Accelerating Saving Lives at B...irth (SL@B)
more
|
Accelerating Saving Lives at B...irth (SL@B) is an accelerator program that seeks to increase the scale, sustainability, and effectiveness of promising innovations in the Saving Lives at Birth Portfolio - with the overarching goal of improving maternal and newborn health (MNH) outcomes across the globe. Accelerating SL@B innovators strive to first identify and fill gaps left by health systems, working to improve health outcomes that occur before and in the 48 hours after birth, the period when the majority of maternal and newborn deaths occur. The Accelerating SL@B program seeks to help these innovations reach scale through ongoing, individualized coaching and mentoring provided by a team of experts in the innovation and global health spheres. All of the support activities for Accelerating SL@B participants aim to help innovators make progress toward achieving scalability and sustainability. Direct innovator support includes: Coaching from program implementers and other experts in the field of MNH innovation, Tools and resources (i.e. tools that help identify target audience for communication and to develop commercialization plans), In-person events, including one annual workshop and one annual showcase, and Virtual support activities (i.e. webinars and peer community groups).

Sustaining Technical and Analy...tic Resources (STAR)
more
|
STAR improves the effectivenes...s of global health programs worldwide by developing and strengthening the capacity of global health professionals by placing fellows and interns in external institutions, primarily in USAID-supported countries, and in USAID in partnership with academic and other institutions. STAR strengthens the technical and analytic professional cadre of human resources for global health by partnering with organizations of higher learning, development research, and/or health professional associations. Leveraging the expertise, resources, and partnerships of academic institutions and many other types of organizations, STAR contributes to strengthening institutions in developing countries that provide technical leadership and improve systems that promote technical collaboration across the global health community. STAR strengthens the pool of health professionals globally through field experience with developing country organizations, provides opportunities to diverse health professionals who mirror the populations USAID serves globally to build their skills and gain exposure to international health programs, and improves collaborative systems and long-term, sustainable partnerships for open exchange and utilization of information, knowledge, and educational resources to promote technical excellence and learning.

Accelerating Support to Advanc...ed Local Partners (ASAP)
more
|
Accelerating Support to Advanc...e Local Partners (ASAP) ensures local organizations and government partners have the capabilities and resources to serve as prime partners for USAID/PEPFAR. Objectives include: 1. Strengthen local partners as they transition to receive PEPFAR funding as a USAID prime partner, ensuring they comply with regulations, and 2. Prepare local partners to directly manage, implement, and monitor PEPFAR programs, and maintain consistent PEPFAR program achievement and quality. ASAP can support local NGOs and government partners through capacity and risk assessments (NUPAS and G2G Risk Assessments), capacity development plans, embedded technical assistance to strengthen new and existing government and local NGOs partners, and organizational capacity and reporting training and courses for local partners.

DEVELOPING ACUTE CARE AND EMER...GENCY REFERRAL SYSTEMS(ACERS)
more
|
Developing Acute Care and Emer...gency Referral Systems(ACERS)
more
|
The Developing Acute Care and ...Emergency Referral Systems Project assesses the added value of a program of implementation research, action, and capacity building to timely care-seeking behavior and effective referrals to improve maternal and neonatal care in two regions of Ghana. Project efforts build off the Three Delay Model, with a focus on the second and third delay for obstetric and neonatal emergencies. Ghana continues to experience high maternal and neonatal mortality rates despite a well-organized, decentralized system of health care. Additionally, the lack of policies and guidelines for comprehensive care at the district level have resulted in emergency care and referral initiatives that are not well-coordinated and have unknown efficacy and impact. The ACERS project will augment the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) platform with activities around acute care and emergency referral systems from the community to the district level, seeking to prove that separate components of care can be assembled into a sustainable single system with scale-up capabilities. ACERS will be woven into the fabric of Ghana s regional, district, and community health system structures to ensure the implementation of a sustainable and scalable model. This implementation research effort, co-managed and co-financed by USAID Ghana, supports the Government of Ghana s vision of improved service delivery and progress towards self-reliance.

