The project has been planned a...s a 5-year project. This timeframe was considered necessary in order to impact the development problem in a meaningful way. The first project phase (ongoing) is from 2017-2019. The continuation project (second phase) is for the period 2020-2021. The DEVELOPMENT PROBLEM that the project addresses is food insecurity and malnutrition in target communities in Rajshahi Division Bangladesh. The project focuses in particular on strengthening the food security of vulnerable groups such as women children and People with Disabilities(PwDs) and socio-economic participation of women. The OUTCOMES that the project will achieve are:1. Women in target communities have strong social networks and ownership and use of productive assets2. Vulnerable households in target communities possess and use their own food sources and income-generating skills and plan ahead for difficult times through e.g. saving money/non-perishable food.3. Household members in target communities have good nutrition knowledge and prepare food accordingly. The nutritional status of the most vulnerable community members is improved. These outcomes will be achieved through the following outputs:1.1 Women?s Community Based Savings Groups (CBSGs) are trained and plan their own income generating activities1.2 Women?s CBSG-based cooperatives are established and their capacity is strengthened2.1 Agricultural training and support is provided to CBSG members and their households2.2 Vocational and microbusiness training and start-up support provided to vulnerable unemployed community members3.1 Individual support and inclusion plans made for Children with Disabilities (CwDs) and awareness raising carried out on value and rights of CwDs3.2 Nutrition peer mentors trained and interventions undertaken to strengthen nutritional status of malnourished children. The achievement of these objectives will positively impact target communities and the problem of food insecurity through strengthening the nutrition knowledge of vulnerable local people and providing them with the means to secure food and adequate income for themselves and their families at all times of the year.

Project contributes to the hol...istic development of girls and boys under 8 years in safe and stimulating environments and strengthens the capacities of parents in supporting the development of their children. Foundations for a balanced growth and development of a child are laid in the early years of life, even pre-natal. Early childhood care and development (ECCD) and its importance for a child's later development are not well known in Bolivia. The project supports the development of holistic, cross-sectoral ECCD services in 14 municipalities across Bolivia together with health-, education- and child protection authorities. Capacity-building is offered to parents on good parenting practices from a holistic perspective with a special focus on involvement of fathers in the care and development of their children. Educators and teachers are supported in providing quality, gender equal and stimulating care and education. In addition, work on advocacy is carried out in order to influence legislation and budgets related to ECCD. Target group of the project is 15000 children and 9000 parents as well as a number of different authorities. The project is implemented in co-operation with the participating municipalities.

F.a: Monitoring public policie...s regarding collective territories in Baixo Amazonas
more
|
The project focuses on more sy...stematic advocacy in order for the demands of the social movements of Baixo Amazonas to be materialised. The social movement consists of organizations representing the inhabitants of extractive reserves in the area, which demand public policies to guarantee the conservation of the forests and the improvement of the quality of life of people living in them. First, the priority demands of the reserves are systematized, after which relevant municipal, state and federal authorities are targeted with advocacy work. These include the ministries of environment, agriculture, health and education. The challenge of the advocacy work so far has been the lack of access to the federal level actors due to resource constraints. In the end, the decisions are made on federal level, whereas the state level authorities lack decision-making power as well as resources. ELO was founded in 1993 as an NGO providing technical assistance to the social movements in Baixo Amazonas. It supports movements aiming at protecting the forests and improving the quality of life of people living in them, in for instance strategic planning, project implementation, financial management and communications. These social movements include indigenous peoples and gatherers. ELO currently coordinates a network of social movements in Baixo Amazonas. The network consists of rural workers' trade unions and associations of gatherer reserve inhabitants. It has drafted the Positive Demands Agenda aimed at the national, state and local level governments.

