F.A: DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL PROD...UCER ORGANIZATIONS IN NICARAGUA
more
F.a: Development of small prod...ucer organizations in Nicaragua
more
Coffee is Nicaragua's most imp...ortant export product and provides employment for more than 300.000 people each year, corresponding to more than half of the agricultural sector jobs. Rainfall fluctuation and potential temperature increase brought about by climate change threatens the whole industry in many areas. Epidemic rust disease throughout Central America has done serious damage in Nicaragua as well. Increased humidity, old age of coffee bushes and lack of know-how in the treatment of the bushes has influenced the spread of the disease. During the project's planning phase in 2014, the coffee producers identified as their major problems - besides climate change and the rust disease - producer organizations' low administrative capacity, poor productivity, weak of quality assurance, financial difficulties and uncertain sales channels. The goal of the project in Nicaragua is to improve livelihood of small coffee producers. The project's purpose is to develop the country's coffee producers' organizations to be more efficient and productive. The project will develop the administrative capacity of producer organizations through training on cooperative principles. Productivity and quality of coffee farming will be improved by establishment of coffee nurseries, producing organic fertilizers and by training especially youth on sustainable farming practices. Quality control of the processing of coffee is improved by updating and calibrating tasting areas to standardize quality criteria, and training coffee tasters. Cooperatives sales capacities will be strengthened by training cooperatives on market knowledge, risk management and logistics, as well as by organizing tasting events. Nicaragua's coffee producers chose 18 weakest coffee cooperatives of a total of 21 Fairtrade coffee cooperatives to take part in the project. Direct beneficiaries of the project are 10.600 coffee producers, of which 27 percent are women. Indirect beneficiaries are seasonal workers involved in the picking and processing of coffee. Implementing partner organizations are Latin American and the Caribbean network of small Fairtrade producers, CLAC, and it's network in Nicaragua, La Coordinadora Nicaragüense de Organizaciones de Pequeños Productores y Productoras de Comercio Justo (CNCJ). http://cncj-nicaragua.com/

F.a: PITA Participatory And In...tegrative Teaching Approach
more
Project provides in-service tr...aining to secondary school teachers working in disadvantaged secondary schools in Meru District Council. Most importantly, the aim is to increase the use of participatory and integrative teaching approach in teaching English, Geography and History. Additionally, themes such as environmental issues, social aspects of the hiv and aids -pandemia and gender equality will be holistically integrated in the mentioned subjects. Teachers' skills will be strengthened both in theoretical knowledge and practical training. Also research articles will be produced. During the recent years, secondary education in Tanzania has been characterised by a growing number of schools and students, and at the same time, by an alarming rate of failure in national Form 4 examinations. In the area of teaching approach, the Ministry of Education of Tanzania has introduced a curriculum change for secondary school subjects, including a shift from teacher-centered to learner-centered participatory approach, which has caused confusion and resistance among the teachers initially trained according to the principles of the traditional teacher-centered approach. PITA Project will be implemented in collaboration between TUMA University Faculty of Education, Meru District Education authorities and selected secondary schools. The project benefits the secondary school teachers and students but on top of that, it offers the academic programmes an opportunity to test and apply participatory and integrative teaching methods in practical grass root level teaching and to develop the teacher training programmes to meet the requirements and challenges of the Tanzanian reality. In 2014 a background survey was conducted and 20 secondary schools with approximately 4.200 students and 120 teachers chosen to the project.

F.a: Kishapu Community Empower...ment Programme
more
The project improves water har...vesting and supply, promotes firewood saving methods, enhances the use of draught resistant crops and tree planting, sanitation and hygiene and creates better livelihood. The project is implemented by using community empowerment methods which improves the capacity of the communities to work for sustainable development in a democratic way. Kishapu area has become a semi-arid region as consequence of climate change and human actions like overgrazing and cutting trees. This has led to unreliable rainfall, low crop production, environmental degradation and malnutrition within the project area. Particularly women and girls have been bound to spend their days in fetching water and firewood. The project looks for environmental friendly, sustainable solutions to adapt to climate change and turn the vicious cycle to opposite direction. An old water supply system has been already renovated to supply water to villages. More public water points are constructed and other actions like sand dams and rain water tanks will be added. Water committees and organizations are trained to sustain the water systems. Communities are trained in hygiene and sanitation, latrines are constructed in order to raise the standard of living and reduce diseases. The project will directly benefit 31.500 inhabitants in 12 project villages. Also the neighboring villages will benefit from the project making the total number of indirect beneficiaries 12.000. The project is implemented by Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service TCRS which implements a large human rights based country program including community empowerment programs and refugee work.