New Partnerships Initiative (N...PI) EXPAND (New Partners for Better Health) is a five-year (2019-2024), $43.9 million global project with the goal of working with missions and organizations to increase the availability and utilization of quality health services across all USAID priority health areas. NPI EXPAND will catalyze opportunities to scale up innovative interventions by strengthening the capacity of New and Underutilized Partners (NUP) with varying levels of capabilities and exposure to USAID. In line with the Journey to Self-Reliance, NPI EXPAND will support countries to identify and strengthen local organizations to participate fully in their local health system. New Partnerships Initiative will increase USAID s development impact by elevating local leadership, fostering creativity and innovation, and mobilizing resources across the Agency s programs. 1. Strengthen the organizational sustainability of new and underutilized local entities or locally established partners: Targeted countries will advance their self-reliance through a strengthened cadre of NUPs that are ready to meet the needs of the underserved. The activity will support NUPs to increase their managerial, financial, and administrative capacities to enhance their ability to not only receive direct support from USAID but also be more engaged partners within local health systems. 2. Expand utilization of high-quality, high-impact health services, information and supplies expanded: Participating NUPs will contribute to enhancing the supply and utilization of high-quality, integrated health services, with a focus on reaching underserved populations. NPI EXPAND supports this evolution by fostering the technical skills of providers, the expansion of services offered, quality assurance systems, and introducing cost-effective demand creation techniques that can be integrated in the service delivery setting. 3. MATERNAL AND CHILD SURVIVAL PR...OGRAM (MCSP - FORMERLY RMNCH)
more
|
Maternal and Child Survival Pr...ogram (MCSP - formerly RMNCH)
more
|
The United States Agency for I...nternational Developments (USAID) Bureau for Global Healths flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) focuses on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The Program is introducing and supporting high-impact, sustainable reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) interventions in partnership with ministries of health and other partners. MCSP places a greater emphasis on key cross-cutting issues such as innovation, e/mHealth, equity, quality, gender, public-private partnerships and involvement of civil society, community approaches, health systems strengthening, and behavior change interventions. While maintaining a focus on technical, high-impact interventions, the Program works toward sustainable scale-up to include the health systems that deliver these interventions. In addition to contributing to high-level technical and policy dialogue at the global level, the Program provides tailored technical assistance to help countries meet specific priorities and contextual needs of local RMNCH programs.

Peace Corps Ending Preventable... Child and Maternal Deaths (EPCMD) IAA
more

Funds will be used to support ...small grants that Peace Corps volunteers can access to implement malaria, maternal and child health and family planning-related projects, including supporting education and communication activities that promote family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH), birth spacing, antenatal care, and treatment-seeking, and promoting community activities to expand access to contraceptives and FP services. The Interagency Agreement (IAA) with Peace Corps allows USAID to access technical assistance from Peace Corps, recognizing the unique and meaningful contribution Volunteers make in remote locations all over the world. The overarching goal of the partnership is to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality. It is centered on the promotion of key accelerator behaviors selected because they have low uptake yet profoundly impact a major cause of child and/or maternal mortality. In order to achieve progress toward this goal, Peace Corps and USAID have identified collaborative opportunities and mechanisms that can be leveraged to support and strengthen in-country projects and activities, specifically around individual and community behavior change interventions for newborn, child and maternal health..

The purpose of the Accelerate ...Task Order is to enhance USAIDs ability to carry out effective, evidence-based behavior change programming in the highestpriority health areas that affect the main causes of preventable child and maternal mortality in EPCMD priority countries. Task Order 2's overarching Strategic Objective is to identify, apply and diffuse new evidence-based behavior change practices and interventions. Task Order 2 is not to develop and test new social and behavior changes methods and approaches but rather to identify and apply innovative and existing social and behavior change methods and approaches, which may be new to USAID and/or the field of international health, resulting in notably improved health impact and measurement.