The project aims at improving ...food security in communities in the rural areas, protecting water sources and raising environmental awareness and sustainable development in communities. Food security is improved by establishing vegetable gardens and training community members to manage and maintain them. Also technical support is given. Food availability and nutritional balance are improved also by raising small livestock. Community members are trained in sustainable development, reforestation and environmental protection, including side effects of mine industry. Natural water sources are protected with fences and tree planting. Advocacy to authorities is done in order to raise their awareness and change attitudes e.g. in order to minimize the side effects of mine industry. The project is implemented in Sogamoso and Toquilla areas. The implementing partner is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colombia IELCO.

|
Based on the Felm values and p...rincipals our development cooperation work is built on advancing human rights and addressing the root causes of marginalization and injustice. Poverty is a human rights violation. Poverty elimination demands actions both from the rights holders i.e. the citizens and the duty bearers i.e. the authorities and the political decision makers. Discrimination and injustice are also moral challenges. Felm furthers these through value choices and by defending justice and non-discrimination.The Felm development cooperation program 2018-2021 promotes the rights of people who face discrimination advances social and economic justice and builds peace and reconciliation. Through the program we aim to remove discriminatory structures attitudes and harmful practices especially for women and girls for people living with disabilities for ethnic minorities and indigenous people and for youth. The program boosts empowerment livelihood and education food security and equal opportunities for the discrimintaed in communities and societies. Furthermore Felm promotes climate change prevention adaptation and resilience as well as builds capacity in disaster preparedness. The program addresses intersectional discrimination. In line with the rights based approach the capacity performance and networking of duty bearers and other influential actors to promote justice in societies is strengthened. We support development through prevention of conflicts and promoting peace and reconciliation in the communities. The implementation strategies of the program are project work disaster work technical support/experts advocacy communication global education and capacity building. We strengthen local civil societies through empowering the marginalized to become active citizens through supporting the role of the duty bearers and through developing the competencies and advocacy activities of actors of civil society including our partner organizations. The cross-cutting themes mainstreamed in all our work are gender equality inclusion of people with disabilities environmental protection and climate change and conflict sensitivity.

more
|
The extension of Social Protec...tion Floors to cover all girls boys women and men is one of the most effective ways to eradicate extreme poverty to reduce social and gender inequalities and to guarantee the realization of the human right to adequate livelihoods for all. This EU/SPS-Programme - co-financed by the EU-Commission (DEVCO/B3) MFA-Finland and OECD Development Centre - supports the efforts of developing countries to build up their national systems of social protection and essential services and to make them socially economically and politically sustainable. The national capacities of developing countries to analyse their existing social protection systems and prioritized reform needs will be strengthened. Good practices will be documented to guide future programming of Europan Commission's and Member States' ODA in support of the extension of social protection for all. The European Commission has delegated the implementation of the programme to a consortium consisting of the OECD Development Centre and the Gvoernment of Finland. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Finland has delegated the Finnish functions of the programme within the Government of Finland structures to THL the National Institute of Health and Welfare. Yet in the Programme Steering Committee Finland will be represented by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Clean water appropriate sanita...tion and hygiene (WASH) are fundamental to all life and human right. Unfortunately and especially with the Sanitation Millenium Development Goal not being achieved there are still 2.4 billion people without proper toilets. According to the new Sustainable Development Goal number 6 by 2030 every country should achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all and have sustainable use of the resources. Water and sanitation goals are also linked to other goals like food security (goal 2) health and wellbeing (goal 3) education (goal 4) gender equality (goal 5) energy (goal 7) and sustainable cities and communities (goal 11).The aim of the project is to educate and influence people's attitudes towards WASH. Its aim is to raise the status of WASH in society as part of the solutions for global environmental and social problems. In the project material concerning SDG 6 will be produced and training and discussion sessions will be arranged to the NGO's and to the private sector. Special attention will be given to accessible sanitation and making sanitation available to vulnerable groups. Information and advocacy work will be also be included by arranging events and seminars. The two-year project has been granted 43 315 euro government support.