Pader still remains to be one ...of the poorest districts in the country (Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2012 report). Returning to a land which has been deserted for over 20 years possess a number of challenges to the community. Such challenges include food insecurity, low school enrolment and school completion rates, environmental degradation, high prevalence of HIV, lack of access to financial services (credit) and land wrangles over the boundaries that have now been destroyed. The project will use proven approaches of social mobilisation and social inclusion. The aim is to reduce extreme poverty and improve income and food security among vulnerable groups through community mobilisation, agro-based micro-enterprises, skills training and post-harvest training. An approach similar to farmer field schools will be employed to elicit participation and foster technology transfer in a bid to reduce poverty and food insecurity. The main objective:Strengthen farmers' organisations and cooperatives to sustainably serve their membersExpected results:• Increased involvement of farmers' organisations in business-oriented activities along the values chains• Improved farmers' organisations governance and management structures that efficiently and effectively provide services responsive to the needs of their members.• Improved agricultural enabling environment at the local government levelRight-holders/ beneficiariesSmall holder farmers, Farmers groups and associationsThe project is implemented by Lutheran World Federation (LWF). LWF has experience in promoting the LRRD approach and has been operating in this region for past years.

Dien Bien Phu Drainage Wastewa...ter Collection and Treatment ProjectVN
more
The proposed Project will comp...rise rehabilitation and extension of drainage system and sewerage network as well as construction of a 10 000 m3/day biological wastewater treatment plant. The Project aims at improving the living standard of local people by reducing pollution of the environment and flooding in the town. Because of the elimination of many untreated wastewater discharge points the project considerably reduces water pollution. The need for the wastewater treatment plant is imminent and undeniable. The current wastewater system is practically nonexistent. Small combined drainage and sewerage system is mainly located along some of the main roads and due to neglected maintenance and dredging its drainage capacity has been seriously limited. Wastewater from households and other sources is mixed with storm-water and discharged untreated at several points to the Nam Ron River. The project management and implementation is under the Dien Bien People's Committee and the executing agency responsible for the Project is Major Construction Project Unit of Dien Bien Province. Urban Environment Company is responsible of the waste management of the area and thus is the end user of the wastewater system. The Finnish exporter was procured in Vietnam and Econet Ltd was chosen. Dien Bien People's Committee will be responsible of connecting private households to the wastewater system and on this part the Project will only cover the sewer piping.Implementation of the project should take 2 years and the project is funded with the 10-year loan. In addition to the grant portion interest expenses are covered from the Finnish development aid funds.

The Project is an Institutiona...l cooperation between Finnish National Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) and Zambian National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA). The overall approach of the Project is to support ongoing reform processes in the development of contributory social protection in Zambia especially targeting the informal and rural economy workers. The Project is HRBA progressive. Gender equality is a fundamental principle and pragmatic approach in the project design and implementation. THL-NAPSA and ILO providing technical assistance to the project will conclude a MoU.Website of THL: www.thl.fi

F.a: Construction Sector Worki...ng Conditions
more
The project supports the inter...est representation of Mozambican and Namibian construction workers, and in Mozambique also forestry and wood workers, by strengthening union density, widening the collective agreement coverage, improving health and safety and campaigning for more worker-friendly legislation. According to the strategy of Building and Wood Workers' International, the project aims at building (= organizing), defending (=negotiation) and advancing (=influencing). A little under 100 000 people work in construction and wood sectors in the project countries, and their work relationships are mostly unstable project based temporary jobs, where job security in weak and violations of rights in terms of salary payments and other working conditions are common. There are big problems in health and safety both in forestry and construction worksites, and especially Chinese companies are rather negligent when it comes to fair treatment of workers. In the previous project phase these unions have managed to have a good start even among difficult employers, and it makes sense to continue this work. As results there will be stronger membership base and negotiation power, as well as competent and capable shop stewards, OHS representatives and officials to defend interests of members. The beneficiaries are the mentioned 100 000 workers and their unions. The implementer is Building and Wood Workers' International and its affiliate unions in Mozambique and Namibia.