Medicines, Technologies, and P...harmaceutical Services (MTaPS)
more
|
The goal of MTaPS is to enable... low- and middle-income countries to strengthen their pharmaceutical systems to ensure sustainable access to and appropriate use of safe, effective, quality-assured, and affordable essential medical products and medicines-related pharmaceutical services. The purpose of MTaPS is to provide pharmaceutical system strengthening assistance for sustained improvements in health system performance, and to advance USAID s goals of Preventing Child and Maternal Deaths, Controlling the HIV/AIDS Epidemic, and Combatting Infectious Disease Threats, as well as expanding essential health coverage. MTaPS works to strengthen essential areas of the pharmaceutical sector, including regulatory capacity, supply chain management, pharmaceutical financing and services, and pharmaceutical management information systems. Within this context, MTaPS addresses USG priority health elements including malaria, HIV/AIDS, family planning and reproductive health, tuberculosis, maternal and child health, neglected tropical diseases, and the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA). MTaPS focuses on enhancing pharmaceutical services through patient-centered solutions while continuing to support essential supply chain functions and medical products supply security. The MTaPS result areas address the five health systems components (governance, human resources, information, financing, and service delivery) as they pertain to pharmaceutical management, informing the design of potential interventions to ensure that they respond to health element and cross-cutting concerns in support of health system strengthening.

The Kampala Slum Maternal Newb...orn Project: Innovating for Better Health Outcomes
more
|
The project, along with leader...ship from the Kampala Capital City Authority, will test an innovative package of interventions to address real-world demand and supply-side barriers affecting care-seeking, effective referrals and provision of care for women and newborns in two of Kampala s poorest areas, Makindye and Rubaga. The project will address barriers to better MNH outcomes among the urban poor within a complex health care delivery system, and will provide insights on ensuring sustainability through mobilizing local resources (public and private). Project objectives: Empower poor pregnant women in urban areas to be able to recognize illness and make timely decisions to seek care for themselves and their babies. Ensure that quality maternal and newborn care is accessible by harnessing and collaborating with available private providers. Improve referral linkages and ensure emergency transport between primary care private facilities and referral hospitals

Knowledge SUCCESS
|
Knowledge SUCCESS (Strengtheni...ng Use, Capacity, Collaboration, Exchange, Synthesis, and Sharing) is a five-year (2019-2024), $35 million global project funded by USAID s Office for Population and Reproductive Health. Knowledge SUCCESS champions the use of knowledge management, or the process of collecting and curating knowledge and connecting people to it so they can act effectively, within the global family planning and reproductive health community. The project serves a wide range of audiences, however, the main audience is family planning implementers those professionals who are responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating family planning programs and services and the project's mandate is to meet their knowledge needs: by making critical, high-quality information available and accessible, by enabling routine, meaningful sharing of knowledge, and by building lasting capacity for collaboration, learning, and adaptation. The project is led by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) in partnership with Amref Health Africa, The Busara Center for Behavioral Economics, and FHI 360. Our team combines extensive knowledge management and family planning expertise with emerging behavioral science approaches and a global and regional reach. Knowledge SUCCESS builds on the legacy of USAID s Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project and its popular products and services.

Kuboresha Afya Mitaani: Urban ...MNCH Project
more
|
Kuboresha Afya Mitaani project... (KAM), also known as the Urban MNCH Project, is using implementation research to better understand and improve maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) outcomes for women and children living in the informal settlements of Kawangware and Mathare North in Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to strengthening approaches that will increase demand generation and delivery of quality MNCH services, KAM will also explore ways to improve the linkages between facilities and the city's regulatory system to improve high-quality, live-saving services in both public and private health facilities. The project will explore a 'quality ecosystem' model to improve health in the informal settlements by integrating typically siloed actors in the quality of care space in Nairobi, including women and families, communities, facilities, health providers, health regulators and actors in WASH and air pollution. This work is not only intended to improve outcomes for almost 60,000 of Nairobi s most vulnerable women and children, but it will also use real-time learning to plan and catalyze a sustainable approach across Kenya s largest city, working in partnership with key public and private sector stakeholders that can inform efforts in other African urban contexts. It will provide a template for African cities to understand how to build successful programs to address the unique challenges of MNCH in informal settlements.