This project ?Securing an enab...ling environment? will support human rights defenders in their vital work to promote human rights good government and the rule of law and will leverage the international and regional human rights systems to provide protection and prevent regression in the operating environment at the national level. The project will ensure that human rights defenders are better networked and capacitated in their strategic use of international and regional human rights systems and mechanisms. It will also ensure that international and regional mechanisms develop standards and make recommendations which respond to the situation operating environment and protection needs of defenders and become more accessible effective and protective in pushing for change on the ground. Further an increased number of jurisdictions will enact and effectively implement specific national laws and mechanisms to recognise and protect human rights defenders in line with the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders (which ISHR had a key role in bringing about) and the recently launched landmark Model National Law on Human Rights Defenders endorsed by 27 eminent human rights experts). Defenders of LGBTI rights women?s and ESC rights are priorities of and for this project with e.g. ISHR planning organising and convening with partners a much-needed ?General Comment to the Yogyakarta Principles? on this key document?s 10th anniversary (2017) co-steering the first and only space for defenders and multinational corporations to regularly come together to meet and to push for constructive human rights defender-related changes with their corporate social responsibility policies in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and training a new generation of defenders in multiple languages working on these thematic issues to use the international and regional human rights systems and mechanisms.

The UN Office of Information a...nd Communications Technology OICT has decided to establish a UN Technology and Innovation Laboratory (UNTIL) in Finland. A Letter of Intent has been signed between the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and UN OICT in July 2017. The UNTIL is part of an international technology laboratory network designed to bring together UN personnel researchers educational institutions and businesses to promote the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and other UN mandates through emerging technology. The chosen thematic priorities of UNTIL Finland are education health circular economy peace and security. Other labs will be established to Malaysia and further at least to Egypt and India. UNTIL is situated in the heart of Aalto University?s campus in Otaniemi Espoo where there are possibilities creating a whole UN campus subsequently. The reported UNTIL funding has been targeted and limited to ODA eligible activities, which include developing digital technology to support the SDGs in developing countries. The laboratories operate as research and testing platforms for digital solutions that can be introduced in the developing countries via UN.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME
|
Family Strengthening Programme
|
The programme's long-term deve...lopment goal is the realisation of child rights. The overall objective of the programme is to enable the most vulnerable children who are orphans or at the risk of loosing parental care to grow and develop within a caring family environment and have their rights respected. These objectives are reached by working with the targeted children families and communities to empower them to effectively protect and care for their children in cooperation with local authorities and service providers. Focusing on vulnerable children reduces inequality. Nutrition health education and employment play a key role. The objectives are attained by programme specific activities. The chosen activities will depend on the needs identified in the family development plan (FDP) of each participating family. There are three types of activities: 1) Direct essential services to support the child's right to survival protection development and participation. 2) Capacity building of caregivers and the community by training and sensitization so that they are capable and able to protect and care for their children. 3) Advocacy actions aim to improve the overall framework conditions for the children of our target group. At full potential the programme will reach an estimated 1000 children and 310 caregivers of whom an estimated 70% are single women.

F.A: DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL PROD...UCER ORGANIZATIONS IN GUATEMALA
more
|
F.a: Development of small prod...ucer organizations in Guatemala
more
|
Coffee is Guatemala's main exp...ort product before bananas and sugar. Climate change threatens the coffee production in Central America as the temperature rise and rainfall fluctuation endanger the whole industry in many areas. In addition the rust disease has seriously hit the whole region cutting around a quarter of the harvest. Damages caused by the rust disease have also reduced the employment of seasonal workers.During the project's planning phase in 2014, the coffee producers identified as their major problems - in addition to climate change and the rust disease - cooperatives' weak governance, low productivity, lack of quality control, shortage of working capital and difficulties in market access. The goal of the Guatemalan project is to improve livelihood of small-scale coffee producers. The project's purpose is to develop the country's coffee producer organizations to be more efficient and productive. The project develops producer organizations' governance by developing strategic plans for producer organizations and supporting production of gender equality policies and deployment of those. Productivity of coffee will be improved by making farm management plans, increasing organic fertilizers' production, by setting up nurseries to replace coffee plants and by establishing demonstration plots with special focus on adaptation to climate change. Quality of coffee will be improved by training technicians on repair and maintenance of processing machines. In addition, the project will develop funding opportunities and facilitate market access by training on market knowledge. The project includes all 15 Fairtrade coffee producer cooperatives of Guatemala. These cooperatives are responsible for around 3,4 percent of Guatemalan coffee production and their export volumes are between 5 and 50 containers per year. The direct beneficiaries of the project are around 15.000 coffee producers, of which 17 percent are women. The project implementation began in late 2014.Implementing partner organizations are Latin American and the Caribbean network of small Fairtrade producers, CLAC, and it's Guatemalan Network (Coordinadora Guatemalteca de Comercio Justo, CGCJ).http://clac-comerciojusto.org/http://www.cgcj.org.gt/