Approximately 50% of the Boliv...ias 11 million inhabitants belong to indigenous peoples. Their societal status, nutrition and health conditions are low. Family violence and violence against women is common and living conditions in rural areas, but also in the metropolitan region of La Paz-El Alto, are difficult. The project advances the social status and living conditions of the indigenous peoples of Bolivia in the Andean highlands through community-based solutions. Expected results are: improved food security through kitchen gardens suitable for the harsh climate and environmental conditions in rural and urban areas. Improved access to clean water in villages by constructing water systems and wells. Womens artisan organization members have better administrative, design, production and marketing skills and they are able to run the organisation and generate income. Project communities as well as decision makers and authorities have increased awareness of womens and childrens rights and the rights are realized better. Domestic and gender-based violence has decreased and women participate in decision making in the community and wider society. Beneficiaries of the project are the indigenous Aymara and Quechua communities on the Andean highlands. Implementing partner is Bolivian Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELB). IELB is the biggest indigenous church in Latin America. It works holistically emphasizing human rights and social justice.

The food and nutrition securit...y assessments conducted in recent years in the Kossi and Sourou provinces indicate that this region is subject to recurring deprivations resulting from adverse climate environment social and economic conditions. The consortium led by Terre des hommes and composed by Save the Children Finland GRET Wupakwe and Salaki proposes a multisectoral response integrating nutrition health food security and governance dimensions to address the key challenges of building resilience in Boucle du Mouhoun. This multisectoral approach will focus on: (1) improving access to basic services for households and vulnerable groups (poorest households pregnant women and children); (2) sustainably improve the productive capacities of households and vulnerable groups and their access to diversified food; and (3) strengthen the capacity of local institutions and communities to ensure good quality of food nutrition and health security services. The proposed action aims to address the root causes of food and nutrition insecurity in Boucle du Mouhoun. The purpose of this approach is to break the chain of intergenerational and multidimensional poverty and chronic food insecurity that affects the most vulnerable communities households and children.Expected results:- Improved access to health water and sanitation services and enhanced knowledge attitudes and practices on the prevention of malnutrition at the target communities' level.-Improved access to food by the poorest households and their increased productive capacity by the establishment of social safety nets and livelihoods support.-Strengthened capacities of local actors in the planning coordination and monitoring of food and nutrition security actions in the risk management and response to disasters.-A model of integrated resilience is documented and disseminated to policy makers and key actors at the local and national level for scaling up.Health nutrition water sanitation and hygiene activities will benefit directly 138692 people and indirectly 495254 people ie a total of 105657 households on the basis of 6 people per household. Disaster risk management and governance support activities will indirectly benefit 37 567 households. In addition direct beneficiaries if livelihood activities are 9611 households and the beneficiaries of social safety nets will be 1600 households.

F.A: COMMUNITY-BASED SUPPORT F...OR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

F.a: Community-based support f...or children with disabilities
more
In Cambodia, children and yout...h with disabilities and their families often live in the margins of their community. Only 3% of disabled children start school and more than half of them drop out in 1-3 years. Countryside is almost totally lacking educational and supporting services for severely disabled children and ignorance and discriminating attitudes cause enormous barriers to their wellbeing. Without the support of community, parents and authorities, the children dont have possibility to develop their skills physically, socially or educationally. The project enhances the rights of children with severe disabilities (such as CP, autistic or intellectual dispability) by training communities and their leaders on disability issues and the rights of persons with disabilities, by supporting community-based activity-centres for integarted education and inclusive education in local schools as well as home based care, in Kampot and Kratie provinces. The work of the project implementer Komar Pikar Foundation (KPF) has proved that by community based solutions even the severely disabled children and their families can have access to education and supporting services and the discrimination can be reduced. As result of the project the children with severe disabilities are accepted as part of their communities, they have possibility to learn and develop their skills and have better access to e.g. health services. The financial status of the families improves and discrimination is reduced.

