RATAS: NETWORK AGAINST GENDER ...BASED VIOLENCE IN THE GAMBIA

RaTas: Network Against Gender ...Based Violence in The Gambia
more
|
The ?Desk Review on GBV in The... Gambia? report revealed that the health system does not have formal protocols or procedures for caring for survivors of gender-based violence. It is not clear how far health providers are trained on the proper procedures for responding to GBV ranging from the provision of privacy and confidentiality to the collection of forensic evidence the conducting of safety plans and the referral of survivors to other services such as legal aid or counseling. Interviews with few nurses during the desk review indicated that when a woman goes to a hospital or health center for GBV-related injuries health providers do little more than treat the physical effects of violence usually only in the most extreme cases when survivors do attend health centers. STRENGTHENING DOTS STRATEGY IN... LARGE URBAN CENTERS WITH HIGH TUBERCULOSIS BURDEN IN BRAZIL

Strengthening DOTS Strategy in... Large Urban Centers with High Tuberculosis Burden in Brazil
more
|
Brazil has the highest TB prev...alence in Latin America and, together with Peru, is responsible for 50 percent of all cases in the region. Although Brazil is an upper-middle income economy, it ranks 16th among the 22 countries with the highest TB burden in the world. The program supported by this grant aims to reduce TB-related illness and death, as well as further transmission of the disease in ten metropolitan regions and in Manaus. This program is focusing on four objectives, being: (1) to strengthen the DOTS strategy for early diagnosis and timely treatment among vulnerable populations in ten metropolitan areas and in Manaus; (2) to strengthen social mobilization, behavior change communication, and information, education, communication activities in ten metropolitan areas and in Manaus; (3) to strengthen the laboratories network in ten metropolitan areas and in Manaus by improving quality guarantee and the laboratory information system; and (4) to strengthen actions aimed at reducing TB/HIV based on the HIV/AIDS program experiences in ten metropolitan areas and in Manaus. This grant focuses on objectives 3 and 4. The program targets interventions for at-risk populations, including people deprived of their freedom and those who are homeless. Activities related to strengthening the social response to TB are carried out largely through civil society organizations. The program seeks to ensure timely TB detection and quality treatment by improving the current information system and by training health workers from HIV and TB programs in ten metropolitan and Manaus areas in treatment for co-infections.

AMPATH PLUS will be a new phase in which the Moi University, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and the Ministry of Health facilities work together to improve the health of our catchment area in Kenya. In this new phase, not only will we seek to find, link, treat, and retain all HIV-infected people within our catchment area, but we will also dramatically increase our primary care and chronic disease management services. more
|
Provide humanitarian assistanc...e to communities in central Myanmar through technical assistance and resources to address critical needs in maternal and child health; livelihoods; food security; and water, sanitation, and hygiene.
more
|
3 components constituted the p...rogramme and 1 out of these 3 is health relevant: Maternal and Child Health (MCH) – Shae Thot’s approach to improving MCH includes community-based actions and mobile clinical services and strengthening health systems. Volunteer health workers called “Change Agents” are trained in safe pregnancy, diagnosing and treating common illnesses of under-5 children including pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria, and facilitating emergency referral. They are linked to Mothers’ Groups, networks of mothers who meet weekly to learn about and discuss MCH-related illnesses, hygiene, and nutrition. The Village Development Funds provide immediate access to financial resources for health emergencies – addressing a common barrier to vital MCH care services. Shae Thot’s health system strengthening approach complements community-based action through supporting continuous medical education sessions for midwives, training of auxiliary midwives, and deploying mobile clinics to targeted villages on a regular basis to offer a range of maternal and child health services.
Livelihoods and Food Security – Household-level food insecurity is widespread in Myanmar as a result of frequent drought, uneven rainfall patterns, and landlessness due to internal displacement. Shae Thot takes a dual approach towards improving livelihoods and food security that includes expanded access to financial services and improved agriculture services. Credit provision services – both institutional and savings-group models – are combined with microenterprise training to promote income generation. The program supports improved agriculture production through technical education and support for sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural practices, knowledge-sharing activities, and providing quality agriculture and livestock inputs.
Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene (WASH) — Shae Thot’s WASH activities are conducted through building community members’ hands-on skills in order to develop local expertise. The project trains local carpenters, masons, and artisans to create low-cost, low-technology solutions for providing or constructing bio-sand filters, ceramic water filters deep-tube wells, hand-dug wells, small dams, sanitation for community schools, or other types of water and sanitation infrastructure. Community grants are a central element of the WASH strategy, enabling communities and groups to develop joint plans for infrastructure projects. “Four Clean” hygiene and Community Lead Total Sanitation (CLTS) trainings for community volunteers and school teachers promote sustainable behavior change across the community.