IMPROVING FOOD SECURITY THROUG...H SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES AND STRENGTHENING LOCAL BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT

Improving food security throug...h sustainable agricultural practices and strengthening local biodiversity management
more
|
Market-driven agriculture has ...caused a huge set back in production of traditional grains which are good sources of nutrients necessary for human health. At the same time rapid use of chemical fertilizers has degraded the important soil constituents. This development has had a very negative impact on food security of small farmers. The project aims to improve food security and livelihood of small farmers in ten villages in southern Rajasthan by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and cultivation of minor millets vegetables and fruits that have been traditionally cultivated in the area and have high nutritional value. Participatory Awareness Generation Camps will be organized to raise awareness of uses and importance of traditional crops and conservation of biodiversity. Green house nurseries and nutrition gardens will be established in villages and local communities will be encouraged to participate in documenting and conserving important bio-resources by establishing two seed banks in each project village and by facilitating the formation of Biodiversity Management Committees. These will be linked with local government strengthening the role of communities in bio-resource management. Women's participation in decision making and livelihood activities will be promoted by facilitating the formation of self-help groups and encouraging women to join a Biodiversity Management Committee. The project implemented by Prayatna Samiti and supported by the Swallows supports development objectives by increasing food security and promoting sustainable use of natural resources local democracy and participation of women in decision making. The project will strengthen local organization's capacity in community capacity building and establishing linkages between communities and local government. The project is expected to benefit 1650 people. They all belong to tribal communities and depend on small farming and animal husbandry.

Eastlands is one of a Nairobi ...slums. Human rights abuses and lack of awareness of the rights and the law is common in the slum. Poorly implemented are, for example, the right to housing, to sanitation, to water, to health and to education. Just as bad is also implemented in the access to justice: The legal processes are slow and too expensive for the residents , the authorities are corrupt , little educated and ignorant of the contents of the law and the police is guilty of numerous human rights violations. The main objective of the project is to increase Eastlands slum-dwellers's awareness of their rights and their access to justice, as well as to support human rights defenders's grassroots work.Beneficiaries of the project are th residents of 14 slums. In addition, the project builds capacity of Kaplet's members on legal assistance, as well as on more efficient organizational work, eg . their information technology skills will be improved . Kaplet was founded by six legal advisers in Kamukunji in Nairobi in 2009 and the organization was registered in the same year . http://www.kaplet.org/

|
Equally Engaged II (EqE II)
|
The development goal of the pr...oject is the equal treatment and access of Roma youth to the labour market by strengthening the capacities of grassroots civil society organisations (CSO) and Roma Ashakali and Egyptian (RAE) communities. The principal outcomes of the project are 1) Expanded space for Roma Civil Society in Kosovo 2) Stabillisation of Roma and non-Roma communities and 3) Increased economic empowerment of Roma youth. The central activities include boosting the capacities of Roma CSOs training Roma and non-Roma youth in conflict resolution skills to overcome conflict and discrimination and increasing the capacity of Roma youth on education and employment opportunities. The project contributes particularly to the growth of developing countries? economies to generate more jobs livelihoods and wellbeing as it works towards better access for poorest and most vulnerable Roma youth to decent work income skills development and opportunities for a livelihood for themselves and their families.Alarming share of Roma youth notably girls has been left out from secondary level education and employment in Kosovo and thus they have remained vulnerable. The project aims both to reduce inequality and to promote gender equality. Project respects climate sustainability too.The project will be carried out by the Helsinki Deaconess Institute the main organization working with Roma migrants in Finland and the Voices of Roma Ashkali and Egyptians (VoRAE) who has a general mandate to improve the lives of Roma communities in Kosovo. The principal beneficiaries are vulnerable groups of Roma youth between the ages of 15-22 years old with special reference to Roma girls.