F.A: TRADE UNION STRUCTURES AN...D COLLECTIVE BARGAINING IN PORTS
more
F.a: Trade Union Structures an...d Collective Bargaining in Ports
more
This project strengthens the a...ffiliation of workers in the transport sector into a trade union SNTT, improves union's capacity to negotiate better working conditions with employers, and build up the role of young workers inside the transport sector trade union. The major challenges for transport sector workers are the weak interest representation of workers, and the exploitation of outsourcing and labor hiring systems by the employers. As the result of these, working conditions do not fulfill minimum standards and violations to workers' rights are common. Lack of collective bargaining, zero-hour agreements, low wages, lack of social security, deficiencies in occupational health and safety measures, and discrimination based on age or ethnic background are common problems in this sector. Threats and persecution by employers aimed at organized workers makes trade union activities difficult. As the result of the project, the interest representation of dockers and other transport sector workers improves, and the transport sector trade union SNTT becomes stronger. The number of young trade union activists among SNTT members increases, there are more young people in SNTT's decision-making bodies, changes in union structures consolidate more space for young workers within the union, and the capacity of young trade union activists in collective bargaining improves. New collective bargaining agreements include clauses benefitting particularly young workers. SNTT as a union serves as an example to other Colombian sector unions. The beneficiaries of the project are young dockers and young workers in transport sector and the young trade union activists in SNTT. The project is implemented by International Transport Federation (ITF) and its Colombian member union SNTT. ITF and SNTT implemented with SASK's support a successful project to improve dockers' working conditions during the years 2015-2017.

Digital development technical ...support aims to 1. Provide digital development support, training, materials and a digital solutions portfolio both to Plan staff and the civil society actors in the focus countries, 2. Strengthen civil society and improve community engagement via digital technology, 3. Empower girls as the digital storytellers of their own lives, 4. Expand the Digital Development Solutions Portfolio of tested and proven technologies that can be replicated and scaled up within the five key focus countries and beyond, 5. Continue to co-fund the position of Global Coordinator for Digital Development (based in Finland, co-funded by various other Plan offices) and recruit a Regional Digital Development Advisor for Eastern and Southern Africa. Within our programme focus of sexual and reproductive health and rights, there is room for exploring and testing the potential of various technologies and digital tools that could enhance programme delivery and reach, improve our monitoring and evaluation processes, increase participation and ultimately lead to better results. In the context of this MFA programme, technology can be particularly useful for improving access to information about SRHR, GBV and child marriage, which has been noted as a major challenge in all of our programme countries. The expected results are 1. The capacity of Plan staff and the civil society actors to utilize digital tools for monitoring and evaluation as well project implementation is significantly improved. 2. Girls skills and active participation into the use of digital tools to improve their lives is strengthened. 3. Digital Development Solutions Portfolio is made available in the five focus countries. 4. Globa Digital Development Coordinator position is secured and funded during 2018-2021. The beneficiaries are the Plan staff, project partners and communities which are part of the Plan International Finlands MFA funded SRHR programme 2018-2021. F.A: SMARTUP INNOVATION
F.a: Smartup Innovation
The innovation approach includ...es the following components: 1- Bi-annual Smartup Innovation Challenges focusing on SRHR, GBV, FGM and childmarriage will be available for up to 15 program countries. Best new concepts will be adopted by the main projects and thus further develop our models and approaches on the aforementioned topics, 2- Supporting agile and responsive programming methods serving especially the countries we work in (Uganda, Ethiopia, Laos and Mozambique). This will include for example training staff on Human Centered Design thinking, 3- Expansion of the Smartup Factory Youth Innovation project in Uganda and Ethiopia. The youth led innovation project started in 2015 will work in close collaboration with the projects in the countries, adopt SHRH component to its model and include specific support for girls, 4- Innovation Learning Program for Plan, partners and civil society at large. This will be an annual learning program linked to existing innovation related conferences such as Slush and InnoFrugal, 5- Support to the Plan Global Innovation Strategy. The founding idea is that development actors such as Plan can improve and positively disrupt the way international development projects are designed, funded and implemented by bringing agility, innovation, flexible funding and prototyping to enhance the traditional program design and management methods. Furthermore, Plan has wanted to enhance the capacity of communities, partners and the civil society at large by engaging them to co-innovating and co-designing services, approaches and processes that effectively address their rights. The immediate results expected include new solutions to development challenges, better approaches, increased agility in developing and implementing projects. The beneficiaries include the partners, various project beneficiaries in Uganda, Ethiopia, Laos and Mozambique, and Plan International. The innovation partner is Butterfly works which will help us to utilize human centered design thinking in our SRHR projects and train local staff and partners in our program countries.

