborn child health services in low performing districts. It will address gaps and weakness of local government service delivery capacity, geography and culture to reduce preventable deaths amongst women and infants. The overall goal of the proposed initiative is to contribute and accelerate the existing efforts of the government of Bangladesh in promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights of the population, especially among women and adolescents, including efforts to improve maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health./ Cette initiative conjointe, UNICEF et FNUAP, contribuera à réduire les décès de filles, de femmes et de nourrissons en promouvant et en améliorant les services et les droits en matière de santé sexuelle et génésique ainsi que l'accès aux services d'information connexes.