AJEEC-NISPED (Arab Jewish Cent...er for Equality Empowerment and Cooperation-Negev Institute for Strategies of Peace and Development) implements programs that promote social change Arab-Jewish cooperation equality and understanding while simultaneously advancing unmet educational economic environmental and health related needs of Israel?s Arab citizens. It has also an active Middle East program focused on building partnerships in Palestine and in other countries of the region. The broad goal of this project is to create a healthier relationship between Israelis and Palestinians in the area of e-waste disposal and processing yielding better environmental health and economic outcomes for all affected populations. It aims to foster an economically viable and ecologically friendly model for the e-waste disposal industry in which burning is replaced by stripping and/or plastic recycling and Palestinian e-waste processors are empowered to create their own sustainable and profitable enterprises. The project hopes to turn enterprises currently used for environmentally damaging burning into enterprises used for sustainable recycling.

KNOW-HOW-YOU-DO! II
|
Know-How-You-Do! II
|
The project locates in Moldova... the poorest country in Europe where the political and economic crisis has led to the increase of poverty and disparity. The project contributes to the development problem of the vulnerability of the youth which is manifested in youth unemployment and inactive citizenship causing hopelessness and social problems like substance abuse and early sexual activity. Mentally youth is susceptible to a range of economic physical and psychological risks. The most vulnerable youth are those living in poor families in rural areas. The project?s principal outcomes are: 1) Strengthened capacity of the Civil society organizations to support the vulnerable youth 2) Strengthened capacities of the most vulnerable youth and 3) Strengthened networks with relevant stakeholders and partners. The central activities are: Developing Curricula and training materials; Training of community youth workers; Developing peer support system and volunteering; Organising public benefit campaigns in the communities; Developing network structure and capacities: networking with other actors in the same field; Organising an annual forum to share information and best practices. The project promotes civil society?s participation in poverty reduction and sustainable development by awareness raising and capacity building in youth work. As such ?Societies have become more democratic and better-functioning? is the priority area of Finland's development policy to which the project contributes. The project emphasizes the promotion of human rights gender equality and sustainable development. It empowers the most vulnerable youth to become active citizens and strengthens networks with relevant stakeholders in the field. The project will be carried out by the Helsinki Deaconess Institute the provider of the nationally recognised and benchmarked VAMOS Youth services and the Moldovan Christian Aid. The direct beneficiaries are the most vulnerable youth in ages of 14-18.

F.a: Working conditions of Moz...ambican food industry workers
more
|
The project supports interest ...representation of Mozambican food industry workers by intensifying workplace and local level capacity through training shop stewards and occupational health and safety representatives, as well as production of information materials. The primarily company level negotiation system of Mozambique requires plenty of capable local level experts, because only minimum wages are negotiated at national level. Occupational health and safety measures, youth activities and equality work will get special attention, and in these aspects also the expertise of the Finnish Food Workers' Union will be made use of. The group of Mozambican food industry workers of around 35 000 will probably grow in the next few years, there was growth in sight already before the economic difficulties that started in 2016, and investments are expected to return soon. Workers in the sector are primarily young, they have relatively low education level, and they are relatively easily replaceable with others in the circumstances of mass unemployment. For this reason, they are in a vulnerable position in the labour market without a strong organization representing their interests. As a result of the work, food industry workers have, through their union engaged in strong interest representation, knowledge about their rights, possibility to demand living wages and safe and healthy working environment. The work will benefit Mozambican food industry workers, and the project partner is the food industry union with the widest coverage in the country.

The programme aims to build op...portunities for 0-6 year old children to grow in a healthy and stimulating environment through an inclusive and integrated community based early childhood care and development intervention. The programme includes four key components that include strengthening parenting skills and knowledge to support child development; increasing access to quality early learning services for vulnerable children, facilitating effective transitions to primary school and advocacy at community, district and national level to meet the development needs of young children. Of the country's 0-6 year old children, only 4% has access to some form of ECCD and especially in the rural areas access to early learning is limited due to lack of awareness and poverty on the part of communities and parents, lack of supportive policy and commitment on the part of government, and also neglect on the part of donors to this very crucial sector. The programme targets the most vulnerable children including girls, orphans and children with disabilities. In total 8 000 children, 8 350 parents and 125 teachers will benefit from the programme. The programme is implemented by Plan Mozambique in cooperation with the communities and the government.