The project will improve plant...ation workers capacities to advocate and promote their rights. It also supports the Haitian migrant workers in Dominican Republic, where local worker's associations are trained in regulations and migratory issues in banana plantations. CLAC's Workers' Network represents workers of Fairtrade certified banana, flowers, wine grapes and fruit plantations in Latin America and the Caribbean. This recently established Network's mission is to empower plantation workers and improve their capacities and coordination in order to improve their participation in the decision-making processes. In many cases the workers and their employers are unaware of work, health and safety regulations in force in their countries. This lack of awareness makes it difficult to comply with national labour standards. The target countries of the project are Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Brazil and Agentina. Besides the regional activities, the project has a special component for Dominican Republic. Although the country has maintained a sustained GDP growth for several decades, it has not resulted in improvements of equity and equality. Bananas are the biggest agricultural export of the country and over 300.000 families' livelihood is dependent on bananas. Fairtrade has commissioned a research which shows a large gap between actual remuneration and the living wage in the Dominican Republic. The banana sector in Dominican Republic is highly dependent on mainly undocumented migration workforce from Haiti. Compliance with labour standards has proven to be challenging for banana plantations and the Haitian workers' legal status and their access thereof to social security services is unclear and threatened. The goal of the project is to contribute to improved household income, assets & standard of living of the workers. The purpose is strengthened Workers' Network. Target countries are Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil and Dominican Republic. Direct beneficiaries are 90 representatives of the Workers' Network and approximately 450 workers participating in activities in the target countries. Final beneficiaries are the 28 000 workers in the Fairtrade plantations. The project is implemented in cooperation with CLAC and its Workers' Network. http://clac-comerciojusto.org/

more
ODF2030 ?Sustainable sanitatio...n for Ho Municipality Ghana ? project empowers and capacitates public authorities and institutions and mobilises the citizens for the achievement of total sanitation in line with Ho local development strategies and UN SDG's (especially SDG 6). Current level of access to improved sanitation in Ho is less than 20 per cent and open defecation is prevalent which is causing severe threat on people's health and environment. ODF2030 will ensure that public authorities can effectively implement ECOSAN campaigns in urban and rural areas. The ECOSAN solutions not only improve hygiene and health but also create opportunities for improved food security and poverty reduction through organic fertiliser use improves state of environment and diminish greenhouse gas emissions. Project includes activities within all Finland's 4 priority areas as well as improve gender and equality since women and girls are the main target groups. The capacity building is a continuous process that includes eg. baseline studies training courses regional stakeholder dialogue pilots peer learning and evaluations. As a result of ECOSAN campaigns we expect to see increased private investments to sanitation 14 new rural communities with Open Defecation Free (ODF) status as well as 16 communities and 2 peri-urban housing areas mobilized for production and use of organic fertilisers. Main outputs of ODF2013 include train-the-trainers courses annual stakeholder forums and public awareness events technology and service pilots and a feasibility study for ECOSAN business model. ODF2030 benefits directly the Ho Municipal Assembly and Ho Technical University and supports teaming up with institutions like the CWS Agency of Volta for reaching total sanitation. Other direct beneficiaries include the communities involved in ECOSAN campaigns. The partners in Ho are committed to the promotion of ECOSAN solutions following the local government cooperation with the City of Lahti that has involved several pilots for schools and rural households. To ensure availability of diverse expertise needed GDTF LAMK and JAMK opted to join forces in implementing the project.

The project will focus on Indi...genous Community Socio Cultural Rights and Forest-based Sustainable Livelihood. Through this the main focus will be given on the follow-up of implementation of CFR (Community Forest Rights/Resources) under FRA (Forest Rights Act) till all the villages have got their community rights over Community Forest Resources, including rights over the shifting cultivation area where Adivasis are practicing since long time. They will also ensure that their individual forest rights land as well as community boundary is properly identified and accepted by the community. Along with this, project will focus on the establishment of good relationship among the different Adivasi communities of other area in the district, state and other state and mutual learning of good traditional practices for their better life and livelihood. They will also ensure the sustainable practice of livelihood and its documentation. Time to time they will raise their current issues with other people in their Adivasi forums and other different platforms, including submitting memorandum to Government Of Odisha and Government Of India and meeting with Government People.Seba Jagat has worked in the themes of adivasi forest and land rights, culture, village self-governance, adivasi women groups, promotion of sustainable minor forest produce utilisation and organic agriculture, and proper implementation of government social and employment support programmes. Devote Trust is founded by local adivasis in the beginning of 2000's. Its basis of operations are the needs of local forest dependent communities, and it is working for realisation of a just, sustainable and democratic society. In its operational villages live Kondh adivasis, whose main source of livelihoods are agriculture, shifting cultivation and minor forest products. Most of the people are living below poverty lines and indebtedness is a big problem in their areas. Hard labour and malnutrition makes the people vulnerable to diseases like malaria, diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.

The focus of the project is to... support the registration of Community rights for forests based on the Forest Rights Act, 2006 (FRA) and to support the creation of communities' forest and other resource management systems. As part of this, the capacity of local actors (including legislative capacity) to respond to violations of resource rights is supported, resource inventories strengthened (forming he basis for the registrations), examples of successful implementation of the Law raised, and civil society cooperation in the field of community rights strengthened. In addition, the project extends support to mapping and documenting of the work of traditional healers (Gunis), and strengthening the cooperation and skill sharing among them, and between them and with relevant government offices in the field of health care. The project aims at formalising their work within the framework of existing officially recognised standards, create awareness about their special skills through various channels and to improve access to healthcare services in general through the services provided by the Gunis. The project provides trainings, exchange visits related to forest rights work and traditional healing, organises regional workshops on forest rights and traditional healing, and supports the associating of the Gunis for the development of their skills, quality assurance and the availability of services. Within the framework of forest rights work, the project focuses specifically on 50 villages, 30 of which are located in southern Rajasthan, 10 in Madhya Pradesh and 10 in Gujarat. There are about 40000 inhabitants in the project areas. The project will train 80 people for supporting of the implementation of the FRA, seeking to produce 40 new community forest rights applications, training for 40 Gunis and supporting their state level associating initiatives. In addition, five Biocultural Community Protocols will be drawn up. The project aims at reach about 5000 people and to get at least 800 hectares of adivasi lands formally registered through the implementation of FRA.

F.A: ENHANCING WOMEN'S PARTICI...PATION IN COUNTY GOVERNANCE IN KENYA

F.a: Enhancing Women's partici...pation in County Governance in Kenya
more
Social economic rights in Keny...a are enshrined in the 2010 Constitution. These are not realised. The progressive realisation of these rights has been very slow. This has been even slower for rights that impact women the most for example health rights, access to water, right to education etc. The aim of this project is to empower women at grassroots level to claim their rights, participate in budgeting and governance of county funding and access constitutional allocated funds for women. This will be done through a series of activities dependent on the region of the country. Some counties have women who are already in a small way engaging in this process. While in other counties, more engagement will be required to build their capacity and confidence to actively demand for services and access their rights. www.informaction.tv

F.A: ENHANCING ACCESS TO JUSTI...CE FOR SEXUAL & GENDER MINORITIES IN KENYA
more
F.a: Enhancing Access to Justi...ce for Sexual & Gender Minorities in Kenya
more
The project will promote the r...ealization of human rights by enhancing access to justice for LGBTIQ individuals living in Kenya who often face higher rates of violations of their human rights as envisaged in the 2010 Constitution of Kenya and other international treaties. The free legal aid clinic, recently expanded to include legal aid community outreaches, functions to ensure that LGBTIQ persons, who are often unable to obtain redress for violations that they face or resolve legal matters, are able to access justice without fear of discrimination or recrimination from stakeholders such as police officers. It also addresses the lack of economic agency of majority of the LGBTIQ community to access legal services. The strategic litigation component of our work is critical as it seeks to assert that the constitution affirms the human rights of sexual and gender minorities, including but not limited to, the right to life, freedom from cruel and degrading treatment, freedom from torture, freedom from discrimination, the right to equality and dignity, the right to privacy, freedom of association, the freedom of expression as well as socioeconomic rights. These programs individually and cumulatively contribute to the promotion and protection of the human rights of sexual and gender minorities in Kenya. www.nglhrc.com

Improving Farmers' livelihoods... and Food Security in I-K Region through promoting energy-efficient solar fruit dryers
more
Improving Farmer's Livelihoods... and Food Security in Issyk-Kul Region through promoting energy-efficient solar fruit dryers projects main goals are to 1) establish a training mechanism on fruit drying technologies and construction of solar fruit dryers and 2) to improve income opportunities for women farmers by using eco-friendly solar fruit dryers.70 % of the residents of Issyk-Kul live in villages in rural areas. Agriculture is the main source of income for most low- and middle-income villagers and they experience challenges in acquiring healthy food options during the winter period. One of the solutions for winter food supply is to dry fruits. Drying fruits also provides solutions for storage sales and it enables the farmers to increase the quality of their product. In addition large capital investments are not required for acquiring solar fruit dryers. The project is managed by Public Fund AVEP and implemented in cooperation with professional association AMETIS (assisting mainly in the construction of the dryers) and training center Bilim. AVEP and Bilim were partners in the KARAGAT+ project which contributed to economical and sustainable development in the Issyk-Kul area. The first pilot solar dryer was developed as a part of KARAGAT+.AVEP AMETIS and Bilim will jointly develop the training mechanism. Within the project 20 Farmer Groups (FG) consisting of circa 300 women (60 % under the age of 35). FGs will receive training for the use of the solar dryers as well as in business practices and budgeting. Promotion of the project will be done through information seminars and cooperation with the local municipalities. The solar dryers will be constructed in cooperation with AMETIS. A single dryer has the minimum productive capacity of 1000kg of dried fruits per season. Each FG receives a solar dryer for further use after the project. The FGs will receive backstopping support and coaching throughout the project. Interventions may be used to ensure the realization of gender-equality objectives. The project starts with a baseline evaluation survey. Results concerning the effectivity of training modules and for each stakeholder group will be monitored separately. An independent consultant will conduct the mid-term and final evaluations. The project will be carried out in 20182019. Kumtor Gold Company is the second financer of the project.AVEP web page: www.avep.info

The purpose of the Laos Countr...y Programme is to contribute to holistically healthier youth in Savannakhet City through the better fulfilment of childrens rights. This can be achieved through increasing capacity of young people in making healthy choices in their lives and by empowering youth, volunteers, parents and teachers to become active members in their society to act as strong societal advocates, especially for those who are vulnerable and in risk of social exclusion. The improved equity of the girls and other vulnerable groups is emphasized. The aimed impact of the Programme is increased justice, strengthened human dignity, and peace in Laos.#The target area is located in Savannakhet city. The Programme works in close cooperation with four high schools and runs one youth centre, directly targeting young people, parents, volunteers, teachers and officials to ensure the wellbeing of young people. Also, awareness raising events like campaigns are organized in the district. The estimated number of community members benefiting directly from the Programme activities is 17 000 and the number of community members estimated to benefit indirectly is 51 000. The most vulnerable groups, such as young people with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and victims of human trafficking, are reached in collaboration with other stakeholders. The Programme is implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Sports of Lao PDR. However, the operations are carried out by the Fida team including local staff, trained volunteers, committees and expatriates. If possible, a local NGO will be established to continue the work of the Programme in the future. Since 2013, Fida International has had a Youth Resource Centre in Savannakhet to encourage the youth, offer them opportunities to develop their skills, and help them to adapt healthier lifestyles. Wellbeing of the members of the Centre has improved during the Projects time. Young people have learnt new skills, become more confident and active, because they have had meaningful activities, such as sports, music, arts, campaigns, trainings and voluntary activities to help society.

F.A: ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM
F.a: Adult Education Program
Widespread violence forced ove...r 170000 people from Ivory Coast to flee the Eastern boerder-areas of Liberia. By the beginning of 2018, most of the refugees had returned and the majority of the remaining 10800 refugees are not expected to return but possibly stay permanently within the border area communities. The level of education for refugees and local people in the region is low and illiteracy in the area is even lower than the country average 52%. The aim of the project is to contribute towards the fulfilment of right to education and to enhance the resilience of participants and communities. The project provides adult education for both refugees and local residents in Bahn camp and in the refugee hosting communities in Nimba as well as in Liberian communities in Bong. As a result of the training, knowledge and participation will improve and social cohesion of the communities will be strengthened. As the project increases the literacy of the population, it creates a forum for discussion on community development issues and encourage self-initiated development contributing to improved well-being. The project has human rights based approach enabling participation of refugees and community membes to planning and implementation of the activities. Majority of the participants will be women whose participation in decision making and development activities will increase due to improved self-esteem and communication skills. Existing inequalities are reduced by offering equal learning opportunies also to other marginalised groups. With literacy and other skills gained during the project participants capacity to adopt to changing climate will increase. The project beneficiaries are adult learners (Ivorian refugees and Liberians), trained community based facilitators, community literacy management committee members and their family members. The implementing partner is National Adult Education Association of Liberia whose work and networks for the development of national adult education sector will also be strengtened.

All five Malawian IndustriALL ...affiliate unions have since mid-2014 worked together with our support to strengthen their basic work in metal, mining, textile, chemical and energy production industries. During this time the membership numbers of the unions have grown by almost 9 000 people, of whom in actual industry sectors about one third. There is further estimated potential of 100 000, hence there is plenty of space for growth. The unions have managed to obtain five new company level CBAs, bringing the total to the current 25. Malawian unions have started from the very basics: growth in union density and negotiation power, as well as various kinds of training and education related to basic rights, organizing, negotiation work and occupational health and safety. The needs are enormous in this country that belongs to the category of the poorest countries in the world, where widespread unemployment easily leads to dumping of working conditions, unless unions are adequately capable for action. In the coming years, the Malawian unions aim at increasing their membership by 25 % per year, paying special attention to female and young workers. The expected increase in the number of CBAs is 20 % per year, and in their contents attention is paid especially to the very poor level of health and safety, as well as women specific issues at workplaces. Check-off system for membership fee coverage will get more widely used. All this requires training and campaigning, and production and dissemination of information materials for example on OHS. In the long run, the unions also aim at influencing their country's industrial policies and labour legislation and its implementation especially in dispute resolution.

Due to intensive drought most ...of Lungwena area farmers harvested in 2015-16 farming calendar less than a single bag of maize and most of community activities were affected. A key focus of this continuation phase (2018-19) is to strengthen irrigation farming integrated into the previous project in Feb 2016 because of this significant change in project environment. Irrigation is important part of solutions for food shortage in project area as 11 out of 12 villages are along lake Malawi. Pemphero board members estimated that some more time and support are needed to make these new steps sustainable in practice as current 3-year project ends already in 2017. Intensive monitoring and support is needed for farmers involved in newly established irrigation farming. However continuation serves also other aspects of the project: establishing sustainable farming methods and obtaining changes in nutritional quality of local diet can be well-absorbed only during a longer period. In strengthening of Pemphero's organisation a new element is integrated in this continuation project i.e. searching for Pemphero such income generating activities which could be preferably link to alternative energy sources as very much needed in the region. At the end of the continuation project more farmers are doing irrigation farming along the lake using ecological sound methods farmers are harvesting two or three times a year farmers are planting multiple crops animal farming is adopted by some and people?s diet improved. Income generating activities and capacity of Pemphero has been improved. Main beneficiary groups are same as previously: Persons who will participate in the collective irrigation farming (ca. 300) villagers who benefit from the collective farming products (ca. 3000) Pemphero as an organisation and its activists who get their capacity strengthened (ca. 200). Outcome and key outputs will be achieved by training villagers and Pemphero activists; purchasing agricultural tools and office equipment to Pemphero but to be used in all villages strengthening Pemphero?s capacity to work in the project villages support its networking with other CSOs and local authorities.
